Well... I certainly didn't expect a flashback at this point. But I guess it fits. We never did get a proper flashback for Luffy, considering the manga started with him as a kid, with Shanks, and then had a 'time-skip'.

But don't really know what else we can learn of them... of how they came to accept each other as brothers.

Don't know how I feel about this. Oda is always genius on how he plans things... but the thing I want the most right now is reuniting the crew.

I agree, a flashback at this point is cute but after an epic overodose of war and death it feels bland and weak

Lol, i really like how Oda makes all of these important characters ugly as hell.

At one point or another he'll make us feel bad for Dadan somehow.

it's instead of foreshadowing.
most writers first give a character a flashback before they kill him. Oda gives him one postmortem.

There are have been a few characters in One Piece of have supposedly been killed off just to make a return. Oda is great, but let's not think of him beyond having a character survive mortal peril.

He had a character stuck in a treasure box after all.

If I recall, the character stuck in a treasure box was either filler or only part of little buggy's cover-art mini story in the manga.
