I was with a group of friends while we watched this. I don't want to spoil it and most of you have probably already seen it, but we were all speechless and sort of screwed up after watching this. Screwed up in the way that you just don't know what to say about anything other than holy shit. I recommend this movie to all!

I would just blindly watch it (without looking it up) so you get the full value of having no idea what's going on unless the movie wants you to know.

If I can't get away with saying this is the best movie I have ever seen, I can at least say that it's DEFINITELY in my top three.

I've seen this movie. All I can say is, what else would you expect from Koreans?

Yeah, I felt slightly ill for a few days after watching this movie.

Having said that, I really want to see this movie again and find out if it's worth anything after the shock value has worn off.

Hmm, good point Xan. I'd like to see if this movie has anything substantial to offer beyond the shock value.

If I recall correctly, as I watched it the first time, the story and characters didn't do much for me up until the twist, after which I thought it was a worthwhile experience to have seen this movie. It might be an unfair assessment though, as I have a hard time digesting anything Korean, including their language, their culture, the look of their people, the food, etc.

Well, you should actually be blaming the Japanese for the story; its originally from a manga.

Most people don't know this is a trilogy of some sorts, with this being the second movie.
There are also Sympathy for mr vengeance (1st) and Sympathy for lady vengeance (3rd).

I thought old boy was better then both, but I really liked lady vengeance a lot as well, almost as much as old boy.

Looks good. It doesn't say for sure but I hope it's rated R or maybe even NC17 so it can keep all the gore and violence of the original.

I wonder if it will have the weird [spoiler] incestuous twist.

I'm hoping it does.

Apparently, it has the [spoiler]hammer and octopus scenes.

Spoilers, though this is from a 10 year old movie so it's probably ok:

Since they show the daughter in the news cast ("do you think you could forgive [your father]?") I think that means they remove the incest twist, probably on both sides. Of course that could be another girl posing as his daughter as a part of his tormentor's plan, but that would be convoluted even for the Korean version. So this is most likely a standard revenge action movie. Blah.

Actually, that's exactly what I figured.

The hypnosis was brilliant, but switching the hypnotizing story-line for the fake daughter thing seems viable. Though, hypnosis is way cooler, and Oldboy (Korean) is so much more than just an action/revenge movie.....

The trailer feels exactly like Taken, though. :( I hope the trailer was just doctored to look like that! Their imagery is definitely parallel to the movie, especially the hotel scenes.

Actually that makes a lot of sense, replacing the hypnosis with some other deception. The twist is really what makes Oldboy what it is, so I hope they keep that.
