This show is a sure keeper. I can say that after just this one episode. Actually after just the OP, which was exceedingly similar to Baccano's OP. Lots and lots of characters, of course, just like in Baccano, and not the slightest and bloodiest idea what all those very different people were all about. Crooks and otherwise shady individuals aplenty, surprise surprise. Seems very interesting after the first episode. Makes Tokyo look like a real jungle as well.

I have to watch this series a second time, eventually, after it's all finished to catch all the references and other stuff you see in the background. I'm sure there are more than the couple even a blind man would have noticed immediately.

gg's sub didn't seem to have any major problems this time, fortunately.

Oh goody, quantity over quality for the motherfucking win ...

What was that?

I like the backgrounds and universe a lot.
Chara design is acceptable if there's a great story behind it I won't mind.

Seems like there's a lot running in that very first ep. Like an overload of data to process...

I should really be wary of descriptions for shows as they tend to be so far from what the actual thing is... but in that case, I don't know what it is yet...

I will absolutely watch ep 2

dude if this is like Baccano then we shouldn't have any idea what's going on until like the 5th episode or something xD.

alright, guess i'm gonna download it then.

Im surprised GG released this since CrunchyRoll licensed the series.
I'll wait, with every other show, for the inevitable horriblesubs or whatever group. Anything is better than GG. Except Ayako. That one is worse.

^what about chihiro?

and it's pretty funny when you see someone say "I'll wait for cr rips", showing how there was a faster subbed version already available over the simulcasted one.

just watched it, and I really enjoyed this ep. definitely caught my interest, and I'm looking forward to the next episodes.

Awesome second episode. I was hoping it to be like this based on the first episode. I'm glad it didn't disappoint me. It was silly of me to think they are being lazy by recycling almost half of the episode, the roof sequence was nicely done, I for one was also looking forward at Ms. Magenta's when she realize she was played out. :D I didn't expect her to really jump though.

This is enough for me to be excited for the next episode.

It's rare for an anime to come out as intelligent without doing so in a pompous and annoying manner ( yeah i'm looking at you Evangelion >_> ) but i have to say that Durarara! has impressed me greatly with these 2 episodes alone

I wonder if the shy kid will eventually have the spotlight or if the show will change its focus each episode throughout the whole cast

Also the biker chick ( it's a girl right? ) and her shadow powers are quite intriguing and i'm looking forward to how those will be explained along with the ability to throw soda machines 15 feet up in the air

Alright, literally punching the dude out of his clothes was kinda ridiculous.. in fact, it was exactly what I didn't want to see, yet knew to expect, when I saw the trash can throwing or whatever it was in the PV.. That whole exaggerated violence aspect is a ton like baccano, and i wasn't really a fan of it in that :\.

the characters developing are still pretty interesting though. I'm looking forward to the gangs theme.. but, after looking at how they treated that first guy in this ep, I think that entire aspect in this is gonna be super lame.. I guess they can't glamorize gang membership too much.. which goes back to the whole issue of this just existing as some socially-positive reinforcement type anime (speaking of the anti-suicide theme in the previous episode). which would be such a waste...

also, i mean, horo and baccano in ep one was like "huh. lol".. but this is ridiculous. can anyone name them all? all i can name is

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9253/snapshot20100123233410.th.jpg (http://img714.imageshack.us/i/snapshot20100123233410.jpg/)

(from left to right) (figured out the ones i didn't know)
1 Baccano
2 Cencoroll
3 Baccano
4 Jigoku SHoujo
5 Baccano
6 Jigoku Shoujo

and then here

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7418/snapshot20100123233507.th.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/i/snapshot20100123233507.jpg/)

the character on that is the girl from Yozakura Quartet, so it's presumably a Yozakura Quartet manga there.

there was another instance in which the none-speaking female from Baccano was on a sign in the background, but I didn't feel the need to post a pic of that too.

so, um, like, people, this is still the best new series out there!

Frosti - Durarararara!!!!!! - Episode 000000000006 (http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=download&tid=115795)

so first off i wasn't too into this. no, wait, that's a lie. i was immediately sold on Izaya being a good guy, the kidnapped girl getting a love interest, and, well, topsy-turvy. I think someone said it a way's back, this show is intelligent without having to be all pompous. i'm also a sucker for telling a story out of order, and a lot of the episodes have been doing that.

i absolutely love the way people react to Simon, because it's exactly what happens when you see the dark skinner hawkers out in Shibuya or Shinjuku or anywhere.

Izaya is remarkable because he is just a pure bastard (the scene where he's stomping on the cell phone is priceless). Bartender is there for comic relief (so far), and I like that they kept some of the violence intact in this show, and Simon is the middle ground.

Selty. Well, hell. I strongly suggest that ANN description be removed (although it's a bit late now) because it's talking about things 6 episodes in... Needless to say, Selty is cool with me. I would like an explanation, eventually.

Kido, Kido, Kido. It's always the happy-go-lucky guy who has the most baggage and one of the harshest challenges to overcome. always.

i think the characters i like the least are the manga fiends. they're somewhat funny, but i don't find it terribly humorous the way they make all their little airheaded mistakes. That one guy is cool though.

The music works, and i'm so so so glad that all the unimportant people are greyed out. This one's going in the archive.

Oh, and I am waiting on Frosti versions as well.

I think this Frostii or nothing obsession is killing discussion on a rather discussable show. Where is all the Frostii or nothing grandstanding when an episode of lolimonogatari come out? Anyway, Episode 8 was quite interesting in the development area with some suspicions confirmed and new questions raised. Celty's head has been pretty definitively found, Shinra is even more shady than ever, Mikado got a bit of exposition which could help solve the mystery of why he's considered the main character despite being seemingly the least interesting cast member.

episode06

well, i'm still not very much into these four, and i was downright shocked to hear they could be involved with a group like the Dollars until it was explained that only the kickass guy was a member and the rest of them just back him up. some of the humor really clicked in this episode, and i'm even getting to like the three unlucky goons

but, most important has to be the appearance of Seiji's sister. not only is she completely in on this whole human experimentation thing, but her little brother's girlfriend got involved. and from that quick flash we saw of the head in a bottle, I've got a sinking feeling that isn't her head she's got on (she's also, notably, the only one of the characters in the OP who doesn't have a name, which firms my resolve that, whatever she is, she is not the girl Seiji thinks she is.). The real questions are about Seiji's sister, her company, and what connection they have with Selty (because you don't get a theme like "having no head" and retain it to one character, not in a show like this). My bet is on them trying to make more Dullahans.

Ho... That never visited my mind. I got an impression Seiji's sister is trying to save somebody (the one who's head is in the jar) and they are collecting people to experiment on the whatever treatment the head-in-a-jar could require. But I like your theory a lot more.

This is probably the best series this season, but due to people watching it in different paces, discussion is not flourishing, like Yuki said.

So for those who do watch until the latest subbed episode, do you guys think Celty's head has a different consciousness and personality than her body? The guy called the girl with her head attached "Celty", and she seemed to know who she was and what she wants to do. Does separating the head and the body of a Dullahan create two distinct personalities? If that is the case, and that weird guy really is Celty's head's original love interest, I wonder how things will go between Celty's body and Shinra.

Yukimura
Mon, 03-01-2010, 11:26 PM
That's an interesting idea. I have been assuming that silent neck scar girl didn't have much of a personality and Seiji fell in love with the idea of her and was projecting his romantic ideals onto her. It seemed/I would like to believe she was more along for the ride because he seemed nice enough and she didn't know any better. It could be that while her body desperately seeks to reunite with her head her head has somehow been 'tricked' into accepting her current body and is satisfied with her state and is moving on with life.

There is most likely some sort of link between the pharmaceutical place and Seiji beyond just the fact that his sister works there and the hints we've gotten so far seem to point to Silent Celty being a product of whatever program the pharmaceutical place is working on. I wouldn't be surprised if Seiji was at least partially aware of the circumstances surrounding Silent Celty's current state and trying to keep her for himself.

On an unrelated note, domestic Celty succeeded exceptionally in pushing my moé buttons with her reactions to Shinra eating her food. So cute.

shinta|hikari
Tue, 03-02-2010, 12:43 AM
Indeed, that scene was really great, especially with Celty's voice. I also liked how Shinra seemed to genuinely enjoy Celty's cooking. He was honest about how strange it tasted, and it seems he was also sincere when he told her he liked it. Maybe it is a combination of his weird thought process (falling in love with a headless girl) and his affection for her that overrides his actual taste sensation.

I assume that the body where Celty's head is attached no longer has any personality since it does not have a brain, so all of what we see should belong to Celty's head. I wonder if a Dullahan is originally not a single entity, but a pair composed of a head and a body with different identities.

I also think that Seiji is acting really suspicious, but I don't like him at all so he can be a complete villain and I won't care.

I find the behavior of glasses girl (what's her name again?) really strange. Why does she treat Mikado so coldly when all he has done so far is be nice to her and give her good advice? This is especially true when he went all the way to return her shoes. I know I would be pissed if that is all the thanks I get.

Yukimura
Tue, 03-02-2010, 04:37 PM
I am putting my money on a screwed up home life that she is ashamed of (in addition to her already bully filled school life) as the explanation for Anri's behavior. She seems to be devoid of hope past the point of being able to enjoy even small victories. It seemed like she gave up looking for her shoes because she just couldn't deal with trying anymore and getting them back didn't put a dent in her general malaise/despair.

I might also put a side bet on an extra long shot just for the lulz. Maybe she wanted Mikado to spend time with her so she tossed her own shoes. Then midway through looking for them with him she realized she hated herself for being such a shady character and went home dejected, hoping he would give up too (retarded I know, but this is for the lulz). Then when Mikado showed up at her house having found the shoes, likely having worked hard looking for her sake to do so, she felt even more dejected at what she had put him through thus inducing a cold response.

shinta|hikari
Tue, 03-02-2010, 07:31 PM
If it is just family circumstances, she could have at least said a word of thanks, and not act like she wants him to disappear the moment he hands her the shoes. I hope it is a more important and stranger reason, just so that I can get to like her character.

episode 07

didn't really love this episode, and that was disappointing, because Shizuo-chan is one of my favorite characters. it was very interesting to get the backstory on him and his brother (who i don't recall ever being mentioned before, and that felt like some piss-poor writing), and also see how he knows Selty (through Shinra, surprisingly).

the way Simon talks is always hilarious for me. the intonation and rhythmn is just too awkward, but almost melodic and even patronizing. and i can't say there's a character less intriguing than Izaya. what the hell is that guy's story?

the scene with the train warning lights and a dramatic/violent scene has been done a few times before, but i still like it.

looking forward to the next one

i just don't read when i know someone's said they're a few episodes ahead. i do need to go back and see what comments they made on episodes that i've watched though.

i was wondering, each episode seems to be centered around one particular character, with that character doing the narration as well, but i haven't been able to figure out what happened with episode 02. maybe it was so long ago, but it seemed like an older woman's voice narrating, and the only one i could figure who it might be would be Selty (who had episode 08). i know she's sorta done narration before, but i figured it was because she's sorta a main character and can only really "talk" with mental dialogue and the phone...

any clues?

episode 01 - Mikado
episode 02 - ?
episode 03 - Simon
episode 04 - Shinra
episode 05 - Kida
episode 06 - Kadota Ryouhei
episode 07 - Shizuo-chan
episode 08 - Selty

i really liked the scene in 08 with the fortune cookies. the blonde girl's perfectly flawed Japanese was strange, too. seriously, though, nothing tops Simon and his ridiculous sushi.

and, yeah, there it is. thought we could have had a little more drama about that reveal, but... well, things in the OP make a lot more sense now. Shinra has almost certainly got to know what's up... (also about the OP, i always thought it looked like he was carrying something suspicious under his coat, but...

i was also extremely disappointed with Frostii on episode 08. not only did they totally neglect Simon's lines for a scene, but then they made the cardinal sin of subbing a character responding to his unsubbed lines. i also thought they cut a few corners, and so i'm going to take a look at the other people releasing this

edit - and Ecleptic-BSS did translate the part where Simon was talking to Karisawa (and it actually explains the weird sushi at the end of the episode). I'm switching it up.

Lol, so waiting for Frostii means waiting for an incomplete episode... I can't wait to hear the rebuttals for this little revelation from the Frostii purists among us.

Anyway, Seiji's creepiness this episode surpassed my wildest imaginings. But what interested me most was what circumstances might have elicited Celty-head being in love with Creepy Seiji and apparently afraid of Celty-body. It seems like she might not have any memories after all.

shinta|hikari
Tue, 03-09-2010, 10:14 PM
It does seem like Celty-head did not have memories of the time when she was a Dullahan. She seemed like she was afraid of something intangible, and quite paranoid. Maybe having been split in two, both sections lost their memories and are essentially incomplete.

I guess it is more difficult for Celty-head to adjust to the situation because she seemed to be asleep the entire time she was a head. Having woken up looking quite normal (except for the neck scar), I guess she may not see herself like how Celty-body sees herself - as something supernatural.

However, it is also possible that she was awake during that time, and heard all of Seiji's ramblings which caused her to fall for him.

I hate Seiji now. I used to not care about him at all, but now he just seems freaking psycho in a very pathetic sense. I also find that I dislike Celty-head for loving this weirdo. I hope her "personality" disappears and gets overwritten by Celty-body's before the show ends. Seiji dying is also a preferred story path for me.

David75

I guess that Celty's head and body are two entities that developped separate spirits/behavior/personalities.
It has only been possible because they were separated for a very long time

Celty said she felt incomplete (not just because she has no head), that there are situations, feelings and many other things a normal human being would feel/experience she can not access.

Regarding the head, I think it was asleep for too long and didn't have as much time as the body to develop its own personality. Explaining why it acts a bit strange like a child in most cases.

Now the problem is:
What did they do with the head of the dead stalker...? they even named her (but I can't remember).
Can they just behead that composed body to reunite Celty's head and body?
Would that mean the stalker dies twice?
Suppose the remaining head isn't dead, can Celty use it?
Is Seji really the killer, or was he there at the right (bad) time? I guess he is, but who knows...

behead, head swap, head loss, split personalities, I kinda have a headache now :D

Anyway, Seiji's creepiness this episode surpassed my wildest imaginings. But what interested me most was what circumstances might have elicited Celty-head being in love with Creepy Seiji and apparently afraid of Celty-body.
Indeed, but I was even more impressed by Namie's totally insane and hypocritical philosophies. She can acknowledge that her uncle gave her dolls for his own sake, but not that she did the same for Seiji. I dunno what it is, but I can at least understand that Seiji is just another stupid kid who thinks that the only thing in the world that matters are his feelings, and that he can't even react to another human being well enough to ever care for one... I almost feel bad for him, but I do hope he doesn't make it.

Also, Izaya has got to be the most fucked up, interesting character in this whole show. I seriously believe he really doesn't think he's human, and his insane outburst at the end of this episode was almost as unnerving as it was entertaining. Izaya is as smart as he is malicious as he is crazy, and I love a bad guy who is smart.

They really do need to explain what kind of state Selty's head was in when it was in the jar. It seemed to me almost like Head didn't want to go back to the Body because she recognized that it was Body, and that's the whole unanswered question of what the fuck happened to get them separated in the first place (or second place, I suppose, since the Dullahan's head is 'normally' detached...)

I wouldn't be surprised if Head did somehow pick up on some of Seiji's affection for her. But i also can't help but dislike her for caring for a complete fuck like Seiji.

I guess that Celty's head and body are two entities that developped separate spirits/behavior/personalities.
It has only been possible because they were separated for a very long time
The weird thing is that the head was always separate from the body... that's what a Dullahan does. But I think it's got to go back to what caused Body to wake up in the graveyard and have no memories

And, because they keep name-dropping it, this has got to get down to Nebula.

And, because I have to throw out a theory every episode, my guess is that Nebula is going to take over the company once they can get Body AND Head as a subject, and that Izaya is going to be the one to give Nebula the chance, and that he might even be a member.

I wasn't precise enough.
When I meant separate, I meant it in distance and no contact at all.

Or maybe the separation is a more supernatural one, with what essentially connects the two parts being severed by some unknown factor, thus causing the memory loss.

well hell

i'd be lying if i said i saw that coming.

Ryuugamine couldn't have intended to have Selty snap like that, right? i mean, the whole big glorious moment just went down the tubes when it happened. the only one who i think might be enjoying it would be Izaya...

the cameo was a little long for my tastes (this whole episode felt stretched out to me), and it doesn't help that those two were among my least favorite Baccano! characters...

i am still supremely confused about so much in this series, and i really hope they can tie up all the loose ends. but i still really like this show.

What a great episode. There were a lot of stuff that were revealed and it was only enough to keep you wanting for more. I understand how hard is it for Selty, having someone else holding her very life. But now its exaclty what shinra is doing to Celty by not telling her about the whereabouts of the head. Its probably best for Shinra because Celty would leave him as soon as she finds her head. And as expected Izaya has something to do with it all. Awesome mid season plot point.

Shinra has hardly any control over Celty's life (mortality). She herself said that her body cannot die. The only reason she is with Shinra is because she wants to be with him. She even tried to say so when Shinra pointed out that regaining her head might cause her to leave his side regardless of her will.

There is no proof that Celty would leave him even if she does obtain her missing part, just like there is no proof that Celty's life can be extinguished by doing something to her head. They themselves admitted that their fears are born from their own baseless theories.

I do agree though that this is an awesome mid season episode, especially with the fast forwarded events featuring Ryugamine and glasses girl, and how Celty opened her arms in joy upon reaffirming her existence.

this show is doing well, and it was a pretty full (overly so?) episode.

i was totally not expecting the twist with the Stalker girl still being alive and, as much as I still hate Yagiri Seiji and his sister, I'm pretty content with the temporary conclusion that they gave those two

was wondering how they'd bring the Chatters from the Dollars board come back into play, and thought it was really very interesting that Mikado, Selty, and Izaya were the three we'd been hearing from all along.

and, of course, Izaya. can't say his insane plans come as a surprise, they've totally built him up as this kind of character, but it was still interesting because i was almost ready to write him off as a slightly deranged good guy after he helped Mikado and then just let him go

Shinra is such a bastard, but i can't help but feel for him. the selfish stuff he was spouting out to Selty was oddly endearing

so, well, it was a great episode, i thought. picked up right where we left off and

was pretty surprised that Simon knew about Izaya having the head (at least that's what i thought he was referring to). that guy is one of the few people who doesn't have a clearly defined side in this whole show.

speaking of Izaya, now that he's taken Season 1's antagonist under his wing, i think it's safe to say he's got dibs on the Big Bad role for this show.

new characters in the OP unsettled me quite a bit, but i was pleased how they introduced many of them so quickly in this episode. i loved the bit with the motorcycle cop and how he actually managed to freak out Celty. can't help but think that what Izaya said in episode 12 (about male Dullahans) when I think about this guy, but it just might be the motorcycle thing... Shinra's father is a good "eccentric scientist guy" and, of course, Tom isn't really a brand new character or anything...

the writing's been on the wall before, but this episode was the strongest at hinting that Anri is the Slasher and that Kida was involved in the Yellows before ryugamine came to town (it was just about flat out said this episode, and that's got to link up with the hospitalized woman and his connection with Izaya), and i feel those storylines are going to be crucial now that Ryugamine = Dollars has come to a full fruition.

also, ever since the identities of the online chatters came out in episode 12, i feel like everytime they speak i need to kick myself for not noticing beforehand how similar the voices are... could really hear Izaya's malicious needling and Celty's cute overreactions in this episode...

don't like either the new ED or new OP compared to the first ones... (but interesting to see that the girl from episode 2 appears, linked with Izaya even.... guess that doesn't mean the Yagiri/Izaya villain love is ever going to come to much...)

i had been waiting for Frostii, but there were a few times i found the TL work to not be up to snuff, and then they committed what i consider a cardinal sin for fansubbers, and i started checking out Ecliptic-whoever. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Ecliptic is super better than Frostii, but, for this series, I'd say they're fairly even. i was also extremely disappointed with Frostii on episode 08. not only did they totally neglect Simon's lines for a scene, but then they made the cardinal sin of subbing a character responding to his unsubbed lines. i also thought they cut a few corners, and so i'm going to take a look at the other people releasing this

edit - and Ecleptic-BSS did translate the part where Simon was talking to Karisawa (and it actually explains the weird sushi at the end of the episode). I'm switching it up.

This was it. I'd noticed a few times where I felt they cut corners in their TLs (but, to be fair, everybody has to do this to make the English text not absurdly awkward), but when you leave out a character's lines all together... that's just bush league in my book. it wasn't a critical part in the episode, but it did come into play later in the episode AND they dared sub Karisawa's response, even thought they must have felt Simon's words weren't important enough to be subbed...

also, as i've watched Ecleptic since episode 08, i really haven't found much to shake my finger at. not going to say they're top tier, but, well, if they're on par with Frostii and releasing faster...

EPISODE 14

so i actually laughed out loud and nearly died eating my dinner at the scene with Shinra and the shower. my god. i'm not expecting this show to pull such good comedy laughs right after all that spooky music (and that one theme is certainly ridiculously, almost over the top spooky...)

i wasn't in love with the idea of new characters for this second season, but anyone who goes "Follow me! Whoosh!" is OK in my book

it was also impossibly cute of Shizuo-chan to get so worked up about Selty being attacked by the Slasher.

Izaya lies straight to selty's face, then again raises the issue about a second Dullahan. while i hope this doesn't get into Bleach levels of "everyone you know is a Death God", I am quite intrigued as to what might happen once this 2nd Dullahan gets in the mix (and it's a question of when, not if, for me). And he is definitely ready to throw away anyone around Ryugamine to get what he wants...

and now there's demon swords and they're playing a big role and AAAAAAHH I'll eat my favorite Bills hat if the Slasher isn't Anri or Anri's mother.... (that little glimpse smacks of future explanatory flashback)

this is the best show airing. RARRR

about episode 15

i still can't help but be on (or over) the verge of laughter every time Simon talks. his way of speaking is just so ridiculous, the intonation is just completely wrong. strongest man in a fist fight, but "we're past that era"...

and, holy moley, the scenes with --Saika-san has entered the channel-- are always excellent, but this one in particular was really disturbing. i had written off Shizuo-chan (and i am not a fan of the way Ecliptic-BSS decided to write his nickname in this episode) as largely a comic relief / action quota character, but at this rate... his absolutely no flinch "I get it. I'm gonna kill you." was absolute badass

well, this episode had just about the most info about the Stalker we've ever had in it, and i'm still confused as fuck as to what is going on with this kitchen knife of a demon blade and the whole lot of it....

that poor journalist guy... and it even seems like his daughter was the victim of that awful, creepy teacher...

this show is layers and layers of awesome. i don't think "complex" even gets close to describing it

So i guess Anri was the blade's last possession before this reporter, but what is strange is why it went after her after it was done

From as far as i can tell Mikado is the leader of the dolars and Masaomi is the apparent leader of the yellow scarves, so i can't wait to see how those roles will mess up with their friendship

I love the way this is turning out with each of the three friends being the leader of a group. Mikado/Dollars vs. Masaomi/Yellow Scarves vs. Anri/Slashers. It's going to be pretty interesting when they find out about each other. I'm hoping that a huge battle between the groups ensues.

Ryllharu
Tue, 05-04-2010, 04:05 AM
I imagine that Masaomi will be pretty upset when he finds out Mikado was the leader of the the Dollars all along and never once extended an invite to him. He's been curious about the Dollars the whole time since he left the Yellow Scarves. I wouldn't be surprised if he found out, and then returned to the Yellow Scarves as a result of feeling betrayed.

But I don't really see the same situation (at least in this episode) with Anri and the Slashers. It seems more like she and Saika will be regaining control from the impostor-Saika and the crazy girl. I'm not sure how she even wrested control over the blade herself, but I just don't see why she would allow them to remain possessed.

-------------------------------------------

There shouldn't be any question now that Anri's Saika is the original. If she can summon it under her clothes and then pull it out in a similar manner to the way Celty hides her phone, wallet and other things, it is surely a true demon blade. It wasn't what I expected. I had figured the original Saika had been melted down or broken and reforged into multiple smaller blades.

From the flashbacks (which look like they will go into detail next time), it looks like Saika possessed Anri's mother, killed her father and then herself, leaving Anri surrounded by their bodies and Saika stabbed into the floor. How she managed to make an arrangment with it...I can't even speculate.

really sucks that bSS is out. i just watched a Commie fansub of another show, and i couldn't even get through half of it because they did just such a piss-poor job all around.

i suppose i'll give Ani^co a shot. although, if they're that same group i remember from Gundam SEED Destiny, they're pretty awful as well... i'll see Commie's as well.

The commie fansub was tolerable enough.

Well hell. So the real questions are all still unanswered. I hope they show us how Anri came to control Saika, but i also wonder if she's known all along that this "child Saika" was out there trying to take over more people. I can only imagine, if Anri's is the original, that she must have made a "child" at some point. and that's going to be an interesting story as well.

I can only imagine, if Anri's is the original, that she must have made a "child" at some point. and that's going to be an interesting story as well. From the sound of things, it didn't seem like there was ever a point after her parents were murdered that Anri didn't have control over the blade. She seems to have kept it a secret this whole time.

It sounded like the "mother" Saika that the stalker-girl possesses has been around for a long enough time that it "forgot" that it was a child blade itself. I'm thinking that the True Saika created it a considerable length of time before Anri's parents were murdered, and after being separated by the suppression Anri exhibits on the True blade, started to believe that it was the original.

This whole thing did make the narration several episodes ago make a lot more sense. A lot of the characters have been narrating the episodes that focus on them in terms of character development, but Anri's was strange in that she kept referring to herself as "the girl," rather than the first person like Mikado or the others did.

Unless the Slasher's leader only gained the memories of the direct previous leader, the "infiltrators" the Slashers have in the Dollars and Scarves should be able to figure out at least one of the leaders. and i have zero idea why Celty doesn't just tell Mikado what she knows...The implication at the hospital was that the leader of the Slashers now knows just about everything. The Slasher Leader knows what role Izaya has in a lot of the things happening, and with the right combination of people, can probably figure out who the former leader of the Yellow Scarves is. There are a lot of followers of the Yellow Scarves within the Slashers.

As for Celty and Mikado, I don't think she really knows who he really is. She speaks with him online, and can probably connect his real life name and appearance to someone very high "ranking" in the Dollars, but I don't think she knows that he is "admin" or that she is rather high in the ranks herself. Only Izaya seems to know that, and is a co-head of the Dollars, just lacking Mikado's god chat/forum god powers.

Aside from that, Celty is pretty respectful of others' privacy.

I never said for THORA to "sub" them... I said "release" them... I know very well they don't sub their own releases. Doesn't change the fact their releases are very high quality and what I would like to archive, even if they use CrunchySubs subtitles.
If your problem is image quality i don't see what you're complaining about since all these 720p encodes we've been getting are pretty great

Because everyone thinks Kida is boring.

Seriously, there hasn't been that great of a deal of things to discuss with the Yellow Scarves vs Dollars vs Slashers episodes. Kida gets all emo about everything, Masaomi gets cold feet about everything, and Anri has big boobs. Repeat for three or four episodes.

I guess it is still awesome that the only dedicated Enforcers that the Dollars have is Erika and Walker. They're insane too. Sure, Celty and Shizuo are there as well, but they do what they want, they don't go around looking for trouble like the other two do.
I've personally been enjoying this second part every bit as much as i did the first one. This trinity of power formed by the 3 friends with Izaya in control of everyone's string in the dark is pretty entertaining

Was that a series finale or a season finale? I'm unsure since Izaya still has Celty's head.

I really hope this doesn't end here. A few OAVs would be great if a series is too much to ask for.

just watched last ep (24). Disappointing ending, to be honest. I always thought that the Gold Bananas were by far the weakest of the three groups, yet they were made to be the big enemy. Thus, when Anri/Slasher, Ryugamine/Dollars/Celty invaded their place, I didnt feel any excitement. Fantasy creatures with super powers vs a bunch of idiots, yeah, lol.

What also didnt feel right was how Izaya didnt see any consequences. HE was the one who brought turmoil over the city, riling people up against each other. Yet, a single Simon-punch is all he gets.

Lasty,....those super powers totally didnt fit the show. I mean, we had Celty and the Slasher from the very beginning, but thats one thing. However, Shizu being a Terminator, Simon another one, and then suddenly Masaomi and Izaya have Dragonball-like power, too? Too much. It felt to me as if the show makers couldnt decide between two concepts and, amateurishly, mixed them both together.

Ah, well, at long last, Iīve finished this show :D

I'll bite.

I agree that the Yellow Whatevers aren't much of a threat, but the DRRR series apparently goes on quite a bit after this (we can only hope for a sequel). That's why the scene mid-series with Mikado calling a meet to rise against Yagiri Namie is more of a climax than the latter half of the series. Very underwhelming. But what they lacked in supernatural powers the Yellow Scarves infested by the Blue Squares make up for in sheer numbers and brutality. It's similar to the reason the Dollars were a threat to Namie.

As for Shizuo, Simon, Izaya and Masaomi, I think each of those instances is warranted, if a little exaggerated. Shizuo's immense strength comes from the abuse of his body largely since he was very young. They say broken bones grow back stronger, and he's broken nearly every bone in his body at least a dozen times. Simon is a Russian beast, and a giant at that. He's 2.2 meters (7+ ft) tall!

Masaomi gets his strength from simply being brutal in the past and tons of combat experience. He's not out of place when you consider the Dollars' enforcers (Erika (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=character&charid=13869), Walker (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=character&charid=13870), Kadota (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=character&charid=13867), and Togusa (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=character&charid=14866)) are as equally feared as Masaomi once was. They drive around in their van, are a bunch of otaku, but were all prominent members of the Blue Squares.

Izaya is well...Izaya. He is the Skill to Shizuo's Strength. He makes up the difference with extensive combat/knife experience, and his agility is rather commendable. But there is undoubtedly a reason for that ninja-like skill. If you watch the dvd Episode 12.5, Izaya's twin sisters appear and at least one of them displays equal agility and acrobatic combat skills. Perhaps they come from that kind of family.

Just like Baccano, DRRR is filled with extraordinary people coming together for some reason or another.

Just like Baccano, DRRR is filled with extraordinary people coming together for some reason or another.

This.

You can't really ask for a lot of realism in a show where there are headless bikers and demon swords.

MFauli
Mon, 04-25-2011, 10:34 AM
This show pointed out how scared Masaomi was, so scared that he couldnt help his girl friend at that time. Later on he fights off the collective Neo Blue Squares all by himself, delivering roundhouse kicks and what not. Shizuo was shown to be crazy strong in the beginning, but then he was shot several times and just kept walking around, then grabbed a whole lamp pole and swung it around. And Anri-chan got Sharingan eyes.

None of these were clear in the beginning of the series, so thatīs what I mean with lack of realism. It just popped outta nowhere.

Btw. I have to admit that I dont like the concept of this series, yes. EVERY character is a smart ass. Usually, a story has one or two such characters, maybe more when it is a long-running plot. But there is a reason for that, you know. Because its more interesting to wach imperfect characters, losers, idiots, and so on. In Durarara, every single person was a Uchiha Madara, lol. But you need Narutos and Sakuras and Rock Lees and ... to create interesting scenes. I guess ill prepare for Ryllharuīs shitstorm incoming :D, but thatīs how I felt about this show. Itīs boring when everyone is a leader.

I'm cool with your preference in shows. I only disagree about your complaint that it isn't realisitc. I think Shizuo throwing around people and vending machines already shows why it is wrong to expect this show to be grounded in real world rules.

MFauli
Mon, 04-25-2011, 11:04 AM
well, just sticking to one of my complaints: Masaomi-kun. It really makes no sense for me that he was too scared to help his girl friend, when he got around kicking ass at the end of the show. Unless you want to interpret it as "ever since that incident, he was training in secret and thus became stronger". But I must have missed any proof for that.

Its really annoying how you always end up comparing things to a generic shonen. Not a very reliable source for 'interesting scenes'

MFauli
Mon, 04-25-2011, 12:16 PM
Well, "generic shounen" create the most basic, but also most effective tools for interesting scenes. So I dont think it is wrong to use them for comparisons. Itīs safe to say that thereīs not a single scene in the whole of Durarara that is as interesting to watch as the Rock Lee vs Gaara-fight in Naruto, and yes, thatīs the definition of generic shounen.

Itīs boring when everyone is a leader. No shitstorm necessary. I flat-out like Baccano much better than DRRR, for much of the same reason. There really isn't anyone to contrast all these insane personalities and extraordinary skills.

There's Ryuugamine, oh, but he's actually a bit of a mastermind. What he lacks in combat he makes up in [online] communication skills and once he gets his confidence back, organization and leadership. Now that he's allied with the leader of the Slashers, he really has nothing to fear at all.

Kadota and pals, nope, he and otaku pals are very experienced street brawlers/interrogators/torturers.

Even Harima Mika and Yagiri Seiji? She's rather skilled at stalking as well as the sub-set skill of breaking and entering, and he's known to be viciously brutal when it comes to his obsession (Celty's head and lookalikes).

There really isn't anyone like Jacuzzi, Firo, Lua, the Genoard siblings, or the Gandor brothers. Everyone has some absurd level in one skill or another that is far beyond the norm. There is a reason why Ladd Russo was the best character in Baccano. He was pretty normal compared to his peers in the show, and loved to kill people for their hubris. He made being (relatively) normal, extraordinary.

Durarara!! X2 Horriblesubs Episode 1 (http://nyaa.se/?page=download&tid=643946)

-------------------------

This episode was better than the entire first season altogether. So much Celty goodness!!! I almost died from Dullahan overdose. CeltyXShinra is my favorite pairing in the Naritaverse, followed closely by ClaireXChane, and then FiroXEnnis.

Unfortunately, this means we won't be getting much of Celty in the coming episodes...

I felt really bad for our poor dojikko dullahan, who lost all her cash.

This was actually a really good first episode for a series that had a five year gap. They reintroduced everyone in a way that you can remember some of the stuff that went on and who they were. Even the characters that got very little time in season 1, but are obviously going to be a bit more important now. The two sisters perhaps?

The update on the van's door was a nice touch. Shiba Miyuki instead of whoever it used to be.

Also nice to see that Anri's boobs didn't shrink with the studio swap. I'd actually say that Shuka is doing a remarkable job copying Brain's Base, but since Director and Character Designer are the same as season 1, so this is to be expected. No copying involved, just continuation.

The great part about this sequel is there are 2 more cours incoming (this is Shou, then next is Ten, and finally Ketsu). I hope that means the entire story will be animated. If so, kudos to Narita and whoever decided to do this. It would show how great stories with amazing characters should be adapted. I am so sick and tired of anime original endings, and after watching Shirobako and being shown how it is usually the director's call how the anime ending would go, there is little excuse for shitty finales.

DRRR x2 - 04 (http://nyaa.se/?page=download&tid=650948)

----------------

Well, this episode overall was pretty fun.

Celty being a huge dork, the twin's plan sorta working unintentionally, Anri being her secretly-badass self, the emotionless love story progressing, and Namie being amusingly mean to Izaya.

One little feature I really liked was how the twins act opposite on the chatroom to their "real" personalities. It emphasizes how mental the two of them are, and highlights the fact that their personalities are just one humongous act.

If there was anything I had to fault this series for, it is how obvious they are making it that Aoba (blue-haired transfer student) is scheming to take over the Dollars, or at the very least fuck with Ryuugamine. They give him "the look" moments all the time, they had him introduce himself to Ryuugamine right away, he tries to start usergroups at the school, injecting himself into their business all the time, his little high school schemes, his obvious two-faced behavior, etc. It has always seemed like he wants to be Ryuugamine.

I've recently discovered a new thing in life called Celty Sturluson. I expressed my love by buying 2 figures of her. I'm ready for the coming anime.

Now to guess which character will be on the Van door in Ep1. My guess is someone from Fate/kaleid liner Prisma. Runner up would be Popura from Working!!!

---------------------------------

Wow, I can't remember the last time something took four episodes to cover one day. I remember it was mostly two, back when this first aired. That's kind of understandable though with such a large cast now.

30+ episodes in, it's still hilarious to see Shizuo bulldoze everybody. Mikado's by far my least liked character. His weak demeanour and half-assed efforts shit me off.

---------------------------

At this point I'm considering marathonning this show then this is all over because:

1) The internet chat isn't typesetted by HorribleSubs
2) There's quite a bit of detail that benefits from being retained across various weeks (esp since it takes 4 days to cover a "day", and it's not until week 5 or something where to go back to the story/perspective of week 1's characters)
3) Not much discussion that benefits from weekly viewing anyway

Anyone here know of any subs that typeset the chats? I'll download a few random ones to check them out.

I just marathoned this (http://www.nyaa.se/?page=download&tid=813033) to the end.

What can I say? It was absolutely awesome. I can't believe they managed to flesh out and use up the extremely large cast. Amazing. This show needs to be watched in one sitting. Too many things happen to too many people to keep track of on a weekly basis, but if you watch it straight, you'll see how intricately woven the story is from dozens of finer plot and character threads. The foreshadowing was excellent, and the climax climactic. Everything got tied up properly, despite how dangerously close it came to dangling everything all over the place. Magical black glue literally pasted everything together at the very end.

Shinra X Celty is the best couple in anime period.

I will avoid spoiling until I see others watch this gem to the end. Trust me, it's worth way more than one weekend of your life.

The series would have been better if Mikado and Masaomi weren't main characters this time around. Their character arc ended 5 years ago as far as I'm concerned. Their arc was just a rehash of what already happened with them before. I wanted to drop the series every week they were the main focus of an episode.

The rest of it was good, if not great. But those two were terrible.

Finally managed to finish the first series. In all, I had a much better impression when I first tried it 6 years ago, I had stopped on episode 11. Never came back around to finish it.

Still a good watch, but just thought it was going to be much better once I returned to it. Not sure when I'll continue with the sequels, but it should be a while since not really in the mood to continue.

I wish we'd get more Baccano!.
