Summary: Kimi ni Todoke is about a girl named Kuronuma Sawako. She is nicknamed Sadako (from the ring) because many people see her as strange and often mistake her for a ghost. A boy called Kazehaya kun becomes her friend and, to her, is "100% refreshness."

Kuronuma Sawako’s one wish in life is to make friends. That’s a difficult proposition when everyone who meets her cowers in terror. She admires her classmate, Kazehaya-kun, a popular, easygoing and 100% refreshing guy who is nice with everyone, even with her.

that was good!

i thought i wouldn't like the animation, but i actually really liked it.

man i loved the use of super-deformed. it reminds me of Otoboku. it's just used so well here.

dang i really liked Sawako's character. how she was this super socially awkward/rejected chick who was really nice and entirely positive. man, i thought the dude was gonna confess...

it kinda deals with serious issues, like her being bullied. but it's such a light-hearted, fun to watch comedic series.. i think i'll enjoy this.

This episode makes me feel:

Sawako is so hopelessly selfless and good natured, it's hard not to be drawn in.

Yano and Yoshida were great too. I definitely hadn't heard Miyuki Sawashiro that way before (she usually plays the breathy heroines), and Yuko Sanpei usually plays boys (Renton from E7). Mamiko Noto nailed Sawako perfectly.

This series might challenge ARIA for that special warm place in my heart.

SFW may start doing 720p releases instead. I'm the encoder on this project.

I hear Eclipse is picking up this series too.

Man, this is easily my favorite of the new fall shows I've watched so far. I loved it. Mamiko Noto as Sawako is perfect to me. I loved her work as Yell (Akikan!) and as Kotomi (Clannad).

I completely agree. They work really well in shoujo series where the feelings, thoughts and expressions play a big role.

What a fast series this seems to be. Might be all the shounen I've watched lately (and some labeled seinen but still 90% shounen in reality) that makes this feel so rapid. But it indeed was almost like a confession in the first episode. Not a bad thing, of course, seeing how it will place the emphasis on other things than the preconfession stuff. Though I'm not saying they couldn't stretch this for a bit still.

Very good, very good indeed. A refreshing series.

Hrmm, each of the three groups translates Kazehaya's personality differently.

SFW - Refreshing
FMS - Pleasant
Eclipse - Lively

Which do you prefer?

Sawayaka means refreshing, but that is generally not used to describe a person in English, so the other groups used similar words that are more apt for people. Lively seems a bit off though. If anything, Kazehaya seems quite relaxed.

Hmmm my first shoujo ... i find it relaxing

But the order seems reversed; the girl was the first to like the boy and we had a "confession" on the first episode, it's like bizarro world or something

Just 1 thing, i don't want to sounds like an asshole or anything but i found her smile in the last moments to be creepy as hell :x

Kraco
Thu, 10-15-2009, 02:36 PM
Yeah, I also thought there's some temporal anomaly in this episode. The first episode had that almost confession but suddenly the beginning of this episode had taken whole steps backwards. Fortunately it seemed to reach a point somewhat close to the ending of the first episode towards the end. I hope the beginning of the third episode won't take again steps back...

I really like this series so far. Sometimes Sadako's creepiness feels quite forced by the plot, but if you ignore that there are lots of really nice scenes here. I like the destined couple feeling as well (the only kind of romance setting I really ever wish to see), and I hope there won't be any serious triangles in this series.

lol, yeah. dude was just at the back and he was like "uh, back of the room window seat. not giving it up". that was awesome.

awman, this show is so good! i do hope we see progression in their relationship though. now that she's finally realized her feelings.

i feel bad for the dude, cause he keeps doubting himself, and he's like "ugh, i'm so full of myself, of course she isn't into me" ahh!

Yeah, that was one of the best scenes so far. It very nicely and unexpectedly broke the sugary scene of those people who had visibly recognized Sawako's real character surrounding her. Kind of like made a seat next to her seem nothing abnormal, unlike the obviously purposeful way the others were choosing their places.

Haha, I liked Sawako's interaction with the puppy. It went from cute and innocent to mean and vicious in a matter of seconds. I also liked the confused expression it got when Kazehaya said that he and Sawako were friends. The question mark over it's head was a nice touch.

I hope they give Yano and Yoshida more screen time. I'm especially fond of Yoshida and the way she bursts into tears every time something touches her heart. They are a pretty entertaining duo to watch and I look forward to seeing them in every episode.

I was pleased with that ep, for some reason I had a hard time entering the show with ep1 and didn't enjoy it at all.

Now I can say I will wait for each ep, each week.

The designs remind me of Bokura Ga Ita, kind of modernized maybe.

i feel bad for the dude, cause he keeps doubting himself, and he's like "ugh, i'm so full of myself, of course she isn't into me" ahh!I don't really feel bad for Kazehaya, because it is a pretty natural reaction given the position he is in. He knows he has a lot of friends and that a ton of girls like him. He just doesn't realize how dense Sawako is. Their mutual misunderstanding, Sawako thinking he's too good for her, Kazehaya thinking she doesn't see him that way, is very cute.

you know, i like their characters, but i really don't like their character designs :\I'm ambivalent towards Yoshida's character design, but I really like Yano's because she reminds me of another female character from another shoujo series, Kokoro Tokunaga from Ai Baby.

Fun fact from the manga: In the first chapter (first episode), the author didn't bother to determine which one was which, she named Yoshida and Yano as a pair.

Dammit, Sawako is just too cute. I mean, that face with that voice, that voice! (Mamiko Noto fan since Anna Coppolla, Enma Ai, and Tsukamoto Yakumo)

Wait, did they just say she looks "normal" when she smiled? She looks fantastic compared to the other girls in the show, at least to me. So does that mean that she actually has average looks by the show's standards, or was that girl just so surprised at the contrast between Sadako and Sawako that she couldn't see properly?

So does that mean that she actually has average looks by the show's standards, or was that girl just so surprised at the contrast between Sadako and Sawako that she couldn't see properly? It's that she normally never smiles and I think it helps that her smiles are so purely genuine. There's never any ambiguity in Sawako, nor any smiling for the sake of being social. When she smiles, she is truly incredibly happy. As for her looks, it's all about the almond-shaped eyes.

I liked the little moments in this episode the most. Pin's staredown with Sawako to prove he was awesome, and Kazehaya's corresponding failure. The scene with the note where she passed it on to Ryu, and again, Kazehaya's immediate swift rescue of the misplaced note. Sawako admitting she studies in her spare time with a confused head tilt.

Yano and Yoshida are still some of my favorites. Yoshida's crying, Yano's encouragement to Sawako, etc. All around great characters.

My favorite part was when Kazehaya panicked and slammed the table in an attempt to save himself from embarrassment because of Sawako's mistaken mail delivery. It is just so typical(ly cute!) of her to lack the confidence to even think that it was addressed to her.

It is really absurd if people actually start doubting Sawako just because of some rumour, although it seems something of the sort might happen in the preview. Are there people stupid enough to actually think that someone who cannot even speak properly to people, much less someone who drives people away with just her presence is able to spread rumours (whatever content they may have)?

This is a shoujo, the stupidity level of general unnamed characters surpass shounen by a healthy margin. I'm just thankful that there haven't been any extended bullying of the main character, since that generally just makes me stop watching/reading.

I think the ones at fault here are those around her. She is obviously socially inept, so expecting more from Sawako is asking too much. Kazehaya did the right thing by persistently confronting her, and he got a consolation prize of being told that Sawako can never hate him no matter what he does (quite a big claim, actually - how much do you have to like a person to actually be able to say something like this?).

In the beginning, I really liked that the two girls laughed the whole thing off, but then they started going against their better judgment based on obviously incomplete information. They didn't even let Sawako finish her sentence (twice)!? If the plot didn't require such a stupid event from happening it really should have been impossible.

Still, the fact that they actually cried (all night) shows how much they care for Sawako, which sort of lessens my dislike of what they did. Sometimes strong feelings towards a person is a source of great insecurity, and that is probably where their misunderstanding stemmed from.

Those were quite poisonous bitches and completely unafraid of Sawako as well. The situation doesn't look too good for her as she, by thinking logically, believed it was about a misunderstanding when in fact they were purposefully sullying their reputations and destroying their relationships. I wonder if Sawako can even understand such undisguised hostility. Maybe she can if she thinks about how it's going to hurt Yano and Yoshida.

Kazehaya is pretty obvious. I think Yano and Yoshida both already know about it as well. He's pretty dense if he thinks he can hide it from anyone, but luckily for him, Sawako is socially inept, and wouldn't recognize it either.

I do think Ryu realized from the beginning, as out of it as he is, that Sawako would never make those kinds of remarks, and that she did truly care about those two. He called Yoshida out on it last episode, in his Ryu ways.

I did really like that Yoshida threatened Yuka (the lead girl in the bathroom) by reminding her of how many boys she defeated one-on-one in middle school. Ninety-Nine! It wasn't a rumor about her, it was true! No wonder she wasn't bothered by it.

A great episode. Even Sawako's density is slowly relenting under all the doki doki moments. I wonder how long it will take for her to recognize it as love or if Yano and Yoshida get bored of watching it and tell her what it's all about. Even Kurumi should know it now after seeing Kazehaya staring out of the window at Sawako so intensively with such caring expressions no less.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find the shape of Sawako's eyes to be irresistible. That alone makes her look so much better than anyone else, even if she's actually supposed to be somewhat plain looking.

There hasn't been any of those cliche shoujo scenes where an antagonist is around a corner making some nasty comment about how Sawako will totally get hers for stealing Kazehaya (thankfully), but it is pretty obvious that Kurumi is playing games. She hides around corners and calls other girls idiots, but hasn't made any particularly glaring looks at Sawako. Even in this episode, her expression didn't really change, she just intensely looked at the two. She denies and denies that she likes Kazehaya, but she has most of the other girls in the school saying that she and Kazehaya naturally fit together. So even if all these girls who attacked Sawako have some kind of pact, Kurumi seems to be the one that all the girls would accept, through whatever it is that she's done.

Yano and Chizu picking on Sawako to call everyone by their first names was a treat too.

Wow... that would be brilliant. Evil, but brilliant.

But you might be giving her a bit too much credit, i haven't seen any planning out of her above the level of your average high school bitchThat would be bad, especially because of the saintly personality that Sawako has. Sawako also seemed to have quite a bit of trouble realizing that the reason she felt hurt in this episode is because she like likes Kazehaya. She's so socially inept that I wonder how long it will be before she figures it out, or if her friends will actually suggest it to her first. Yano and Chizu obviously recognize it, and Yano particularly exploits it for her own amusement. So if someone asked her, and Sawako still hadn't realized what Kazehaya actually means to her, she quite possibly might help them, hurting herself in the process like she did before. Totally because she doesn't know any better, having been so isolated for so long.

As for Kurumi, I think she already has done something above the average high school bitch. Whether or not she actually did it, it has been heavily implied that she was the one who originated the rumors. So either she has absolute control over the other girls, or she thought ahead and quietly and politely started all the rumors about Sawako and Yano (Chizu's turned out to all be true) without ever implicating herself. I think it would be the latter since she seems to have a lot of the girls suggesting that she would be the perfect fit for Kazehaya despite them all having some form of agreement. Any plans she has made are anything but overt.

Unlike a lot of the other cliche female antagonists in shoujo series, Kurumi really seems to plan ahead, far ahead. That puts her well above the average high school bitch.

David75

Regarding the doll with hair that grows, even without a precise translation, it was possible to understand it's not a compliment...

First Kurumi thinks that to herself while she moves out of the scene, you could think of a contrast between what she thinks, and what Sawako thinks. Remember that from the begining of the show, Sawako almost always thinks the opposite of what reality is like regarding her relationships.

Then Yano and Chizu immediately thought what girls would usually think regarding Sawako.

And I think the very long hair doll has been shown at least 3 times.

Then there was a subtle pun in the Sawako changes her hair scene, with how her hair is in three simple parts with a funny animation.
I laughed hard at the begining of that "Hair sequence" I admit.

So yes, Kurumi wasn't thinking something really positive as a doll for Sawako.

Ryllharu
Fri, 12-04-2009, 04:12 AM
I believe the "doll with hair that grows" is some classic Japanese horror story about a possessed coming of age doll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hina_Matsuri). Or at least something similar to that. Maybe the doll in the story isn't as specific as that. It's definitely a horror story.

The one thing I really love about Kimi ni Todoke is how they take all kinds of stereotypes in shoujo series and sort of turn them over.

Sawako's two best friends are the kind of characters that are typically the antagonists to main characters. A bully (Chizu) and the enjo kosai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjo_kōsai) type (Yano). We've already seen that they are far more nuanced than that, but outwardly, that is how they appear. Chizu is actually pretty emotional and kind for a yanki type character, and Yano is very intelligent, and while she's nice, she certainly enjoys toying with her friends.

Similarly, Kurumi tries all sorts of nasty things to Sawako, but Sawako is just too innocent and dense to get it. She missed all of the subtext Kurumi was trying to tell her, and even twisted it around to get some good advice out of it!

'Kazehaya is nice to everyone' (You're not special)
'Just because he talks to you doesn't make you special' (she even outright says it)
'Try talking to someone who isn't as nice to everyone' (Keep away from Kazehaya)
'Everyone has their own match' (...and yours isn't Kazehaya)
'Kazehaya and I have a lot in common after all' (Clearly I am a better fit for him)

She even turns it around and stabs Kurumi with a surprised reaction that they are just friends (emphasis hers).

I really liked how Kurumi completely underestimated Sawako's naiveté. It does look like she is going to take advantage of Sawako's saintly helpful behavior. Damn you cliffhangers!

Kazehaya calling Kurimi "Kurimizawa" in front of Sawako was probably on purpose, or at least a reflex he had because of the uneasiness he feels. I might be an after effect of the astonishment he had seeing Kurumi befriend Sawako. He's been knowing Kurumi for a long time and probably feels there's something wrong there.

Regarding the development Kraco saw coming, I now feel like Sawako should be able to escape that plot.

Why? Because of the naïveté and pure heartedness she bears that did wonders to counter Kurmi's subtle attacks as Ryllharu wrote.

I feel like Sawako will indeed try and help Kurumi getting closer to Kazehaya. She is that caring and her image of Kurumi will entice her doing it.
But to do so, she'll have to consider the relationships between Kurumi and Kazehaya. She will have to understand how a girl and a boy have to interact when they love each other and she will then understand what is that specific feeling and akwardness she feels near him.

On Kazehaya's hand, he will probably be troubled by Sawako's actions, that will probably in the end force him getting past his barriers and put an end to Kurumi's trap. Doing so at the right time will get him nearer to Sawako, who at the time would be less afraid and knowing just what's needed not to run away from him.

I was wrong, the woman is a manipulative mastermind. Even so, i couldn't help but laugh in how everything she threw at Sawako came to bite her in the ass every single time.

There's no way they can wrap this up nicely in just 2 episodes so here's hoping for an open ending and an eventual second season

Kraco
Sat, 12-12-2009, 02:21 PM
Nah. They can surely wrap this in two episodes if they want. I was thinking myself along the same lines as David. Those two need a kick in their asses as currently they are completely frozen in their nervous state and it probably hasn't even clearly visited Sawako's mind she might actually like Kazehaya. Considering how she does have both parents it's kind of strange how she has no idea of boy-girl relationships whatsoever.

Kurumi forcing those issues to surface, like David said, could easily end this series even in two episodes (if this indeed is 12 eps; AniDB lists a 13th episode's airing date, though).

I'd have rather had the prediction to be off, but having seen a few shoujo shows and read a number of shoujo manga I saw it from miles away. Hardly surprising, like Animus noted.

I don't think that having the shy Sawako or the gutless Kazehaya admit their feeling to both themselves and each other in the space of 2 episodes would feel natural at all

It doesn't necessarily have to be both admitting their feelings to each other. Sawako even realizing she has those kind of feelings might be a large enough movement to mark an ending.

I think they can wrap the series up nicely in 3 episodes. Like Kraco, I've seen enough shoujo series to see this sort of climax, yet non-conclusion plenty of times. Kurumi will be the big hurdle before the non-ending.

There is no shoujo series that can match Kare Kano's non-ending. The last 5 episodes weren't even about the main couple!

But a non ending is what i'm hoping for, i think there's still too much story to tell and that at least the possibility of a sequel should be left for us

I guess that possibility it will all come down to the DVD/Bluray sales, here's hoping they fare well in this tough market of K-ONs and Bakemonogataris

----------------------------------

Going back to what I said last week, I really love that Kimi ni Todoke takes all kinds of stereotypes in shoujo series and adds complexities to them.

As such, after this episode, I find it really hard to hate Kurumi. In fact, I rather like her as a character, even though I absolutely want her to lose. She's a lot more complex than the standard deceitful bitch character in most series. I don't really even think she's a bad person. She's just really frustrated, and even more so by Sawako.

This is especially true when Sawako foils Kurumi's plan to exploit Sawako's good nature. Other nice girls might fall for it, but Sawako is just too honest. We would usually see the girl helping out, feeling horrible the whole time, then exploding in some dramatic outburst of love. Instead, Sawako just cuts Kurumi off right there.

Which brings me back to the complexities of Kurumi. She mentioned that she's popular, so it is that much more difficult to get attention from a personality type like Kazehaya. Kurumi seems happy and satisfied, remains active and social with her classmates, even people outside her class. She doesn't need any help and she doesn't need to get brought back into the mix. So while she talks to Kazehaya, she doesn't seem like a special case he might need to pay attention toward.

She also shows her true face, which is honest, but isn't really that much of a stereotype either. She doesn't show others when she gets frustrated, that she might find them annoying. She never shows others that she's upset or angry. Her personality might be fake, but she's really just doing what everyone does when they want to be liked by the majority of people they meet.

Nor do I think she would really be trying these tactics is she was "herself." Notably, they're rather cliche sorts of things you would see in dramas or manga. She expects them to work, but when against a mighty opponent like Sawako, a honest and straightforward approach would probably work better. It isn't like Kurumi goes after all kinds of guys and plays them. She is only after one, and has only ever been after one from Chizu's story about middle school.

She's also surprisingly likable when she loses her facade around Sawako. She hates her old lady name, hates to lose, gets frustrated and annoyed, and amazingly has a refreshing air around her when she's honest.

Plus, I felt kind of bad for her when Sawako managed to interrupt her rendezvous with Kazehaya by remotely stopping her with a precision, ballistically fired shoe. It's just such a wonderfully divine inner working of fate.

Kraco
Wed, 12-16-2009, 04:52 PM
Tricking Sawako to talk with the other guy, provided it succeeds, will likely push Kazehaya forward more openly. That'll likely be the final failure for Kurumi. Still, it's not like she had anything to lose, and her first honest moment with Sawako at the beginning of the episode already showed she either doesn't realise it's Kazehaya making the choice or she already knows she has lost but doesn't want to admit it.

I thought I'd hate Kurumi more but like with Ryll, her honest moments make her considerably less bad in my eyes. She's desperate, and desperate people do whatever it takes.

Oh, the shoe ballistic missile strike was brilliant.

Right behind Sawako, Yano is without a doubt my other favorite. She's so evil. She doesn't even have to directly threaten. Being the mastermind of their group (since Chizu is an idiot and Sawako is naive), she can confront Kurumi merely by laying out the facts. She comes off so menacing in that scene, without even doing anything directly. Making an enemy of Yano would be a mistake someone probably would never be able to repeat.

Her vanity is her weakness though. Kurumi definitely got a good hit in when Yano was comparing her skin to Kurumi's. Everything about her is just so much like a typical shoujo villain.

I also really like how Kurumi's plans sort of backfire on her, or at least misfire, but only whenever anyone is in close proximity to Sawako. Ryu went behind the shed, sure, but as soon as Sawako showed up, he even showed her the note! Rather than be hurt, Sawako was amazed that her thoughts appeared on the paper. I almost expected her to lightly clap in delight, like watching a magician perform. The best part of that scene is that the two just sit quietly there for a few minutes without saying anything after that.

Similarly, Kazehaya falls for Kurumi's lies, but once he sees Sawako, it looks like he's going to dash off and snatch her away from Ryu (who will gladly let him take her).

It's like Kurumi is cursed by Sawako!

Note: It was somehow harder to see when animated, but Kurumi really snatched the paper out of Pin's hand. That illicited a smirk out of me. I love her desperation.

Yano and Chizu were the stars of this episode, even if Chizu was still there for comedy relief. I love Yano the most when she goes evil.

As for Kurumi and Pin, she certainly deserved some payback from her scheme involving Ryu and Sawako, but given how incredibly it backfired, I kind of feel bad for her. Pin insulted her badly enough by assuming she liked him, but to reject her too! Kazehaya showing up at the peak of it just made me pity her.

Sawako could really get the positive fact that Kurumi values of her as a real oponent...
In Sawako's mind, it's very important.
It will also probably have her realise that she really is loving Kazehaya in a way she has to go out with him... and not just remain in her own buble of feelings.

also, i think this ep had a new episode director. the scenes and angles were structured so different from usual.. like, all the sky shots and junk, it looked awesome, but it definitly seemed different.. If it wasn't a new guy, then one of the previous ones definitely felt a little experimental <.<. It felt kinda like in Welcome to the NHK when randomly in 1 ep (like ep 19 or something) they use a ton of superflat, and the shading is a lot heavier than it had been, and the ep just had a completely different feel to it..

Despite Sawako herself being so unlikely a character, some things feel really realistic in this show. Like how Kurumi couldn't keep the scheme under control and how she simply stayed there, unable to move anywhere after everything seemed to have gone wrong for her. I'm also getting a feeling Kurumi doesn't have real friends at all. Only superficial ones. It could be a result from being so scheming and only thinking of Kazehaya plus trying to be so sweet, and thus so untrue, in everybody's company.

Pin's attitude was fun this time too.

The rest of the ep was really trying to get tears from us.

I guess that once someone is able to actually interact with Sawako, it doesn't matter if they're friendly or hostile, in the end she'll just have them befriend her.

Other than that, one of Kurumi's profile, where they didn't draw her left eye was pretty awkward

I also wonder if it is a side effect of how she acts. Kurumi is very concerned about her appearance towards others. She creates this whole effect that she is one of those girls with an eternally sunny disposition, who is "friends" with girls and guys alike, helpful towards everyone, etc.

In the end she just isn't very honest. Others might not know it outright, but perhaps on some level, they feel it. Contrasted to her is Sawako, who is very open and brutally honest, to the point of apologizing for things she shouldn't. Kurumi puts appearances before everything. The girls were complaining that she might not suck so bad at soccer if she had bothered to tie her hair up, but leaving it down obviously would make her more attractive. Kurumi probably doesn't open up to anyone, and so her "friendships" are fragile, superficial things. She might be (or at least appear to be) friendly with everyone, but that certainly doesn't mean she has anyone to confide in.

Sawako might actually be one of the first people in a long time that Kurumi could describe, in the right context anyway, as a friend. She admitted earlier that she can't maintain her false front near Sawako, Sawako just pisses her off too much. Sawako is one of the only people Kurumi can really be honest with. She even lied to Chizu and Yano about not caring if they told Kazehaya. Sawako, for being as socially dense as she is, saw through it immediately.

As an aside, there was a flashback of Kurumi and Sawako meeting, showing Sawako's hair down. This one day of the sports festival has gone on for some many more episodes than any other that I was actually starting to forget that Sawako has long hair! It has usually been one or even several days per each episode.

My fantasies got the best of me :p

after re-rewatching it, I just misinterpreted the past tense they use when speaking about how Sawako was already in Love in the classroom when she spoke about her feelings for Kazehaya.

In fact they are only remembering when Sawako first shared her feelings with Yano and Chizu...

I misunderstood that as the first time she told Kazehaya (and the whole classroom) that she loves him... then my fantasies created a story around that.

Nice ep, maybe lacking a tad stress now that the rivalry is clear.

I was sure, from last ep or before that Sawako would be pleased to have someone seeing her as a worthy opponent.

I like Ume now that I know why she was acting that way. Not everyone can be the heroine, or be strong enough to be as honest as Sawako. Indeed, when it comes to her feelings for Kazehaya, Ume does indeed trump every girl out there, including Sawako. It is just unfortunate that such strong feelings along with her other negative experiences caused her to act the way she did.

Of course this does not excuse her actions, but it does make them understandable. It is quite common for a person to hurt other people the same way they are hurt before, mostly in fear of further emotional damage. No one wants to be a loser, and that is what Ume was viewed like (at least the part she overheard) in the past.

I definitely like Ume's bratty, selfish, and sharp personality, maybe even more than Sawako's innocent appeal. Ume's true self is just too cute, mainly because she was probably nice in the first place, but only got twisted as time went on.

Indeed, and well said, but Sawako's honesty is too refreshing to eclipse with Kurumi's brash true self (also refreshing in its own way).

Kurumi tried to be nice and popular with everyone in the past, and she got burned for it. I imagine this could create further strife with Sawako because it is basically the same thing she does now that Kazehaya, Yano and Chizu got her to socialize, and she's moved up several places in such a short time. Most went from Sawako being some evil entity to viewing her as a helpful spirit. Kurumi went the other way, everyone thought she was a scheming evil bitch.

So...she became one.

A bloody awesome episode after last week's wasted recap. It's a small mystery as well how those spooky Sawako scenes aren't getting old at all despite the fact for most of the series we have been seeing her as a pretty bright and genuinely friendly person. Yet the video rental place scene worked exquisitely. Though of course it's partly due to Pin's rather simple nature as well.

Kazehaya also surprised me nicely by actually trying to kiss Sawako after she followed Pin's advice (Pin really did learn something from his "research", it seems). Anybody who didn't foresee it failing is not worth his bytes but it was made all the better because of it. This is, probably, the kind of a show where the relationship will progress step by step in a due order.

I'm having hard time explaining Sawako's nature with her home environment, especially with such a normal mom, but I suppose her dad is just a bit pecualiar explaining something.

There was a line where Sawako was listening to Yano and Chizu talk about how a frilly miniskirt wouldn't look good on Chizu, and Sawako described it as a conversation between maidens (otome). The funny part for me was that there were certainly two otome on that bench, but the conversation wasn't happening between the two of them!

Poor Yano getting slapped like that. She's still so cool. I liked the way her hair looked when they were all shocked by the bandage on her face. It wasn't as poofy as it usually is, it looked sleeker and more mature.

I had a mouth full to discuss on this episode ranging for "awwww" to "yaaay", but then the preview came and surprised all other thoughts out of me. The 2 brother don't look ANYTHING alike!

I'm not the biggest authority on these things but ( see if you can back me up on this Ryll ) the guy on the preview looks exactly like a textbook shoujo bishounen.

If Chizuru ever does choose Ryu over him it will be yet another victory of kimi over traditional shoujo archetypes!

I guess it's a nobrainer that the brother has already someone else, and that's what Ryu finds so hard to tell?

It was quite an interesting episode, and I don't mind the development mainly avoided Swako/Kazehaya this time. Those others are already so established that learning about them is just as interesting.

Ryuu is in a bit of a rut. He can't tell Chizu about his brother because he also has feelings for her, and also cares about her a lot to not want her to get hurt from what he says. Still, if the two meet without Ryuu informing Chizu, Chizu will end up getting hurt even more.

If Chizuru ever does choose Ryu over him it will be yet another victory of kimi over traditional shoujo archetypes! While he does look like the standard bishonen, Chizu ultimately picking Ryu over his brother would be pretty standard as far as shoujo series go. There is always the suave, more attractive male, and the other one the lead eventually goes for who she initially disliked or didn't like as much. The more bishonen one (face it, they're always both bishonen) oftentimes is actually an asshole or has some other flaw.

I guess it's a nobrainer that the brother has already someone else, and that's what Ryu finds so hard to tell? That's not what I had figured. I took it that he didn't want to tell Chizu because she would get all excited. Who would really want to tell someone they like that the person they really like is coming a lot sooner than she thought they would?

I agree with Kraco though. It really seemed like he was going to deliver some bad news to Chizu, and with all the talk about her liking the brother, it is most likely that the brother will get married in the near future.

Ryllharu
Thu, 02-11-2010, 08:05 PM
"Most likely getting married," seems to be a strong assertion for not having even seen the brother outside of the preview for next week. We're not even sure how much older he is, it seems to me that he is only a few years older, college age at most. Certainly more than two, since Chizu mentioned that he hadn't seen her as a high school girl. They're second years, so if she hadn't seen him for a year she would have entered high school right after that. It doesn't seem like it can be too much more than a couple years.

I took Ryu's reaction simply as surprise that his brother is suddenly showing up right after he became a topic again. Chizu realized she wanted him to see her more grown up (and shopping for the miniskirt). Ryu recognized this as her excitement towards seeing his brother again. Then right after he calls. Of course Ryu would be a bit taken aback, he's hoping Chizu forgets about his brother and turns her attention toward him. His brother is showing up right when Chizu is thinking about him the most. That sets off all kinds of 'fateful reunion' flags.

While it isn't uncommon in shoujo for an older love interest to suddenly be engaged upon some manner of reunion, wouldn't it be more likely that he just has a girlfriend and not a fiancée? "Most likely getting married," sounds like a bit of a logical stretch to me.

shinta|hikari
Thu, 02-11-2010, 08:47 PM
A girlfriend then. It is not like I am adamant about him getting married, just that he has a lover or whatever subdivision of that you want to assert. It just seems that the news is big enough, at least based on Ryuu's hesitation, for an engagement to be possible, since that is more final than a girlfriend.

Kraco
Fri, 02-12-2010, 02:14 AM
Yeah. I have hard time imagining how the brother coming home a month earlier would be such bad news for Chizu that Ryu would have so hard time opening his mouth. I guess Ryll's point is that it's bad news for Ryu himself but if you consider the dude, he's not even really believing in his own chances and doesn't look at all like the manipulative type. In fact he looks like the type that if he's really in love with Chizu, he wouldn't likely try to stop her from achieving happiness (like Kurumi for example had done with Kazehaya).

I still can't see, at this point, any other option than that he can't tell Chizu she has no chances with the brother anymore. That would break her heart and hurt her. Telling her the bro is coming early would only cause her a short temporary panic because she doesn't yet look enough like a woman (in her own opinion). But that would soon change to excitement, surely.

I was quite surprised by the reactions of Yano-chin's classmates. She gets slapped by her boyfriend and shows up with a bandage on her face and it's like no big deal. I was expecting more of an uproar over the fact that a guy hit a girl.

Kraco
Mon, 02-15-2010, 02:42 AM
Indeed. But then again, I'm thoroughly brainwashed by the Western idea of only uncivilized and weak men hitting women, so I thought maybe in Japan men hitting women isn't frowned upon so intensively. Many contemporary anime and manga do present it as a bad thing but we all know how truthful an image an average anime gives of the real Japanese society...

Anyway, it was quite a nice episode. It was interesting how Chizu didn't cry at all, as opposed to Yano's expectations. I guess she was still so deep in shock that she simply couldn't cry and afterwards she kind of jumped over it, then.

In any case I feel like it would be about the time to get a bit forward with Sawako and Kazehaya again, with this arc over now and everything.

Yano and Sawako clinging to each other in the hallway before Kazehaya spread his wisdom was so cute. Chizu breaking down into tears had me blinking away some of my own.

I kind of expect this series to have a Kare Kano Ending (all side characters), focusing on side characters rather than Sawako and Kazehaya. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the next arc was a short one about Yano. From the chapters that I read, it was an utterly faithful representation of the manga. The anime is just a direct slice of it.

A peaceful and conclusive episode. Now I feel confident saying that particular arc is over. It might be Chizu and Ryu will never move beyond this point during this series, though. It would make sense considering both the available episodes left and story flow wise. Of course also because it's not like they could keep spending so much time on Chizu. The three remaining episodes will be just enough to make something happen between Sawako and Kazehaya.

Do we have any type of information on how well this is doing with its BD/DVD sales?

Because assuming it's doing well i'd prefer them to remain 100% faithful to the manga an then await for a possible sequel, even if that led to a somewhat lacking ending in terms of closure.

Kraco

Somehow I have a feeling shoujo shows aren't prime material for either DVD/BD sales or sequels. Can't say how faithful they usually are to the source material, though. There haven't even been any news about any sequels to Skip Beat, and that should be big as far as shoujo goes, so I wouldn't hold my breath for Kimi ni Todoke.

Things didn't go very smoothly for Sawako in this episode. Not smoohtly at all. Her dad has some annoying habits, though. I'm not talking about wanting to spend Christmas with their only child, that's more or less given for any decent parent, but how he just waltzed into her room and snatched the cap. I suppose the parents could have had more insight and, knowing their daughter, asked whether she wanted to be with her friends, but in the end this is the very first Christmas when such a (miraculous) thing could have even happened so it's not such a huge failure on their part.

But at least she managed to meet Kazehaya and give him a weird old man gift.

I liked that the scene where they meet and up through put the strap on her new cellphone and when they exchanged numbers was devoid of background music and the latter half of it was almost completely silent. It fit the mood with the snow perfectly.

After all these Chizu episodes I was really missing the Sawako focused ones.

A fine episode indeed. Although the distance between those two is still very long, it seems. Sawako doesn't even know if Kazehaya is even her friend or what. If she had referred to Kazehaya alone in that line, it would have left the door open for wider interpretations (that he's not a friend but a love interest - assuming Sawako could make such a distinction - but since she mentioned Sanada along with Kazehaya, it's kind of harder to see that. Well, unless she simply doesn't consider Sanada her friend and thinks Kazehaya is something else. But it didn't give me that feeling. Anyway, I believed we were past that point a long time ago when she became rivals with Kurumi.

Lastly I have to say she looked very beautiful after Yano and Chizu were finished with her. Kazehaya naturally were too ambarrassed to say anything at all. It felt very natural.

I don't think Chizu and Yano will be hearing very juice stories, though.

I love the amount of screen time that Yano got in this episode. She's part matchmaker old lady, part promiscuous schoogirl, and highly intelligent. They way she effectively twists everyone around Kazehaya and Sawako is one of my favorite parts of the show.

I'm a bit ambivalent towards Sawako's new look. Given her classic styling, I somewhat expected her to be wearing a kimono. It fits, and she looks good (might be better if the bun was on the back of her head imho), but I kinda like her regular look the most.

Another episode I liked a lot, although the objective lack of progress was quite prominent once again. Still, I won't easily get bored of watching that turtle race between Kazehaya and Sawako. It wouldn't be those two if they managed to make more progress or actually say aloud what they are thinking and feeling.

Nevertheless, I'll still be disappointed if they don't even manage to hold hands by the end of the series. A blind man two miles away would see they like each other so it's getting too weird they don't realise it themselves.

heavy and painfully slow. She even got to regress a bit I guess, because she was already aware he's more than a classmate and more than a friend and already shared quality time with him alone.
But I guess it was necessary to start the season this way, to remind people what the show is about. Even though it was ep 0 purpose.

The bitch is back, getting in the way of my adorable Sawako

I usually can't stand slow moving romance stories since it just looks so unreasonable from a viewer's perspective. However, in this case the slow pacing can be attributed to Sawako being socially awkward thus making it more bearable as far as I'm concerned. Not only that but that bitch what's her face is a master manipulator, always knowing what to say and when to say it, so though disappointing i can't say I'm upset with the episode's outcome.

True, Kurumi has always been a schemer, and knows exactly what to say to undermine Sawako because Sawako is so straight-forward about these kinds of things. She says she gave up, but who really knows with her. Sawako is just too shy and adorable.

Fortunately, Sawako also has Yano on her side, who is just as manipulative, but probably a lot meaner (which is why I like her so much).

I certainly never read this far into the series (it is definitely way more enjoyable this way), so I'm definitely wondering what's up with the blond guy. He's pretty sharp, stating that he still likes this newfound personality in Kurumi. I wonder if he gets his eyes on Sawako, that he'll try to take what Kazehaya refuses to claim. More importantly, how he'll do it. I hope he doesn't go with the forceful route though, that's been overdone.
