According to RC:

Comments:
-I just died a little on the inside.
-The one thing I really liked about this was that it was one of the few mangas that could continue to keep me interested without actually having to advance the plot. This ending really came as a kick in the teeth.
-Yes, I know im pulling a Ryll here..

Someone instant messaged me the ANN story yesterday and it killed my mood. I was shocked and angry, because it was so unexpected. I wish they would have warned us a few chapters in advance, but they didn't. I'm going to miss Kotegawa Yui.

I think there was a fair amount of foreshadowing. After all the completely pointless (but funny) chapters recently, they finally started getting back to the serious side of who Rito liked more. You could tell it was finally getting back to the major plotlines.

I of course, will miss Momo the most. She was deliciously evil.

I remember checking out the To LOVE-Ru anime previews a while back. It looked like "Mindless ecchi fix of the season" anime.

Your Thoughts On Ending of To-Love-Ru Manga

Hi Everyone,
Well I'm happy to see the manga ended because i felt for the longest time the story went nowhere. The ending of the manga was a pretty big disappointment as well it never brought any conclusion to the story it's pretty much just saying he going to keep going through the same crazy lifestyle he's already been it. Whoppdi Do. O well it did keep me entertained for a good minute though. If they continue with the anime I hope they deviate from the manga. So who's next up to plate?

This ending sucked hairy balls

For one thing the ending came out of nowhere, i had no idea this was gonna be the last chapter ( missed the ANN announcement and was able to keep depression at bay for a few more days )

And, like so many before him, the author had no balls to give it an actual ending with him choosing one of the girls ( fuck, he didn't even get to choose 2 girls ) but left it so fucking open that he/she can return with as many specials as he/she wants in the future should the money run out from all the orgies and such

In summary, I hated it with a passion

I think you mean, Weekly Shonen Jump told the author to end in within the next four chapters (or even less), so they had no choice but to give it an abrupt, poorly developed and ambigous ending because they didn't have any time.

Pretty much the exact same thing that they did to Yasuhiro Kano twice for Pretty Face (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=633) and Mx0 (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2984). The ending to both of those series is startlingly similar.

If it isn't Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece, WSJ doesn't give a shit who you are. If you're not as popular as those three and can't net them extra income, they'll replace you with absurdly short notice. (A lot like the model of the other WSJ now that they are owned by NewsCorp.)

The series in Jump are ranked every week based on reader's votes. To Love-Ru has been consistently in the bottom end of these rankings recently, so it's not much of a surprise that they got cut.

@Augury:

That's fine that they want to rank them and remove the ones that aren't popular (there is only so much space in the already large magazine), but that doesn't mean that Shueisha should kill series so quickly, at least give them a few months to end it properly.

@Archie:
I believe it is fairly rare for series to switch magazines, much less publishers. Usually that is only when a still-popular series is in a magazine that gets cancelled, as with Claymore.

How about a proper ending through OVA(s) à la kenshin?

Dark Dragon
Fri, 09-11-2009, 04:28 PM
Except the manga has a proper ending even though it was a little rushed, but the OVA was just added on to make more money. The script for the Samurai X: Reflection OVA wasn't even written by Nobuhiro Watsuki (author of the series). He review it but didn't really like it since he believed Kenshin went through too much crap and deserved a happy ending.

As far as To-Love-Ru goes, this series deserve to cut short. I can understand the whole wanting for a series to have some time to develop but this series has absolutely 0 progress so far. Aside from introducing new side characters occasionally, there has been no significant changes in the 160+ chapters. I'd rather have series like these end and leave room for manga that actually has potential to be good.

Archangel
Fri, 09-11-2009, 07:47 PM
I didn't care about that, i just loved how i always had a smile on my face after reading a new chapter

The manga overall wasn't any sort of masterpiece but what it wanted to do it did well, and that was to be a simple and lighthearted romance/harem manga that was meant to entertain and not over think

PS: I also hated the Kenshin OVA, it was like it was made for the sake of those douches who can't stand happy endings because they're expected to happen

And by that logic, Pastel (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=50) is ongoing...why?

TLR was not the greatest series out there, but the art was good, the core characters had potential if the author had stopped introducing more and more pointless side characters and Black Cat cameos, and it was a solid harem premise.

The problem was the number of side characters. When was the last time Lala had a serious arc of her own? While I had no problem with her sisters getting development (huge fan of Momo), it seemed like they forgot about her completely. As an example, Kotegawa was a lovely character, but we all knew she had no chance at all, so they shouldn't have focused on her so much aside from the occasion side-story chapter.

Dark Dragon
Sat, 09-12-2009, 03:03 AM
I'm not too familiar with Japanese magazine publisher but Pastel is published by another company so maybe it has less strict policy concerning performance?

I don't particularly hate to-love-ru, despite what my previous might seem to suggest. It's just that every time i read a chapter, it just feel so frustrating. I feel like the author ran out of idea of what to do with the series and didn't want to go through the trouble of getting another one serialized (this being his first and what not).

Being a fan of Ranma 1/2, i understand the whole light heart entertainment without much need for thinking. But the occasional plot development might have keep more people interested and this series going longer.

Also, Rito is the epitome of worthless main character. He can't even get pass as being "kind" to girls, some development on his character would have been nice. Even Keitaro (Love Hina) get the occasional cool moments and character growth.

well, I've hated her (Momo) with passion, and it looks like the new manga is going to be a lot about her.I've always liked Momo the best in the later chapters of To Love Ru. It is a pleasant change of pace to have a character in a harem who actively goes after the male lead, rather than being yet another cliche tsundere (Kotegawa), stupidly perky and oblivious (Lala), a kuudere (Yami), or woefully gentle and generic (Haruna).

Momo isn't slowly drawn to Rito through his occasional displays of manliness amongst the ecchi clumsiness as the other girls are, she very much wants to take him. Now they've shifted her into wanting to be the secret queen amidst his harem. If the series focuses on her and Yami (the primary obstacle to her plan according to chapter 1 of Darkness) instead of Rito as it did in the first series, it should be an interesting twist on the normal harem genre.

If it sticks to that unorthodox viewpoint, especially from the scheming Momo's point of view, it should make for an interesting and potentially compelling series.

Lol Ryll, and conniving harem hoes are some sort of celestial event that only occurs once every thousand years? I agree that the whole lot of them are a cliché after another and that includes Momo.

Now what MIGHT be somewhat new and fresh about this whole situation is that the author seems to plan to shift the attention from the male and female leads in this spinoff to Yami and the little princesses and i've never personally seen Momo's character type as a protagonist

Lol Ryll, and conniving harem hoes are some sort of celestial event that only occurs once every thousand years? I agree that the whole lot of them are a cliché after another and that includes Momo.
The difference is that Momo is not portrayed as the two more common versions of her character archetype:

a) A villain (Kodachi from Ranma, girl from Bitter Virgin)
b) Comedy relief who always fails (Kurumu/Yukari from R+V)

Momo is fairly successful with her plans by comparison, and while she is certainly one of the most lustful characters in the series, she is not a villain. She's more like Shizuku from the Kämpfer anime. I contest those types of characters are considerably more rare.

Archangel
Wed, 10-06-2010, 04:10 PM
The girl from Bitter Virgin is a what now??! You sure you're not confusing it with some other manga?

I can still come up with some examples such as the blond from maburaho and the purple haired one from Sora no Otoshimono ( yeah i'm amazing with names when anidb is down ) but i will agree that the archetype is both rarer and more enjoyable to watch, especially now where she's apparently going to be given the spotlight

Also since i have your attention, what do you think of Momo's new design? I think it's a tad strange how much she now looks like a short haired Nana

Ryllharu
Wed, 10-06-2010, 04:31 PM
The evil curly-haired girl from Bitter Virgin moron. Kuriko from Maburaho I might give you (though she strikes me more as the failure type because otherwise she'd have what she wants), and Mikako from Sora no Otoshimono isn't even in the main character's harem, she's after the other guy. Poor examples.

Nothing about the design struck me out of the ordinary concerning her design, got any comparison shots?

Lala isn't the main girl anymore

And yeah, she was

Ryllharu
Wed, 11-03-2010, 04:31 PM
Lala was in this chapter, looking particularly fresh sporting a forward-tied hair style. Irresistible!

She's not much of a major character thus far because, frankly, she's a fairly static character and always has been. Nothing really gets her down, and she's too easy going and straightforward in what she wants to get any real growth out of her character. The only place the author could really go with her is maybe make her become more mature (in order to become Galactic Empress at Rito's side), but then she really wouldn't be herself anymore.

That's why I like this direction they are going focusing on Momo and Yami with Rito caught in the middle. Momo has always been ambitious enough and deceptive enough to have some real momentum in character development. The same goes for Yami, figuring out what kind of person she wants to be. Pretty much an Eve 1.5, just like she's always been since her first appearance.

To that end, I greatly enjoyed Yami's comment to Momo that she was at last seeing the "real" Momo. Of all the girl's in Rito's vicinity who can sense killing intent, Yami would be certainly the best at it. Momo really meant it. Momo's goal is a good one too. She devoutly wants Rito to wed her sister and take everyone else in as a concubine. It's the only way that all the girls could be happy.

Nana isn't much different from Lala, though it has shifted to her wanting a bit more carefree and normal life. Since Nana isn't anywhere as naive and innocent as Lala. The rest of the girls never really struck me as need much character development since most of them are rather flat stereotypes. Kotegawa is the tsundere, Haruna is the selfless nice girl and Oshizu (ghost girl) is the klutz. Run was one of the few girls late in the series to get any real development at all during the Kyoko mini-arc.

@Arch: Both the author and artist are male according to manga-updates. Yabuki Kentaro (the artist) is male for sure.

Harem fluff it might be, but it is damn good harem fluff. All the other characters might have been pushed to the sidelines (no problem for me), but Momo versus Mea with Yami caught in the middle has been really entertaining. A lot better than the end of the original series since there is finally a continual plot.

None of the leads this time around are innocent. Momo's plans might be silly now, but once she finds out Mea is working for someone else, it will get very interesting. She'll have to toe the line constantly. She can't alienate her twin by directly assaulting her new friend, that would interfere with her harem plan. Also, Yami isn't going to sit by idly and be toyed with by the other two, she's pretty clever in her own right.

Heh... that felt a bit cheap, to separate them like that, pulled out of the ass of the author, but who cares? If this means more Run in the harem, works for me. No Lala/Haruna is win.

Ryllharu
Sun, 07-10-2011, 04:16 AM
I thought it made sense. Run/Ren's species couldn't have children if they kept switching back and forth all the time, even at monthly intervals like they are supposed to on their homeworld. Along with the explanation of why that is (that the world is extremely arid and harsh) the species is just hedging its bets with each "individual." If the one pair survives to adulthood, they'll separate and become viable for procreation.

Archangel
Sun, 07-10-2011, 05:30 AM
You're both right, it made sense but it still felt forced.

I for one think it's the best solution though, poor Ren had been left ignored for far too long and honestly nobody gave a fuck about that running gag anymore.

Ryllharu
Sun, 07-10-2011, 06:13 AM
I was more replying to the, "pulled out of the ass of the author." It was definitely forced. When was the last time we actually saw Ren for more than two panels in a row? The first or second time he turned into Run?

Though maybe he'll go after Lala now. He is an "adult" now and "all man." As much as I like the focus on the other characters (particularly Momo vs. everyone else), there needs to be some stimulus into giving Lala some actual character development. Otherwise she's little more than a plot device.

RyougaZell
Sun, 07-10-2011, 09:43 AM
The explanation 'does' make sense. Its just that the author took so long to explain this particular quirk about their species that it definitely ends up as a deux ex machina to have them separate.

If they do have Ren actively going for Lala it would be interesting... but if this happens I just hope it wraps up in a single chapter. Even with chapters this long, a month wait is too long to just get Lala. I prefer the 'Momo vs everyone' scenes here in Darkness.

And as much as I want more Run... since she's supposed to be an idol, we won't see much of her until Momo decides to step up her harem plan to the next face. This part of the manga seems to give the focus to one girl at a time. I wonder if we will get Kyouko too in the way.

Lala looks surprisingly hot with those clothes and that hairstyle. If they keep her like that, I want more. She was kinda boring on the original series, but this chapter... wow.

Interesting chapter seeing a bit of each chapter. Even Ren got his own moment. Wasn't expecting a chapter like this. Good read.

Tch... I couldn't help but laugh at the image Mikan imagined. The usage of the tail at that spot was just priceless.

I just can't help but mention each and every time, even if it gets old, how much this manga is better now that Momo is the lead female.

I just can't help but mention each and every time, even if it gets old, how much this manga is better now that Momo is the lead female.I did like how they addressed that weakness of the previous series with the recent chapter though. Lala is just too innocent and kind-hearted for the universe they live in. If Momo's plan works, Lala will be Rito's Queen, but Momo will be the shadow Empress.

I enjoy the Black Cat character cameos in TLR. They're a nice touch for fans of Yabuki's work. Before, we had Train as a mysterious and infamous galactic assassin that has had run-ins with Yami, and now Dr. Tearju as a mother figure to Yami (Eve of course).

More mischief moments for Momo and her master plan (we know where she would want Rito's hands stuck to her...), but now it is clear that Mikan is making moves against her to keep her brother from becoming too perverted. Though Nana is also starting to fall into pace with Momo's master plan.

The hand holding was cute. There was just something about the specific way they were forced to hold hands too, with Rito's hand wrapped around Yami's.

Not that I'm complaining or anything, I'm just curious as to where the line is.

Only bad things can come of Momo taking Risa up on her offer to learn a few things...

And even though her parts are now so small, it was very amusing that Lala fixed her emergency teleport...so it now retains socks. Then again, Momo mentioned directly that she and others have intentionally been keeping Lala out of the nastiness that is galactic politics. It's how Lala can keep her somewhat boring naiveté.

The, "Here eat this melting ice cream!" scene was one thing, but that tail rubbing panel...they're not even trying to use subtlety anymore. I'm impressed that they've still been allowed to get away with it all, but that one, damn.

edit: It is interesting that Momo happily coerces Rito to molest her in his sleep by sneaking into his bed, but she's shy and frightened to do it during the day. She never has problems in her imagination (as the tail rubbing showed). It's nice that her resolve isn't quite as ironclad as she thought. What is making her hesitate? What she's doing to her sister behind her back, shyness from her overwhelmed feelings, or something else?
