Series that I've been reading recently, and it's a fun read. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say it's a combination of Shura no Toki, Baki, and Shigurui. The art is pretty good and clean, and the character expressions can be interesting. There's plenty of action and violence.

I like the main character, who's a happy go lucky type of kid... but it isn't the usual shounen hero talking about justice and crap. He has no problem killing people off if needed be.

I think many of you would like it in some fashion.

"Middle Edo Period -- One state becomes the gathering place for sinful martial artists, who believe in nothing other than power, know of no other way of life other than letting oneself go wild in the battle. That state is the Unabara State, the "Haunt of Demons" . . ."

Washitzu Naosata, the ruler of the powerful state, Unabara, is looking for his successor. He calls upon all his 31 sons, and tells them to search for whoever they believe to be the strongest martial artist of all. Each of their chosen martial artists then are to fight against each other until only one is left standing. Whoever is the winner, whoever has the strongest martial artist in the nation by his side will become his successor . . .

Out in the midst of the mountain is the doujo of the "Daigame Ryuu" (Giant Tortoise Style). There lives Kurogane Gama, the son of the legendary swordsman, Kurogane Jinsuke, who is believed to be able to kill 1000 martial artists in Unabara. There, one of the sons of Washitzu Naosata, Washitzu Naoshi, comes in search of the legendary swordsman, only to find that he had gone missing several years ago. After seeing the battle style of Gama, he instead chooses to ask Gama to come with him. Wanting to become stronger, Gama agrees to his offer, and that marks the beginning of Gama's battle to become the strongest of all . . .

Started reading this too, I love it!

Goofy main character who is actually badass and isn't afraid to kill. A tournament that condones sneak attacks and dirty tricks. Just about the only thing missing is a battle with ninjas.

Chapter 14 is out also...

Glad you're liking it too. But wow, chapter 14 was completely awesome and badass. Might be my favorite chapter so far. Now to see if anyone else picks up the series. But Gama is turning out be a real badass.

Yeah, chapter 14 is definitely awesome.

while I can't say it's my favorite though, seeing Gama slaughter all of these competent fighters with relative ease is great.

My mind is still blown from when he was cutting those arrows in half with perfect precision.

Hmm, cool chapter... this school is full of good fighters. And no chapter next week apparently (this week). Do you guys think that Gama will ever get allies? Or is he going to go on alone like this through the whole tournament?

I'm glad that more characters are being introduced, particularly from the Ogame School. Next chapter the fight against Sakon begins.

Man Gamaran's swords sure are weak... they get destroyed in just about every fight. He's in deep shit without a sword now. How do you think he'll win? Will some of the guys introduced in the earlier chapter come and help? Maybe lend him a sword? Or will he beat these guys unarmed.

What i want to see is Gama win using the broken katana blade.

I also think the 2 older guys from Gama school that showed up a few chapters ago might come help him by throwing him a weapon, but that doesn't seem very Gama like.

The mangaka made a point with the last few chapters that despite being very strong, Gama is still very unpolished.

And of course, how could we have overlooked his extra swords... Next chapter looks promising, though this one was a bit messed up for the kid.

I've been reading this for a while too, didn't know there actually was a thread about it.
I like it and I too would like to see Gama get some allies, sure it's nice to see him wipe out entire schools by himself and all but yea...

Man, 22 was brutal. So it seems like the Ogame dude watching the fight was a previous teacher for Gama. I wonder how many teachers did he have, since I assume his grandfather was also one of them... or was he for the most part this guy's disciple? Though I would think Gama also studied under his father at some point.

I guess I don't understand why the waishen would be that difficult to remove. Small, smooth, and straight... you'd think it would slide right out.

Update
gamaran 136 (http://www.mangareader.net/gamaran/136)

More slicing and dicing.

I read somewhere, that some followers of this manga think Gama is stronger than Kenshin, and there was another guy praising the blind swordsman( that is constantly aided by technology) from Until death do us Part believing he is a greater swordsman.

If there is anyone here that share that opinion, I wholeheartedly believe you all are blind, deaf and dumb. Having read all three manga, I can honestly say that all three are great in their own right but I don't see where they even compare to Kenshin. It might just be inner fanboy talking.

I liked the loaded spear attack as well as Jinsuke's interesting counter. Also, nothing like having someone burst into your "secret hideout" behind enemy lines shouting your name for anyone to hear.

No idea this manga actually had a thread. Its nice to finally see some meaningful action in this manga again. I hope they don't keep focusing in on Gama's incredible growth rate though. That would become really annoying really quickly and this series doesn't need a Goku. I really like Jinsuke thus far. I hope he turns out to be more than the stereotypical egomanical sociopath I thought he was going to be in the beginning

Most definitely your inner fanboy. Personally I found Kenshin quite annoying, Aoshi was the real gem in that series. As far as best swordsmen go, Musashi from Vagabond would have to be it for me. Although nothing beats Ama-Kakeru-Ryu-No-Hirameki , can't believe I still remember that.

Chapter 142 (http://www.mangareader.net/gamaran/142)

Boringly slow levels of progression in this fight. You're in that close... be like Jinsuke and cut off an arm instead of going for the chest.
