The art is awful. This is the first time I've complained about Oda art. Usually it's whimsical and fun, if odd, but every one of the Amazons is awful. They look "the same" in the manga, but somehow not as ugly. I don't think you should animate tall chibi adults.

Anime drawings not done by mangaka? Yes? Its the studio that you should be complaining about?

I don't know, it just freaked me out to see the Amazons move. Every one of them is deformed.

Decent ep, but did they miss to sub a few short phrases here and there?

And Luffys 'narration' at the next ep preview wasnt subbed either, or did MPC mess things up on my side? ;P

Was the royal assistant person there voiced by the same person as Chopper?

Also, I've never liked Oda's character designs, but the amazons are particularly terrible. Half of them look like bobbleheads. And no, it's not the anime's fault, they look like that in the manga too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valleyHow is the uncanny valley applicable here? The amazon characters look completely inhuman, but they still freak you out. Isn't that the opposite of the Uncanny valley?

They're not so inhuman though. They're just freakishly out of proportion.

From that Wikipedia article, "A similar problem exists in realistic 3D computer animation, such as with the films Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within,[3] The Polar Express,[3] and Beowulf.[4]"

Also, the Valley explicitly contains "distorted" representations of humans, like puppets and zombies.

NO can do. You are trying to get the manga readers to ask the question and ultimately... someone will end up posting spoilers...

.... urgh you almost tricked me into saying way too much.

Didnt they say they had eyes on their backs? from that Gorgon thing they killed before?

i had read the page on that uncanny valley and i didnt really ever experince it in any animation or picture or anything.... but that mario picture almost made me sick when i first seen it... not sure why at all though lol.

Then wouldn't Luffy have turned to stone?

Penner
Tue, 08-04-2009, 11:37 AM
Ye i actually wondered why he didnt turn into stone, perhaps they need to do that hand-sign she did when she turned the Navy crew into stone to activate the "skill" or whatever it is.

Or he's just immune because hes rubber (doesnt make much sense at all tho..)

Also, he said he's seen whatever it is on her back before, didnt he?

I'm really curious as to what that might be now -.-

Edit:

Come to think of it, Boa didnt even show the Navy fellas her back and they still turned to stone, so the need to actually see whatever is on her back doesnt seem to be required for the stone transformation to work.

No, actually my objective was to get the anime viewers to ask that question and get discussion rolling on the actual episode as opposed to valley theories and what not

Obviously the gorgon story is a lie to make sure nobody looks at whatever is on their backs.

Whatever it is is probably important, but I couldn't begin to guess what it is.

All I can think about watching that scene is that if that was Sanji instead of Luffy he'd have died of a heart attack already.

And her back probably wouldn't have been the first place he would look at

Mellorine SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

But still this scene compares with the "Pluck the last mushroom between the leg" scene?

Sanji would not have wanted his mushroom plucked... thinking about it... neither does Luffy.

It is a pity that Sanji wasnt the one to have been sent here, *while he couldnt have been mistaken for a woman, less likely.
He could have enjoyed the company of all these Amazon women, minus the Mario looking ones.

Maybe a new female crew member? Seeing how these ladies can all charm snake.. which pirate crew doesnt have a snake charmer or a parrot toting member?

I didn't.

While it would be nice and all if someone like Margaret joined the crew, she'd basically just be another sniper. Then again, it would be nice to have an actually powerful sniper in the crew. Ussopp's attacks rarely ever serve as more than a distraction.

I actually was thinking along the lines of the stronger big wrestlers, in oversized panties.
We dont have a wrestler in the crew yet. This should make sense with all the Foxy team they have been meeting. An unstoppable force from Amazonian island would make sense.

That will get Sanji going Mellorine SSSSS... just kidding probably more like a Zoro type of girl. I believe he likes them strong!

Zoro has shown zero interest in any girl with the sole exception of Smoker's Lieutenant that looked like the long ago deceased daughter of his dojo master. If I recall correctly, Zoro didn't even climb the wall to enjoy the rare fanservice provided by Nami in the bathhouse of Alabasta.

Well, perhaps that would have made it all the more interesting if Zoro had found himself on a women-only island... Though it's not like Luffy would pay extra attention to them either.

Zoro's childhood friend is actually a rival. I would not put that person close to being anything that might result in upgraded fanservice.

The main reason Zoro like his women strong and heavy. (not trying to mess with your brains)

Weight lifting!!!

I just assumed from the start that Boa's powers wouldn't work on Luffy, he seems to be indifferent when it comes to girls, more asexual than anything. Kind of like how Usopp was immune to the negative ghost power.
I have to take a wild guess from the fact that Luffy has seen something he recognizes on Boa's back, and the fact that she looks like him, that she is his mother. Some affair with Dragon many years ago?

You're the second person to say that, but i just can't see the resemblance

Also, doesn't she look kind of young to be his bother?

That said, she would make one hell of a MILF

The fact that the characters don't age on One Piece is one of the few decisions by Oda that i have a problem with

All we'll get is probably a "10 years later" with Luffy as the Pirate King

I wouldnt claim that the characters dont age in the anime.

I went back and watch the series all over again from eps 1 and it has struck me a number of times that the current Luffy does seem to have aged, longer.taller.

I cant say the same for the manga since I didnt really bother going back for those. I usually just play an eps while surfing the net.

Someone actually analyzed the amount of time that has passed in One Piece and concluded that they've been sailing for less than a year.

Archangel

The fact that they don't age has been stated by Oda himself

The fact that they change is either because they became stronger or their design changed a little over the years

I was already getting sick of the "OMG Spoilers!!!111" "It's not a spoiler!" quarrels a year ago. It happens periodically in all the three shounen anime forums we have. The thing is that even if a manga reader posts a minor spoiler, non-manga readers won't necessarily recognize it as a spoiler (unless it's clearly presented as such by the poster's wording). But when some idiot comes and posts publicly: "That's a spoiler! Light the pyres!", then it obviously becomes harmful and nobody will fail to notice it.

The correct way to deal with it is to report the post, preferably with references (that is, evidence if it's a minor spoiler, because at least my spongiform brain may not remember every detail already appeared in the anime).

The last thing I want to see is flaming pit grade fighting over here, people accusing each other of being spoilerers. That has got nothing to do with One Piece or this episode thread.

Kraco
Fri, 08-07-2009, 04:37 PM
The problem is when one does report it and the mods take so long that removing it would be even more harmful, as it would pretty much confirm the veracity of the spoiler

It's not a problem. It's a feature. Theoretically the damage is already done when anime-only person has read the post, whether he knows it or not. In practice, a person will probably forget all about it in a few days or weeks. Unless it's something like Zoro loses his left arm in his next fight against that villain. However, removing it will prevent any latecomers reading it entirely, whether it confirms the spoiler for earlier visitors or not. That's just how it works. The alternative would be to lock the forum, preventing anybody from posting spoilers (or anything else).

To quote somebody from another thread: More faith in the users perhaps?

No more off-topic crap. And no talk about spoilers. Report, case has been studied, and by the lack of action you can conclude that the report was crap. End of story, don't want any more shit on this. Now go back to discussing Episode 411.
