I didn't see a thread for this, and I guess the first episode was this week so:

"To mark the 20th anniversary of the original run, the series will be rebroadcasted and remastered using the latest HD digital technology, with new versions of the opening and ending themes, re-recorded sound, re-edited animation and less episodes. Son Goku's Masako Nozawa will lead the cast of a new voice recording."


So, it's Dragonball Z, digitally remastered and with all the filler staring contests removed?

They are going to stay true to the manga, which means the whole series is going to be 100 episodes. 1 group so far has subbed it, but i didn't like them that much, hope one of the better groups pick it up.

If the entire series is really just 100 episodes (down from what, 200+?), this might be half decent, if just for the nostalgia factor.

I liked the opening and ending songs. We'll see how the fights turn out remastered and hopefully edited down to cut out the episode long charge-ups.

Seconding this. This series has absolutely no appeal to me any more beyond nostalgia. If I can't watch Goku without hearing Sean Schemmel's voice, then I won't watch Goku at all.

Watching subbed DBZ in japanese on the International channel Sundays at 1AM was my very first foray into original audio anime. I thought the Japanese voices sounded remarkably silly compared to their English counterparts but it was still DBZ and so I watched. Considering the dearth of action anime and the high nostalgia factor I plan to stick with this one as long as someone is willing to sub it.

I think what they did with this series is comparable with what Funimation did with DBZ (didn't read anything about the remastering being done in japan). Take the original footage, remaster it for HD, fix some audio stuff, and done.

I was really looking forward to watching the series fully redrawn, but is wasn't so. I don't think I'll be following this series on a weekly basis, but I think I'll watch it when it's done, just to see how the pace would be without the fillers etc.

Just imagine how cool it would be to have the whole series in the graphics shown in the OP and ED...

Apparently, this "remastered" version equal cut all the fillers and stretch the resolution to 1280x720

Yeah that's kinda what 'remastered' means. They took the original 'master' copies of the series in whatever form they were in back in the 80's then transferred those directly into digital format and worked from those copies to produce Dragonball Kai. Things will probably be cut that were included on the masters and obviously they've made it widescreen but I wouldn't expect to see much of anything that isn't on those masters in this rearing including better animation than what was made when the series first aired.

Why? Some people dont like the older fights. Personally, with the exception of the Vegeta vs Goku fight, DBZ fights didnt get really interesting to me until Trunks came along. But thats my opinion.

Bart's voice in the original belongs to a woman too. So is Naruto's.

Anyway, people accept Goku's voice mostly because they started watching from the start, when he was still little and had a girly voice. The voice actor (or actress in this case) never changed, and the Japanese viewers grew to know Nozawa's voice as Goku's. I'm not saying it's better or worse than the English dubs, just that people have different preferences and for me it's the original voices cause that was what I had.

Sub > Dub 99% of the time.

It's the same problem a lot of people had with the Kenshin dub/sub. Kenshin comes off a lot more feminine in the original Japanese track, being voiced by a woman.

For me, DBZ Goku just always had this very assertive, manly voice, and hearing him sound that young is just very very strange. If this was original Dragonball, I doubt I'd have a problem at all. It's just the context.

Haha. Not saying they sucked or anything, but they just aren't as exciting to me as everything that comes afterwards.

As for voices.... I think it just depends on what you got use to. I'm use to Goku's sub voice. It was the same with Kenshin, I saw the show on Toonami first and I got use to his dub voice, then when I went to watch the subs, it took awhile to accept his sub voice.

I gotta say I hate Goku's japanese voice too. It's because he has the exact same voice as an adult that he did when he was a little kid. The voice was fitting when he's like this 8 year old little monkey kid. But to not change that voice AT ALL when he's grown up? It's just kind of stupid.


That said, I never did buy DBZ on DVD, so here's hoping it eventually gets released by Funimation and I'll probably actually buy DBK if it does.

They could have applied whatever extra filters and tweaks they wanted in addition to stretching and cutting things out. Giving the battles a touch up seems like a decent investment given that the animation overall is 30 years old. I wouldn't go so far as to expect it but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the battles scenes look a little more vibrant than we remember.

I think you should watch the movies after you're done with the series, since you could get spoiled of certain techniques and transformations

Also, be sure to get the OVAs since they're especially good ( The story of trunks and chibi-goku )

No, don't skip the movies, some of them are quite good. Movies 6 and 12 are probably my favorites. The only really bad movie in my opinion, was Movie 11.

[NEW] Regarding Kai 17/18 & Naruto 121

Naruto 121 had a broadcasting error. This error made it impossible to cap the show, and of course, with our luck, we're unable to release it unless we have a cap from a different airing, or if we wait for someone to release a rip of the airing later in the week. Obviously, when it comes to transport streams and raws, Taka is fucking cursed. Sorry, guys. Next week will hopefully have no issues. Go blame TV Tokyo.

Now, regarding the release of Kai, the encoder at SD is on vacation, and I'm currently still in too much pain from surgery(I can barely type this news post) to work on it, so it's delayed for a bit, as will Naruto, so stop asking in IRC or even in email about it. Let my ass relax in peace. The other great staffers of Taka and SD are gonna be taking my place for a bit, but they're a bit busy, so just hold up, okay?


I also want to thank everyone for their messages regarding my surgery. It means very much to me and it really helps me to feel better and more motivated to return. Could you post a streaming site with DBK on it? I've looked for one, but haven't found any. (Then again, I rarely stream anime, so I hardly know where to look)
