Back in the 80's I was a big fan of Mazinger Z. Even though the director has stated this project 'doesn't' have anything to do with the 80's series... going as far as saying the "Shin" in the title is the one of "true" instead of "new" I decided to check it out.
Most of the episode was a nostalgic slap, seeing old characters with new animation. Yet... it only left me with a big "WTF happened here" expression.
I didn't understand anything that happened. Nevertheless... Im following this.
From a post on ANN:
A March 4 blog entry from Gakken's Animedia magazine reports that the production staff of the upcoming Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen anime wrote a note to emphasize that the project is a separate work from the Mazinger Z television anime of the 1970s. The Shin Mazinger staff further requested that the magazine not use phrases such as "Mazinger Z remake" or a "new Mazinger Z." (Similar to the 2000 Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo video anime series, the "Shin" in Shin Mazinger's title is the Japanese character that means "true" and not the character that means "new." All of these projects originated from Go Nagai's manga.) In fact, the magazine says that the Shin Mazinger staff asked that the magazine avoid mentioning the old television series to introduce the new series and avoid using the phrase "Mazinger Z" in big letters in article captions and such.
The Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen anime series will premiere in Japan on April 4.
