It's kind of annoying when the anime skimps on the details. I think it puts things in perspective to mention that the slave was actually a captain formerly worth $60M, rather than just some random weakling. After all, Luffy used to be worth less than that!

I think the lost century was the era where the world government became the dominant presence, and also when a more advanced civilization (which left the ponyglyphs) disappeared. This is also the century where Pluton was born.

Basically....it's a big conspiracy that would probably be really bad for the world government if it came to light.
