This anime just started, I don't think any sub version is out.
Just making this thread at the moment because this seems related to two OVAs of some years ago, so I thought some of you might be interested in it before starting this series out. The OVA is Munto and its sequel. I'm pretty sure some here have seen it, I myself haven't. I've heard a decent amount of people enjoying it.
Here's the Exiled-Destiny dvdrip version for those interested:
http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=torrentinfo&tid=46426
Don't have a description for this show, so I'll use Munto's for the moment:
Akuto, the main source of energy is running low and the Heavens, a world of islands, hidden beyond time, floating above ours, has united against the Magical Kingdom whom uses the most energy. To save both the Magical Kingdom and the Heavens and restore the flow of akuto, the Magical King Munto must follow a vision and find the girl Yumemi in the lower world. Yumemi herself is just a normal girl except that she is the only one who can see the islands of the Heavens floating above. When Munto appears before her she starts thinking about hers and others responsibility to the world.

I'm looking forward to it, I never had the chance to see Munto and I always wanted to.
I've heard that the series covers the material that was contained in the OVAs, so there is no need to watch those first. Sora o Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai is a remake and an expansion of the original.

I'm looking forward to this as well. I've heard it's an expansion as well.

So is this officially called Munto, or are people just using that name because the OVA was named Munto?

It is interchangable. Kyoto Animation is reusing the Munto website for the series. Munto is the name of one of the main characters. The official title is Sora o Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai, but no one really wants to advertise that so they just put "Munto TV."
Will Edit when I watch.
EDIT:
That was an incredibly dense first episode as most series go. I actually found it somewhat hard to follow at a few points. The worst in particular was where they showed Yumemi and Ichiko searching for Kazuya while the United Army geezers explained the history of the Heavenly World. The girls' scene was fully developed using expressions only (wonderfully so I might add) while the talk between the geezers kept dividing my attention. I had to go back quite a few times.
I also enjoyed the hypocrisy of the United Army claiming that the Magical Kingdom was clinging to its old ways and wasting the Akuto. The United Army are the ones wasting a ton of Akuto trying to kill another country, only so that they can cling to the remaining energy.
The connection to the current energy crisis, and the actions of my own particular nation are not lost on me... :D
What right does anyone have to kill another group of people only so that they might live a little longer in their own stubborn ways? Munto on the other hand, is risking everything on the small hope that he might save his world. The old geezers are merely trying to kill him off and the rest of the Magical Kingdom so they can cling to their own power and strangle the world with their orders.
The fight were very impressive. I hope to see much more of them.
Though the art is a little simplier for KyoAni, more Lucky Star than AIR/Kanon, they use it in very impressive ways. The reflections were wonderful, the time-space scenes were as well, and the intricate way some of the fighting scenes are animated works very well. They swap the usually mind-blowing visual acuity for vibrant animation. The fight between the sword-girl and Gass was a perfect example.

So is this a remake of a series? Or is it a standalone? The description sounded interesting so I'm downloading it atm.

whoa.. they literally just took the first half of the first OVA, put in an Op and ED, and put it out as the first episode. I thought they were at least going to actually redo it. this isn't a remake, or a sequel. it's just the exact same thing.
but hey, it's a series, so there's gonna be more material than the OVA had. which is good. maybe there'll be a lot of stuff to bridge the 1 year gap between the first OVA and the second..
man, I saw the op, noticed Gass was missing an arm, and so I was like "ahh, so it's a sequel after all". and then I noticed the super short skirts that all the girls were wearing, and I was like "ahh, so they modernized the clothing". but then the actual show started and it was line-for-line, scene-for-scene the exact same thing.
this'll probably make it really awkward when they do put in new material.. because it'll probably be pretty obvious. especially if they change their dresses to short skirts like that O_o.
but hey, I really enjoyed both OVAs, so i don't really mind watching the series even if it is the same.
The worst in particular was where they showed Yumemi and Ichiko searching for Kazuya while the United Army geezers explained the history of the Heavenly World.
ah dude, I know what you mean. when I watched the first ova I was so confused at that point. I thought my a/v was out of sync or something. but the second time around I followed it.

No wonder it seemed like they packed a ton of material into a short time. Thanks for the info Pandadice. Now we'll know what to expect if there is a sudden change in animation.

I thought the character art was rather low quality compared to backdrops and the effects. It was an odd contrast.

Can someone tell me how many different worlds there are, who are a part of each? It was a little hard to follow

From what I understood there's two worlds. An Upper World (Heaven) where there's a source of energy called Akuto apparently. Then there's the Lower World (Earth) where those from Heaven call it the Land of the Dead due to the lack of Akuto.
The United Army and Munto's Kingdom are from Heaven. No idea why the United Army is trying to destroy the Kingdom besides their idea that destroying them would slow the imminent disappearance of Akuto.

I can't say I was sold on this show at all.
Like animus I found the character designs and overall art to be painfully bad this looked like something from 10-20 years ago. The backgrounds looked a little better but when the girls were walking around the city with everything soaked and overly reflective it was pretty distracting. Heck if your telling me that is animation from a year old OAV then there must be something amazing this series has to offer I'm simply not getting because that animation shouldn't be able to sell anyone.
On top of that it was overcomplicated I'm with everyone else in being a bit lost on what was even going on.
Munta at one point jumps down to the "lower world devoid of life". So um where was that are we talking he jumped down to hell from heaven or what? I took it as there are at least 3 worlds involved in this though I could be completely wrong as I still don't know what was actually happening so someone feel free to explain this to me.

Alright, that's what I was thinking. It was just a bit hard to follow, even with them trying to explain it all. Hopefully the next episode is a little better to understand.

We've got "2 universes" Earth and the other one.
This other world is composed of at least 3 areas or groups of floating islands.
Heavens
Magical Kingdom
Outsiders area
Heavens is a group of people that restrained their use of akuto
Magical kingdom is a group of people that never restrained their use of akuto
Akuto is their source of power and life. Akuto seems to be limited. So the spartan way of using Akuto is the only way possible for Heavens. That's why they want to eliminate the Magical Kingdom using too much Akuto. By doing this they both reduce the use of Akuto and the needs for Akuto since there's less people/ground/life forms using it.
Regarding outsiders it's hard to know anything, I gave them some land, but there's no way to tell if I'm right. I'll let it at it, since we know only one of this kind... and he seems pretty powerful.
So that universe is some kind of alternate world, placed in earth's sky, without a very feeble connection. But when something as huge/powerful/important as a pillar falls, even that week connection/interaction creates an effect of big proportions in our reality.
For some reasons, people from earth and those guys fought in the past. I wonder how since those worlds have a clear and strong barrier separating them. Maybe that barrier is a result from that fight. Also, all magic/akuto was taken by those from that other world, so I guess they won somehow, when before that power was equally shared.
Munto, our hero, has seen a future of desolation, with a little bit of hope. Opening the futures for the Oracle probably means opening a future where some of the people of that other world live, have a place. Closed futures is when in fact they all disapear with the akuto being depleted. The one needed to prevent everyone of their kind to disapear is Yumemi, the only one we know from earth, able to see that other world. We don't know why but she's important.
Problem, Munto can't live long outside his universe. He's probably there in a buble from his world. But he can't pierce through the membrane... for now I guess.
For some reason I feel like the solution is that earth was originaly the source for akuto. When the other world won the battle, they only got what was stored. Regardless of the amount, eventually you'll run out of power.
So my guess is that the girl will be able to find where the original source of akuto is and how it is possible to have it provide akuto again. And probably both world will be reunited again and the passage beetween both world will be made possible again.
Is that it?

so they did actually redo the show, but all they changed were really subtle things.

I really enjoyed the conversation between Yumemi and her mother about maturity. There was this really interesting interplay between Yumemi and the situtation with Suzume.
Suzume, who is very childish and dumber than a bag of rocks, possesses this incredible maturity when she's with Kazuya (though the inner tube belies that a little bit). As Kazuya retold the story, there Yumemi almost became a little envious of Suzume. While discussing the hypothetical case with her mother, this compounded the feelings that Yumemi had on the issue. On one hand, she's too young for that kind of responsibility, but she really wants to be.
That played into her shift in opinion about helping Munto. Helping him out, and maybe saving the world would be the same way Yumemi could get to where she thinks Suzume is already headed.

For me the best part of the episode was when Munto was talking high and mighty BS to Yumemi about saving her world as well, and Yumemi actually answered exactly like I was hoping she would but never really dared to believe it could happen:
"How am I supposed to believe a ridiculous story like that?
Look around you!
There's neither destruction nor devastation!"
And Munto couldn't say anything to that, except hollowly repeat his selfish, arrogant, and stupid message. Seriously, the dude is almost as bad as FSN's Gilgamesh.

Watched Episode 4, and it's acutally pretty good. The animations are pretty fluid, and it's so over the top, a bit like Gurren Lagann with the powers. Though it's not stupid ridiculous, but it's fun to watch.

well, i just watched episode 5.
so the first 3 episodes were ova 1, then 4 and 5 are ova 2, and it seems like, unless they really stretch it, about half of ova 6 is going to be the end of ova 2. so after that we should be seeing the new story parts.

Wow I picked this up today and I have to say, this anime is absolutely good and entertaining..
It feels like a mix of DBZ, Gurren Lagann and Oh! My Godess!
I have some problems to follow the story at the moment, because of all the different factions king-gods and what not, but I'm pretty sure that things will clear up a bit more soon...
how many factions are there at the moment?
United Army, Magical Kingdom, 3(? or more?) different Kings and Queens and the Ender faction which left the United Army right?

at one point in ep 4 or 5 (i watched both of those back-to-back so i have a hard time differentiating between them) they go through and talk about like each of the different tribe/king leader people, i think.

holy crap! ep 6 was awesome!
it's so cool to see that they didn't ruin anything with their new content. i wasn't really sure what to expect at first. i didn't know how they were gonna do it. but that was done so well.. it was just amazing.
but dang, lol, yumemi's face changed entirely in the second half. maybe that change could have been a bit more subtle or something...

I didn't even notice an animation change, I was distracted by her one-piece sweaterdress.
That and Ichiko's "a little more than can normally be excused as close friendship" attachment to Yumemi. I liked that the still "amazingly mature when it comes to relationships" Suzume asked Ichiko to let her go.

I can't believe how awesome everyone in this series is, the moves and skills/spells everyone's using are so cool.
and they are all using a different fighting-style.. I love it.
and the explosions and what I'd call "magic circles" are wonderful..
it's enjoying to see these big, black rings comming out of the caster's hand followed by a forceful blast of pure power, that's exactly how I had imagined a fight between casters and magicians
I'm a bit dissapointed about Yumemi's face now, I expected it to get more "modern" (animation style) soon but actually it looks very plain now.. I prefer the old one.
not to mention her hair now ^^
if you watch the preview for the next episode for example you'll see what I mean.
It's really a shame, but you can't have everything... hmmpf
I don't understand why she is the only one looking so artlessly drawn

well, it was a pretty inconclusive ending. I guess the main thing to keep in mind is that the movie coming out should be assumed as a replacement for the respective episodes 10-12, and give the series full closure.
oh, when watching the ep, be sure to watch after the credits.
