Well, I was bored so I started reading this manga and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It reminds me of Keikashi, and I recommend it to people that enjoy shounen type of series. At first it seems dumb, with silly characters and a moron of a main character, but as it goes on it gets much better. Once the conspiracies and "evil organizations" start showing up, the series starts having some promise. I'd say at around chapter 13 is when it gets good. In all it has been quite enjoyable. Nothing great, nothing spectacular, but quite readable if you're looking to get entertained.

Anyone tried the series? There are 36 chapters out and scanlated (they're up to date) and they're releasing weekly, so if you're looking for something to read week to week, you can give this a try.

There's a One Shot that came first:
http://rapidshare.com/files/49029529/Grandchild_of_Nurari_Hyon_boredom_.rar

Here's the series:
http://mangashare.com/manga/Nurarihyon-no-Mago/

Rikuo Nura, a kid that is part human and a quarter youkai (demon), lives in a house full of spirits along with his youkai grandfather. Trying to escape his fate of acting like a demon, he does good deeds in order to avoid becoming one despite his grandfather's wish to succeed him as master of the Nurari youkai clan.

First published as a oneshot in 2007, it later became a series in 2008.

It didn't impress me much for two reasons: The dude lost his memories of the time he kicked ass in the youkai form, and on the other hand I intensely dislike series where the main character has nice powers but doesn't want to use them because he believes that would cause his (loser) "friends" to look oddly at him, and so instead of being a badass mofo he tries to be as boring and ordinary as possible.

Well I'll spoil for you since you won't be reading more...

He does remember. And more and more he starts using his powers in front of friends as the series goes along. But yeah, main character sucks, but his transformation-side is pretty good. With that said, as the series goes along the character starts embrassing his youkai side more. I would've dropped it if this wasn't the case... I was about to do it early on since I didn't like this things either.

But as I said, this is standard shounen, and I can tolerate the things you complain about (which I hate also), but I enjoy the other aspects of it.

This is nothing great, but I think it's entertaining enough if someone likes shounen on a weekly basis. I know it wouldn't impress you much, it shouldn't impress you... I think I said as much in my first post. I don't know what more could've said to lower the expectations. Not going to try to convince you that this is a good series, and won't blame you for not liking it, I just find some entertainment on it, and that's pretty much all there's to it. I think chapter 13 is the turning point of the series, if anyone wants to give this a good chance.

On that regard, that's the main problem with the shounen stuff... they're silly and always is about having the "goody two shoes" main characters. Although some stray from the mold, that's the usual. Better off sticking with seinen.

But on regard of trying to be ordinary, you're right. It's one of the things I dislike more about Superman.

I read the beginning of the series a week ago or so, so I'm not blaming you for trying to induce wrong kind of expectations. But if you say it does get better soon enough, I might still end up having a second look at it. I don't have much else to read right now anyway.

Give it to chapters 13-15, if by then you don't think it's enjoyable enough to read it when you've got nothing else, like you said, then I think you've done due dilligence in trying to like it.

But those chapters are much better than what they showed us in the beginning of the series, I can promise that much. With that said, I doubt he'll ever develop from the "goody two shoes" he's been so far. He might become less naive, but that's about it.

That's true, but I don't mind it... I like it myself. Good thing is that the fights aren't drawn out, and from time to time they use team work. So they aren't always one on one battles like the usual.

went through it all, actually, really nice.

doesn't stagger around, keeps a good pace of development.
the art is a bit messy, but it's nothing an HQ raw can't solve.
and if this ever gets animated, a good director could make miracles out of it (obviously, I'm thinking 100 Stories style of youkai animation)

what, so fast?

I really like the combination of art styles. part of it is very clean and straight cut, while the rest (tamazaki and his sword) are madly detailed and dripping with texture.

at least now we know that there is a true evil manipulating everyone! woo-hoo!.
not really excited, though, I'd much rather have this arc last for another 10-15 chapters just to flesh out Rikudo and his youkai\human conflict (wow, I haven't used the word youkai since Inuyasha ended!)

True about Inuyasha... I think the word youkai will be forever linked to that series, and also true with the art style.

I like the introduction of someone evil manipulating things... it at least gives the story a real enemy, and not some monster of the week type of thing for the whole series.

so, he can handle a sword on his own, now?

I think it's going to be his 'coming of age' arc. he already scared the shit out of two yakuza gangs, got hit on by the victim of the arc, and started slashing away.

also, the description of the jami (evil spirit?) is very down to earth, he's gay and revengeful. that's all there is to it.

not saying otherwise, but still, we're in the exact same spot we were last week (well, we moved like 4 panels forward).

on a different matter of stuff.
do them youkai's grow older? I mean, we know Rikou and Tazmaki are young, and the grandparents are old. but, take gyuuki for example, or Youshizune? they both have a long story about them (the birth of gyuuki, the proverb of Yoshizune), do they age and old? are they part of youkai family lines? same with Aotoba (and his rival from shikou)? they have freakin' legends about them, so what happens once they die?

Munsu
Sat, 04-04-2009, 10:51 AM
Oh, as far as progressing the story... yeah it's on the same spot. But I didn't mind it, thought it was a fun chapter, I blame more the weekly nature of manga and how short chapters are to meet time limits... and that we're up to date with the releases makes us more impatient.

It would piss me off more if it were something like Berserk, where we go months without chapters, then we get a new one and the story doesn't move anywhere. But it's fine once in a while to have chapters like this one in my opinion.

My policy with dealing with stories that has demons, witches, spirts, etc. is to ignore all the "age" crap that they feed us. I don't think I have ever read a story that dealt with this and didn't contradict itself in some form or another. So, I'm going to choose not to have a headache on this one trying to find how things work on this regard.

Everon
Wed, 04-08-2009, 09:30 PM
Chapter 53 is up.

There definitely was a lot of reinforcement that the Nura clan is growing and need to grow, but after the last two chapters, I think it was all well-made filler to space out the introduction of the Onmyouji brother.

I like the pacing so far. The mangaka is slowly showing just how powerful Onmyouji can be. Any shorter and it becomes hard to believe they're a threat to Nura and his gang.

Death BOO Z
Thu, 04-09-2009, 05:27 AM
good chapter.
but wait, she saw an old man jump between the fight of two mega youkais and command respect, and she needs four chapters to understand something's wrong with that?
this ability to ignore the obvious? it's gotta to be love.

I'm also confused as to why they didn't kill Aoboutaru, it seems quite half-assed for them to meet a serious youkai (one who can withstand a few hits from them) and not make sure to kill him. especially after boasting about their conviction to good and how youkai's are absolute black.

well, next chapter, Byakuya and Renji take back Rukia, and Ichigo must to spirit world and save her. don't tell me it's any different.

Everon
Thu, 04-09-2009, 11:28 AM
From the way Aotabou talked and how the Onmyouji brother appeared unharmed later on, neither side pulled out all the stops in this battle. Even if these guys are convicted in fighting youkai, this shows they're cautious as well.

A long, entrenched battle could leave them drained and defenseless against the other youkai prowling the city. They might win the battle, but they'd lose the war.

Upon further reconsideration, I came to a conclusion that this is exactly how I picked on my young brother a few years back (and how my older brother picked on me, more years back).

lies upon lies and abusing the trust of those who look up to you. that's the way a real brother acts.

I'm tempted to say that that chapter was a bit of a disappointment but I can't justify saying it. It'll be interesting to see how things play out from here. I'm sure they intend to let them go since Rikuo really doesn't have any quarrel with them but her brother doesn't seem the type to just walk away from a bunch of youkai no matter how unfavorable the circumstances..

I want to find out more about the relationship between the Nura Clan and the onmyouji. Nurarihyon implied that he may have some sort of understanding with them and Rikuo using and onmyouji blade seems to support that. It'd be an interesting dynamic to add to the series, just as long as it doesn't get too shonenish.

well. that confirms my suspicions, the other guy (mamiru? the one who isn't the brother) is madly strong, and he has powers that surpass what humans could achieve.
the brother (ryuugi?) has kept a part of his shinigami inside Mamiru, because they don't know if he can be trusted.

my guess is that the 'secret' villains who gave takatame the sword (which is an anti-youkai tool) gave mamritu (or implanted in him somehow) a device that lets him manipulate youkai powers, perhaps in order to have him destroy other youkai fractions, and through that, stop the kaien house from developing any other powers that could oppose youkais (why bother trainning someone as weak as Yura when you got someone as strong as Mamiru?).

that aside, the head of the keien acts real tough, if he believes that the nurarihyon is merely frolicking on his backyard. which in turn, means that the fox youkai (who apparently is a girl, and therefore, must join the Nura gang in a few months) is frighteningly strong.

also, this somehow feels like Kenshin.

that's weird, I'm pretty sure my grandmother never ate diseased bodies in order to cure them.

but heck, maybe that proves I'm not a demon, after all.

seriously, this woman and Yusuke's (YYH) grandmother, is having a women eat parts of your body (not a sex pun) really is such a sexy thing in japan?

or is it just to show how the human is more monster than the demon, and thus validating them as a pair of equals.

that point aside, Gyuuki, the brute, the monk, how come they got to keep their young look while everyone else grew old and wrinkled (most noteably, the nuraihiyon)?

As I've said before, when dealing with demons, witches, and crap like that I don't try to analyze people's ages. Somehow or another there's always some inconsistency in just about every story that deals with these kinds of things. I'll save myself a headache.

ok. so now, everybody who lives in that hidden village (who are totally not Ninjas) is stronger than Rikou. considering how all of Rikou's minions also came from this region, wouldn't that mean that they can also 'sever fear', and therefore, are stronger than him?

yes, I know. stop talking about age, it's a wormhole. it still doesn't make sense.

That's what I gathered and found it a bit wierd... hell they even mentioned it in the chapter that the Supreme Comander is always taking their best away or something.

Up to 73 is now out:
http://www.onemanga.com/Nurarihyon_no_Mago/

Don't know how I feel about the battle system of fear yet, but at least they gave it some physical properties (air pressure) and they serve as explanations to the different abilities of the youkai, so I guess it's alright.

As for chapter 73, not much happens but that last page was completely awesome... particularly for a shounen manga.

chapter 70-72: let's see each of the captais bankai! woo hoo!

Chapter 73:it's Emily. and I don't even know why the Emily character is famous, but I know it's an Emily-ripoff. and a boa hanckok type. the battle lasted longer than I thought, I was expecting them to find him K.Oed by O.D. although, I actually liked the fat nerd.

chapter 82. get it where you get your chapters regularly.

wasn't Tsuchigumo a legendary snaky thing whose existence wasn't proven because he runs away so fast?
(like in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow)

No clue, maybe this will help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuchigumo

I figure that it'll be about 3 or 4 more chapters before the Nura clan clashes with this group. Surely there'll be an arrival chapter, a reunion chapter, and then the start of the fights. At least we'll see quite a bit of powerful characters fighting this time around.

83 and 84 are out by ShinraTensei...

Just a pissing contest till they arrive at Kyoto. But, it looks like we'll finally see the Nura clan members fight to their potential.

You still reading? Up to chapter 99 is out at the moment, and things have heated up for some chapters now, though we're in the process of another powerup. Kubinashi is turning to a badass now.

Seems like there's an anime coming this summer, not sure if I had heard it before.

I wonder if he's the strongest one among the youkai serving under Rikuo.

finally, they're addressing the situation of how Rikou got to command far more powerful youkais than himself.

I really should read the entire arc again. but maybe I'll wait until it's over?

so, while I didn't catch up, I finally watched the first episode of the anime...

did anyone else try it?

they switched around some stuff, for the sake of drama, but considering how the emphasis is already going towards the night form, I'm pretty pleased that they hadn't include him in the bulk of the episode.

many familiar voices, of course, and decent animation.
still, looks too much 'plot' directed rather than character focus.
it's like they dropped in on the 3rd episode or something.

ep 2 is out, a horrible mess of unwanted drama and glorifying night rikou...

the absence of the first chapter (bus save from 4 years ago) is hampering the characterization.

meanwhile, at the manga. I've come around to read it again, and it's very enjoyable, Bankais all around.

well, I've been diving into the manga the past month (reading it several times... mostly after watching the anime).
and we're now up to chapter 133...

Liked Rihan's mr.bison outfit. it makes him look like he came out of Hellsing.
the backstory explains why Rikou was born so late after his dad, and why Rihan married such a personality-less woman. though, it raises the question of why he decided to marry after so many years, maybe he somehow gained psychic powers and foresaw his own death?

anyway, I'm bringing this thread back to life.

Dark Dragon
Sun, 11-28-2010, 09:16 PM
I really wonder if Rihan actually fell in love with Rikuo's mom or simply married her out of convenience. At first i thought Gitsune was Rikuo's sister, her being his dad first wife is a pretty nice twist.

At any rate, i wonder what sort of power comes with being the head since Rikuo seems to believe it'll make him stronger. There also the whole thing with the Cyclop in Rikuo house planning some sort of scheme that they never touched upon again after the Tanuki arc. I wonder if he's going to end up betraying them to Seimei.

Death BOO Z
Mon, 11-29-2010, 12:49 AM
I think the cyclops traitor was the same eyeball as the current one, the medous0mething jigsomeone, don't know his name.
as for the leadership of the clan, I don't have a clue.. he'll first need a new spirit sword to fight.
and still, there's the question of why Seimei can't live without rotting apart. didn't they change Kyoto into an eternally dark city just for this?

Dark Dragon
Mon, 11-29-2010, 05:45 AM
Speaking of spirit swords. The Cyclop did manage to recovered that sword the Tanuki used. He didn't seem to be a particularly powerful youkai, and i believe the sword is the only reason he was able to match Rikuo.

I wanted to say the Cyclop and that eyeball youkai are related somehow, but it just seems too obvious a path for the author to take. I don't think he's dead though, probably just out of action for a bit.

Death BOO Z
Mon, 11-29-2010, 10:56 AM
I think you aren't paying enough attention. eyeball cyclops just got killed, after he brought back Seiemei to life. remember how his assistant, Yoshizune (darkness bird ninja girl) helped protect the Kitsune host when Rikou's granddad attacked. maybe she can help Rikou, but I don't see any reason for her to do so. The sword is (Mao's hammer) is now in the Nue's hands, at any matter.

Maybe Rikou wants the title of the clan so he could use his grandfather 'fear' as a 'matoi'? that way he could have double invisibility, and sneak next to Semei and smack the motherfucker up.

Dark Dragon
Mon, 11-29-2010, 01:02 PM
This is what happened when i read manga in chunks. I completely forgot that scene ever happened.

I guess this arc pretty much tied up most of the loose ends then. This pretty much just leaves the final confrontation with Seimei.

As for the situation with Seimei rotting body. I think Grandpa wounding Kitsune and then sealing her might have disrupted the process so his technique is "incomplete". It's possible that the next arc involves Seimei trying a new ritual or spell that will complete his body.

I had suspicions that Rikou could go to Akifuasa for spirit blade help, but damn, the human form doing that was unexpected.

Chapter 135. a low key arc to follow through the time jump.

I like how they care to remind us that despite Rikou being the 'good guy' (and is a good guy on his own), he's also the head of the demon mafia, and they're somewhat crazy menacing.

and there's the ice-cons spirits, for anyone who wondered what happened to Orihime's power.

it's up to 159, after a big arc involving the 2nd nurayihon leader (rikou's father), quite good.
I like the explanation of how Matoi works, it sounds very reasonable.

the dog thing really reminds me of the dog enemies in contra, are they based on the same story?

chapter 191... the gathering... might be towards the final arc.

we have the nura clan, the shikkoku youkais, the kyoto humans and the tokyo humans, some of the Toono ninja youkai.

next week we'll probably get what remains of the kyoto youkai (the snake girl, the giant skeleton), and some time later, Tsuchigumo.

This year's 30th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is announcing on Monday that Hiroshi Shiibashi will run the Aoi Rasen-Jō Saishū Kessen (Aoi Spiral Castle's Final Battle) story arc of his Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan manga in Jump Next! magazine in August. The issue also revealed that a "top secret project" is in the works, with more details to be revealed later.
