Has anyone heard of this? It's an anime made by BONES and was announced at E3 and it is exclusively on PSN only. Episode 1 came out yesterday I believe. Downloading it, probably watch it tomorrow.

Akiyuki, the main character of the animated series, lives on Sentan Island, a land that has preserved its status as a free and peaceful island in a world consumed by fighting between the Northern and Southern Governments. All of this changes when Akiyuki boards a bus along with a mysterious white-haired girl who transforms his arm with the lost memories and power of Xam’d.

As Xam’d, Akiyuki goes on a rampage and is saved when a foreign girl with red hair named "Nakiami calms him down, taking him back to her postal vessel. Akiyuki now must gain control of his powers and use them against the Northern Government’s latest weapons, known as “Humanforms”. Travelling the world on a postal vessel, Akiyuki hopes to return home one day, but until then he befriends other passengers on the boat.
So other than PSN, you can't get it?

...I don't see the point of making this a PSN exclusive... Peoples will just rip it and put it for download on bittorrent. (Which has already been done with the first episode.)

Don't think so... Unless after it's all released on PSN, they release it on TV or something. There are torrents though, but I'm not sure if they are just somebody recording their TV with a camera or not...

I downloaded the torrent.. Video/Audio Quality is bad, but at least, it's not a Dub like I thought it would be. It's Japanese with English subtitle.

Just watched the first episode.

... That was... entertaining? I didn't understand much... but it wasn't bad.
Looking forward to the next episode to actually understand what the hell I just watched.

And hopefully someone will be able to rip this better than the current one... the sound started to get behind the animation after a while. (Or I was just unlucky and downloaded a bad one... I don't know)

Man.... The animation is really nice.

As for the show itself.... It starts off a bit slow like every show usually does, but at the end it got interesting. It actually reminds me a lot of Guyver. Can't wait for next ep.

I wish it was... It's $3.99 for HD version, $2.99 for SD version. Also, it's only up for rental meaning once you buy it and download it, after your first playback, you'll have to rent it again after 24 hours.

It took like 30-40 minutes for me to download the whole file.

I watched the shitty torrent up on tokyotosho. The audio was out of sync and the video/audio quality in general was pretty bad.

But I did enjoy this first episode. I have to say that I wasn't bored at all during this episode. A Bones animation no less.

Superb first episode. It felt almost like an OAV in terms of animation quality. Very intriguing introduction with the mystery and questions raised.

EDIT: Crap, this starts September... I knew I should not have watched the first episode. That just made the wait much longer. Still, it is something to look forward to when CGR2 ends.

It may seem dumb to search for it, but when you have a quick and permanent connection and lots of storage space, it's ok for a try ;)

Anyone know a good program that rips apart and compresses files? Some guys released good video, but the problem is its a .ts (transport stream) file. The bugger is over 2 gigs in size.

I use MeGUI for my x264 encoding. I don't generally deal with TS files so I don't know how to demux them.

As far as encodes go, I had no problem with Effort and Moredouches. There's a little bit more screen tearing with moredouches and the lines are a little less sharp, but its barely noticeable

I'm having trouble with Uncle-fails, but maybe its because this computer is getting old.

You can encode H264 on the HD4800 cards from ATI, but it requires some proprietary software.

Episode 3 was pretty awesome. So Akiyuki turns to stone automatically without the needle in him? The plot's definitely getting interesting, tying in the doctor and the captain fellow with an old military operation.

I just hate the kid.

What kid? The onboard kids? they are so annoying. I remember Renton from eureka also had problems with the ship's kid, then after a while they get along.

So it would seem that choosing akiyuki for the xam is not random. Maybe Akiyuki's father is one of the leading developers of the humanoid weapons I guess..

The action in this series is absolutely awesome. The fight in episode 2, and the aerial battle in episode 3 is nothing less than eye candy. The character development is also paced well, having developed numerous character relationships in the span of only 3 episodes. There is literally no wasted moment in this show.

I hope the captain doesn't abuse Akiyuki too much. From what she said when she shot the enemy out of the sky, it seems she is not too displeased with taking Akiyuki onboard.

Akiyuki is also quite a likable character now, because while he acts as a normal kid would act in that situation (namely confusion, distrust etc), he still managed to realize (relatively quickly, since it all happened in one episode) what he needs to do, which includes thanking Nakiami (who is by the way really hot in the boyish tsundere way) for saving him twice.

It's useful to actually go and find a job, and pretty much any job at that. Working non-stop like that can lead to aspirations, and if not, at least you may find out what you don't want to do.

I was disgusted with how that glasses guy treated Akiyuki. It was obvious that he hated Akiyuki even before he saw the transformed arm, and he has the gall to use it as an excuse to dish out some vengeance because Haru does not give a shit about him.

Was it because of the "betrayal" that Akiyuki started turning into stone?

I can't wait to see the Xam'd senior teaching Akiyuki a few tricks.

Fuurichi didn't hate Akiyuki before he saw the arm and it wasn't some excuse. Something makes him distrust and hate humanforms vehemently. He seemed more frustrated that Akiyuki is all smiles -- maybe he wanted Akiyuki to be more remorseful, for all those who died back at the bus incident?

Hopefully they'll round out Furichi's character a little more and give them some kind of backstory. People don't act that way for no good reason.

Er, I think jealousy is more than enough reason for him. I think you need to rewatch the earlier parts of the episode that go into detail how much of an ass Furuichi is. He obviously disliked Akiyuki since before, which is shown by his comment about how Akiyuki was always "cool" when the three were together (which has nothing to do with him being a humanform).

It may be true that Furuichi hates humanforms unconditionally, but do you really think his decision to point a gun at Akiyuki (who is supposed to be his close friend) and telling Haru to shut up when she defends him does not involve jealousy and frustration from getting ignored by the girl he likes?

Ha, even Raygio's Xam'd was good looking. I get the feeling that he'll mentor Akiyuki and die for him later on. Akiyuki feels guilty for losing the crew's well loved Raygio and goes out to nearly get himself killed, only to find out they value him equally much.

As for Mr Glasses (he's such an asshole, I'm surprised his name slipped my mind), I agree it's jealousy more than anything. At first, he hated all the Humanforms and said they were no longer human, and simply things to be hunted. You could explain that he didn't see the human side of them, while Haru did (Big Xam'd pregnant, Cave Humanform not attacking). He also didn't get to see a human form of either of them.

But Akiyuki was a different case. His mind was clearly human, and he remained physically unchanged for the most part. Yet Akiyuki fueled his jealousy with the supposed reason that his friend ain't human anymore, and needs to be killed.

What ebbed me more was how the Lieutenant told Haru to learn from him.

Wow that was one intense episode with amazing action and good character development in one package. Enemy using nice tactics. Guns jamming. you never know when writers might want to just get rid of one of characters. Nakiami is too kind hearted to the point that she doesn't see any difference between humans and humanforms.

To her there really is none. Both came from humans, and since they can be turned back, she makes every effort to do so. I'm interested in why she's so willing though, if it's not simply her character to do so. It's a shame, but not everybody can be empathetic to strangers like that. Especially adults.

This is a development that had to happen, since Nakiami and Akiyuki will eventually be coupled together before the story ends. They get some time alone together, and the other romantic interest, Haru, will slowly veer to Furuichi. As much as I hate the guy, I do understand how he feels, and by taking Haru away from Akiyuki, Akiyuki will be able to start developing a romantic interest in Nakiami.

This series is great... quite similar to Eureka seveN, and it also has some similarities to Kenran Butou Sai. Both are from BONES.

Don't really know what to say, but looking forward to episode 13 with Akiyuki's return to the Islands. And man, is Furuichi a complete loser or what?

AND OMG!!!!!! Akiyuki vs Furuichi!!! Damn it, I knew I should've stopped at ep 10 or so after marathoning 4-10 tonight. 13 just makes me not want to stop now. I thought maybe perhaps Furuichi would decide to side with Akiyuki, but it makes sense that he would kind of go crazy.

I assume they'll stop him and then Furuichi's perception of Xam'ds/humanforms will change. Either he still has his Xam'd abilities and sides with Akiyuki, or the army captures him and kills him or something. Or maybe they use him as a test subject and make him stronger to go up against Akiyuki. I'm not sure about Haru though. It's either stay with the army and turn against Akiyuki, or run away with him. Regardless, both Furuichi and Haru are in a dilemma.

From what I've read on other boards, they delayed the release so the japanese viewers could catch up, since they started later than us for some reason. Possibly they waited 'till the end of the last season's shows and are showing it on TV instead of the PSN? Anyway they've been getting two episodes a week for the past few weeks, and should be caught up in the next week or two.

This is all second or third hand info so I don't garantee it, but between that and the lawsuits, it's entirely plausible.

Well I've always wondered what they meant when they were going to air it on TV this season. Guess Preacher's info makes sense, though PSN's earlier release did not. If they wanted to reap money from those wanting to get the show a whole season early, it makes no sense to make them wait for the rest.

And David's one is entirely plausible. It's Sony after all. The mastermind behind the infamous CD Rootkit scandal, the the creator of the fishy SecuRom.

I have mixed feelings for that ep, because of Furuichi... his Xam'd transformation is the worst idea ever! it was totally dumb and useless.

Also his suicide, although quite "realistic" in its suddenty, wasn't very fitting for the show.

But it could also be it was a fake, after all a head has quite a lot of matter, so it should have splat quite a bit around him. It didn't, so maybe it was absorbed by his arm... to mimick his death and do something later.
That's true unless he just choped it and throw it away, which was hard to see.

Also, the image shot was clear, and the neck cut was quite green, meaning only his shape ressembles the human he his, reinforcing the idea he's not dead.

Well if he is, who cares? at least we won't get to see another silly transform

I didn't find it silly at all. Xamd has always had such strange cartoon-ish transformations with it bright colours. I personally hope Furuichi succeeded in killing himself because I liked how it was done.

I agree, I was also disappointed to see Furuichi survive. But then the way he killed himself, I thought was well done as well.. When he orders the drinks it shows us that he's completely lost it. Though at first I did think maybe he realized his mistakes, or maybe Haru and Akiyuki were going to meet him there. I'm sure he knew that the army will be running tests on him or kill him sooner or later anyways since he is now a Xam'd. And seeing as how he has such a depressing personality, he probably figured suicide would be the best path to take instead of dealing through the hardships ahead.

Anyone get the feeling that floating balloon is up to something? It just seems strange for it to suddenly appear out of nowhere and start helping Akiyuki.

This show is bumbling between the lines of being genius or boring. I love the setting and characters, but the bits on how this universe works: the history, the creatures, and this war are never fully explained. I keep wondering if I should even bother paying attention to those details. I might be better off focusing on the character interactions.

I was expecting much more from this show but it seems to have stalled recently, with little or no development. What little story progress there is seems to have made the AkiyukiXNakiami pairing impossible... I hate Haru, so needless to say, I am very disappointed.

I think that lack of plot development took flight with these two episodes. This is seriously so much better than Eureka Seven. There are just wonderful characters abound.

I don't think I quite understand, though, where Haru and Akiyuki are trying to go. What is the quickening chamber? And who is the kid the old man is treating like a priest?

There are plenty of question that have been left hanging in the air. Why are they fighting this war? Who are these mail messengers with high grade weaponry? Why does everyone refer to Akiyuki as belonging to Haru? What's her part in this? Why didn't Midori's father simply forbid her from going? What's that bottle that Akiyuki's father was working on? Who's that old lady from the very beginning? Why are they trying to make Xam'ds?

At first I thought this was a brilliant type of storytelling -- have the story play itself out. The details regarding the war, religions, and the character's would be hidden in the episodes. It wanted to be a risky type of narrative that rewarded us for paying attention. Somewhere along the way, they screwed up. There are too many open ends. Too many things that are left unsaid and not spelled out for the audience.

That was best boss fight episode EVER. Finally a final where we don't have hero killing bunch of cannon fodder and conversation between Akiyuki and Emperor weren't cheesy for me. This series raised a bar for me on how should proper plot be like.

Well it's been good and all, though for the last 24 episodes it felt like everything was simply happening. This last ep at least held it together from being 26 episodes of WTF.

So basically...the quickening chamber is the birth place of the the Northern Emperors. The Tessik were the midwifes. On day Sunova helped deliver a dead baby, so all of Tessik were exiled. Meanwhile, the baby was revived with a Hiruko, and lead a life of lost self identify. Sunova seeked to end this by creating Xam'd left and right so one would defeat it.

They still haven't explained everything, and I doubt they will. The above scenario seems decent enough, though not entirely a thrilling plot.

I loved how they took the one-thousand-year wait so lightly. What's the lifespan of these people? I guess that's just their saying of "who knows, wait 1000 years."

The whole Yango's whole character and setting reminded me so much of Yang Guo (楊過) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Return_of_the_Condor_Heroes#Protagonists) every time I saw him interact with Nakiami. With that final scene of him lovesick and waiting for her return, I'm certain they based his whole character design was based on him.

Bones/Aniplex/Sony have kept the animation top notch from start to finish, and I think that in itself deserves credit. As for the plot, they didn't go the way of explaining/exploring every detail before the finale. I found that had both good and bad points.

Good points was that the overall story just flowed. There wasn't any real slowing down for character development's sake (except Akiyuki, but we're looking over his shoulder half the time, so that's part of his story).

Bad point is that some may find it hard to feel "complete" knowing there are things that aren't explained, or not finished up.

In other words, loose ends.

I found that both that and the erratic releases hurt Xam'd a bit. You never really knew where this show was heading, which also killed inter-episodic tension.

I like it though. Funny that despite loading the show with content, I'd still call this a "light" anime.

Finally got to see the final 7 episodes.

Dunno... they seemed a mess to me, despite the great fights and everything. As Bill said... there are too many loose ends. I never got to like Haru and Akiyuki was annoying without Nakiami.

Nakiami looks freaking hot with her hair down. Her character is was got me into seeing this until the end. I was sad to see her sealing herself, sacrificing herself for the world. I kinda wanted her to remain with that boy she picked up, Yango.

Good series overall.
