View Full Version : Whats your favorite old school anime?

Just like the title was, what was your favorite anime growing up? When making this thread i was thinking about setting a timeline like: "the anime must be xx years old" or it must be pre-1990's but after thinking about it this would be biased toward our younger gotwoot members. So I guess any anime would do, just make it old relative to your age and something that you watched a good while ago.
Back on topic:
While thinking about this, thoughts of samurai pizza cats, gundam wing, dragon ballz and even sailor moon popped into my head. I always remembered getting ready to watch some of my favorite animes. The one that stood out as my favorite was macross. I guess watching the new macross brought on feelings of nostalgia which was ultimately the reason why I started this thread.
So lets hear it guys.

Wow, this is a tough one. Dragonball, Sailor Moon and Samurai Pizza Cats were all serious Saturday and Sunday morning mainstays for me. I love Slayers, and thoroughly enjoy Hyper Police still. Then there's some of the Miyazaki films, like Mononoke and Castle in the Sky...
But before I saw Slayers, Hyper Police and Eva, Iria: Zeiram the Animation was the first anime I knew distinctively as "anime."
Iria was also the first anime I ever bought (on VHS, and I still have them) and later I bought the special edition dvds.
Kickass bounty hunter action, a plentiful amount of blood, and a truly unique vision of space and other worlds.

2) KOR
3) Maison Ikkoku
5) Urusei Yatsura
4) Hokuto no Ken
1) Big big fan of Saint Seiya
6) Nadia, the secret of blue water
8) Captain Future
7) Captain Harlock
Captain tsubasa, atakkā yū (responsible for my 15 years of volley-ball)
1 2 and 3 are quite exchangeable.
I had good laughs with ranma, but wasn't pleased with the changing sex main character...
I've seen many more I can't remember very well. and it was 25 years ago and more for some anime... (like Ufo Robot Grendizer or Goldorak for me) but I can't remember them clearly enough to tell I like them. In fact in France we've had quite a lot of anime a long time ago.
Then it stopped drastically due to some censorship, only because some dumb people had a hard time understanding anime has many age categories... and we had kor and hokuto no ken uncensored in the same time slot before they reacted... time slot for children!!!
After that, all anime from japan have been severely censored, regardless of the type.. and many scenes were cut beyond reason. Stories, names, timelines butchered etc...
But I was already caught... then from 15-16 to 27-28 I stopped everything. I wasn't able to stand watching TV... so no anime either.
And then I've been caught again with Initial D streams... started to find some direct downloads for fansubs... and understood what torrents had to offer. And here I am.

If so: Pokemon and Digimon. Seriously, Digimon was a gateway series for me, and Pokemon was great, even though it's gone to shit now.

It can be any anime you saw as a child, just as long as its not something fairly recent.

Uh Macross. Was never into anime much as a kid, but I definitely remember Macross because it was the first real anime I ever saw. I remember stumbling across this anime only channel we had that used to show alot of uncensored anime never used to pay any attention to it until one day one of my cousins told me Macross was on and I just had to see it. There were a few other nameless japanese animes but Macross was definitely what got me into anime.
After that I would have to go with Xan and definitely say Digimon, for some reason I didn't really care for Pokemon, but Digimon was awesome then there was ofcourse Samurai X and one of my all time favorite shows Beast Wars.

Sooo long ago I can barely remember. I think some of the first stuff I watched were Captain Harlock and Macross, beyond that I can't recall. The anime that got me into watching alot of anime was trigun, before that I mostly watched movies Like Lupin the 3rd and Miazaki filma, and stuff like that. Basically whatever looked interesting at the video store, which was mostly anime movies not series.

I never really liked Digimon, but Pokemon was GOLD. Series 1 and the Orange Island series/arcs were the best. The one that came afterwards (Johto?) was pretty alright too, but after that, it was a combination of repetitiveness and me growing out of it. Totoro was a good film, along with Castle in the Sky. There were also a whole heap that I used to watch in Chinese as a kid, but I've forgotten their names now. All except Doraemon and Patlabor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patlabor)

Hmm... Favorite old school anime?
The ones I remember that I liked were;
Animaniacs,
Digimon,
La Bande à Picsou, (Duck Tales)
Inspecteur Gadget, (Inspector Gadget)
Pokémon,
Les Razmokets, (The Rugrats)
Les Schtroumpfs, (The Smurfs)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
and X-Men.
There was also something called "Il Etait une Fois... La Vie", it was quite interesting. Wikipedia tells me the english dub was called "Once Upon a Time... Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Upon_a_Time..._Life)".
All in French~ Since I didn't learn the english language before the year 2000 or so. After that I started watching Dragon Ball and the newest episode of Pokemon/Digimon in English.

(Yes, I am bored)
A little girl with very long pigtails
About 14 years old and quite cute
But when she falls on her little butt
You can bet that she would cry
But one day she met the mysteries
In the freezing night of the universe
She becomes a fighter, yes a heroine
And befriends a wonderful cat
A destiny that she can't quite understand
And she doesn't know how it will turn out
A little girl with very long pigtails
About 14 years old and quite cute
Who now must fight the minions of evil
How will it turn out, how will it turn out?
Only the stars know
How it will turn out, how it will turn out

They were showing that here in Finland as well, with Finnish subtitles. Maybe they got it cheaper from Sweden than straight from Japan... I wasn't a big fan, though.

Ronin Warriors
Thundercats
Dragon Ball Z (subbed on the International Film Channel)
Honorable mention: Digimon and Yugioh
Even knew what I had no idea that anime was different from any other cartoon I still gravitated toward it more than most animation that turned out not to be of anime origins.

He-Man
but there was a "indiana jones" anime too, but I forgot it's name...
All the characters were actually Animals
the main character was a yellow tiger or lion.. with a indiana jones hat + vest.. and they explored tombs and stuffs...
that was really cool!
and there was other stuff like wedding peach which I enjoyed too, because of the "love story"

DBZ was King, without a doubt. Even with really stupid things like Planet Namek taking weeks to blow, it was awesome. Goku was a great main character, as he could be both goofy and serious at the same time. His rivalry with Vegeta was excellent and provided balance to the series. The only thing that started to take the series down was how easily the next generation started to go Super Saiyan, which was a bit crap.
Rurouni Kenshin was also very good, especially the first OVA. The series was set in a different tone but was also good, until they ran out of manga material and came up with their own wacky story lines.
A lot of people say Akira was good but I found that to be crap.

Oh definitely Gundam Wing and Guyver. My dad used to make me watch Guyver with him, it was great and I still remember the live action movies those were awesome. I would watch them again if I could find them.
My mom got me a bunch of He-man stuff, books tapes etc but I wasn't into them then for some reason although I got into them later.

@DB_Hunter
Akira is one of those weird, existentialist movies that allowed for a lot of films like Ghost in the Shell to become popular. I admit that I vaguely understood it the first time but really enjoyed it, had no clue what was going on when I watched it again years later, and when I watched it a third time, didn't really enjoy it much at all. It's a great "film" but I don't think I really enjoy it for the more simple reasons I used to.
I liked the "movies" (usually hacked together OVAs) Sci-fi Channel played on Saturday Mornings like Dominion Tank Police, Project A-Ko, Venus Wars and even Tenchi Muyo in Love a lot more.
...and yes, Iria was one of those.

Akira is as good as any 2 hour movie based on a long, complex book.
That is to say, it's absolute shit. Then I read the manga 2 years later and fell in love with it. When you take a 6 volume long story with great character development and an elaborate plot, then stuff it into a movie keeping only the "cool" parts, you're going to get a mess. I watched the movie a second time after reading the manga and couldn't make it halfway through. The Akira anime would have worked 100 times better as a series, rather than a movie.
The only thing I liked about it was the sound track.
All in French~
Hah, yeah. I wondered why you were listing a bunch of American cartoons until I remembered what "anime" means in French.

OMFG, OUTLAW STAR was the shit for me, including Cowboy Bebop. Akira was bad ass, did not read the manga though. I remember watching Dragonball on a spanish channel alot even though I did not know what they were saying it was cool to watch the action, uhh I was about 7. I think I was like 10 or 12 when I got into outlaw star and cowboy bebop.
Edit (Off Topic) : I remember when I woke up early in the mornings I would watch this show almost like Power Rangers but it was like Medieval, anyone remember that? Also this one other show where he was like a Green Bug morpher from another planet. Lastly I also remember this other show where he like plays the guitar then he summons some sort of Mech or something, no not fooly cooly but almost like power rangers.

Are you sure it was a anime? I remember a medieval show with 4 or 5 knights
the intro song was from the kelly family (I m not too sure about *that* though)
one guy (the red ranger if you want) had a two handed sword and something with fire and dragons
Then there was a black guy in a blue uniform which had a trident and a net and some electicity powers
There was a "thief" or something... with a big chain mace... + earth powers
A girl with a white armor... carrying a crossbow + wind powers.
There was a witch (the arch-enemy) and 2 armies were always fighting each other... One army looked like they were vikings and the other some random-country knights (those were the good ones)
but it was *NOT* power rangers mystic force
edit: Ah here mystic knights (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=o3QW0Op3tFY)
Oh my god I remembered it pretty good... but as I said before, are you sure it was an anime :P?

Gundam Wing was the first anime I really enjoyed that I knew was anime. And it still stands out over other shows that aired around that time like Outlaw Star, because it actually made me think in a way that I couldn't just say, "oh, this is a badass cartoon".
DBZ was badass, but even when i was young i got horribly pissed off at the amount of time dedicated to power-ups and peanut gallery commentary. not to mention when it was aired on the local network (WB11, or WPIX, can't remember what it was called then), they kept getting up to certain dumb points in the Namek arc and then suddenly going back to the Vegeta and Nappa one... God that pissed me off something fierce...
I also enjoyed Sailor Moon for a while, up until Berhle got whacked and they introduced those weird Tree spirit people...
However, the animated work that left me with no sense of shame for enjoying animated medium as a maturing adolescent wasn't an anime. In fact, I can say that this show is the one reason I returned to anime years after it aired. It's, in my opinion, the best American cartoon ever.

Ah man, xD. Looking back, the first thing I can recall as anime, was voltron. I didn't know it as anime back then, but it was the first. However, my favorite from back in the day, was the french dub of Anime Sanjushi, or the french title, Sous le Signe des Mousquetaires. It was an anime about the three musketeers, with some liberties taken. OMG it was so great. There was also a three musketeer show, but this time, it was a world where everyone was a dog. Those two are my top two favorites from way back when, as far as anime is concerned. Oh, here's the ending song to the french dub of Anime Sanjushi, I'll never forget that nugget of inspiration xD: http://www.coucoucircus.org/da/generique.php?id=1103
