Dragon Ball Online (ドラゴンボールオンライン, Doragon Bōru Onrain?, Korean: 드래곤볼 온라인) (officially abbreviated as DBO) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game being developed simultaneously in Japan and South Korea by NTL, set in the Dragon Ball universe, first introduced by the Dragon Ball Japanese manga in 1984.

Dragon Ball Online takes place on Earth, 216 years after the events at the conclusion of the Dragon Ball manga series.

A beta testing of Dragon Ball Online was initially announced to begin in South Korea, during the summer of 2007, though development was delayed by nearly a year, and it is currently scheduled to go live in Korea by the end of 2008, and in Japan in 2009. No North American release has been announced as of yet, though in a press conference held in South Korea on February 14th, 2008, NTL expressed interest in releasing the game to a worldwide audience.

Series creator Akira Toriyama has a great deal of creative control over the project, both contributing to and supervising the story and art design.

What do you guys think? Would you play it if was released worldwide? How much would you be willing to pay monthly? Do you believe it will attract players and even maybe fight world of warcraft for the number one spot?

Personally i would buy it, dragon ball has always been one of my favorite anime since it was the first to introduce me to the genre. I'm not sure how much i would be willing to pay but it wouldn't really be a problem unless it was an obscene amount of money. As for the success it will have, only time will tell i guess.

By the way, if someone could translate this so we could have some more info that would be great: Official Website (http://www.ntl-kk.com/dbo.html)

Looks interesting, and personally I'm looking foward to it. Here's my translation on the linked page:

Dragonball Online

The "Legend" continues
You create the new Dragonball legend

Long long ago, legendary fighters fought countless fiery battles one after another to protect the 7 Dragonballs. Since then, over 200 years have passed.

The year is now "Age 1000". And a new adventure begins!

You are one of the new heroes of the world.

The person who collects all 7 dragonballs will get his wish fulfilled.

The person who competes with the best fighters in the Tenkaichi Budokai and wins will get to compete and overtake the "Legendary Fighters".

Come! Join in the adventure within the new Dragonball World!

Gather your comrades here!

If Blizz didn't make it, I doubt it will rival WoW in terms of sheer fanbase. I don't think it'll even come close. As for playing it, I suppose I wouldn't mind a trial. For how much to pay, I suppose if it wanted to contend with WoW, somewhere in the $25/mo. range would be good.

hmm...i can already see a million retarded dragonball fanboys with 'goku' in thier name...once thing i dont like, this game will also cater to a much younger audience...like 7-15, which will result in a shitload of noob-dom

I can't really see how this is going to be good. To me, dragon ball has always been about action, fast paced, and brutal. If you go ahead and "rpg" it, you're essentially getting rid of that element. I don't recall enjoying the dbz rpgs that came out for the snes and the various gameboy platforms. If they manage to somehow make this a compelling game, it'll be the most impressive game development feat I've ever witnessed.

I think the number of people with "ssj" as a prefix to their name will far outnumber those with "goku" in their name.

This sounds kinda cool though. I didn't like the sound of it at first, but I might could be persuaded.

It's cool that Akira Toriyama is doing the character designs, but the guy really only has about 7 variations of characters in him. Let's hope the game isn't filled with several hundred Bulma-with-purple hair, Gohan-with-a-headband, and fat-orange-Piccolos.

Looks pretty cool. Depending on how fun it is and how much it costs (if at all if they follow the GuildWars method), it could turn out to be a pretty good game. I like the idea of a Gotwoot Guild.

This has been in development for so long, honestly I don't think they'll ever release it.

Well unfortunatly that's not something you'll have to worry about since it will probably be a long time till we can get our hands on this. When it's done it will probably have loads of different characters, and then there will be the expansions ofc

There's no guarantee. It'll probably be like WoW, with a certain amount of color, style, class, and race options. This means that there will be a definite amount of options (however many there are) to choose from. That means that people will probably come up with the same design. This means that, like Xan said, there will mostly be a certain few character designs. And since everybody always wants to be that one character, it'll end up being the characters from the show. Very unfortunate, but with a property like that, it's hard to avoid, no matter HOW many options there are to choose from.

Or, they could do the smart thing and copy CoX as much as possible.

Especially if you can customize your energy attacks shape, pattern, color, intensity, fluctuations.

Sinces it all rendered client side, if you recieved a simple packet of

Color, shape, brightness, pulse

It would take almost no additional bandwith.

My point was that Toriyama's character designs are already pretty much a mix-and-match of his previous designs, so there won't be much variability in what the characters will look like.

It'll almost be like choosing a "race" in other MMORPG's. You'll choose a body (either one of his 6 or so male character designs or one of his 3 females), and after that it's just hair/eye color and clothes and stuff.

I'm not criticizing. That was just my initial reaction to the news that he's been working on the designs.

OMG Awsome :D

The scenarios look so colorfull, just like in the anime or maybe even better. The character designs look good too and it looks like we'll be able to relive some classic DBZ moments via time machine/dungeon just like in wow's cavern of time. I'm so gonna buy this game!

Bum - Got some info

Recently, Toriyama and his studio have begun developing Dragon Ball Online, an MMORPG follow-up to the Dragon Ball manga, with Bandai Namco Games and NTL for release in South Korea and Japan. The game will act as a direct sequel to the manga, and Toriyama will be supervising all aspects of the game, from storyline and setting to character and location designs. In a press conference in South Korea on February 14th, 2008, Kazuhiko Torishima, the director of Shueisha (and Toriyama's original editor), stated that Toriyama had immersed himself in creating character designs and providing editorial supervision for the game for the past five years

Update

Apparently Closed Beta has begun as of April 2009

Open beta should start somewhere between July and September of this year and the full game will be released still this year

The korean fans are calling it "a masterpiece of gaming" but i'd like to try this hands on instead of relying on the opinions of probable fanboys lol

well, that was a pretty video.
but then I went on youtube to watch some clips, and I almost fell asleep. it was so boring.
sure, I know nothing about other MMOs, but it looked like people just walking around and targeting rocks, no strategy or anything.
and then I looked at their (somewhat official) wiki page, which was nearly empty, and to make everything worse, it's all written in korean.

and why the hell can the human martial artist transform into a Super Saiyan? that's just dumb.

Who said he was human?

I don't really dig the game, but seeing the trailer, I kinda wish they'd make a sequel to DBZ with entirely new characters and story, using the original as only a legend.

The takedown-beam was sick.

It seems that all "humans" in DBO have a trace of saiyan blood in them.

You have to put things in perspective, and for a korean mmorpg there's quite a bit of strategy involved not only in PvE but in PvP when you include those special beat em up moves they added, the throwbacks, the transformations, etc.

Also more than anything this was a game written by Akira, this IS the official sequel to Dragon Ball Z so if not for the game we should all enjoy it by the story

Dragonball Online : Age 1000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlCWRALAbo8) Time Quest missions are gonna be great too :D
