Itazura na Kiss (イタズラなKiss, Mischievous Kiss?) is the popular, unfinished manga series by mangaka Kaoru Tada. Itazura na Kiss began to be serialized and published in 1991 by Shueisha through Margaret Magazine. It became successful very quickly and became the manga series that Tada became known for in Japan[citation needed]. The manga became so popular that two live TV series have been made so far in 1996 and 2005, with a sequel of the 2005 drama set be aired in late 2007. Despite the success of the manga series, the manga series was never completed due to the unexpected death of the author in a house accident while she was moving to another house with her husband and son. However the manga series continues to be published with the permission of the late artist's husband.

I was a fan of the manga, and I was happy to see the dated art style adequately represented here. It's 1990's animation done in 2008 (doesn't make sense, but it's true). They stick to the shoujo style of the early 90s, but the character designs, particularly the eyes and Kotoko's hair (though not anyone else's....), are a little more polished and expressive.

The cast is great too. I've heard some rumblings of Mizuki Nana not fitting the heroine, but I thought she was great. I suspect people just got used to her playing strong and boyish characters (like Touma in Minami-ke, Fate from Nanoha, and Misaki from Darker than Black) but this role is good for her. Just in the first episode, we get to see that Kotoko is not totally like the stereotype shoujo character. She's really girly...until she gets rejected. Then she's a little snappier. Okay...she's exactly like a cookie-cutter shoujo lead, but she does the job very well. Sweet some of the time, mean the rest. A nice split between her usual character types. A little like Riful from Claymore.

Then we've got Daisuke Hirakawa. Who better to play an asshole character than the VA of Makoto from School Days? Luckily, he's not nearly as whiny as he was in School Days, so I think he'll do really well.

Other than that, I don't really remember anything from the manga that wasn't covered in this episode, so I'm eager to see how they finally end this series.

More neo-Classical romance anime:
[BakaWolf-m.3.3.w] Itazura na Kiss 02 (H.264) (http://tracker.anirena.com/download2.php?id=5716)

I have to admit, I really do enjoy the classics. No matter how simple and shallow they are. The overbearing mother (who's VA does a perfect job at sounding exactly like 90% of the mother characters from the 1990s) on through the idiot friends. Mizuki Nana and Daisuke Hirakawa do an even better job than the last episode. She had me laughing, and his character is in no way whiny enough to remind me of Makoto, so there's no break in the immersion into this series over that one.

I'm going to completely avoid re-reading what's been scanned of the manga so I can enjoy the anime more.

I hope I won't be the only one watching this. Where's the rest of the drama-filled romance series watching crowd?

Three screenshots I borrowed from the excellent folks at RandomC:
http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/3411/itazura1ajc9.th.jpg (http://img364.imageshack.us/my.php?image=itazura1ajc9.jpg) http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/5837/itazura1bfh0.th.jpg (http://img364.imageshack.us/my.php?image=itazura1bfh0.jpg) http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/5161/itazura1cic9.th.jpg (http://img364.imageshack.us/my.php?image=itazura1cic9.jpg)

The main characters will be animated better than the rest for the majority of the series, particularly Kotoko (she gets the 2008 upgrade the most). Simplified mouths, reaction shots tend to be more stills like the third shot, and those are usually reserved for humorous spots. Less frequent smooth and flowing animation when it is not needed (this will not look like True Tears for example). I'm sure this one is done on a computer, but it is animated like it was hand-drawn. Don't expect any motion capture scenes either. Soft animation and backgrounds like Honey and Clover.

As for the plot of what I remember, it's a romance series. *shrug*

From the beginning, you've got a clear idea where the series is aiming to go, but there's going to be tons of problems along the way. If you've ever seen Kare Kano (aka His and Her Circumstances) this will be a lot like that, or Hana Yori Dango if you've seen/read that. Itazura na Kiss should have lower focus on side characters, and there are fewer of them. Kare Kano suffered from the second half of the series covering the side stories of the large cast of side characters and the anime never got to cover the material past those volumes of the manga.

--------------------------
As for my new avatar, thanks for noticing. The color switch (from very dark to very light) is probably what comes off the strangest compared to my old one.

This show is a bit better than the Chinese L-A, and more entertaining and funny. Yaay! I sorta sopped because I got bored though, but I don't think I will get bored of this series as easily. I hope I enjoy it!

I wonder if anyone else is still watching this fast-paced romance series. Pretty unusual to see the two main characters start in high school and be college freshmen by episode 8. It is likely to be a 26 episode series, so we may see a lot of progression in their relationship.

As for Episode 7, it was a bit lackluster for the most part, but Mizuki Nana's evil voice as she revealed the picture of Irie dressed as a little girl was very amusing. This series really lets her use the majority of her range, drifting from stupid and cute to cold and mean.

I'm still watching. It's turning out to be a decent series. You don't see the retro style animation nowadays.

Im also watching, def one of my favorite shows of this season.
at first i thought it was boring to watch a series where a girl is going after a boy, instead of the other way round, but...its really nice.

MFauli, as the Recommendation Fiend, I suggest you take a look at Tenshi na Konamaiki, similar art style to the intentionally dated look of Itazura na Kiss (both are based off old manga series).

...maybe you will feel better.

By the way:
Itazura na Kiss eps 13 [h264] (http://tracker.anirena.com/download.php?id=9399)
and the low performance version (http://tracker.anirena.com/download.php?id=9399)

...the final episode:
Itazura na Kiss 14 (h264) (http://tracker.anirena.com/download.php?id=9836)

...well, not quite.

This was part of the appeal for Itazura na Kiss back when it was a manga (before the tragic death of the author). Where most series end, Itazura na Kiss continues.

[Episodic content follows below]

As for the episode itself, it should come as no shock that Chris really liked Kinnosuke. She would glance at him all the time, but her line accusing Kotoko of having horrible taste in men was pretty funny. I'm still surprised at how well Yuko Goto can bastardize Japanese into sounding like a native English speaker murdering the language.

...and Kotoko looked very nice at the end of the episode.

Ep15 is out, torrents not working.

I dling the via cirect download provided on their forum page here:

Be aware that if it's not available, it's probably due to some problems in either the sub or technical matters.

Have fun

Edit: the ep looked fine. Maybe they should subtitle the english parts too... but that was fine.

Torrents are working now it seems:

I've been watching it, I just don't think there's really all that much to discuss about it.

Kotoko is a moron, but cute. Irie...er Naoki is still a bit of an asshole (though he's just teasing her now), Kin-chan is still annoying, and Christine's determination is admirable. Pretty much the same comment each episode, alternating the last character with either a hostile one or a friendly.

There's the idea that the 2 main characters have sex  how's that possible in your average romantic school life anime? Well that one was pretty much at the border of adulthood from the start.
Living with your parents after wedding: now way. All they want is the baby, that ep is a proof.
I don't like Chris for the way she's drawn and the voice acting.

New characters are introduced in this episode.I laughed a lot while watching this. I thought I was not gonna see the 2 characters from their highschool tennis club but its good that they made an appearance here just to tell us where they are now. Although its kind of a letdown Irie's mother did not make a scene (just a few and its not even funny)..she always cracks me up. Maybe when she knows that there are new girls attacking Irie we'll see her assisting Kotoko again in the most hilarious way possible...

I don't like Chris for the way she's drawn and the voice acting.
Yuko Goto's voicing of Chris is perfect. Can you imagine how hard it must be to absolutely murder Japanese pronounciation in that kind of cutesy voice? Then compounding it by pretending to use a Kansai accent. That's would be like faking a thick New England accent and trying to sound like an 12 year old, when you're actually Australian.

As for eps 17, even though it was really cliche, I also laughed a lot at the, "She [Matsumoto] must be Irie's wife, it has to be someone incredibly smart and talented and beautiful!" while Kotoko was right there with them, stalking her own husband.

At least now we'll finally see what happens when Naoki gets the same treatment that Kotoko always got when she was trying to get him.

I don't know how many of you guys are still watching.

For once, we have a show that goes past the first love feeling and goes to the living with the one I love.
Also the age is a little bit higher.

Sure the scenari aren't top notch, but it remains quite watchable.
Also I like the op song quite a lot and don't know why because there isn"t anything special to it, except I like it.

The higher age of the protagonists and the shift to romances during college/career is a little more common in manga. Those are the kind of series that just don't get animated (target audiences of most anime is usually high school age). A 4 year time jump was a lot more than I expected though. I was thinking a few months or maybe a single year, like we saw during their high school and college years.

I bet Kinnosuke and Chris have 2 kids by now. Irie's mother must be pissed!

The scenarios were not quite as cliche back in 1990 when the series first started, but that's part of the reason I like the series so much. It's a huge throwback from series that are always about moe, ecchi, or excessive quantities of stereotype bishonen.

As soon as they revealed it was Non-chan, I skimmed the rest of the episode. I hated the last episode he was in, and as soon as they pulled the "such a nice kid turned into such an asshole" angle, I just jumped through it. He was such a boring character then, and he is again here.

I've read way too much shoujo manga to want to see that plot device again. It's in practically every other series I've read. Though usually it takes place over an entire series.

The next episode looks good though. Maybe we'll see a responsible side to Nurse Kotoko?

Another strange procedure @ the hospital.
If a new surgeon is the only one present for an emergency operation, they should be greened by a senior surgeon, even if he/she is already on an important op.
I don't know how it works in Japan, but I don't think those responsibilities are those of a chief nurse.

AniDB lists 25 total, and it seems like the next episode is the final one. The fall season begins in two weeks.

A nice "ending" to this series. Reminds me a little of Ai Baby, with the whole family living in one house.
