That African Honey Bee was created from a scientist!! I swear, one day a scientist is going to create the wrong bug and we're gonna have to go to war like Starship Troopers.

Fuck the war on terror, we need a full mobilization over these freaks. If only we could get them to battle each other to the death. It would be epic.

P.S. The 30 Japanese Giant Hornets battling the 30,000 regular bees reminded me of the Battle of Thermopylae in "300".

The hornets vs bees is a lot better when it's the Japanese bees. They can, after all, fight back unlike those European ones. It's pretty nice to watch how they flock layer upon layer on top of a hornet and produce so much heat the hornet will die of a heat stroke.

The bot fly and the Army ant didn't seem to scary to me.

That Japanese Hornet is just unreal. I can't believe they actually tear apart the other bees. I almost felt sick with dread watching that.

Also, I know they're not dangerous, but I really hate cockroaches. I could barely even look at the google image search results: because seriously (http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/1575/cockroachad2.jpg). Disgusting.

Edit: The list also needs the Camel Spider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solifugae). It's five inches long and runs 10 miles per hour through the desert. There are also stories (possibly false) of them jumping through the air and attacking camels.

Oh yeah, this thread would also be a good place to mention the Giant Isopod. These things are usually a little over a centimeter long, but thanks to Deep-sea Gigantism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep-sea_gigantism) they can grow as large as a person's hand. There's something really unsettling about that.

I find those giant isopod things funny for some reason :p
Now Giant centipedes, on the other hand, have to be the most badass yet scary bugs i know.

Those things are huge!

During my last work term (Sept-Dec), there were these "house centipede" things in my room that crawl really fast. They're a grayish-brown color and about the length of of a small paper clip. It's really hard to see them when they're on the carpet because the color blends in like camouflage. I only saw them when they run around, and trust me they run extremely fast. Sometimes it looks like a little dust ball blowing across the floor, but it's actually one of those bugs.

Very creepy. I didn't sleep well those four months.

Yeah, i've had run-ins with those things too while visiting relatives, and now I finally know what they are :p. Maybe I wont kill them anymore now that I know that they cant sting me and that they kill pests..... maybe

20 times of that initiation ceremony? I'm surprised they can still use their hands after that.... Anyway, thanks for the nice read.

And this is exactly the reason why they are still an archaic tribe while the rest of the world has intarwebs.

There are also stories (possibly false) of them jumping through the air and attacking camels.Camel spiders don't compare to these 5 on the list, since really all they can do is bite you, not burrow under your skin or strip the flesh from your bones. They bite hard, but don't produce venom, so really it's like a small dog bite. We have them here, and people catch them and make them fight, like Michael Vick, but with big hairy spiders. I think they don't attack camels but instead actually live in symbiosis on a camel's body, hence their name.

Army ants aren't that scary until you remember that they move and attack in groups of 1 million or more, and can strip a cow to it's bones surprisingly quickly.

One cow= 1000 kg roughly or 1 000 000 g

Each of these ants are able to take far more than 1 g (6 at least, and since they are incredibly big, maybe a little more)

1 million attacking, this explains because it's fast.
In fact it could be faster if the attack surface of the cow was bigger.
For sure, it must be a very terrifiying scene to watch. I wonder if it's gore, since the poor thing is probably entirely covered with ants and you don't get to see it under that "matress"

But in the end you probably get dry bones, since everything wet and fleshy would be taken away. I wonder what happens with stomach juices, probably a bit too acid, so maybe you'd have some guts.

Thanks for the graphic recount, David. Hopefully this persuades Xan to the badassness of the army ant. Hopefully he's not confusing army ants with the US Army, but then I could understand the lack of awe.

Maybe the mother fly planted the egg when the person was a newborn. Newborns don't really have much skull in that area.

Either that or it was just a nasty prank.

I'm guessing they probably burrow into the brain from somewhere else in the body, like from the neck.

I'm still not convinced on the Army Ants. Maybe if they were like the Scarabs in The Mummy it'd be a little more freaky, but it's probably very easy to just...step out of their way. I dunno.

However it got in, it ate right through half the frontal association area. If he/she didn't die a painful death, they lived a life with thinking problems.

Thank god for our natural barrier. It's arguably the best.

I think you just need to see them in action or see their aftermath, that will quickly change your mind.

I think the least scary one of the 5 would be the bullet ant. The fact that you know a tribe somewhere out there uses these ants as a ceremony into manhood, it takes away a lot of the scary factor of the bullet ant. From the looks of it, you don't die from their stings. It just hurts like a mofo, but you don't die, and you don't get poisoned or anything. I'll still be scared to see one though.

On a side note... I'm more scared of spiders.

^^^^ Dude seriously, freakin' spiders

Ok, so I looked and here's a guy sticking his finger into a stream of them. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRI6bt5-cdU&NR=1)

I'm not trying to invalidate how cool it is that they can tear down pretty much anything due to their numbers, but they don't seem like a legitimate threat to humans. Nor are they disgusting, which is a pretty big factor in my book.

Edit: And here they are attacking a Daddy-Long-Legs, which eventually escapes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWWuq4Mm-Gg&NR=1)

Also: lol, The aftermath of the first video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8xftzpLsvU&feature=related)

Sometimes it's better to just die than to endure the pain. That's the basis behind torture.

I get what you mean the ability to escape plays a huge part in the scare factor but piranha aren't scary if you can get out of the water.

That's a good point about being able to get out of their way. I really hate flying insects for the reason they can rapidly pursue you. Flying cockroaches are the worse, because they are so random in their flight pattern.

@Idealistic: the thing about ants is that they often creep up on you. So when that bullet ant bites you and it hurts that bad and you aren't expecting it, it's scarier.

I've got stung by hornets 3 times before, once on the thigh and twice to the back of the head. It hurt like hell, but I still had to carry on with the training. Took 2 days for the pain to wear off, and whenever I see those things I would run as fast as I can to get away.... Smoke grenades are useless. :(

since insects are arthropoda/subphylum insect..

and there are honestly worst insects then army ant and giant hornets. bullet ants are pretty bad sting like a mother fucker.. army ants are only bad in numbers same with africanized bees.

bot flys are pretty disgusting.

I knew that. I posted it anyway because it's interesting.

It's not even that large when compared with other deep-sea crustaceans, but the fact that it's shallow-water brothers are 1 centimeter long is just way creepy. It should not be that large.

Same goes for that centipede. That video made the back of my neck tingle.
