First episode released by Triad:
http://a.scarywater.net/triad/%5BTriad%5D_Kaiji_-_01.mkv.torrent

Don't know what it is, looking for info on it right now. From what I've read around it has to do with compulsive gambler.

It's from the same mangaka of Akagi.

Itou Kaiji is a bum who steals car emblems and slashes tires on what seems to be a regular basis. This routine changes one day when he is paid a visit by a man in a trench-coat. Once the two get talking, it seems that the visitor (Calling himself Endou) is a debt collector. The reason for his visit is an unpaid loan which kaiji had previously co-signed for a work-mate (Furuhata Takeshi). The original loan was 30000 yen and once Takeshi had disappeared, the loan then fell on Kaiji.

Kaiji is then told of a way to clear the interest compounded debt (which stood at 3,850,000 yen), which involved getting on a boat with others in his position. Once on the boat the debtors would then have to gamble with loaned money, which would end with a few winning, and others getting into deeper debt and having to work to pay of their debts. After some coercing kaiji accepts a position on the boat, in order to clear himself and make a bit of money as well...

Yeah the art is so unique it's kinda obvious. Triad's website says it's like Akagi, without the Mahjong and the main character's not a badass. I'll give it a try.

Edit: Watched the first episode, and it looks to be really interesting. I'm a fan of his art, it just feels so unique and a sense of sublime or mystery.

Just watched the first episode, and it's very interesting so far. Basically this bum that's full of debt it's given a chance to get on a cruise were he'll play to try and rid himself from all his debt. Of course, this is no normal cruise and that's were the fun starts.

i'll stick with this. I was wondering what kind of gambling games they would do, because there aren't alot of anime viewers who would know all the different types of games... So I wasn't too surprised when then game showed up as a very simple, albeit modified, one.

There's no way they just send them to one or two years of hard labor if they borrow that kind of money...

I like the yakuza in this show; ruthless and cunning. I also like that Kaiji is pretty much a regular guy. The art style doesn't bother me, although sometimes i just have to laugh at a person's nose... And, yeah, didn't look to be any females on the ship at all. Sausagefest anime.... well, that's what the scene around gambling usually is... especially when it's a rabble like this...

Good episode. That scam was really obvious, I'd feel quite bad about falling for that too. And I love the soundtrack already. I was hoping it would be as good a soundtrack as Akagi had.

And Akagi is awesome. Getting kinda repetitive after the first half though. And the distinct lack of females is kinda of a disappointment.

I, too, started Akagi, and its awsome.
But...can someone explain the rules of Mahjong? The anime is too fast to understand it as a complete newbie like i am.
Its great and awsome, but with udnerstanding the game it should be even more awsome.

And now im off watching Kaiji.

Well 4 episodes in and I'm starting to find this show pretty lacking. It just seems that the way the story is being told is WAY to slow and I have a bad feeling this is going to end up like the first part of the chuunin exam. Something along the lines of the real goal was to survive the game and those that win or lose by the rules stated are the ones who are actually the real losers in this game. I mean its WAY to easy to just get out with your 3 stars and starting money so thats the most likely twist I can see for the end of this drawn out process.

I'll give this a few more episodes but I'm still not all that inspired by it at this point.

Kaiji EP 7 Triad (http://a.scarywater.net/triad/%5BTriad%5D_Kaiji_-_07.mkv.torrent)

Seeing as Kaiji and his group can freely transfer stars between them, and cards as well, it doesn't really matter for them how many cards they've got left, they just need 9 stars, since they can cancel each others cards out. (as long as they keep them even, since they've made a point of that, although it seems like stars can be transferred freely, if so they wouldn't need to keep the cards even either)

Funai however, has a card left, and needs to get rid of it in order to survive. He needs to either use it or give it to someone. And no one wants to play him, because his scam was uncovered. So couldn't Kaiji offer to take his last card off him in exchange for all the stars he can afford to give in order to survive? The only hindrance I can see to this is "x"s 3 scissors, if he for some reason decides to play Funai(or Funai could bribe him to play him with stars). That could be fixed if Kaiji manages to taunt "x" into playing all his cards against him though, leaving only Funai's card. Maybe something like that is Kaiji's current plan?

I feel like I might be missing something crucial though, this might just sound stupid. Am I missing something?

WTF! after all those episodes.. There's finally a woman in this kind of art! And she didn't have big nose!!!

Surprisingly it took me awhile to notice that. Midway through the episode long after shes been introduced, I thought to myself "Holy shit... there was a woman." Having watched Akagi and 9 episodes of Kaiji without one woman introduced, you would think I would have noticed that sooner.

What an awesome episode.

Sucked that Kaiji showed so much hesitation at the beginning of the 'human tumble game' but it turns out it was for the best. Had he been in front, someone would have no doubt caught up and down he goes.

Though he still has to worry about the one guy behid him, it looks like he has that covered in the preview of the next episode, and it looks like Sahara learns what Kaiji went through on the Espior the hard way.

Great stuff.

You know I really can't agree episode 11 was anything special. The trick to it was blatantly obvious and while they might pull it out in future episodes nothing about this one was all that good. This isn't even a game with any strategy unlike the previous setup its just far to simple.

I've liked a lot of this series but every now and then the episodes just drag and seem over dramatic this is a perfect example of such a episode.

On a more positive note this leg seems MUCH shorter then the restricted Rock Paper Scissors one atleast and I find that to be a positive for the series in general.

I can't say I enjoyed the beginning of this arc too much as it didn't involve much strategy like the Espoir did, but the past few episode have been very entertaining and were a lot more intriguing than I first thought they were going to be, in particular I thought they did Ishida's death scene very well, and I was surprised when Sahara got blown away after reaching the 'end'. I was not expecting a twist like that at that point of the beam crossing, and a glass path was fairly realistic as it would be very hard to see at night time and under those circumstances.

I'm looking forward to these 'E Cards', and it looks like I wont have to wait much longer, as episode 16 was released recently.

Since Triad is not on a very strict schedule, they could be behind a few weeks and go on to sub multiple episodes and release them back to back or in a bunch. Basically if they do a multiple release, they were behind on subbing the series -- unless it actually was a double header airing.

Anyways, episode 23 has been released, time to see Kaiji's plan from stepping on the empty box of tissues.

So, its what noone expected to be different: Kaiji´s fucked again.

Yet, i wonder why the hidden piece is missing. That´s the mystery to me. Also, did the chairman kinda mark the regular winning tile? Looked suspicious to me.

Ah, well, there has to be a trick to this game, because otherwise, an ending completely based on luck would be kinda sucky.

Finished watching the final episode, and considering that I thought there wasn't going to be a second season I didn't even consider Kaiji losing, so I was surprised to say the least, however I do think it was for the best he lost, as winning and ending this series based on luck like that just wouldn't sit well with me.

Overall it was an excellent season, and despite there being a couple arcs that I thought I wouldn't like at the start, by the time they were finished, I was very entertained.
