A preview has been released by Genjo:

Ghost Hound Trailer 1 (h264) (http://a.scarywater.net/genjo-subs/%5BGenjo%5D_Ghost_Hound_Trailer_1_%5Bh264%5D%5B25E AEDEB%5D.mp4.torrent)

Description from AniDB

Reality is a dream, the dreams of the night are real.

In the world of Utsushiyo (reality), the development of an electronic brain far far away and long ago allows two different worlds to overlap.

Within the last vestiges of Japan`s raw landscape, lies a small coastal town. In it live three middle school students: Komori Tarou, Ogami Makoto, and Nakajima Masayuki. Each holds within them a unique past that cannot be erased.

Once more, but by different causes, three people learn that by the extraction of one`s soul, the coming and going between Utsushiyo and Kakuriyo (hidden world) is possible. Amidst the boys` adventure in Kakuriyo, they come to understand where it is is connected to.

An eternal spiritual story is offered to the adults who possess the minds of boys.

At last, this fall, the curtain will rise!!

Original Work of Masamune Shirow, Script by Chiaki J. Konaka (Lain, Kino's Journey), character design from Oka Mariko (Jigoku Shoujo).

The trailer looks pretty good, lots of really strange looking characters, interesting setting, and it shows a lot of promise. I've always been a fan of the art style Oka Mariko used in Jigoku Shoujo, and GHOST HOUND looks even cleaner.

That was really slow and confusing. This series looks to be a real slow one I'd imagine. Not sure what else I can say for it. Hopefully it turns out to be something more than a head scratcher.

The genre of this show is officially lethargy.

I have no idea what's going on but maybe subsequent episodes will tell. The graphics were rather interesting, at least.

Something about the pacing is making me bored. Episode 2 was a little better, but that Tokyo kid annoys the hell out of me.

The psychologist seems really helpful and kind at times, but mostly, he's just freaky...

This series will start slowly, looking at the progress in the last two episodes. There may be potential in this one. They've introduced some fairly interesting characters, but just haven't developed them far enough, or at a good enough pace.

PS: the most interesting character is the girl with big eyes. Not only does she have eyes that can see supernatural things (it's not every day that you set eyes on the dragon god), but she has telescopic vision to identify a glint in distant clouds. Slow pace isn't a problem, at least not yet. My only fear is if this turns out digimon style and they go fight spirits episodically.

Aye, I'm downloading 720p eps from Genjo. In a higher resolution the big eyed girl's eyes look even bigger. Take my word for that.

Which is a better subber you reckon? Genjo or Shinsen, disregarding the 720p goodness, though I think Shinsen releases they HD later on too.

Who knows... I remember having the first ep by Shinsen on my HD as well at one point but I don't think I ever had a chance to watch it before I switched to Genjo (and deleted Shinsen's sub). I have no complaints about Genjo's work, though. It seems perfectly fine to me.

This series certainly seems more and more psychological episode by episode. Still, there lingers the big eyed girl and her visions. But they could also be only some psychological condition. Though it wouldn't explain how she seemed to be able to see the guy flying around in his dream.

I guess the show will move towards the supernatural if one believes the description.

Buffalobiian
Wed, 11-14-2007, 09:41 PM
I thought this show WAS supernatural? Seems to me like the girl can see spirits. When they guy's dreaming, his soul comes out from his body and takes a tour, so the girl can see him. Haven't watched ep 3 yet, so you'll most likely know something I don't.

For those interested, ep 3 by Shinsen (http://bt.shinsen-subs.org/%5BShinsen-Subs%5D_Ghost_Hound_-_03_%5B97B6D697%5D.avi.torrent)

I'll be giving both Genjo and Shinsen's 720p releases a try. I'm assuming Genjo's releases are encoded with a higher bitrate, since file sizes are like 348 vs 170MB. High Bitrate HD is the bomb!! :D Stupid Australia, having download quotas and all...:(

Yeah, it is supernatural, no doubt, but I find it rather interesting how it's so psychological at the same time. You rarely see it depicted like this. And all of the main characters seem to have their own problems, no less. It's also promising how the big eyed girl seems to be gaining more screen time as she looks like an interesting character altogether. Firm attitude and everything.

And she's not exempt from her own problems, from the looks of things. The Genjo HD looked good. I'll watch Shinsen a little later to compare. I actually didn't know the brown haired guy killed the other person at his school. I thought he just witnessed the death...

Well, for all we know it could be one of those cases where a person thinks he killed somebody but in reality he only played a little partial role in pushing somebody over the edge (not literally). He's so annoying now, not sparing the others from any kind of remarks, probing their past and present condition that you could imagine he might have driven somebody quite crazy and caused a suicide indirectly. But still it wouldn't actually equal to killing someone.

This ep picked up the pace by alot. The main characters are finally going to start talking to each other now, so more development from now on rather than pure facts is to be expected. Three guys standing around sweaty, breathing heavily and eyelids half closed looking down at a girl in a bed sneaks in some thoughts that even the whole bassy tension music can't push back. We get a bit more info into Makoto's life, and the other guy too, forgot his name. The OBE forms were funny. They still had their ears, eyebrows and bottoms intact.

I'm really liking this series. Genjo's quality 720p just makes it all the better.

I just started this one and watched the first five eps in a row (when I should have been doing homework....bah, anime is going to make me fail school) and I had no problems with the pacing. I can see how the episodes would be frustrating one at a time, but watched all together it feels like an appropriate speed. It feels more real. They've done a pretty good job of character development so far, giving us some info not only about everyone's past, but their families and community as well.

My favourite part so far was when they were being purified by the shrine priest, and the Tokyo kid tries to run away from having his hair cut, and the big eyed girl looks at him and says, "Take it like a man." She's quite the feisty one.

The crazy grandmother just scares me. I wouldn't be surprised if they were to meet her in the Unseen World somewhere.

The reiteration of the Black Giant in the woods is interesting. It could be the spirit of the kidnapper left behind after he was killed. I'm curious too about what they meant by saying that the abandoned village is a boundary between the seen and Unseen worlds. Could this hypothetically mean that there might be travel in both directions? Looking forward to the next episode.

I remember them talking about how the kidnapper should have been taking orders from someone else, or how he had another objective or something. I might've been confused it with other series, but that would mean the Black Giant (or Ghost?) was behind it somehow.

I think that hospital is some sort of gate that allows the crossing between the two worlds. The three guys just did it.

This show is like a weekly psychology/neurology lesson. I like that. It was good how the girl views a souless body as something akin to stone. Beside the angry look, the other thing that stood out was that she was sort of worried as Torou stared at the rift, but for some reason, she left afterwards. It's known now that she can see spirits, but she can see into their minds too?

This show is like a weekly psychology/neurology lesson.

You got that damn right! Especially this episode. Having only studied some more or less superficial psychology in high school I find I have very little knowledge on which to base any critical viewing of this show, and thus half of what they say could be made up and improvised by the author and I would never know, but nevertheless it's very interesting. I also like how, again especially well illustrated in this episode, they go back and forth between the supernatural and the psychological, and there's no clear traditional division there; for example the temple priest seems to think there's something psychologically wrong with Miyako the big eyed girl.

It's also insanely refreshing the three dudes (and Miyako) don't have their "powers" to save the world from some demon, mad scientist, or alien invaders...

Yeah, and the first time I saw the OP with the three guys working together against some ghost thing, I thought this was going to be a digimon type thing. So glad I was wrong. :D.

I've been doing a year of anatomy and human biology at uni gives me some deeper knowledge, and all the physiological things they said about the brain and all are entirely true. I'm willing to assume the psychology aspects are equally valid.

That election candidate is definitely suspicious. But how does a person go, OMG, you look exactly like this guy I knew who makes me sh!t my pants, but I only noticed that until you tell me who you are....

The professor has a purpose now. I was starting to see him as a nice guy after that scene where they discussed Torou's mother. Still nice, I suppose, just with a purpose now.

So Miyako acknowledges that what she sees is something that's in her mind...That's interesting that she knows that, or rather, thinks that. I'm pretty positive that the tall black ghost is the kidnapper or his boss, but why can Makoto see it? I don't think the other brown haired guy could. I also find the use of sound distortion matches this anime very well. Just hope Nipponsei releases an ED single.

Doesn't show any signs of going downhill. It had to go somewhere, though, and thus it's good it chose a direction (well, let's say a preliminary one if not anything exact yet). The relaxed pace of the series never bothered me at all because there certainly were lots of stuff in this show to keep you occupied but for the story's own sake it has to proceed. It kind of baffles me that slowly everybody and their dogs start to see supernatural things in the town but then again I can't yet predict what the whole thing will present before the end.

And I never quite realised this. I thought Miyako and Tarou would have made such a nice pair...

lol, Tarou blushed. Funny how the priest is more of a scholar who knows about the customs, but with no beliefs. I think in the next eps or so, Makoto's going to be obsessed or be corrupted by his wolf changing and the other fellows will have to bring him back. Hit transformation looked much better than Tarou's, abit looking evil. This pace has allowed them to introduce a lot of mysteries without feeling cramped or overloading, but if they intend to solve them all, they'll have to start soon.

Good work, Tarou! You even made Miyako smile and found out why she appeared suddenly so cold. Based on this ep there is still much hope left for him. But I had to laugh when he was carrying Miyako and then stopped at the bottom of those bloody endless stairs, looked up and sighed.

One fine aspect of this series is that despite all the supernatural phenomena the characters still all seem very realistic and believable. Great many of them for sure seem to have problems of their own yet that only gives them more personality.

Buffalobiian

+1 for Tarou, even if Miyako had to climb the last few steps herself. I was expecting some CPR back there too. Talking about realistic characters, I find it kinda funny yet creepy that the professor proudly says "I'm bound by professional discretion." then goes to a nearby sake bar and says to some stranger "I'm treating so and so, he suffers from blah blah blah." He can't drink, so he has no excuse. Miyako's drowning scene reminds me of the girl who did the same thing in the stormy river. I think it's Miyako but it could be Tarou's sister too.

Kraco
Sat, 02-16-2008, 07:36 PM
Yeah, I was also laughing at the doctor. Maybe he was still in too much of a shock after seeing the strange... girl thing in the classroom. I thought he would mention something vague but he just kept going telling more and more details. I don't think his elevator was quite ascending all the way up anymore that evening. But it would be cool if it somehow ended up bringing Tarou and Miyako even closer together.

A somewhat strange episode. Not that strange episodes would have been anything strange in this series but this one largely took place in Tarou's subconsciousness and the other worlds, and not all of those served any such purpose that I could have understood what they offered to the story. I wonder if Snark is going to appear again later. Maybe, if Tarou finds his way back to the abstract realm.

Otherwise Tarou is heading down a nice path: Peeping at Miyako in his incorporeal form. Although it's no foolproof way since Miyako can see those beings.

I thought Snark sounded like the priest, but I guess not. The priest reacted quite urgently when Tarou mentioned that phrase, guess it's got a meaning even he's afraid of, and he's more of an academic than a priest. Ogami's servant is evil. That last guy saw it. EVIL.

I think all the Ogamis are somehow evil, Makoto included. It's also somehow connected to their business model, I deem. No doubt in the past their business was even more fear based than now. However, I have to agree that servant probably had something exceptionally nasty in her mind. Let's hope nothing happens to Miyako.

edit: Well, it's not like Ghost Hound episodes aren't content filled, but this one in particular was revealing. The priest thinks Miyako is reciting texts she's read before, while the psychologist is asking her if something's going to happen. Though she said it was the Princess's words, I think she set it up somehow. Firstly, she didn't come straight away, and was instead on a phone call, while the princess's words were "Come here." And when she left Miyako, her face said "it's done." Mysterious music, beautify HD and baffling content keeps me drawn to this series.

Ghost Hound is not listed as "ongoing" on what I gather to be Genjo's now official site. Anyone think that it's dropped?

Well, well. I guess it's time to give up and get them from Shinsen.

Looks like the case. The batch has pretty a pathetic number of seeds, but it'll have to do:

I got them all from Shinsen's bots, on their irc channel. Didn't take long at all.

It took a change of ISP to finally get enough quota for the rest of this, but I've finally finished it.

I didn't bother rewatching the previous eps (1-17) to refresh myself, since each episode's sort of intertwined in a weird mind-warping way anyway.

Like Chrome Shelled Regios a few days ago, I didn't try to pause or figure out the details, but it was still enjoyable anyway as a "friends help each other out on a psychological journey and heal their wounds" anime.

Makoto's storyline made the most sense, followed by dad's-a-scientist guy, Taro and Miyako's in increasing order of comprehension difficulty.

In the end, I understood it to be a conspiracy involving a religion cult having influence with the underworld mixed with artificial beings screwing up the natural order.

My favourite things about this show's been the picture and music though. Picture-wise, it's always crisp and clean, accented with HD broadcasting. The music can range from weird to eerie, so that's pretty appropriate.

Not everybody's cup of tea, I should imagine, but I'd recommend it for anyone looking something not necessarily fantastic, but a bit different. Character development, most certainly.
