edit: meant to make title "sealing kyuubi" but owell.
ok... so this has probably already been discussed years ago.
but i was in barnes and noble tonight and browsing and wound up picking up naruto volume 14. i have read all naruto manga as scanlations in the past. But in re-reading this oricimaru says of saritubi's death god sealing jutsu "so this is how the kyuubi was sealed" or something like that. So... when he seals the first and second hokage, he has a spiral seal like naruto on his chest/belly. I am wondering if this was the sealing technique used to seal the kyuubi... how did it wind up on naruto and not on the fourth ? maybe i am just reading a little too far into this but i t just seemed like a small inconsistancy.
but, that was definately an awesome hour of reading at the book store.

The technique the 3rd used and the one the 4th used were two different techniques.

Untrue. The two techniques are the same technique. It's an inconsistency which has never been explained. I never read the old manga; I started reading right at Kakashi Gaiden. However, in the anime, they mentioned that the person who uses the Death God sealing jutsu would also have their soul sealed along with the one they were intending to seal - and that the two soulds would forever be locked in battle. (Did this happen in the manga as well?)
At the time, they were referring to the souls of Orochimaru and the Third, however, if it holds true for the time when the Fourth sealed the Kyuubi inside Naruto, then this leads to even more questions. Why did the Fourth choose to use a small child as a container as opposed to himself? Does this mean that he can still be alive? Or is his soul also sealed inside of Naruto?
Another theory I've heard was that the Fourth might have been turned into a baby after using the jutsu. Anyway, I think this topic is interesting, and open-ended, so let's hear some more opinions.

The theory that the fourth turned into a baby after using the jutsu makes very little sense but it would explain a lot of things, like their similarities. However it would make a plot hole as to why everyone hated Naruto so much, which they probably wouldn't have if they knew he was the reincarnation of their beloved Fourth Hokage, Demon Fox non withstanding.
As to the sealing jutsu, we know that it takes your soul as a price to summon the Death God into the world and pull out souls, however I don't think it's concrete that the user has no control over what is done with the soul that was removed once it's out. The Third couldn't do feasibly do anything else with the souls he took in the situation he was in, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that he could have sealed the Hokage's souls into someone else if he'd had then prepared before hand.
I suspect that the Death God just couldn't take the soul of the Kyubi and so the Fourth had to seal it in a living person instead of himself.

Oh. *Another* discussion on the death god sealing technique.
I'll let it slide since the last one hadn't been around since at least before shippuuden.

The "Naruto is the rebirth of the Fourth" is an interesting theory. If true, the villagers may not know that the Fourth was reborn as Naruto if he lost his memories. It has been commented a lot in the series about how Naruto looks a lot like the Fourth, and he completed the Rasengan. The completion of the rasengan would make sense if he was the Fourth reborn.
An alternate theory is that the Fourth used an extension of the Death God sealing technique which trapped the Fourth and Kyuubi inside Naruto to be forever locked in combat.

Naruto does look very similar to Fourth but other than that, has no simliar traits whatsoever. (personality, skills)
I agree that the skills are the same, but imho, those skills have a little variance maybe. Please keep in mind that we have already seen another sealing jutsu by Yamato and these sealing techniques, although rarely shown through the show, are easily used by these sannin or higher lvl ninjas easily. So its okay to assume that the 3rd and 4th developed their own styles of sealing jutsus or have a little bit of difference among them just because.
To eliminate the alternate theory about how Fourth and Kyuubi inside Naruto are locked in combat forever, then whenever we have traveled to Naruto's inner world, why have we only seen Kyuubi caged rather than the 4th as well? If they are busy fighting forever, we should at least see Kyuubi extremely tired or damaged or show signs of tiresome activity

I agree that the 4th is not in Naruto, however I dont see how Kyuubi would ever be tired. He has almost unlimited Chakra from what I remember. -dg-

Here's my theory, it's a long shot!
Okay so if the round circles appear on the user of the technique (3rd hokage) then my theory is that:
Uchiha Madara (or Tobi) manipulated the Demon Fox with their Sharingan and forced the Demon Fox to partake in the death god sealing jutsu. The reason Uchiha Madara/ Tobi did this was not to save the village, but because they knew of no other way to seal / control bijuu's back then. Uchiha Madara / Tobi planned to make the Demon Fox use the sealing technique and somehow go inside of a child that they could later manipulate when the time was right.
The fourth, ofcourse, wanted to get rid of the Demon Fox, but at the same time did not want to help evil people like Madara, so he had a plan. He would give up his own son, Naruto, and told his sensei (Jiraya) and his pupil (Kakashi) that he would trick Madara / Tobi into thinking they could later manipulate / use Naruto and the Nine-Tails to their liking, but in reality he wanted his sensei and pupil to take care of Naruto and never let Madara get his hands on Naruto when the time was right.
And Madara/ Tobi being the evil villain they are, went back on the deal and killed the fourth right after the sealing ritual so that no one would know his true intentions.

Thats a good theory but why didnt they rather seal the Demon Fox into a Non-Konoha ninja/ their subordinate who they can easily control or meet rather than sealing it in the hands of another village, well protected by a famous sannin?

Because then there would be no show dattebayo.
On a more serious note, perhaps the fourth pretended to be Madara's ally.
Remember not to double post, kthx.

Whew... that theory is out there. The main problem is that we're not sure the Sharingan can manipulate the bijuu. When Sasuke went to Naruto's "inner space", it didn't seem like he was able to control Kyuubi, only to send him away. He did manipulate Manda later, so maybe it's just a matter of using more chakra?
Another thing to consider is that we know there's something fishy with the Uchiha clan (there was an entire disussion about it some time ago) regarding the true origin of the Sharingan. I can't remember the link right now, and maybe it was on a different forum, but... the theory was that Itachi had other motives for killing his clan besides his standard lame (IMO) excuse that he wanted to "test his container". But, I like your theory because it is simple, albeit improbable.
