My PS3 is pretty noisy by my standards as well.

My quiet PC is much more noisy than ps3, and i always have it on while playing on PS3 - i use it at Digital to analog audio converter.

By my standards, the PS3 is noisy, at least the 2 or 3 ones I've heard.
Once you use it with playTV, or game, for some time, the fan(s) will eventually start getting louder.
Since I plan to use it as a media station that records TV at night, I'd rather have it to be dead silent, because I can hear my watch tick in another room at night... That's how I am

To me the ideal would be passive cooling PS3 with SSD drive and PlayTV that actually records HD DVB-T, but that's a bit too demanding it seems.

My PlayStation 3 barely makes any sound, even when playing games for extended periods of time. It really drowns out when you're playing games or watching movies on it.

I hear mine whenever I turn it on, I think. Haven't touched it for a while though, so I might just check it out this weekend. A vacuum clean is needed too, I think.

You guys must live in incredibly dusty rooms or something, ps3 is a dust collecter and if you don't clean it ( or have a dust sucking pc like me ;P), its going to run hotter.
Because the ps3 should be very very silent, even my ps2 makes more noise.... and it doesn't even have a fan!

And david wow you can hear your watch in another room =O, that's super human hearing right there.

At night yes, the ones that actually have needles of course :D

And my remarks are for a specific use: recording TV at night, when I try to sleep.

In that case, the most humble fan will be noticed, any harddrive with platters, some transformers when they're not good quality.

Of course when you play games sound turned on, you should'nt hear your PS3 unless there's a problem

There's also a new Gundam game coming for PS3 called Kidou Senki Gundam Senki.

The game will feature cooperative and network options, a brand new original story and scenario mode and more. The scenario mode will feature the exact same characters revealed in Gundam Ace as well as the RX-78-7. Of course, the game will feature HD animation with a hybrid of 3D models and 2D character animation.

Update on the gundam game.

Seems it will be pretty fun if not deep, but it ultimately boils down to the gameplay, hope to see some footage of it soon.

Is there an English version planned?

Stitch
Fri, 06-26-2009, 08:20 AM
Yeah, when I first got my PS3, I immediately noticed how much dust it had gathered on its surface during a single three-hour play through. I thought it was just a one time thing and forgot about it, but more and more dust began to accumulate on the surface as time went on... until I started to wipe it clean after every use. Since then, I've been keeping it covered with a small hand towel when not in use. I still wipe off the ports and vents every weekend too.

I do, however, live in a very dusty environment, and my entertainment center is right next an open window, so take that for whatever relevance you will.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma II Demo Planned for PSN

A Ninja Gaiden Sigma II demo will be released on the PlayStation Network in September, Tecmo and Team Ninja have confirmed.

Speaking at a London press event - which is going on right now - the developer reiterated that the PS3 version of Ninja Gaiden II will see full release this autumn.

A more detailed release announcement will be made in "late July", it said.

Castle Crashers (one of the best Xbox Live Arcade games) is coming to PS3.

I'll finally be able to play it with my buddy Naozumi Sudo, since he doesn't want to pay for Xbox Live Gold. Can't wait for this along with Fat Princess.

Hope that it works with more file format someday... for mediaplayer experience.
wait for serious noise testing...

and in parallel, I'm having an eye on Ion solutions... some are already interresting to, but I'm eagerly waiting for a test with 7 inside... ideally 7lite.

There isn't.

Also Europeans aren't getting "screwed" over, that's just the economic value of things, everything is more expensive. If you make 1000$ a month for some job, there is a very good chance someone in europe will get 1000€ for the same job, perhaps a tad less ( I know it's like that for doctors).

I actually like both versions, but what I think makes like like my big version a bit more is the finish.

They went for a lighter, matte black finish, and I prefer my shiny, deep black version. Same with the silver bits. So while slim, the new PS3 doesn't look quite as classy.

The console war between Sony and Microsoft is heating up even more. :)

Microsoft's priciest version of the Xbox 360 is getting a $100 price drop this Friday and it's top selling model of the console is being phased out.

The 120GB Xbox 360 Elite will sell for $299.99, while the popular 60GB Xbox 360 Pro will be cut to $249.99. Despite being Microsoft's current top selling model, production of the the Xbox 360 Pro has already stopped, Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for xbox 360, said.

"With the Pro console we are dropping the price down $50 to $249 while supplies last," he said. "Moving forward we will have two (models), the $199 Arcade and the Elite console for $299."

Microsoft's price drop comes a week after Sony announced that their priciest version of the Playstation 3 was getting a $100 price drop and the company unveiled a sleeker version of their console, dubbed the PS3 Slim, which would sell for $299. Sony's new prices hit over the next week.

Greenberg calls the timing of Microsoft's price drop news a coincidence, denying that it was in response to Sony's price drop.

I search that too, seems like you do not have direct access to the hardware, rather your linux distro is virtualized.
Results?
No access to cell's full power, and no access to RSX either.
So you end-up with a slow processing unit, not muc ram and no GPU.
In one word:
Useless.

I have the 80GB that came with Motorstorm. I've never tried to play a PS2 game and I am too lazy to hook it up and see if it does. That chart says "Software" does that mean it will play PS2 DVDs?

When it says "Yes" for Psone, does that mean it will play PSOne games?

Marik
Sun, 08-30-2009, 07:03 AM
Yes, by software, it means that particular PS3 model supports PS2 Backwards Compatibility via software emulation as opposed to the hardware emulation that the original 60gb and 20gb had. Not all PS2 games will work, though, a majority should.

All PS3s play PS One games.

My PS3 is not backward compatible with PS2, and I read that it's not likely that later versions be updated to software emulation because the PS3 does not have the power to
emulate both the PS2's CPU and GPU in software. I've never tested my PS3 with my PS1 discs though, partly because I'd think it'd look awful on HD screens.

darkshadow
Sun, 08-30-2009, 09:02 AM
The PS3 has more theoretical performance power then an xbox360, yet the 360 can emulate a pretty large library of xbox games just fine, and we all know the xbox is far more powerful then a PS2.
So what you read seems like a highly implausible reason Psyke, furthermore a patent was discovered on emulation:

it’s basically a patent for a method that would allow the PS3’s Cell chip to translate code from the PS2’s Emotion Engine. Not half-assed software emulation (which in previous PS3 models couldn’t run some games), full, total replication of the functionality of the Emotion Engine.

source (http://kotaku.com/5304117/sony-patents-method-to-emulate-ps2-on-ps3)

So yeah, I strongly believe the "no bc support" statement was just about HW bc.

Thankfully I have the 80gb MGS4 bundle, which has software emulation. Though, the only PS2 game I've actually tried is FFX.

Anyways, does the 360 emulate well? Last time I tried, I tried playing KOTOR 1 and 2, and it ran miserably laggy.

Yeah. I got that one too. And I've never even touched MGS4 =P

So far I've played this PS2 games fully on my PS3

SMT: Persona 4
SMT: Nocturne
SMT: Devil Summoner

and I'm on my way to finish this others...

SMT: Devil Summoner 2
SMT: Digital Devil Saga

So far the only PS2 game I have on my library (42 games) that doesn't run is Ar Tonelico 2.

So yeah... Im happy with my software emulation PS3.

Heck... I heard the game even has problems running on a PS2. On the final boss, the game freezes on the 3rd round if you haven't kill him by then.

I still want to play it though... so I'll have to dust off my PS2 one of this days.

God of War I and II Coming to PS3 with Smoother Gameplay and Trophies

Reworked versions of God of War and God of War II, featuring smoother graphics running at a faster frame rate, hit stores this holiday on a single Blu-ray disc, Sony Computer Entertainment announced this morning.

God of War Collection will feature both Playstation 2 games running at 1280 by 720 resolution and 60 frames a second. The collection, which will cost $40, will also include trophy support for the games.

August NPD numbers.

Hardware

Nintendo DS 552.9K
Wii 277.4K
Xbox 360 215.4K
PlayStation 3 210.0K
PSP 140.3K
PlayStation 2 105.9K

Software

01. MADDEN NFL 10 360 928,000
02. WII SPORTS RESORT W/ WII MOTION PLUS WII 754,000
03. MADDEN NFL 10 PS3 665,000
04. BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM* 360 303,000
05. BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM* PS3 290,000
06. MADDEN NFL 10 PS2 160,000
07. DISSIDIA: FINAL FANTASY PSP 130,000
08. WII FIT* WII 128,000
09. MARIO KART W/WHEEL WII 120,000
10. FOSSIL FIGHTERS NDS 92,000

360 and PS3 sales were pretty much even last month. The September sales data should be pretty interesting with both systems being $299 now. I can't wait to see how they both do.

The new Batman game did well considering that it was released on the 25th of August and the NPD reporting period ended on the 29th. Selling almost 600,000 copies in a span of 4-5 days is pretty damn good.

I honestly can't believe those numbers for the PS2. It's been what 9 years since it launched. It's hard to believe there's even 100k people each month buying a console that gets maybe 20 games a year, and those are usually Multiplatform shovelware. The only rational answer I can give is that they're poor, or they're owners of a non-BC PS3 and wanted to play say Persona 4.

Yeah, PS2 and Mario Kart Wii both amaze me. Mario Kart has been out since April 08 and and still remains in the top 10 after all this time. The game still sells for the full price of $49.99 at most places.

This coming Tuesday (9/15) will be pretty busy. WET, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Need for Speed: Shift, NHL 2K10, and NHL 10 all come out the same day. More info besides the pic I posted earlier.

The tri-Ace developed, Square Enix published Star Ocean: The Last Hope was released on the Xbox 360 earlier this year. The title is not an Xbox 360 exclusive, it's coming to the PlayStation 3.

Dubbed Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, the game will be hitting the PS3 February 4, 2010 and priced at ¥8,190 (US$90). The game features reworked menu screens and a tweaked battle system with auto-targeting. SO4: International also features English and Japanese voice acting options. It really is international!

Interesting. Haven't played Tales of Vesperia yet so i'm eagerly and hoping for a US release.

As for Star Ocean: The Last Hope, it was mediocre at best. I much prefer Star Ocean 3's battle system. I wonder what else they're adding to the international version.

Sega Document Suggests PS2 & Dreamcast Emulation on PS3

Sega has accidentally leaked a confidential document which suggests the PS3 could be gaining full PS2 emulator capabilities after all, along with the ability to play Dreamcast titles.

The document can be viewed below:
(it apparently somehow found its way onto a Sega public FTP (http://www.sankakucomplex.com/goto/http://blog.livedoor.jp/htmk73/archives/260775.html))
SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 ? DRAFT FOR COMMENTS
Sony PS3
・SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year
・Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)
Motion Controller
• Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
• No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
• Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
• SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
• Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
• Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.
Yakuza
・Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).
Valkyria 1937
・Could bundle with PSP as well.
Sonic Anniversary
・Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.
PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
・SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
・For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads ? similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…
DC Digital Titles
・If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.
PSP Titles
・For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
・Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet ? all massive franchises.
Sony is of course on the record as emphatically stating that there is no chance of PS2 emulation on the PS3, ever; though considering their denials of the PS3 Slim it does appear that they are not worth taking seriously as a source on their own products…

This question has been bugging me for a long time....have you guys ever had slowdowns when playing on your PS3?

It rarely happens, but sometimes Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm will go into slow-mo for a second or two, then everything will be back to normal. FIFA happens more often. When I watched my brother play, it'll happen every 4 seconds or something.

He's only playing on 576i or whatever the SD PAL standard is.

Is this a sign of overheating? Or is it normal?

PlayTV could upgrade to record DVB-T HD and decode AAC for France and New-Zealand:

http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=ps3_playtv

MPEG-4 Issues: June 18 2009 French TNT TV have upgraded the DVB-T MPEG-4 AVCHD transmissions to include AAC and AAC+ audio, this has caused PlayTV not to have sound due to not supporting AAC stream. New Zealand also suffers from the same thing hence TV3 being the only channel with sound. The PlayTV developers are working on this issue. We should expect another software update soon according to David Hine marketing manager SCEE New Zealand.
Next software update id hoped to include

AAC/AAC+ support
AC3 (at the moment PlayTV only supports Dolby Digital 2.0)
MPEG-4 recording
MPEG-2 HD record improvement

When it's out and tested to be true, I may offer my wife the combo:
Panasonic 42V10, PS3 slim, PlayTV, PS3 compatible Bluetooth remote.

Dynasty Warriors: Fist of the North Star Announced

The new game being teased by Koei Tecmo -- the one with the flowers? Um, yeah, it's actually about punching people: As predicted, the game's been revealed by Famitsu as Fist of the North Star Musou (officially, just Hokuto Musou, or North Star Musou) combining Koei's populous Dynasty Warriors series with the venerable manga series, and it's the smartest thing Koei has ever done with the Warriors series since the original idea.

The Fist of the North Star franchise follows a martial artist named Kenshiro who wanders around a post-apocalypse Earth, using his "Hokuto Shinken" style to fight gangsters that prey on hapless innocents. Why is this series so perfect for Warriors? Because it's a well-known universe in which it's perfectly believable for one guy to beat up a couple hundred enemies with his bare fists. This license will not require much adapting in the transition to a Warriors game.

Characters now confirmed are Kenshiro, Yuria, Raoh, Toki and Souther…

The notion of a Fist of the North Star game in the Musou series has excited fans of both game and manga considerably, and just as with Gundam it seems an ideal matchup, so success looks to be assured…

Hokuto Musou, according to the magazine, will be out sometime next year on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

I liked Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 1 and 2, so I'll get this too.

A game retracing the timeline of the vintage anime?
Incredible.
I've been watching 3 eps of the french dubed version (rerun), it was utterly unbearable...
I have to explain that they litterally butchered translation with very lame wordplays (you can't even imagine). That with a very dated animation and soundtrack, makes the experience painful.
Thing is that at the time of the original run, I thought it was fun... :D

Is the slim still limited in HDD height?
Because a 500GB 2.5 drive on a 120GB slim would be a good alternative too.

Uncharted 2 Title Update

The next time you start up UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves you will be required to download an update to the game (Japan and Asia regions — your update will be available next week).

Here’s the list of (most of) the changes we made. Some changes have been withheld to protect the innocent.

* Addressed respawn points when the artifact goes out of bounds in the Plunder gametype
* Dynamically adjust the win condition for fewer players during the course of a match
* Added features to deter players from voluntarily leaving during a match
* Added rate limit to “When a Chapter is Completed” Twitter event
* Fixed a display issue during letterboxing
* Fixed Danish Trophy description
* Fixed screenshot utility in standard definition resolutions
* Fixed the “Players Met” list not displaying recent players
* Addressed a variety of Multiplayer connectivity issues

Double Cash Weekend has started as well and continues until Monday, November 2, 2009, at 11:00 AM PST.

In every match during Double Cash Weekend, you’ll be getting twice the Cash award you normally would for completing typical game actions – not medal-related currency awards – giving everyone a leg up in increasing their Rank for a limited time.

PS3s aren't really region free. The games are, but the consoles are sort of pseudo-region free. Some things work and some things don't.

Stealing a post Ryll did at the FFXIII thread...

What else, besides DVD, is not region free on the PS3? I was under the assumption that a Japanese PS3 and an American PS3 only differed on the DVD region.

Im under the impression that if I had funds on my Japanese PSN account I could buy stuff from there.

Heck... I have 3 accounts. An American, one from Europe and a Japanese one. I can get the free demos from all 3, but have only bought from the American one, which is a pain since I have to import a PSN Card.

Marik
Mon, 12-14-2009, 03:58 PM
Yeah, you can buy games and stuff from other PSN stores, but DLC won't work on another region's game. Like if you have the US Version of Rock Band, you can't use songs from the EU PSN on it, because it's region coded.

RyougaZell
Mon, 12-14-2009, 04:09 PM
That I do agree. But if you imported a Japanese PS3 to use American games it would be no problem to get the American DLC, right?

Its just that Ryll's post on not all being region free wasn't very especific.

Hence my question of why Ryll says importing one would not help him (besides the DVD's and PSone games)
I wasn't specific at the time because I couldn't be. I don't own a PS3, so it really came down to a quick 10 minute google search. Between the discussion here and some additional research, maybe this will be more enlightening:

It may not seem like a lot when you first look at it, but region-locked DLC is a big issue for this generation of consoles. Publishers are huge on DLC now (enough that some criticize that games are going gold intentionally unfinished or loaded with locked content).

Of course, this is coming from someone who doesn't own a PS3, and where Microsoft has been considerably more aggressive in getting exclusive or timed-exclusive DLC. I'm expecting Sony to respond in turn. It may be that it is not as prominent on PSN as it is on XBL, without owning one I'm not qualified to answer that. Still, if the past year or two have been any indication, DLC is only going to increase dramatically for both consoles, and this generation will be a lot longer for both Sony and Microsoft. The two each have peripherals intended to close the gap with the Wii, if not surpass it, in order to extend the cycle further.

So while it might not seem like a big deal given that one can always import PSN cards, it might just be more of a hassle than it is worth, similar to what you said RZ. There is only going to be more DLC in the coming years. Independent of the two manufacturers, it is going to be Activision and EA pushing for more the hardest. Indie developers too.

DLC might be the only thing region locked, but I think you might be downplaying the importance of that in the coming year or two.

RyougaZell
Mon, 12-14-2009, 09:21 PM
Maybe Im not explaining myself... or maybe I am getting confused myself but...

How is DLC region-locked? Why would you not be able to download stuff from the American Store if you own a Japanese Console? The DLC is directly linked to your PSN Account and not the console. Or am I wrong here?

Currently I have 5 dollars on my American PSN account. I also have an European and Japanese Account, and correct me if Im wrong, but if I owned an European or Japanese PSN Card I would be able to download from those accounts as well.

Am I wrong? If so please do tell. For I still can't see the issue regarding DLC.

For instance... if you owned an American game why would you try to get a DLC from the Japanese store if the same content is available on the American store? Or if you owned a Japanese game, why would you try the American or European store for DLC.

Like I said... Im confused here Ryll.

What I'm finding from search is that all DLC is region locked. Stand alone to the console, and in-game to the region the game is from.

Is it still free? Wipeout HD I mean. Or is it gone?

I opened up an European Account to get the Valkyria Chronicles Demo when it came out 2 months earlier than America. I think I also got a Premium Theme free from it. Or was it Japan?

The Japanese account I got it to download the Tales of Vesperia Demo... a Demo of a game that as each day passes seems more unlikely to see the light in english. I also got several PSP demos from the Japanese Store.

I just wish I had some yens in my Japanese Account to download the Demon's Souls Premium Theme.

And since the PSN accounts are free... well... if Marik tells me the Wipeout HD game is still free in Austria I'll be opening a new account.

Just received my cashback PS3 (from a supplier).
Did the setup, I'm updating it to 3.15

I was sure it would be noisy, and it is by my standards (I use my iphone to the lowest possible volume to listen to music for example...)

It was to sit in my bedroom, to record TV, TV recording playback, lightweight media center and blu-ray player.
I'll just have to put it in the room next to the bedroom and only route the hdmi from there. no big deal and the BT remote should do the trick.

The sound isn't that strong, although its not nighttime yet when the noise floor is a lot lower.
But it's ratling a bit, with lots of unpleasant harmonics that make it very noticeable.
The idea is that for a night recording (via playTV), the ps3 switched on will probably prevent me from sleeping if in the bedroom.

I know that may seem dumb or not that interresting, but since the lightweight/TVrecording/BR media center will probably be 98% of the use I'll have with that PS3, it's of the utmost importance to me.

Slim one. For some reason, at low speed the fan does not have a smooth sound that would have been somewhat acceptable. But that's just me anyways.

I've been playing with some functionalities, will have to better check blu-ray settings regarding judder...
There's great potential, HDMI CEC even works with my Panasonic screen, meaning you can use the PS3 with the screen's remote, which is great for my wife.
However, I wish they do not clutter XMB anymore as it seems there are lots of icons, most of which could be under the same section/icon. I think of all the PSN related stuff for example.
They should also pay attention to things they add like Life with Playstation and language localisation...
I'll wait for a bit before trying the videostore, prices are way too high, as I can have the same level of service for less (2.99€ for SD films, 3.99 for HD -renting- and buying titles is beetween 1 to 5€ or more expensive than actually buying the BR disc...)
I might at least subscribe for a PSN account if it does not force me to input my credit card data... like the applestore (although there was/is a solution)

Next thing is playTV, should buy it in the days to come.

Also, I wonder if the usb port can be powered when the PS3 is in sleep mode, so that it keeps charging the game controler. I have another solution working, but it would be a better idea to use the PS3s ports.

From magicbox:

iPhone hacker George Hotz "Geohot" has released the exploit code to hack the PS3 hardware. The exploit will give user full memory access and complete control over the processor, on PS3 running Firmware 2.4.2. He said the exploit should also work on all current versions.

Not sure if I want my PS3 games to be pirated :(

Not sure if true, but the exploit apparently needs the 'otherOS' functionality.

Playstation Plus (http://us.playstation.com/psn/playstation-plus/?EMC-HWSWNo&ATTR=PSU_PSPlusLnch_P001_PPP_AKR_001_PSPlus_H)

So yeah, Playstation Plus which is basically PSN but paid with extra features. PSN retains it's old features (yeah, you can still play games online without subscribing). It was announced at E3 and it launched today. So far the features are lackluster and I won't pay for it. (I already have an XBL subscription). Maybe if the offers they featured were better, and they seem to rotate new stuff every month or something I would think about it.

Oh yea, for early buyers who buy a year they get 3 months free. Your mileage may vary.

C'mon now, really? All he does is tinker with shit and make it possible for other people to tinker with shit. It's not like he creates bombs and turns out suicide bombers like hoes. I mean... I'll tell you who needs to be shot: Rush Limbaugh. Talk about a guy who's allowed to run rampant with freedom of speech and freedom of thought. If ever there existed a guy who made a case for 1984 big brother type shit in a weird, twisted, ironic way, it's Rush Limbaugh. That guy's mouth is given free license on radio airwaves, and the FCC does shit to stop him. Mr. Ruger and his eight offspring might get to doing some regulating though

After the PlayStation Store goes back online, all PlayStation Network customers can select two PlayStation 3 games from the following list to keep forever:

Dead Nation
inFAMOUS
LittleBigPlanet
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD + Fury

PSP owners can select two of the following titles:

LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
ModNation Racers
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation

I'm definitely getting Dead Nation. I can't decide between InFamous and Little Big Planet... recommendations guys?

super stardust, 250mb | 250mb patch
ratchet and clank , ~3.5gb
wipeoutHD, ~1.8gb

I still own a working 1st Gen xbox360 (Xenon board, no HDMI), though I have since upgraded.

1) Keep it well ventilated. Give it at least 30 cm of space in all directions. Never put it into a cabinet, and never put it on a carpet. Hard surfaces only.
2) Try not to use it when the room you're in is over 80°F (26.6C), this will significantly reduce the cooling capacity (hotter intake, less efficient venting).
3) Don't leave it running if you can avoid it, let it take breaks and cool back down to ambient.
4) Ideally, horizontal is better (superior cool-air intake), but if you do that, again, make sure it is on a hard surface. Anything else will work as an insulator. If you want to keep it extra cool, put it on a wire baking rack, or a laptop cooling-fan rack.

Giving it room to breathe is really the only key. You can't stop the dvd drive from failing though...

What Bill said. Apparently the only way to backup to a PC is through the backup tool inside the PS3... which you need to have it running... on the original console since placing the hdd on another console requieres reformating the disc.

At this moment I don't care about the console... I just want my save files so I can import them to a new one. Ugh.

If you have the Phat version: well good news then, as opposed to the bad.. A YLOD is pretty easy to fix (read temporarily) so getting your save games is highly possible.

Whether it's permanently fixable is still a question mark as I'm still experimenting on that. I'm going to fix my friend's YLOD PS3 for the 3rd time now so it seems the issue persists. I was thinking of ordering a different heat sink from the same model to see if that will help.

I don't know if you're a little tech-savvy and willing to try and fix it yourself. The things you'd need to do that are a philips screw driver, a torx, a heat gun, some isopropyl alcohol, some thermal paste, possibly some no-clean lead-free solder flux (pen form) and finally gilksy's guide to fixing YLOD.

The alternative would be finding someone near you experienced in fixing this against payment.

Good luck!

I did find a guide that uses those tools you just recommended Killa-Eyez. Unfortunately I don't have neither the experience nor confidence to try it myself. A co-worker said he may be able to do it, but since he has never opened a PS3 before he said he wasn't conficent either.

On other news, I found a place that can fix it and will charge me about 100 dollar (ugh). If I didn't want the save files I would say screw it... but since its a BC unit... all, and I mean ALL, my PS1, PS2 and PS3 saves are in there... so I need to get them. It hurts to pay that much (specially since a new unit is 300~350 depending on the hdd) but the save files are a must...

I also heard the solution isn't permanent, so I'm considering getting a Slim after I manage to back up the files. Plus I'm going to take Marik's route and getting PlayStation Plus to be on the safe side.

Well... the guide requieres you to heat several parts of the motherboard. I think that screwing that part equals killing it for good.

Killa-Eyez
Thu, 07-21-2011, 05:42 AM
I've done it the first time without any experience in fixing PS3's. I do have some technical background and my friend didn't have anything to lose, it was broken anyway. The heating procedure is only to get the solder hot enough, the components can withstand that. It is of the outmost importance you do not move it when reflowing or afterwards for another 10 to 15 min. If you do, parts might shift again or even come off. It's all in the guide. If you follow it there's no problem.

RyougaZell
Thu, 07-21-2011, 08:21 AM
The only co-worker I know that had a technical background didn't seem confident enough so I ended leaving the PS3 at the repair shop I found. They told me to phone today after 16:00 to check on it. I plan to backup immediately and use it again until it breaks (with periodical backups). Afterwards I may end up buying a slim.

Anyway, thanks for the inputs Killa-Eyez!

The 1st thing I wanted to do was to Backup the disc in case it died on me again, but it seems I need to format my external HDD to FAT32 firsthand... yet that would mean I need to back up around 300~400GB first... and there is no way in hell I will do so.

To make things easier for PlayStation Plus subscribers, we’ve added the option to automate two existing features. The [Automatic Download] feature will now be called [Automatic Update] as a result of these new options.

A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data. Under (Game), select the game for which you want to automatically upload saved data, and then press the Triangle button.

Also, Trophies will now sync automatically at the timing of Auto Download.
