No mod has intervened yet and everyone already thinks you're a moronic 13 year old.
Updates today:
1 interesting one about Widescreen display
1 neat one featuring a Donkey Kong theme. Sounds weird.

Although we do now have the games starting line up.
That`s not the starting line up, it was the one at E for all event, Kirby, Zelda and the Ice Climbers can`t be unlockables, Sonic SHOULD be an unlockable, there is not enough space for the other characters.

Who knows, maybe there will be two character selection screens.
Ryllharu
Fri, 12-07-2007, 08:33 PM
Wasn't that character select screen the one Nintendo used for the sneak preview of sorts they had with a bunch of players from the press and Melee tournaments? The one where all the youtube videos of Sonic and the other Final Smashes came from.
Either way, I highly doubt that is the final build.

Of course it isn't the final roster.
I love how Sakurai references the "proliferation of the Internet" in this update. I love his writing style so much.

Pikmin & Olimar
Goodness! Captain Olimar joins the fray with five colors of Pikmin in tow! He plucks Pikmin from the ground and they fight as his allies.
Without Pikmin, Olimar can’t even do a Smash Attack. And the short-lived Pikmin tend to scatter. Theirs is a fated symbiotic relationship.

Ryllharu
Wed, 01-09-2008, 04:57 PM
Well, I doubt he will be a big choice for tournament play, but he can't be too far from any other "build-up" characters in other fighting games. Think of something like Zappa from Guilty Gear.
Certain Actions bring out more of the Pikmin, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the smash attacks were stronger than the average character with all 5 out.

Ryllharu
Wed, 01-16-2008, 07:58 PM
OoT Zelda was blond, and correspondingly, Sheik is too.
Sheik doesn’t appear in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but we based her model on a design that was drafted up during the development of that game.
Her design is based off a mockup they were playing around with when they were making TP. So Brawl Zelda comes from two different worlds, fits perfectly with Legend of Zelda traditions.
I'd still prefer if they had split the two characters...but Zelda users need some way to compete with Zero Suit Samus' speed.

Seems quite a few things come as a surprise to us. For me, it's the fact that Metaknight, despite seeming the same mass as Kirby, is lighter even with mask, cape, and sword.
darkmetal505
Fri, 01-25-2008, 07:57 PM
Weight = resistance against knockback in the horizontal distance. This is why Samus had a such a good crouch cancel. It didn't affect the way the characters jumped or anything.
The ability to juggle a character vertically was based on the character's "fast fall." That is why Falco, Fox, and Captain Falcon are "easier" to combo and also why they are able to pull of those ridiculous combos.

Black Bull, and if the other leaked stuff is real, this is pretty much fake ( noooh mewtwo), since zelda and sheik are supposed to be on the same icon together.

Toon Link vs. Gannondorf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeeIYr5wW78)
Disappointing thing is that both of them look like clones of Young link and Captain Falcon, respectively. Awesome thing is the level and the music and also the new designs I guess.

I'm trying reallllllly hard not to be annoyed by Wolf's inclusion.
I think it only seems a little underwhelming because of the way all the new characters were introduced to us. If I had been told that Wolf and Lucario were being introduced to the game way back when it was announced, I wouldn't have even cared. And then if I was told about the 10 new characters, including Snake and Sonic, that were gonna be in it, I would have shorted out.
This way it's just kinda: "OH SHIT! SNAKE! SONIC, WOW....OLIMAR...Lu..cario...Oh, I guess Star Wolf is in this too...?"
I'm happy though. Still can't wait.

Explain? Wolf is a little disappointing, but what more could you want/ask for?

Considering the popularity of fox/falco, it might encourage a bit more diversification to include another character that handles similarly. However, I hear Wolf's final smash is also the landmaster tank, and that's just wrong.

Personally I'm disappointed with this roster. I don't mind the characters they chose, I don't even mind that theres only 35, what I do care about though is that so many of the characters are too similar to each other, or even clones! If they could only make 35 characters in the time they had, fine, but make it a unique 35, don't put in a stronger but slower version of a certain character.
The 3 Star Fox characters I'm okay with, I'm surprised that Wolf got in over say someone like Krystal since Sakurai mentioned that they would like more female characters, but I don't really mind. What I do care about though is that all three characters are pretty much the same... Why does Falco have the same final smash as Fox? Didn't he say he hated the Land Master? And if Wolf's final smash is indeed yet another Land Master, thats just plain laziness on Sakurai's part.
Toon Link is the pretty much the same as Young Link in Melee? Why couldn't they make him a new character with Wind Waker items such as the Skull Hammer or the Deku Leaf? And Gannondorf still being a clone of Captain Falcon? Jesus, at least let him use his sword.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm still very excited to get this game, you got online play, a very good looking adventure mode, better graphics, nice looking levels and a whole lot of neat and fun additions. And although there are still some interesting characters added to the roster such as Sonic, Snake, Meta Knight and a few others, I can't help but feel disappointed from what I originally expected.

only 35
There's something fundamentally wrong about complaining about this number. I think once you start playing through the game with each and every one of these guys, you'll realize just how large that number is. This isn't M.U.G.E.N., any roster higher than 40 is just unrealistic. In any case, there are 36 characters since Zero Suit Samus can be selected from the selection screen by holding R. This was recently confirmed.
Besides that, I do understand your gripe about the clones. But out of the 36, only 6 are "clones". That's 30 unique characters, 10 of which are new additions. And even the word "clone" is a loose term since the characters share fundamental similarities, and little beyond that (barring Fox's trio).
36 characters
26 old guys - perfectly acceptable in Melee
10 new additions - including Sonic and Snake
6 clones - 4 of which are returning from Melee; so it's hardly unexpected
Once you stop saying "only" this and that, the roster is pretty fucking beefy, and I can't see much wrong with it. Wolf and Toon Link were a bit of a letdown, but again, it's all in how the information was presented to us.

Well, I admit I phrased that pretty poorly, 36 in fact is a very large roster for a fighting game, but I was expecting around 35 clone free characters.
Now I'm not saying the roster is bad, not at all, thinking about it now my expectations may have just been unrealistic from the getgo, I may have just been excited by seeing the majority of the characters released fairly early, and expected a lot more new characters in the game.
However, Toon Link, Gannondorf and Wolf, I think those 3 are my biggest disappointments. In fact, if all 3 of those characters had a unique move set, I think I would like this roster, and thinking about that, I'm probably just overreacting about this if thats all it would take to change my opinion.
Overall I still am a little disappointed about the roster, but rethinking it, it's not as bad as I first thought, and like most games, I should reserve my judgment until I actually play it.

Yeah, you know I really won't defend the Wolf and Toon Link thing. It is kinda disappointing. I just think the differences will stand out great enough to make it not matter.

Lol what, tekken 6 has 40 chars, and soul calibur 3 had 42 chars..... and these are all fighting games with very big moves lists and such, yet brawl with its miniscule moves list per char couldnt have more then 35.
You could come up with an excuse like, those are deep fighters or whatever, but a game like narutimate hero accel 2 has 62 chars, how they do it? they dont do rediculous stuff like make big cuts from the roster ( except for joke and guest chars).

In smash bros, there are far more things to worry about than just the move list.

Yeah, this was similar to my response. Smash Brothers is unique and deep enough in quality to not warrant having 50 throw-away characters.
I mean, the first game only had 12, and it's still pretty amazing. Brawl has 36 characters, plus all the other insane shit Sakurai stuffed in there.
The stage editor gives the game literally unlimited replay value. And you're complaining because you wanted more characters? Most guys only main with 1 or 2 to begin with. What do you need with 50 others?

Fwd, Back, Fwd, Half-circle forward = Dizzy's Gamma Ray! The only complicated inputted attack I will never forget. (Also one of the few worth the complicated move if your timing was good.)
Smash has never been about the inputs, or so much the characters. It's supposed to be a fun fighter that's easy for anyone to get into. Sure, there's all the "advanced" techniques (read: exploited glitches) and insane frame analysis like any hardcore 2D fighter has, but at it's core the only requirement of Smash was timing. Or...you could just C-stick if you were new or lazy.
I always saw Smash Bros. as a series where the ITEMS were the most fun part. What other major fighting franchise incorporated items? There were also so many of them. Granted, purists (read: tourneyfags) will turn off all the items and demand the ultra-bland arenas, but the appeal for me was always the totally chaotic feel of a free-for-all match with all items on and the item rate set to "excessive."
It didn't matter if Guy-down-the-hall was insane at recoveries, you just hit him in the face with a barrel and won the match when it somehow exploded.
Call it luck, call me a bad player for never bothering to learn wavedashing, I was only in it for the fun.
-------------------------------------
At least now the tourneyfags will have to at least leave the Final Smash on. Even they are not immune to its shiny luster, overpowered attacks and amusing animations (in some cases).

I've got nothing against itemless final destination matches because, let's face it, it IS a little more competitive to minimize the randomness of a match. I usually like to keep items low, but I never had anything against the crazier stages like poke floats. I just like matches where players can utilize pure skill that they've developed through experience.
Glitch exploits are retarded, and developing your skills primarily off of training mode using cheap tricks people post in the smashboards forum is dumb and alienating to your friends.

I agree, my friends and I typically play with a reduced number of items (the pill capsules, Homerun bats, food, the little freeze block, pokeballs, beam sword, and few others) with the dispersal rate lowered. Then either the Temple, Poke Stadium, or the starfox level (forget the name of the ship).
But I've always enjoyed the occasional item-heavy match at the Mushroom Castle.

I played Melee with the so called "cheap tricks." I found more than often that people were eager to learn them rather than alienate me.
Some chain throws are included, intentional or not. I saw a video of a King Dee Dee down throw Ike across the stage and then just edge guard really well. Could have been a result of bad DI though.
My only beef is that L-cancelling seems to be gotten rid of. So certain jabs or pokes will now result in a shield grab or similar counter. Guess it's up to the player to be extra tricky or careful. It also puts more of an emphasis on special moves and learning the blockstun of different moves.
From the videos I've seen on youtube, it seems like items just dominate the playing field. It was really hard to follow what was happening sometimes. I like the occasional item bash, but if I want to fight somebody straight up, I would much rather play minus items (except Final Smashes, because those look tasty).

Holy shit. There are some of the serious hardcore 2D-fighter techniques in there. These are the kinds of things we see in some of the SF games, Guilty Gear, Melty Blood, and even Virtua Fighter. Yes, I know VF is a 3D, but its one of the most technical fighters period, and Smash shares Ukemi with it among a few others.
darkmetal505
Mon, 02-11-2008, 08:16 PM
Ukemi is a mixture of teching and DI. Essentially if you air dodge after an attack (preferably opposite the direction of the blow) you cancel the momentum significantly.
Perfect shielding was insanely hard to do in Melee even with awesome reflexes, let's see how it pans out in Brawl.
Small jump or short hop was already vital in the SSB64 and Melee if you wanted to play competitively. It led to the SHFFL of aerials and such. Good thing they pointed it out because it is really important.

Ah, I seemed to have misread smash dojo.
"When a blow sends you flying, tap the shield button just before you come into contact with the ground, wall, or ceiling. You’ll bound off the surface with a little hop and, like a judo master, cancel any excess momentum that would have otherwise kept you careening around wildly."
Yea, Ukemi is essentially teching but you also have to DI towards the ground, wall, or ceiling, otherwise you'll blow right past it.
Hopefully you can still do stuff like this though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QElifBiVv60
What I was talking about was the insane DI ability. I read on smashboards that if you DI towards the stage while air dodging after a blow that would kill you otherwise, it significantly reduces knockback.
edit:
the insane DI ability was debunked because due to the fact that attacks get weaker when repeated.

Zelda was pathetically underpowered in Melee. As a slow character, she should have hit with a decent amount of damage, but she was pretty much equivalent to Peach (but Peach is of course, WAY faster). That's why the overwhelming number of Zelda users always switched to Shiek. Slightly less damage than Zelda, but maybe triple the attack rate.
However, when Zelda was introduced on the Brawl site, Sakurai implied that it might no longer be the case. I speculated from that they added a significant punch to Zelda's damage.
Her movement capabilities are not that good, but her magic adds power to her physical attacks. There’s a reason why her hands and feet glow, after all.
As a casual player and a Zelda user, I certainly hope it's not just you. Maybe someone playing it now can say for sure. When it comes out here, I'll let you know otherwise.

First of all, there are no established "tourneyfags" for Brawl, yet- only those developed through Melee. And why is it so disgusting to play the game to see if the strategies of old that worked for some can still be found? Also, some glitches and the like for new games are usually discovered strictly by accident.
Besides, like Xan said in his post, there's nothing gamebreaking. You really only ought to be complaining if, say, it was discovered that there was a way to make every smash attack an instant KO in every instance.

What I don't fully understand is why people dislike it when people play Melee competitively. It has literally no affect on their lives and how they play whatsoever. If I want to play Melee/Brawl with items and never do a single advanced move, then by all means I would do that, but I sure as hell wouldn't start cheering when I find out wavedashing and L-cancelling are removed. It obviously never had any bearing on how I played in the first place, so why would I care whether it was in or out? Similarly, I wouldn't start complaining when new techniques are discovered because I would never use them anyway.
Brawl definitely won't match the speed of Melee, which is one of the things I found really fun and made it into the competitive game it became. Granted some of these new techniques are ridiculous, but the ones that will help Brawl approach Melee's speed, I will gladly accept.

First of all, there are no established "tourneyfags" for Brawl, yet- only those developed through Melee. And why is it so disgusting to play the game to see if the strategies of old that worked for some can still be found? Also, some glitches and the like for new games are usually discovered strictly by accident. You didn't hear the cry of relief from them when Final Destination was listed on the site?
I also assume they will carry over many of the same stage restrictions, and plenty new. Oh, New Pork City has a monster that can instant-kill out? Out. (Despite you largely knowing where it is, and thus making it a strategy to push your enemy into it). The characters not allowed will undoubtedly change, with all the balancing, but it's only a matter of time.
@darkmetal: It's not Melee, it's any fighting game. There's always a select few to even just that one guy who sucks all the fun out of every fighting game. Tekken? You can't use Eddie (okay, I will give them that one, since most Tekken games, I don't know about the newer ones, have no counter system). How about Guilty Gear? Can't use Instant Kills (despite how much skill is required to not miss, and the huge disadvantage if you do). Can't use EX modes, at all (despite damage not really being affected, only move lists). Soul Caliber? Can't use several stages, and a few characters.
All in the name of "playing competitively." It's a fighting game, a genre designed for the arcades and competitive play. There's always going to be some advantage or another. You can get around the majority of them if you really are as good as you claim to be.

Nop, you can make your own stages...
Here`s an idea, we don`t whine about the way other people play the game, the game is customizable for a reason, there is an item off/on option for a reason, stage select for a reason, character select screen for a reason, personal preferences, let`s support them.

Talking about stages, now? Again, no one is degrading the quality of the game by not allowing you, personally, to play in any stages. Honestly, if you disapprove of that "Final Destination only" rule in whatever tourney you attend that much, just start your own tournament with your own rules.
Also, I can only speak for Guilty Gear, but the reason those items you listed are (except for IKs, since anything console-only are banned) prohibited is because tourneys (for any fighting game) are generally ARCADE-version. Better case for EX mode would be that it's horrendously balanced- only few EX characters are worth using (EX Testament is bordering broken with insta-Warrant) and the rest are crap (EX Johnny? lol where's your damage options?).

I would have to agree with Ryllharu, but only for the Super Smash Bros. series. For games like Tekken and Soul caliber, they seem to be meant to be played that competitively. But for such a game as Brawl, it just doesn't strike me as one that people should be fretting over for finding exploits. Its more of a goofy game with whacky scenarios and to me it feels that it should be played simply for the fun of it.
Not that I would stop other people from wasting their valuable time trying to find techniques such as wave-dashing, they can do what they want. But I'd be a little discouraged from playing with a group of people who are constantly on the look-out for new techniques to instant KO.

I think finding exploits and glitches are completely incidental. There's nothing inherently wrong with that since I don't think people actually spend time trying to find some of that stuff. Maybe I'm just optimistic.
As for the BS rules that people make up, I'd just try to ignore them. Play with people you know you'll have fun with and do it by your own rules.

Actually, looking at the exploit vids that Xan posted, the nature of quite a few of those glitches are "goofy" and "whacky," so it fits in line with how you describe Brawl. Afterall, you can't have a fun PvP game without ever once shouting out "THAT'S BULLSHIT!" and having a fine laugh over it.

I will gladly concede that most of the Brawl glitches are just for fun, but I can't help but see that in those videos, the people doing them were hunting for competitive exploits (except maybe the Jumbo Jiggly, which certainly happened by accident). Someone was looking for an alternative to wavedashing, which we all knew was gone (not that I ever even bothered to learn it, I only play with friends).

Picked mine up midnight Sunday morning (before the DST change) and played it for a solid twelve hours today. Got plenty more of unlocking to do, but I'm extremely pleased with the results.
- Added some real power to Zelda, now it more than makes up for her somewhat pokey speed, and Sheik got a good rounding too. I don't remember her being able to cling to walls Ninja Gaiden style in Melee, but it's certainly welcome here.
- Zero Suit Samus is a nice mix of Sheik and with a little bit of Zelda. Really floaty at times, zips around at others, and some nice range on her side and up smashes. Should be a good mix for me.
- Olimar eludes me. I can't figure out exactly how he works.
- Metaknight is SICK. Not my type, but I know plenty of people who will find him right up their alley.
I'm sure plenty of people have said it, but Final Smashes really do change the entire mechanics of a brawl. The camera even focuses right on it, and then everyone makes a mad dash towards it and things get really nasty. That, and there's tons of other things to do, and Subspace Emissary adds even more to an already full and practically flawless game.

I got the game at the midnight release. Unlocked Sonic after about 8-9 hours and then passed out. Just woke up so it's time to go play some more.
I am liking Ike a lot, his side smashes are totally broken because of the ridiculous range on them and his Final Smash is eye candy.
I have very few complaints with the game because it's pretty well rounded. I'm just annoy that they remove characters like Roy and Mewtwo but then go and add Lucario and Star Wolf. Wolf is pretty much the same as fox, hell one of fox costume looks exactly like wolf and Lucario is just mewtwo with two different moves so i don't see why they couldn't include all of the old characters since they are really just adding newer clones.
Ganon still doesn't have his own set of moves since they all still work exactly the same as cap falcon.

well, i haven't done much reading up on Brawl, but I went to play it at a friend's house yesterday, and I was really pretty disappointed in something that you all who have been fervently following it are probably going to say, "What's the big deal about?"
The buttons and control stick are the only inputs? Fucking weak.
The game plays well and all, and it looks nicer and even the loading speeds are surprisingly good for a supposedly "fully loaded disc".
But I can't help but think something is wrong when I play this game and think to myself, "I wish I was playing Rampage..."
One step forward, two steps back.
It's Melee, but with Supers, a few tweaks to some old characters, a few fun new ones (I enjoy Wario and Meta Knight to an unhealthy degree), new stages, a few new items (the Smash ball and those rockets being great ones), and better graphics and a more indepth, movie heavy "campaign" mode. Oh, and some more flexibility with the rules.
I'm very much reminded of Halo 3, where there was a huge fan base and a great wave of anxiousness leading up to the launch date. Tons of fanboyist legions led the dimwitted round of applause that met it. But it was really just Halo 2 with a few new bells and whistles and looking nicer on your screen.
Sure, they made it better. It's hard to fuck up something as fun as Smash, and with the time they've had, what they've brought us is, in my eyes, the bare bones minimum they could have done to re-sell a re-named version of Melee 2.0.
I'm not saying it's not fun, because it's tons of fun. It's still a good game. It doesn't meet my expectations though, because apparently the developers couldn't even get their hands on a Wii to know what system they were making it for. It's not a Wii game. It's a Gamecube game packaged to be played on the Wii.
Or maybe I'm getting all upset over nothing because there's a setting we've yet to unlock that lets you use the Wii's motion sensors for input?

Shaking the Wiimote lets you do smash attacks. There, you've got your "Wii experience". I'm sticking to using my Wavebird.
The rest of what you're saying is pretty dumb. Just as Melee was Smash 2.0, Brawl is Melee 2.0. It's called a sequel.
the custom level editor alone is worth the upgrade.
My dream of making a stage consisting of nothing but a big 'ol ladder down the middle of a massive room was stomped upon by the game's insistence that I have a "floor".
I stuck 4 blocks down at the bottom to satisfy the requirement, but still...not quite the same :(.

Are you using Zelda's teleport? I only failed that mission once when I teleported into the large spike above one of the bridges. As long as you know where you're going and aim the teleport properly, it should be fairly easy.
You can't jump your way up, Zelda is far too floaty and slow for that. By the time she lands from a jump you'll be at the bottom of the screen. Effective movement with Zelda is always about teleporting.

I transformed into Sheik for that event, if you transform as soon as it slows down for a bit, you can get back in time, after that it's fairly easy.
What I'm getting annoyed at myself is that killing 10 Cruel guys challenge. In my many tries I killed 9 twice, 8 three times, and 7 three times with Kirby, after that I just turned it off, always seems like when I need one or two more rocks I blow it. Frustrating.
As for the characters, personally I think Olimar is fairly good, all of his smash attacks have long range, and work very well together, his front+b can dish out damage pretty fast, and his grab and up+b have good range as well. Snake I find good too, although at the start he can be a little hard to use as you got to get use to his smash attacks, and you got to work on the timing of detonating the mines. As for R.O.B. I haven't really played him that much, so I can't really judge.

I know how to play with them rather well as a matter of fact which is exactly why I'm bashing them. I even play with Olimar quite often but I still say it would have been better if they were replaced with other characters. I wouldn't consider myself to be good at Smash if I couldn't play well with every character, unplayable or not.
Speaking of mains for me there are four tiers in smash. Marth, Ike&Link, Lucario&Zelda and everyone else.

Funny, I've become embarrassingly bad with Sheik in Brawl but I'm now really good with Zelda. I'm really feeling the changes they made to those two.
Does no one else like Lucas as much as I do??

i like lucas. his moves are just cooler like they have an anime like fighting style to them. and sheik<zelda. If Snake=america and america=awesome then Snake=awesome.
honestly though i think all the characters are fairly balanced. When i found the tournament side of melee it was fun for a bit but it eventually dulled the game for me. It seemed like all of the casuals that i would play with my friends turned into very safe tournament play. it wasnt fun after awhile. it got annoying to see marth fox falco and shiek in every other fight( i mained mario and fox btw). Getting to the point, i think im going to enjoy this game items and all for awhile before i decide to go and break the game with tournament style play. The special brawl is so pliable. You can mix and match so many different brawls that it might almost turn out to be like the Wii equivallent of halo 3.

Current Collection Status:
332 trophies
471 stickers
I read somewhere that there's about 540 trophies total, and 700 stickers... man this will take a while.
Also, I'd have to say....by far the coolest trophy I have is Zero Suit Samus's all-star trophy. I was running through the mode as Power Suit Samus but then the second from the last battle I got a smash ball that made me lose my suit, and it stayed off for the final match.

You know I've been watching fights of this game through some videos on MLG pros website, and I have to say....it's not bad. I honestly don't like sonic though. Way to fast, way to sensitive. And not nearly enough stuff to fight with. I do agree with Assert that Ike is one of the best. Although I don't like how they replaced Roy, he is a good replacement. Very strong. Attacks are kind of slow, but very strong. I heard Snake is only good if you know how to actually use his all of his weaponry. I mean all of it. Is lucario even decent? I mean Mewtwo was kind of a let down from the last game, but is his replacement any better?

Eh, forget my original idea, since it was shot down the drain.
