My reasoning, the 4th faked his death to get out of duties as hokage and start the Akatsuki. The reason he sealed Naruto was so he knew where the strongest demon was at all times while he focussed on getting the others. Yup Yup, i'm a genius I know. Now hurry and flame my theory;)

Just kidding, but this anticipated plot is seriously old, and I wouldn't be surprised if Kishimoto did it, because of the rumors all around the internet. They never even showed the actual death of the 4th Hokage, and we have to go through all this trouble of finding out who he is. Apparently, the animators of Naruto think it's okay to animate about 100 episodes of fillers, when submitting 5 minutes of the 4th Hokage's death would compensate (and a lot cheaper) for the whole filler arc.
