Another series by Kyoto Animation. I heard of this anime when I happened to see the opening on youtube... and I found it irresistably cute and awesome, maybe even Haruhi ED awesome. I had to watch it over and over.

Summary

Portrays the lives of several school girls attending a Japanese high school with a very loose humor tone. The main heroine is Konata Izumi, an athletic and intelligent girl who, despite these attributes, is not in a sports club, and her grades remain low. Her laziness at school is due to her love for anime and video games, and is not interested in much else. The serialization began with the four main characters in their first year of high school: Konata Izumi, Kagami Hiiragi, Tsukasa Hiiragi, and Miyuki Takara. As the story progresses, they move onto their second and third year.

My thoughts after EP1, there's only 1 word to describe it - MOE, and lots of it. I don't care if it's just some shallow cute moe comedy, I'm so watching this XD

Haha, I read like the 4 chapters that're scanlated, and I must say it's quite silly. Dl'ing.

Edit: haha, it really is Moe. They extended some of the 4 panel stories quite a bit in the anime.

Yea, I was totally unaware of it until I read some people talking about it in lurk yesterday. It's not slapstick comedy, its more like a melancholic, quiet, cute and uh, Moe series! It's quite captivating in that sense.

I believe there is a lot of hype for this series because of KyoAni (Kanon, Haruhi, etc) and Aya Hirano (Haruhi's seiyuu).
I tried to watch a trailer on youtube and had to close it after merely 2 seconds... ouch. Personal dissapointment.

No doubt many will find it good, but just not my type of series. Even if KyoAni is behind it. I'll wait for their next project finishing Lucky Star, that is Clannad.

Tastes like... the impression of Azumanga coated in thick icing, then dipped in sugar.

First saw the opening on youtube, then read the first four manga chapters, and now, today, I saw the first episode.

Not much else to add other than: chocolate rolls and/or cream puffs should be gripped firmly at the opposite end of where you're eating it to prevent leakage.

Addendum: Upon watching the episode, again, I'd have to say that the Lucky Channel bit at the end was probably my favorite part, what with the host breaking character, and all.

The episode was somewhat funny in a relaxing kind of way. It's just enough to keep me interested and watch the next episode. This certainly is a moe series, hahaha.

I'd say the highlights of this episode were the main character accusing her friend of being moe (Haruhi reference), the Street Fighter reference, the Lucky Channel bit, and the ending with the karaoke. Damn, her singing was bloody hilarious, haha.

I'm probably going crazy, but the eyes on the main character keeps cracking me up. Something is most definitely wrong with me...

Moe indeed...

I guess I'm not really into pure moe things, because I thought the first episode was deadly boring. I very much doubt I'll be watching this series in the future. While it was cute and all, there was little humour and even less story (and obviously no action and such things), so I don't think it has any of the major elements I'm looking for. I thoroughly enjoyed Ichigo Mashimaro, and was expecting this to be something like it, but alas no.

This is not the type of series I like watching, but it has a couple of scenes that are OK to watch here and there, so I'll watch a couple of episodes when I bored and got nothing else to watch.

The OP was really good though, I'll listen to it plenty.

Indeed. I was going to post the very same thing here: It's easy to see where Konata got her otaku genes from.

This series has validated the hype it had. And I was ready to drop this after the first couple of episodes... I hope it's the series that changed, not me, though... >_>

Ryllharu
Wed, 05-30-2007, 01:25 PM
The thing about Lucky Star is that there is zero substance to the series. It's all slice of life and otaku gags. In Azumanga Daioh, it was exactly the same, but the girls had some growth over the course of three years. Here, we meet them when they are already either 16 or 17. Each of the girls has been carefully crafted to get all of the moe possible into a single being. In this episode, Konata even pointed out another one when they were discussing Kagami's haircut "Bipolar girls hafta have twin pigtails!"

Konata: Clearly loli, but has the absurdly long (not to mention blue) hair. Otaku, good at sports, lazy and an otaku (which means she's meant to sympathize with other otaku, like the ones watching), and voiced by Aya Hirano of all seiyuu.

Kagami: Aforementioned twintails, tsundere, can't cook, worries about her weight, smart, purple hair, she's the straight "man" in her relationship with Konata.

Tsukasa: Cute, sweet, great cook, absentminded, sleeps in, kinda stupid, generally incompetent (but in the cutest way possible each time).

Miyuki: I don't even really need to get into detail, but she wears glasses, has perfect proportions (in a totally un-asian way), has pink hair, is very absentminded, and as Konata has stated, every "fault" she possesses really increases her moe.

Between the four of them, I don't think there is a single moe character stereotype missing.

There's little else to attract anyone to this series, but after watching a few episodes, and you resist the urge to yell "Kawaii" aloud. After that, you're hooked. Toss in the sickeningly sweet/totally evil Akira in Lucky Channel and the OP/ED's, and you've got the full addictive package.

animus
Wed, 05-30-2007, 03:10 PM
I don't know if you could go far as to say Kona-chan and Kagami are in a "relationship", but yea she's always picking fights, and it's hilarious. Aya Hirano's work on Kona-chan couldn't be better in my opinion, the voice just fits all too well with her character. Just to add some snippets that add to their moe, Kona works at a cosplay cafe. Kagami is quite the glutton and also extremely worried about weight, and Miyuki hates the dentist. There's a ton more, and people should point 'em out! At first, I was seriously giving second thoughts to this anime after watching the OP before the episodes came out. I was skeptical, but after watching it, it was different than what I imagined it to be, and I'm having a blast sticking with it.

Well, I can't really technically say how and why people are attracted to those moe traits you listed, but the first couple of episodes had little else than that distilled moe essence, and I found them boring. After that more and more humour and comedy appeared and now I think it a good series all in all. So, I wouldn't say it's all moe and nothing else. Comedy is also substance, even if much of it is just parody and irony.

Ryllharu

I don't know if you could go far as to say Kona-chan and Kagami are in a "relationship"
I meant a comedian "relationship" and couldn't think of a better way to put it. The two of them form what is almost a Manzai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manzai) duo. Just without Kagami hitting Konata, probably because Kagami knows Konata will feel her up like she's been doing the last couple of episodes.

Konata really is her father's child...

but the first couple of episodes had little else than that distilled moe essence, and I found them boring. After that more and more humour and comedy appeared and now I think it a good series all in all.
It's exactly like I said, you just don't think you're watching it for that reason. What other humor is there in the scenes with Tsukasa struggling to figure out her cell phone, or playing the recorder worse than a 3rd grader? Same for Kagami as the tsundere character and Miyuki as the sheltered ojou character (Miyuki squinting without her glasses, even Konata commented on that one). Konata...she's as addicted to it as the audience is supposed to be.

Face it, you're watching it for the moe, and finding excuses to say that's not the reason.
:p

@Ryll - Haha, yeah I guess you should, but no one died.

I do agree that the main reason (and the only reason for most) to watch this is its MOE! factor, but I also say that it does have some decent comedy and parody entertainment in it. However, I doubt anyone who isnt an otaku (or damn right near being one) would enjoy this series.

I personally watch it for the moe. Nothing less, nothing more. Oh wait, theres Hirano Aya, but thats also moe... or is it...?

kooshi
Tue, 06-05-2007, 12:57 AM
While I try to watch this series just for the comedy factor, I do have to admit that the moe adds to it. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't be laughing as much at, for example, Tsukasa's cell phone and recorder scenes. I certainly do enjoy the Konata/Kagami duo the most in this series; some stuff is absolutely hilarious. Ahh, and Lucky Channel, it's good to finish off an episode with insanity, hahaha.
However, for me, I'm rather annoyed with Miyuki. I just feel that they try too hard on her character.

Episode 9 - a.f.k. (http://a.scarywater.net/afk/%5Ba.f.k.%5D%20Lucky%20Star%20-%2009.avi.torrent)

Nothing really stood out for me in this episode other than the Tsukasa studying sections (Fight oh! Tsukasa-chan) and the Miyuki eyedrops. It's huge in Japan, but I suppose they pointed out how completely vague blood type horoscopes are. Even though most of the traits didn't fit at all, the girls twisted them around to make them fit.

What really stood out was Lucky Channel. Akira was in top form this time. Professing how to properly make "candid" poses for photos, had me smiling, but when she pulled her ashtray out of nowhere and hit him right in the face with it...and from the previous segment where she slammed Miyuki, you know it's hers too.

For me, I don't think that anything stood out in this episode, other than the Lucky Channel bit. Even though a lot of fun and interesting points were brought out (ie. as Ryllharu already pointed out, the blood type horoscopes), it just didn't seem to entertain me as all of the things they mentioned were already discussed deeply amongst me and some of my friends.

Well, I'm pretty much very tired now, so I think I babbled something weird again.

I was kind of surprised to see two of the girls from the OP in the anime. To be honest, what really surprised me was that they weren't voiced by the same old lady that does all the other side characters. It's no wonder we haven't seen them before, they're in Kagami's class, where she obviously never spends time.

I'm guessing from the profile that Yui's-neesan's little sister is the redhead from the OP. Maybe we'll see a lot more of the girls in the OP come spring semester.

Is Yui good at being a cop, or totally worthless? That segment made it very confusing.

Heh. The sensei character is as traditional as it can be. In how many animes exactly have we seen female teachers having a crisis of singleness? Too many to count.

It seems like Konata's old man is getting screen time steadily. That's jolly good. You just never know what that weido is going to do next. Even Konata herself looks pretty normal in comparison... Though it's amusing how she treats him as if there was nothing out of ordinary, so that alone raises her oddity factor, naturally.

In Japan it seems to be mainly for kids and lovers, especially young couples.

Makes sense seeing how only about 1% of the population are Christians, so it having quite a bit more limited meaning among the general population is natural.

a.f.k. does seem to be focusing on Zetsubo Sensei instead. I checked out Guerrand's version of 17 and 18, and they're pretty good, font color is an annoying red, but the translation seems good. There's not really any karaoke either, but we all know the lyrics by now.

If you can't wait, give them a try. You can find it on Tokyotosho or Baka-updates. I'd include the links, but the eps 17 one wasn't working for me.

Konata's dad keeps rocking. That man never lets you down.

Also, they seem to give pretty much screen time to Yutaka and her friends. I guess to get more variety. It has been 19 episodes already, after all, and to be honest the settings in this series are quite limited by default.

I found this mention about Lucky Star in an anime blog.
it’s completely believable that they are a group of friends that appreciate each other’s company. I believe part of what makes this achievable is the ease and fluidity in which the characters are set up
When I read that, the reason I like Lucky Star so much suddenly all clicked into place.

The strange thing about Lucky Star is that the character's relationships with each other seem utterly natural. More so than any other school slice of life series, Azumanga Diaoh included. In Azumanga, you never really had a sense that the girls had individual personalities, they were just always doing things together, and they only had a few sparse things to distinguish from each other. Yomi wanted to diet, Sasaki liked cute things, Osaka was an airhead, etc. You never really seemed to get a sense of anything else about them. There was a exaggerated personality trait for each girl, but that's all they really were. Then they applied random other wacky characters (Kimura) and put them in fairly awkward and occasionally hard to believe situations for "slice-of-life." It certainly makes for a more lasting impression, but over time, its shock factor no longer shown as brightly in my memories.

In Lucky Star, they are all compressed collections of moe traits, but that's only to drag the viewers in. If you move all the moe aside, we get a very clear picture of each of the girls (except Miyuki) because we see them at home, by themselves, and all they ever do is talk about things that interest them. They're very distinct from each other.

The Hiiragi twins are very different from each other, and have very different interests. Kagami even tries to press some of her own interests onto Konata, thinking they might have something more in common. Tsukasa is more down to earth, will very likely end up a housewife, and just enjoys life. She's the perfect counterbalance between Kagami and Konata. Konata's personality is very obvious, I'll save space instead of elaborating. Surprisingly, even all the first years have fairly well developed personalities after just a few scenes in episode 18. Hiyori is into doujin circles, and if you've ever known someone like that in an anime club, they share a tendency to be ashamed of their hobby. In 19, she's just like any art student I've ever known, very attached to her favorite tools. Patricia "Bouncy-tan in the OP" is the Embrace-everything-"Japanese" exchange student, including all the character traits you see in any real world anime convention attendee that goes to Japan. They "know all about" all sorts of key spots, but do the cliche things, and ignore other landmarks. Iwasaki has a cold demeanor, but is deeply caring, and worries a lot about how she appears and is viewed. A typical person with lower self-esteem, they tend to care more about others.

They are written more like people than characters.

The way they interact comes off more natural too. People with very different interests gradually become tight-knit friends, especially when they've been together in school for so long. They aren't just randomly attached to each other. But neither are they exclusively friends with just each other. Miyuki is always off doing something or gets left out, Kagami has friends in her own class that she doesn't share with her twin. So far, we've never seen Tsukasa even talk with Misao or Ayano. Tsukasa is much closer to just Konata, while Kagami puts in effort to spend time with her own unique subset of friends.

They come off more realistic in their personalities and interactions than most other series. For a show that's all anime references, it's strange, but very nice.

@Ryl - not to disagree completely, but I dont think its the way the characters are presented (like the complex web of relations that you illustrated) that makes this show work. Its because it creates a realistic and familiar atmosphere, that is completely the opposite of other shows that tend to delve into fantasy and impossible situations too much. The jokes used in Lucky Star are something that people can relate to, and maybe even used themselves before. That said, I completely agree with your statement in bold, and I would just like to add - The Lucky Star world IS the real world

Picking on Minami in top form this week. From her flat chest to embarrassing things witnessed by Miyuki's mom.

Misao once again matches wits with Kagami. She really doesn't do anything, but somehow, she still stands out as my favorite of the side characters. She's just so carefree.

The big surprise came of course from Yuuko Gotou as herself on Lucky Channel. Her real life hair length, cut, and appropriate color, her love for motorcycles (according to various websites), etc. She really does have an impressive range. Too bad she always plays cutesy characters.

Enthusiasm for certain character types or traits. Shows like Lucky Star naturally may have characters possessing distilled forms of such traits, but they are readily available in most high school animes as the different character stereotypes that appeal to people liking particular types (silent cool bishoujo, eyeglasses, cute-clumsy, wild, etc).

I find it a kind of elusive concept but I suppose that's only because I try to overanalyze a simple thing.
