View Full Version : KitKat's Thread o' Knitting
KitKat
Mon, 03-12-2007, 11:14 PM
I thought I would make this official, since it's started to grow beyond the scope of irc.
This thread has two purposes. Firstly, if anyone has suggestions of knitting projects, or wants to design cool anime- or game-related knitting patterns, I'd love to hear your ideas! Secondly, if you would like to request a knitted somethingorother, you may do so here.
A few ground rules about making requests:
1. If you are under 18, you must first obtain your parent's permission to give out your mailing address. The internet is full of scary people, and you shouldn't give out personal information unless you're sure it will be ok.
2. The more details you can give me about your request, the easier it will be for me. That being said, if you just want a surprise, you can ask for that too. Keep in mind, hand-knitted things don't always turn out like you expect. Curious about knitting patterns? They're just patterns on graph paper, with the boxes somewhat wider than they are tall to mimic an actual knit stitch. I'll attach an excel spreadsheet I made for my black mage pattern so you can get an idea.
3. I will be making most things out of el-cheapo acrylic yarn. It's not particularly wonderful, but it's functional, and can be reasonably soft, even though colour selection is limited by what's in stock at my local department or craft store. If you want something made out of nicer yarn, you may send it to me and I will knit it up for you.
4. I reserve the right to refuse any requests for any reason whatsoever, and to change up the order on the list for any frivolous reason I so choose. There shall be no complaining about such actions. Projects may also take a very long time to be finished. Knitting can be slow, so be patient.
5. You shall feel no indebtedness for receiving a knitted item. I'm serious. People these days place way too much emphasis on carefully keeping track of every favour and making sure they don't get stuck owing someone else. These knitted somethingorothers are freely given, and should be freely received. I love to knit for you guys because you're my online family, and it makes me happy to knit for you.
Ok, now for the gallery of current and future projects, along with the list that everyone is so curious about what place they are.

Oh my god KitKatz your like the greatest person! I want one. KitKat is now one of the most beloved members of my "Online Family"

Greatfull if this request is granted but...it wouldn't feel right not being indebted.

Well, I wanted more of a banner than a scarf ^_^

Well, you can change the details of what you want at any point up until I start knitting it. You have lots of time to work out the design, and I won't start knitting until I've gone over it with you to make sure I have all the measurements and design correct.

gosh, you really are somethin' else...
i see you've already got a full plate, and i wouldn't want to force myself on you (unless, you know, we were really sloshed at a party and could find a nice upstairs room, get comfortable with some massages and maybe work our way up to... )
No, but seriously, I'd love a good knit cap that covers my ears well. But I know you've got alot to do, and I totally understand if this whole idea becomes loathsome to you in the future. If you're not going to enjoy making it, I don't want it. If yes, then I'd feel really special if you decided to do something for me.
That being said, what's a pretty, smart young lady spending so much of her free time on knitting for? You should be out bewitching and heartbreaking. Seriously, kids these days with their crazy mixed up priorities...

Kitkat is officially the coolest, friendliest, most awesomest person ever :D
I'd like to make a request, but as Lucifus said, it wouldnt' feel rite not being indebted. Especially since i still owe you that coffee :p.
Im gonna have to think about what to request though, what with me not being a very creative person.

You're one the nicest person I ever met!!! You are amazing at knitting.
I would have asked a little something but it wouldn't be polite and acceptable. I would love to see your creations when they will be done!!!!

Honoko, you really should try it! I only learned to knit a few months ago, and I usually only knit while watching tv or anime. It's a great way to multi-task, and gives me more excuses to watch anime :p
Assassin and gr3atfull, I'm adding both of you to the list :D It will probably take a while before I get that far, so you'll have lots and lots of time to think about it.
And now, Arcness sent me pics of the toque I knit for him for Christmas (I forgot to archive it before sending it off) so you guys can check it out! It's the kanji for 'Shinigami'.

saman, it's not really that difficult. I started learning because a friend of mine started to get really into it, and I wanted to keep up with her. The first thing I ever knit was a dishcloth. In fact, I recommend dishcloths as the perfect starting knitting project. You can learn all the basic stitches, finish relatively quickly, and it doesn't matter if you mess up. One website that was a HUGE help to me when I started was KnittingHelp.com (http://www.knittinghelp.com/). They have video tutorials of everything, and it makes a lot more sense when you can see someone doing it. I tried to learn something new on each successive knitting project I attempted.
In terms of patterns, there are a ton on Knitting Pattern Central (http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/) but you often have to sift through tons to find something nice to make. My favourite place to find patterns right now is Knitty (http://www.knitty.com). That's where I found the pattern for the binary scarf and the fingerless gloves (both the type I made for my mom, and the type I made for myself). Otherwise, anything that's plain old stocking stitch can have a pattern put on it, as long as you've drawn out the pattern on graph paper beforehand. It's pretty straightforward!
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d125/engphysgirl/knitting/_DSC8813.jpg
Here are the fingerless gloves I knit for myself. This was my first time modifying an existing pattern, as well as my first time knitting in the round instead of on straight needles. I've never been able to wear gloves before due to my lack of pinky finger (well, I CAN wear them, they just look weird) so it's nice to have a pair custom-made for me. The yarn isn't as stretchy as I thought it would be, but it's cozy nonetheless.
Pattern: Knucks from Knitty (http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTknucks.html)
Yarn: Bernat Denim Style
Time to complete: One weekend plus two days

I can't believe it only took you a weekend to knit that cap or only a little more for those gloves (and you have probably got even better since then!).
Well, I have a preliminary design ready, but I will still try to perfect it. I'll see if I can get it to a state I'm really happy with in order to send it to you today like I earlier promised.

KitKat, the reason i'm jealous is because i've been knitting on and off for as long as i can remember, and you're still better than me :S i've never really tried any formal patterns though, just simple things like scarves and such. i do know about the knitting pattern central website, but i'll definitely have to check out the others you mentioned, especially knittinghelp.com. thanks!
also, do you crochet at all? because since you like knitting so much, you might like crochetting too :)

KitKat, the reason i'm jealous is because i've been knitting on and off for as long as i can remember, and you're still better than me :S
Ridiculous! I may be more adventurous in the patterns I try, but my tension always changes as I knit, and my cast ons and bind offs are wretchedly terrible, being either way too tight or too loose. I'm willing to bet that if you knit one of the same patterns as me, yours would look fantastic. Two-colour projects merely look impressive, when in reality they're just plain stocking stitch.
i've never really tried any formal patterns though, just simple things like scarves and such. i do know about the knitting pattern central website, but i'll definitely have to check out the others you mentioned, especially knittinghelp.com. thanks!
Yeah, following actual patterns that people have written out really clearly is so awesome. They do all the work of figuring out what stitches go where, and how to make it look good, and all you have to do is knit according to directions. I love that there's a lot less old-lady-ish patterns on the web these days and more things that I'd actually wear.
also, do you crochet at all? because since you like knitting so much, you might like crochetting too :)
I've been wanting to learn, but haven't gotten around to it. My mom crochets a lot, and I might get her to teach me at some point. I remember the one and only time I tried crocheting was when I was about 7 years old, and I tried to make just a rectangle, but it turned out looking like a mouse. It was the most deformed rectangle you could possibly imagine. I never did any crocheting after that.
@ Kraco: A weekend usually means about 5-7 hours of knitting each day, since there's a lot more free time (or anime time) whereas on weeknights I may only have an hour or so to knit.

Hehe, it was an experimental scarf. I'm glad it arrived ok, and I hope it keeps you nice and warm next winter. Here's a pic I took before I mailed it away:
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d125/engphysgirl/knitting/dnascarf.jpg
Yep, it's a dna scarf. I'm on the other side of the continent to where I normally live right now, so I won't be able to post the specs till I get home, but I should be back in a week. I also finished the Black Mage and Space Invaders scarves (finally!) and will probably start my next project when I get home (to where my yarn stash is).

KitKat it is very generous of you to give up your free time to make something for people on this forum. I just looked at some of your designs, and you seem very good for someone who has just started out. I looked at the mage design scarf, and it is actually quite beautiful. It's colour scheme is perfect for the winter too. I remember doing some stitching work at school when I was 10, and I did enjoy watching my work come together from just scraps of cloth... guess that was the engineer in me at an early age!
Would it be possible to add me to your request list as well? I know you already have 11 people on the list, so if you don't have the energy for more requests I will understand totally.

DB, for sure I'll add you! I might take a while to get through the list, but you won't be forgotten.
So, here are the pics of the now finished Black Mage scarf and Space Invaders scarf. For the space invaders one, I initially chose a set of knitting needles far too small so it took me an insanely long time to knit. I also ran out of blue at the end, hence my little cartoon improvisation.

Does the weather get ever cold enough in Singapore to use a scarf comfortably? (Or perhaps it should be said need to have a scarf to be comfortable.)
But you are absolutely right: The space invaders scarf looks splendid. It even has six colours!

Actually it's like summer in Singapore all year round, and you can break out a good sweat even wearing a long sleeved shirt in the day time. But still, that space invader scarf is good enough for air conditioned places too :p

Hot off the press!
I was randomly inspired last night to make an ipod cozy, Code Geass themed. Random knitting details I won't bore you with, except for the fact that the sewing took about twice as long as the knitting. The sewing was EVIL, especially that little plastic sheet under the screen. It also turned out a bit big, so if I made this pattern again I think I'd go to a smaller size of knitting needles. Anyways, the sleeves for the power cord and headphones are something I was working on earlier, that I'd seen someone else do and thought was cool. Now I'll be able to tell all my silly cords apart by colour!

In other news, I made some knitting needles the other day. Maybe this is revealing too much of my alternate geeky sides but....well, you guys have known me long enough that it probably doesn't make a difference, hehe.

The needles themselves I made last summer when I discovered some wooden dowels at my parents' house. I cut them the right length, sharpened them with a pencil sharpener, and then sanded them down smooth. It was only last week when I was in my local hobby shop and buying dice for craft-related purposes that it occured to me to glue some onto the ends of my knitting needles. The smaller pair will be mailed off as part of a craft swap (if the dice seem an odd size, it's because they're smaller than regular dice) and the geekier pair with the d10 and d12 will be for myself, to make more geeky knitting projects on :D

First up is Phoenix's scarf that he requested. The phoenix pattern is based off his old avatar, and the kanji is for fire. I freestyled the middle.

(Still avoiding looking at the picture.)
I'm getting a little worried because so far the postman hasn't delivered the parcel. I hope the ever hungry Atlantic ocean hasn't devoured it on its way here. I'm not impatient, but I have personally lost two of three items a friend in the USA attempted to send to me (got the most expensive one, fortunately). Well, I hope it's a different story from Canada...

I wouldn't start getting worried until after a couple more weeks. I used the cheapest shipping (because I am poor and a student), so the estimate they gave me was 4-6 weeks. I haven't had anything go missing in the mail yet, and I sent 3 packages to Russia this summer. I'd imagine your postal system is more consistent than Russia's, so remain optimistic!

Heh heh. Yes, I hope it is! (No offense to Russia but that's one big country and not altogether stable...) Thanks for the info! I can now rest my nights somewhat more easily for a time. For I don't know how bad I'd have felt if this one had gone missing for good. The stuff from the USA that never arrived were just bought items (the friend bought them and sent), not something someone spent hours to craft by hand.

After more than a month I had already lost my hope and succumbed to the dire feeling of hopelessness. And so I was unprepared indeed to the surprise the post had carried me today, but what a pleasant surprise it was! I was grinning as if it was a premature Christmas when I realised the nature of the packet I was holding in my hands.
My greatest thanks to you, KitKat! It's bigger than I expected, thicker than I expected and just as warm as I expected from a handicraft by you! A wonderful gift indeed.

I wonder if it is too late to request something, hope not. If you have time a pair of plain black fingerless gloves with the initials "DR" on the back would be nice.
Happy Holidays.

It's never too late to request something, as long as you're willing to wait an indefinite amount of time to receive it. I'll add you to the list :)
I haven't made much progress on the request list lately because Christmas knitting has taken priority, but I hope to have Lucifus' request finished by beginning to mid January.
In the meantime, here's a couple pics of a hat that I designed. I'm not totally happy with how it turned out, but I think it's pretty good for a 'first draft'. It's still unfinished here, but you can get the general idea.

Well, I haven't made much progress on my request list, because I got distracted into joining up with all these other blogs that were having giveaways. Here are the things that I made for my giveaway, in all their geeky glory: Red Mage and Black Mage potholders, and a 1up mario wristband.

Jolly good work. I haven't read 8-bit theater for like half a year. Maybe I should catch up one of these days...

Hello Lucifus it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a conversation with another member in any one of our forums?

Thanks guys! I should have mentioned that the pattern isn't mine - it's published online here (http://chartreuseknits.blogspot.com/2005/09/dragon-scale-gauntlet-pattern.html). However, I did modify it a bit to add in thumbs.
Today I also finished my first cardigan ever. I made it with lace yarn, and I think it turned out pretty well for a first sweater attempt. The pattern is Stardust from Knitty (http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter07/PATTstardust.html).
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d125/engphysgirl/knitting/stardust2.jpg
In terms of original designs, I'm in the middle of figuring out how to do the FMA logo from the back of Ed's coat with a cable pattern (not an easy task...but I'm making progress) as well as how to make a lace shawl pattern that will be a pac-man level. We'll see how these ideas turn out.

Lucifus and his bag inspired me to try and beg for some woolen awesomeness myself
Here are the 2 figures I'd like stitched in 2 gloves
http://i.imgur.com/UCjRT.png
An adorable black and white mage
What i was thinking was:
- A black glove with a black mage stitched in white
- A white glove with a white mage stitched in black
Being so far down on the list I'll have plenty of time to think on how i can fully abuse of Kitty's powers for my own benefit so changes may occur
Anyway, /tackle hug from the shadows!!

People with question marks are people that I haven't heard from in a long time. If I can't contact someone, I'll just move to the next person on the list.
If you've signed up, but I forgot you in the listing (sometimes I lose track, if people ask to be on the list but don't actually post in the thread) just let me know and I'll put you on there.
I'm making good progress on DS' scarf, so this is a heads up to the next couple people to be working on the specifications of what you want. You can send me designs, and I can tell you whether or not it's knittable.
I've been trying to get ahold of Masa, but he apparently doesn't check his PM's. So, in the event that neither Masa nor Assassin sends me a proposed pattern before I finish knitting DS' scarf, I'm going to move Sapphi up in the list to be next (because I'm actually very excited to knit legwarmers!)

Ok, originally i was gonna keep it simple with a headband, but Lucifus' bag made me waaayyy too envious...me wants!
So, if its not too much trouble i'd like something similar. For the pattern, i would like the word "Mac" on the front, with a fireball (you know the one :p) in place of an a. On the inside of the flap, i would like this (http://www.titanicons.com/files/Pakistan_Flag_Orb_Icon__500px__Copyright___2006_Ti tan_Icons.jpg) image, on a white background.
For the outside color scheme, i think simple black with a white outline and the letters in maroon/red would be good.
I hope its not too complicated a design. Let me know if you need any other details/dimensions/whatever. I shall be forever grateful for this awesomeness.

I've been around long enough to see you grow on the forums, Kit, but I never really integrated myself into the community to personally get to know you. However, all your knitting works thus far have been amazing, and I just wanted to to let you know that. Like Assassin, the bag for Lucifus is probably my favourite creation, as I've always liked those type of bags (as opposed to backpacks).
Keep up the good work!
KitKat
Wed, 03-31-2010, 10:45 PM
Aww, thanks Alhuin! I hope to get to know you better and to keep making more and more awesome things :)
Assassin, that sounds like a challenge. Not that that's a bad thing, because I like challenges! But I probably won't start planning it out until after exams are done, so I'll get back to you when it's time to start finalizing the details.
For sure I will be moving Sapphi up on the list anyhow, because my co-worker is going to knit the same legwarmers, so I told her we could knit through the pattern together.
