If you load up one of those banners, you'll see that it has dark bars on the sides. Is the CSS designed to take in pictures of 815 width with black bars or is are those black bars added by the image rotation thing?

Scanlines are annoying, but it's really the only thing that ties the banners together. Otherwise they'd just be a mess of different banners for different series.

LOL, I honestly didnt even realize that was my 2000th, being as I havent posted since November.

Anyway, A comp doesnt sound like a bad idea, since the last comp that was held was the one I held way back in January-March of LAST YEAR.

But I think for this to be a comp, the Admins would have to approve it. Its not like we're doing it for just fun, but for the banners to change with the times a little. And seeing as we are not the owners of the site, it need to be said by them. Otherwise, they might just choose ones they like.

How about not much of a contest... I see it as a community activity. Lets face it getting your art in the banner is full-filling. Not to turn down the contest idea at all, let us flesh it out a bit, How about some categories, or art styles, something to make it challenging to people. As it sits right now, if all you want to do is make some banners and post them then it isn't a contest. If you want to create something else about it then lets see it.

How Many is a good number to have "win"?

If we are to replace all of our current banners then we would not need those scan lines, however we would still need to make it look like it is suppose to be there and banners are sort of fit a theme of sorts. If we are not replacing the current ones, then how many are we adding?

Artist permission?

I'm sure though we never got permission from the fan artist that made our current banners. As well I see it mostly un-needed hassle to get permission for every fan art that is in the public domain. (Not that I don't care for the artist, but if the artist put it up on the internet, they surely have to know that it is now fair game to everyone.)

However do what you will about that, just saying that i'm not going to play in this contest if I have to hunt down some random guy that made the picture of Fate/stay Night I found on a image board with no mention of a artist.I'm serious, It's a waste of time to me

I'd think around 10 banners would be pretty good for a Rotation. But nothing more than that.

Hey, if it doesn't have a Copyright logo on it, the artist doesn't say your not allowed to use it, and its free, I dont see any reason to hunt down creators of the fanart just to ask them permission to use it when its up for free grabs on the net.

we have been talking about it. so far what Deadfire said has been right. I do want to make this into an activity, have people vote on which ones they like best and all of that. But, first thing first, we're going to need a couple more entries for it to get any kind of real excitement. Some of the ones you've done so far are awesome Lucifus, and I certainly imagine we'll be using at least a couple of thenm.

i am the one who wanted to get artist permission before using the fanarts. But, as has been pointed out to me, it's sometimes next to impossible to track down the person who made the fanart you wanted to use. Some fanarts don't have links or names, othertimes it's just impossible to find the artist. If people are using fanart to make a banner, and an artist's name and site are clearly displayed, I'd like to think people would have the courtesy of asking them... I know I would...

I'd like to replace all the current banners.... but I do like that there are different animes shown there. All Naruto banners could get annoying... There certainly will be categories, and the ones I'm thinking of are:

Naruto (duh), Bleach (double duh), One Piece, Gundam (both have their own discussion sections, even if they're not the hub of activity), Kyou Kara Maou (AONE's subbed the whole damn thing). I suppose a FMA one couldn't hurt either (nor a Code Geass one...) ...and, well, you all know my personal opinions on Fate/Stay Night.... but I suppose we could have a banner for that one up as well.

so, technically there's still alot of the details up in the air. I hope we get some other people to contribute as well. Depending on that, we'll see if it's a full-blown contest or a simple competition.

Don't get me wrong on the fanart permission thing. I've already notified several of the artists that I'd liek to use there renders. However only the ones that didn't specify if they wanted it used or not. Havn't come across any that asked for permission.

I mean, it's not like the old banners are bad, it's just that we've had them for about a year.

I've convinced ciber to go ask the original forum styler for the templates, but I don't know if he's going to be able to find them or not. I'd rather not make people re-create the scanline theme by hand :p.

I can't get off the sig frenzy! Whats wrong with me?!

Took about an hour to recreate the scanline. (It pissed me off royally)

1.) Open up PS and create a new image pixels 8 x 8.

2.) Press CTRL+0 to fit to screen.

3.) Select the pencil tool and make a diagonal white line cutting across the image from the bottom left to top right. Make it two pixels going the diagonally. Leave the sides blank. Then in the top left corner put a single white pixel. Do the same for the bottom right corner.

4.) Select all. CTRL+A Then go to the EDIT menu and select Define Pattern. Name it Scanlines.

5.) Open up the image you want to apply the scanlines to. Then go to the Blending Options of the layer you want scanlined. Go to Pattern Overlay tab and click the pattern. Then select teh scanline pattern you just made. Change to Blend mode to Soft Light and adjust the Opacity until you feel you have it right.

I miss the Inuyasha banner. Must all banners look like the characters are either ready to start killing, are otherwise pissed off, or look like distant memories of once better times? Not that there's anything wrong with those, but if it's rotation, there could be really different themes also present. Calm, warm, sunny and friendly ones to supplement the action or danger filled ones.

At this point, it seems like the only contest is going to be between all of Lucifus' entries. I'm eventually going to get around to making some 'lighter' banners (in the style Kraco talked about earlier, I'd really like a KKM and a tender Bleach one), but it might take me awhile... and chances are I still suck at Photoshop...

We (mods and all that) discussed it. Even if we don't give out anything special to the winners, it'd be good to get acknowledged for your ability, and to have your stuff on the page. We concluded this was enough of a prize, but apparently it's not much of an incentive. Well, so be it. I don't give a shit, since Lucifus essentialy guranteed that the forums will have a new flavor throughout the next couple months, and I do intend to snipe some nice wallpapers and edit them to fit the frontpage, if worse comes to worst.

Lucifus, you have my deepst respects. Great effort. And, you shouldn't really worry about the competition at this point. If you're enjoying making these things, keep them coming. You should take delight in it yourself, and know that everyone here will appreciate it as well (even if they don't post it).

Dude! How'd you do it? After spending half an hour getting the scanlines somewhat right, I just got feedup with making em thicker. I couldn't figure out how.

This is assuming you're doing it using patterns.

Another way to do it is to make 3 layers of 1 px scanlines and shifting 2 of them to form 2 px scanlines. This method isn't very good and requires way more work than what's actually needed to achieve the same effect.

Other than that, I'm adding in the neighborhood of 30 of the submitted banners to the rotation. Mostly because I like the ones I'm adding, and because I'm way too lazy to coordinate a contest or even a poll with all 30 of the ones I've deemed "good enough". All of this is, of course, completely arbitrary.

I kept most submissions, but some were somewhat redundant (eg: most of the Geass submissions were basically the same). In general, I threw out things that I didn't like for whatever reason.

Thanks for all the hard work, and good job.

Edit: I also ran an imagemagick convert to turn the pngs into jpgs, because ... well, pngs were averaging 200K, and the jpgs are averaging 20-40K. Having noticable load times for the banners is probably a bad thing :).

What are the requirements to be a GW banner? Scan lines and a certain size xD?

Oh yeah, I was gonna add those... after some compression that is :p. They're part of the rotation.


Requirements:

Dimensions = 815x120px
Side borders: match other banners (ie: slight charcoal-color gradient, unbroken white line borders). More generally, don't break the layout..
Scan lines, in the image only, not in the borders. No real formal requirement on how they are, but don't go too crazy with them. Subtle is good. (I don't really know why for the scanlines... it's a Ciber thing ...). Anyway, try to match the status-quo...
Lay off the blur effect. If your image looks like an impressionist painting, it's not going up. If it looks like I've got cataracts, it's not going up.
Image content must be safe for work, and must be anime-themed. Preferably themed from a series that received significant discussion here while it was airing.
Your image format should be .jpg or .png. If you give me a .png, I'll likely convert it to a .jpg with ImageMagick. I don't have anything against png's, just that with drawing close to 40 banners in the rotation now and all of them being jpegs already, a png would be sort of out of place. Needless to say (because I'm asking for jpegs), no animations will be considered.
Image size under 100K. Under 60K is preferable if you can do it. If you can't or don't bother, but I like your image, I'll drop the quality a couple percent with ImageMagick and making sure it doesn't look like crap at a lower jpeg quality setting before posting it. But if you don't want me brutalizing it with software beyond your control, you should consider meeting this one...
Most importantly, it has to impress me enough decide that it's worth spending the time to post (including changing formats and compressing it further, if I deem it necessary). Generally, I like anything that has a decent design sense, good colors, uses the space reasonably well and is reasonably interesting without being too distracting.

I've been considering an upgrade to the latest vbulletin for like the last 2 years (even more the last 2 months thanks to vb3.7), but it means gigantic migration and basically re-themeing the forums from scratch, because of the number of changed and updated templates, functions and hooks. I'm no graphic designer (... just look at my sig for evidence there :p).

I'd love to update the look and feel of the forums, and get a bunch of the new features of 3.6 and 3.7 (ajax reputations, edit history, built-in image gallery, tagging, relationship stuff, wall-style public messaging, user-defined usergroups, tons of other cool shit). But I just don't have the motivation to fix the theme or make a new one...

ok, while the diagonal pinstripe thing is somewhat of a softer requirement, the horizontal lines .... that ain't gonna fly :p

Other than that, I dunno, if the borders match up (including the gradient, watch that...) then you might be on the right track. I've got no photoshop skills, so no advice for you on that one though.

Archie, good work with this one. Big improvement from the Medusa one. The text in your second version looks perfect. The white outline however just ruins it for me. It's just too jarring. I'd say, go back to what you had in your first version, and then selectively delete your scanlines over top of the render, until you get a balance of 'clean' to 'scanny' that suits you.

I also tried using black scanlines on the left and white ones on the right to make it more interesting ( the whole banner spins around that black and white concept i guess )

is looking great arch, just two thoughts come to mind;

lower the contrast a little not so much on the renders but on the places that look overcontrasted... the really bright spots that lack any detail.

the fractal background is tight, im feelin it, i think it'd look better and help draw attention to the faces in the BG as well as the focal renders if you blurred the fractal layer in spots where you think needs it. mix it up, but make it flow together.

Made the blood and his eyes more realistic, thereby delivering more focus to them

Made the scanlines a bit more transparent as to make the overall banner look more "clean"

First, if your banner was overlooked simply repost it and ask for opinions again. Second, I have no clue why it's not usable (the second one), I haven't seen anyone mention that it isn't, so it may be all in your head. Comp is probably the only guy that can tell you what's good or no good to be added, and since he isn't frequenting the forum as much as he used to you simply have to sit tight and hope he comes around and notices.

Cleaned it to perfection i think, just not sure if i should leave their flag in color or make it black and white too

I say leave it. I love clean images like that, and the color at the end keeps it from being like a photograph taken in B&W only because people think it makes it more "artsy."

The colored logo makes it more like an exclamation point if that makes any sense at all.

Hey, they look good, especially the Tower of Druaga one, since it has an artistic blend of shading and glow around the characters. I prefer the Kannagi with no scanline because it makes the GotWoot in the background stand out more visibly. Other than that, great job.

Okay, back for another shot.

I thought about dropping in an image of Alto, but it never really seemed to fit too well. Some of the best art I could find were of Alto-hime (gender bender kind and not just in costume). So I opted for a VF-25 instead. I lose a part M82 (galaxy in the bg) I liked, but it helps cut down on the dominating negative space I had on the right side.

If the trend is to keep the scanlines off of the characters, that's a quick fix.

@RZ - I like the hack one. For the persona set, I think the render edges need to be cleaned up a bit. The white crop lines are quite visible upon closer inspection. Also, maybe you can try changing the BG colour. They all seem to be green.

@Luc - as much as I enjoy your style, I think that you had better spend the time trying out something completely different. Everyone knows you have more than enough talent for it. Maybe you can come up with an even better style than what you have been doing so often recently.

@Ryll - I think the VF can be used as a BG effect instead of simply being an image placed as a render. If you enlarge it and drop opacity, it might give the BG more depth and kill the blank space around the two characters. Upping the contrast/brightness for the character renders should also help bring them out.

Hopefully, this one will do it. One with a VF and one without. I think I hit a balance on the negative space by moving the characters out over more of the starfield on the right side, exposing more of the colorful bg.

For popular series like Gurren, you can get loads of high quality fanart, doujin covers, or even homage artwork by other artists off danbooru. That's where I get most of the stuff I'm using. The resolutions are usually very high too. There are image sites were everything comes in high resoultions too, if you want to go overboard.

The renders look good Zell but the background looks blurry and dirty so it doesn't go with them at all

Although sadly good quality dot hack images are hard to find. When I stumbled upon this renders it was as if I had hit jackpot.

The backgrounds are conceptual art from the same game. Yet the blurry effect was supposed to be there, to give the renders the focus, instead of the background. The dirty part I do feel it, but like I said... hard to find good quality dot hack images. It may be popular among some of us... yet not among scanners it seems.

Anyway... when I'm at home I'll try hunting better scans from where I got the backgrounds. Thanks for the pointers Archie.

I like the second one better. It might do it some good to remove the feathers at the center of the sig, and maybe smooth out the shades of the character render to make it match the blending of the BG more.

Or maybe Gimp can't do it the way... I tried to find a tool which makes the render faint a bit into the background but both the smude and blurring tool make it look somewhat weird.

I didn't mean to make the render darker. I like the previous brightness more.

What I meant by smoothing it out is use the blur tool or the smudge tool to let the shades blend with the flat colours. It'll help make the image look more in sync with the more realistic BG.

Oh, I thought the image was placed on there. Nevertheless, some smoothing and other quirks would do the trick. As for the emptiness, you could place another Rozen Maiden character on there, though only one comes to mind when I think of "dark".

Right click on the rotating banner image at the top (rotate.php) and open it on a new page. You'll notice that that is the only part of the banner that needs modification when making a new banner. The rest is all part of the standard layout of the site.

I actually like what kage did more, the extra paint makes it feel even more ying and yang then before. Ichigo seems far more troubled now with the extra smudges, while ogichi, even though its white, feels far more sinister due to the smoke like effects.

I don't especially like either. The conflicting "aura's" just clash too abruptly. Theres no need to fight over it.

I love the red firey brushing on the right side round his arm. If you could make a similar one on the opposite side where his other arm is just like you have it... would look sick. Im thinking blackish flames?
