This series is one that I'm looking forward to, because I really enjoy the manga, it's silly and fun, so hope it goes well becoming into an anime series.

From ANN :
According to the Shonen Sunday News Page, Hayate the Combat Butler (Hayate no Gotoku) will be made into a TV anime series. A future issue of Shonen Sunday will include an announcement about when the show will be aired and which network will carry it.

Shougakukan will be screening an original Hayate animated short at their upcoming "Next Generation World Hobby Fair." The Fair will take place in a number of cities, including Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya and Fukuoka.

16-year-old Hayate is really down on his luck. Because his unemployed parents are good-for-nothings who waste what money they have on gambling, Hayate had to start working at a young age to help out his family. Although such experience has made him inhumanly fast and tough and skilled at things boys aren`t normally skilled it, it has also left him in an awkward position, as his parents have racked up such a huge gambling debt that they have sold Hayate to the yakuza for the value of his organs. In a desperate attempt to avoid that fate, Hayate decides to become a “bad guy” and kidnap someone to be held for ransom, but his efforts to do so are mistaken as a confession of love by the girl he targets. When he helps save the (as it turns out) ultra-wealthy 13-year-old Nagi from real kidnappers, she takes him in and gives him a job as her new personal butler (and love interest) until he can pay off his debt. But Hayate is more attracted to Nagi`s beautiful teenage maid Maria, and head butler Klaus is initially disapproving of the boy with such a poor look. And then there`s Nagi`s pet Tama, who is also a force to be reckoned with.

I just realized that this show is a lot like Zero no Tsukaima, with some high class girl suddenly stuck with a servant. The main character type is kind of different though, since this butler guy seems to want to sincerely serve his master.

Just watched the raw, kinda dissapointed since they missed the punchlines on a few jokes. I'll have to see if they up the pace in the next ep.

yeah and hayate wasn't bleeding half to death when he got ran over, that added so much dramatic effect. I know they are show some censoring but 1 or 2 line of blood wouldn't have been too much.

If i'm right then the jokes you are refering to is probably the part where hayate first met nagi and was saying how he want her and silently adding stuff like "for your money" in his mind.

Yeah, I was dissapointed with the first episode as well. The jokes seemed forced IMO...I think I might have over-hyped this series for myself hoping it would be on par with Zero no Tsukaima.

Though since Eclipse and SS are doing the joint it'll probably be subbed with speed so I'll at least check out the next couple episodes to see any progress.

Personally, I loved the line where they said they couldn't broadcast all the blood on tv. I felt it fit perfectly within the scope of this series. The principal at his school with the Gendo Ikari pose, perfect.

This series was always about references, and so far, I felt it matched the manga perfectly. Enough that I started to skim the episode because it was so similar.

just watched it...wasn't expecting much but it left a really good impression on me :D

i loved waht they did with the classic evil side/good side argument...it was great!

lol and santas guest appearance was great, hayate really showed him something!

That scene where hayate saves the girl at the vending machine is pretty much the only combat in this episode, it was very brief so i can't really decide if the fight scenes are going to be great but he did make a pretty cool angry face at the bad guys

but yeah, i have a good feeling about this series ^^

Ryllharu
Fri, 04-06-2007, 11:51 AM
It's not much of a fighting series. It's a parody and reference series. "Combat Butler" isn't really a misnomer, but you should expect a comedy series.

You can probably compare the combat aspect of it to ones in School Rumble. There are fights, but they shouldn't really be taken seriously.

This seemed like a good episode to me. Not bad, not great, but just good. It was certainly better than what I was expecting.

Is it just me or does Hayate look extremely similar to Laharl from Disgaea during that car chase? He had the red scarf that was somehow floating in the air by itself, the blue hair, and the evil eyes when he was on the car.

I enjoyed this first episode. Many laughs!

What I didnt like was for some reason the HD version was all buggy for me. My other HD episodes and shows play just fine in the 1280x768 format. Odd... I wonder if it's a encode error on the subbers side.

This seems like it'll be a pretty funny show, I noticed several referances to other shows and probably missed even more. From all the hype I've heard about the manga I don't think I'll be able to resist. Hope the show is as good of as anime as it is as a manga.

That is exactly the reason I can't take the Emperor in Code Geass seriously. Every time he speaks I get this image of a yellow ball with underwear on it's head.

What was Nagi's mask and throwing cards into the yakuza's foreheads a reference to? I thought it was Sailor Moon for a while, but the cards didn't fit.

I also loved Maria telling Hayate the bath scene had all been a dream. Simple, sometimes overused, but still classic.

So apparently the angelic Maria has a wrathful side, heh, everyone in the house is afraid of her when she's angry. I'm also a little disappointed that Tama didn't turn out to be the narrator.

I didn't catch that many references in this one. The Metal Gear ones in the preview stood out, as well as the ***y ones. The only other one I was able to catch were the Lance of Longinus (from Evangelion) spearing Hayate while he was insulted by the head butler.

I'm really enjoying this series so far, Nagi is a cool character. I like how she's seems genuinely caring in many scenes, and isn't afraid to show it. I also think it's refreshing to see the character know that she likes the other person, instead of the usual constant denials.

I'm somewhat surprised Nishizawa and Hayate's reunion came so quickly. I kind of expected it to be a running gag until close to the end of the series. I will not spoil the arguably funniest scene about it since it just came out. Even after all the speeches from last episode, Hayate's past and future goals are far more pathetic than previously thought. I love how they continuously make him so pitiable.

Nagi looked so happy to be the first person in Hayate's phone.

Where was his kick supposed to be from in this episode? Even with the hint, I don't know the reference.

A google search for "Inazuma Kick" gave this result (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9YR8BGl_xw)

Further research indicates an OVA Gunbuster (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=185) and/or Gunbuster 2 (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2120).

Although it was dead obvious that the episode was going to be spent on the teacher's guilt become larger and larger with Hayate's celebration, I thought that it was really well-done. I was laughing so much for almost the entire episode (but then again, I was sugar-high when I watched it, so that probably contributed).
Well, I like how Hayate managed to get in the school, just for possible future entertainment, haha.

They really experiment a lot of stuff with Hayate. Its nice, but I just hope they dont overdo it. It kind of gets me down though, that there are a lot of guys stronger than Hayate. I always enjoyed him surprising the hell out of everyone with his extreme power and jack-of-all-trades quality. Now he is just one of the butlers. Yey, a Nagi episode. Does anyone else think that the relationships between the characters in this show is based mostly on pity? I mean, Maria and Nagi pity Hayate and interact with him as such, and as shown in this episode, Hayate pities and symphatizes with Nagi for being unable to draw manga. Its like a circle of looking down at each other rather than a real love triangle.

I didn't really like this episode. There wasn't really a focus at all. I did like the mentioning that screencappers should be on high alert during the whole episode, and then providing numerous slow shots and several angles. The Lancelot reference was amusing as well, but Lucky Star had a reference to CG too this week. ("Buy me the Le***ch manga")

This episode just didn't have "it" like the other anime exclusive episode and the main storyline.

I think it simply gets repetitive, having no real plot. All people can talk about it "I liked this joke, or that joke" and that gets tiring and pointless fast.

Oh, and it seems like I understood everything about each character after seeing them only once. They really should develop them a bit more.

I absolutely agree. I liked that voice ever since I first heard it in the anime Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas. He played a freaking stone statue there that cant move any part of its body (but can teleport and shoot lasers), and thus had no expressions, but his voice made it possible to understand and be funny and interesting.

His role in Code Geass and Baccano was unfitting though.

So much lameness in one episode..
Hayate didn't even fought seriously once.
He won all his match by default.
The only one he did "fought" was the one with Hinagiku, and he even there, it was lame.
The lamest fight was of course, the last one.

And here I had good expectation, good fights for a couples more episodes, but no, just crap.
And where the hell was Isumi? Surely not in France.. right? I mean. that girl did say "bonjour", but can Isumi really get from Japan to France by simply being "lost", there's a limit to everything..

If you're taking a series like this so god awfully seriously, you need to take a break and smell some daisies. This series is not an action anime, it's not a martial arts anime, it's not a competitive anime, it's a comedy anime about a poor butler and him being a Gundam. If you're looking for those in Hayate of all places, and in episode 28 no less, you need a huge chill pill.

That's a matter of personal opinion. I would agree that the episode as a whole wasn't particularly funny, in fact was somewhat boring, but I did find a few parts worth smiling at.

The uber maid turning out to be a middle school girl made me chuckle, especially since it raised the issue of lesbian pedophilia which, for some reason, I'd never imagined could exist.

Hayate completely embarrassing Hinagiku with his butler agility was also worth a smile, as was the absurdity of Isumi in Paris and the little kid who serves his butler getting attacked by a dog.

Yeap... i found this episode entertaining (although the one before was better).
i did think it was funny that hayate never really fought once in what was the final ep of a tournament (i also laughed at the kamehameha).

I mean think of it, this show had fights where there wasn't supposed to be any. did you really think that they'd make him fight where he was expected to?

I haven't finished the series yet, but here's some news on a second season:

A page from a future issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine has reportedly announced that a second season of Hayate the Combat Butler! (Hayate no Gotoku!) has been greenlit for production. The story follows a boy named Hayate who serves as a butler, bodyguard, confidante, and more to a girl named Nagi to pay off a 156,804,000-yen (about US$1.6-million) debt. The next issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday, which publishes Kenjirou Hata's original manga, will go on sale on April 2. The final episode of the first 52-episode run will air in Japan this Sunday. Viz Media publishes the manga in North America.
