Can you post some screenshots? I decided not to upgrade until most of the bugs had been fixed. Is it drastically different from XP?

I played with it for a week and half. I didn't like it at first, but the more I played with it, the more I liked it. I installed both 32 and 64 bit versions. I think they are trying too hard to make windows easy to use for the biggest noobs, but in the end result, everything tends to feel cluttered and hard to navigate around. I like it though.

Too bad you'll have to get Vista if you want to utilize DX10.

... So, as a person who plays a lot of games on my computer I am pretty much forced to get it.

I don't know what DX10 is, so I won't be getting it.

Correction, if you want to play games that ONLY support directx10 ( like the halo2 port ), then you will need vista, otherwise you are fine with xp, crysis uses directx10, but fully supports directx9.0c too, and so will all games till like perhaps in 4 years from now.

And directx10 doesnt only require vista, it requires dx10 videocards too, those aren't even out yet.

Anyone gotten their hands on the retail version of vista yet?
Going to buy a new computer in a near future and considering if it's worth updating to vista with that. To be able to get everything i can get out of crysis with directx 10 is what makes me want it the most.

Xp Vs. Vista, xp came out as the winner in most parts but you should take into consideration that the drivers and other things are still in need of updates for Vista

And on a sidenote some funny clips about Vista.

If i were you i would wait a bit before getting vista, give it some time for your favorite game/programs to update for vista compatibility.

Yes. 3 months ago. I still don't like it. XP all the way...for now.

Reasons to upgrade: pretty interface, shiny new tech.
Reasons not to upgrade: expensive, known bugs, driver issues, lack of compelling reasons to upgrade, pervasive drm, application support problems, draconian licensing ...

I've got a copy of vista business courtesy of my department, but it's apparently only good for one activation. Knowing that I tend to reinstall os'es about twice a year (because of random configuration changes and whatnot), I'm going to wait until I've got a newer system and service pack 1's out. Might snag a university copy of enterprise and give it a try at work though.

Vista is pretty much XP with marginal improvements. It looks better, but performance-wise it is NOT worth the upgrade (>$100 for non-students). Stick with XP unless you are absolutely forced into getting it.

Anyone can explain what in the world do you need 15+ gig for operating system? XP runs at about 4 gigs .

1. implementation of IPv6 wiht IPv4 in the network stack has opened way to many holes in vista security.

2. user's can exploit "administrative escalation" and get superuser access to all parts of your OS, and cause all sorts of malicious damage.

3. The network stack is VIRGINAL...aka, it has not been tested in a hostile environment and hardened like XP. Microsoft actualy rewrote the network stack FROM SRCATCH

4. anyone that uses vista is still beta testing it.....this saves microsoft money, and causes the user headaches....Vista also cannot support several popular antivirus programs on the market.

Read em and weep ....in fear or frustration.....vista does not yet have my confidence.

Just got my university enterprise copy, installed it on two fairly middle-of-the-road machines (p4 northwood 3.2ee's, nvidia quadro fx 500 video cards, 2gb ram each). Runs pretty well, but I've got a load of gripes about things that are unnecessarily different, unintuitive changes, bad defaults.

My users are probably getting office 2007 in the next two or three weeks, but not getting vista for quite a while.

the only thing i really don't like about vista, is that soundblaster support is freaking horrible.
Other then that i think its fine, runs great too and such, but ill be using xp for another year or so at the least.

My thoughts exactly. Most of the changes to the UI were totally unnecessary, the best example being the "revamped" start menu. The system font (Segoe UI) is also a poor choice because not every monitor works well with ClearType fonts. My laptop's screen is okay but my desktop LCD is absolutely brutal with ClearType.
