Downloading now (20 minutes left). The premise sounds cool, and the picture on ANN looks good, but I'll letcha know what I think... so many good shows out this season... Utawarerumono, Himawari, xxxHolic, Disgaea, second season of Ah, My Goddess... not to mention Fate/Stay Night (dunno if that's considered new still... even though it's only up to episode 15), and the hopefully soon to start second season of Tsubasa Chronicles. I'm gonna be busy with all that anime to watch!

Well, after watching the hour long special, I have to say that this is not an anime that I'll continue following. While it was filled with humerous scenes, it was just a little too off the wall for my tastes.

Just watched the hour long special. I didn't think it was too bad, but this is a series that I won't watch everytime it's released, I'll watch it once in a while when I'm bored and want to watch a lot of stupidity. I'll give it another chance though, and see how the next episode comes about.

Wow this thread is old, it seems no one here watches this anime. I was thinking of picking this one up since its pretty long, and it seemed like it can be entertaining.

Actually I watch Gintama its fairly random and the partner show of Bleach. Just be ready for a really odd show if you pick this up and note its being subbed VERY slowly. Its only subbed upto 44 and I believe 80 episodes are out. Given the releases download very fast from bittorrent under a half hour on average.

slight correction its 44/84 but they are subbing them still its just a bit slow and I don't think anybody is doing them faster then Rumbel. They didn't do the episodes before 20 though shinsen should have those but they are significantly slower.

Yeah, I love this series, I was waiting for Shinsen for a while there, and went to rumble. Glad I did, mindless humour is great.

I love all the characters, awesome. I haven't checked out the manga in a while, might go see if there are some new chapters.

Gintama is like the Southpark of Japan. Except for a few continuous story-arcs, that´s it. But keep watching ,it´s really great. The best absurd comedy you´ll see. Hm, I have to continue watching, too. Kind of stopped at around ep 170 i think...

Didnt no where exactly I stopped, but I just finished the arc from 178-180, about that female ninja and her master, that was believed to be dead. I must have forgotten, but who exactly is that girl? Im wondering, since I got some awfully strong romantic vibes from between her and Gintoki. Seemed strange for a character I couldnt remember, haha.

Seriously, guys, am I the only one watching? To be honest, this is maybe THE best anime of all times. It´s the Japanese equivalent of South Park, although with a different flavor and a more serious continuous plot at times. It´s like a commentary on all of Japan´s entertainment industry. Love it.

Anyway, havent seen the new episode yet, laters!

I had to chime in out of lurking to say "I'm excited!"

Gintama is one of the only series to consistently make me literally laugh out loud besides One Piece! Not all the episodes are great (or even good), but compared to so many series that initially look fun but peter out towards the end. . .well, it's refreshing. And when Gintama gets it right, it's gold (like the Benizakura arc or the character ranking polls arc).

It also has some of my favorite OP and ED songs. The only problem now is that I have to wait!

I´m finally catching up with Gintama. Just watched episode 302. (newest is 310).

Omg! Finally another serious arc! For anybody who wants to rejoin, the arc starts at episode 300.

I love it when Gintama decides to do these serious arcs. Somehow, despite all the silly stuff, it manages to be as exciting as the best serious shounen anime.

damn, this anime is SO good when it´s serious. This is what I´ve looked for in the recommendations thread a long time ago, you know, a change of genre inmidst of a series. And it´s SO effective, going from comedy to serious drama. See also Clannad.

As for this episode, if it had been only Matsudaira who got punished to death, I´d have held it as a real possibility. But nooo way they really kill off Kondo-san.

Btw. this episode made me thinkg: Did we ever see the Emperor? It only occurred to me now that I´m studying Japanese and its history (goddam, watching this anime might confuse me for an upcoming test, lol), and the shogun is only part of the government. Shogun reigns of the shogunate/bakufu, some sort of military leader, if you will. Meanwhile, there´s the emperor/tennou, who´s the "real" leader of the nation (depending on the time period, he might just be a symbol without real power). So, who´s the emperor?

So...I've seen clips of this show around the internet a lot and it seems pretty funny, and I decided to start watching it.

I notice this has a ton of episodes, and the premise is like a shounen but...

Is there any, like, metaplot to this series? Like is there any kind of arc to it? Or is it just jokes?

There are many arcs, and in-between there´s self-contained "fun episodes".

For the record: The beginning drags a bit (unless you enjoy it as is, then good for you). Personally, I became a life-long Gintama-fan once I saw the double-episode 24/25, so I´d recommend watching at least until then.

In the end, there are no bad episodes in Gintama, it´s just that you don´t know the characters in the beginning, so it may feel a bit too random. Power through and you won´t regret it, guaranteed. One of the best anime series of all times. And the serious arcs feature some of the best fights, too.
