Definitely Sasuke, and Shikamaru.

It's pure luck Shika hasn't had his ass handed to him. Besides, he's only faced long distance opponents so he could go hide and think. Any close distance fighter who doesn't give him time to think (Neji, Naruto) would destroy him. But noo, he coincidentally faces Temari and Tayuya. What is it with him facing all these chicks..

In the fandom, Shikamaru seems quite overrated. Altough I love the guy, one, if not my #1, favorite character in the show.

As far as abilities go, I feel that Kakashi is overrated (this is in the anime at this point, note) because his Sharingan leaves him severly weakened and we see him lose Sasuke as a student, as well as not seeing his top capabilities dispalyed.

Also, I feel that Sasuke is hyped up by all the characters in the show (as well as Itachi, though we've never seen him directly face anyone BUT Sasuke).

As for underrated:
Shino
Ino (how long can she control an enemy? Why isn't she on serious spy missions?)
Naruto (yes, they correctly assess that he is an idiot. But the kid is also an unstoppable demon for crying out loud!)

Naruto, naruto, naruto, and more naruto. The show is supposed to be about him. you would think he be top ninja by now. masamuneehs is right, for god sake he has a demon inside of him u would think it would be easer for him to learn atleast couple of jutsu, since he has unlimited source of chakra. I have never seen a main character like him before. If they would cut some of that stupidty off of him maybe the show would get even better then it is right now.

I think Tsunade is way overrated in the anime. She could barely keep up with Orochimaru, who was severely wounded by the way, and somehow she became Hokage. Yes, she's retardedly strong and a great medical ninja, but she doesn't seem to have any of the jutsu necessary to take down badies like Orochimaru and Akatsuki. Jiraiya was a much better choice for Hokage.

well. i think naruto is obviously underrated in the show. Everyone thinks he is stupid, but he is obviously really smart when he does think. Its just that his temper prevents him from thinking things through, that doesnt make him unable to think at all. Overrated is of course sasuke, for obvious reasons. Another one is kakashi. He is supposed to be this tensai ninja trained by the 4th, but he has basically been struggling for the whole series, excluding the fact that he is famous for an eye that isnt even his.

Under rated? Hmm. Chouji and Shino. Neither are given enough attention, especially the latter, and both come from fairly famous families.

Shino seems too cool, and the fact that not much is known about him or even the parameters of his abilties adds to his mystique and allure. I think the use of bugs is too interesting to not highlight more often.

Chouji has been an underdog the entire series, who wasn't thought of much until his bout with Jiroubo. His final speech alone made that entire arc.

I also think Neji is under rated when compared to Sasuke, who would get ruined by the Hyuuga heir.

Well, then at that point Sasuke would need to be clone somewhere closer to the millions to handle something like that.

It depends on whose faster too.. It's been three years, and Neji is somehow a Jounin now, and Sasuke's power is, well, unknown.. When Neji was fighting the Sound/Snake dude, one of the reason he nearly lost was because he wasn't fast enough, even with his abilities..

I'm gonna be the nonconformist here and say that Shino is overrated by fans.

Seriously. He's been in about 2 fights, one of which he got his ass poisoned in. There's a whole lotta hype surrounding the guy and not much to back it up with. 'Cept those damn sexy shades and attitude.

More overrated: Shikamaru - Agree with Azazel. Although he's my favorite character next to Rock Lee, it's only because of luck that he's won many of his fights. He needs to be involved in a fight that can really show off his tactical genious.
Kimimaro - During Kimi's introduction he was WAY too overrated by the show itself. I mean, he was an emotionless badass that could move using only his willpower. AND he was chosen as Oro's original container. Everyone talked so highly about him I nearly peed myself with excitement when he was about to fight. And then...he danced around for a bit, turned into a Haku-clone, and died of an oral period. Jesus...what a letdown.

Underrated: Sakura - People bitch about her way too much imo. Yeah, she cries all the time and is too hung up on Sasuke but she's a semi-decent Ninja otherwise and hasn't done all that much to incite all the ire she gets from "fans"

Everyone else seems to be "rated" just fine, though.

I'm going to say Naruto is underrated by a lot of intelligent people. Overall, he's probably overrated by a bunch of idiots, but I try to avoid them. Most recently what made me think this even more, was the Naruto/Sasuke fight. Specifically, when he was projecting the demon chakra arm and Sasuke was dodging it with the might of his new found sharingan, Naruto needed a way to make the chakra connect. So what does he do? Splashes water and uses it to conceal the approaching chakra project until its too late to react even with the lvl 3 sharingan. He does it again a few seconds later this time using the ground as concealment. I thought that just brilliant, or at least sufficiently clever to not call naruto a combat idiot. Now...If only I can do away with the memory of the Naruto/Kimimaro fight...

There are plenty of examples. The fight against Zabuza where Naruto's plan and its perfect execution were solely responsible for freeing kakashi from the water prison. The fight againt the three mist ninja's in which Naruto used kage bunshin and henge to make copies of his teammates and fight, allowing his real team mates to hide was another example in which naruto's plan was the reason for victory. In the fight against Gaara, Naruto used gaara's preconception of him and an apparently stupid move (the 1000 years of pain) to conceal the exploding tag which damaged gaara to the point that naruto was able to make use of his kage bunshins to actually land blows on gaara. There are others I'm sure, but they're not coming to mind. Naruto's shown plenty of cleverness.

The problem is that people are unable to forgive his moments of bullshit because he's so noisy and is portrayed as an idiot. But when he's serious, he's a contender against anyone.

Sure, they might become Sannin eventually, but just because they have the potential doesn't mean we should say they are currently stronger/better than Neji, whose a -jounin-, yet.

I doubt that Sasuke>Naruto, as that would bring Sasuke close to Orochimaru's strength, and I doubt that Orochimaru would do that as Sasuke may change his mind about the mind transferance. And as of right now, Orochimaru has only seen Naruto's power with one tail, not with the four that he had up against Jiraya, although I doubt that Yamoto will allow him to go that far without stopping him using his (apparent) crazy Bijuu controlling powers.

A) Learn how to quote properly.

D) If there is no question mark, then its not a question, which is why I said I would take it as such.
E) As has been debated before, Itachi is not weaker than Jiriaya. Itachi needed Naruto alive, and said that would be almost impossible with Jiriaya and Naruto present, which is why they tricked him into going away, or tried to. If Jiriaya could've defeated Itachi, he would have done so by now.
F) I never said Itachi was stronger than Jiriaya or vice versa.

Edit: Overrated, I'd have to say Sasuke in the manga (since every character in the manga talks him up) and Neji (since even I talk him up as well as everyone else. Underrated? Well, I'd go with just about any female Genin from Konoha. They all get shafted in fights, but they can get close and kill just about any male. Orochimaru and Itachi don't count, since one likes little boys and the other is gay, as proved in the pic above. i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif

BTW, It's not like that is the kyuubi's full power, it's kinda limited to the container it happens to be in at the moment. If all nine tails were released, I bet it would still be limited because of the seal and Naruto's body. Add to the fact that it has no physical form when he releases the tails also kinda screws it up.
Edit: Not normally fond of these types of jokes, but people bring out the best (in most cases, worst) in me.

I just wish for once naruto has the upper advantage over sasuke. all we've seen is sasuke, sasuke and more sasuke. still man 3 tails is a lot for the likes of sasuke. the reason I'm pissed is that we've just got intoduced to the 3 tail and it's already has been surpassed by sasuke. it would of been better if kishi would of said it in a short fight between sasuke and naruto. that way we would see more then enough action of 3 tail, since it's gonna take a little longer for sasuke to be introduced. but oh well wut can we do, kishi f***ed up. oh shino is underrated too. we only saw him like 4 to 5 times.

Well, we only have Orochimaru's word for it. He's been known to lie before, so he could be lying now. I swear, I think he's just trying to piss Naruto off to see how far Naruto can go with the Kyuubi's power. But if it turns out to be true, I'll be pissed off as well. All that shit to stay weaker than Sasuke, pfft. What a waste of 3 years.
Edit: Unless, of course, he gave Sasuke a better seal, or he learned how to get the ms. Still, I wonder how the ms would work against the 4th tail...

I think Sasuke is overated emotionaly. He thinks he has it so bad having witnessed his parents being murdered by his older brother Itachi. And all he does is cry about it all the time like a Drama Queen. I think Naruto is stronger then Sasuke since atleast naruto doesnt cry about being alone. I think Sasuke is overated also becuase he doesnt noticed he had the joy of atleast knowing his parents and love were as Naruto only recently had gotten Iruka Sensei to like him, and Kakashi sensei. and that is why i think Sasuke is overated. =^_^=

I would say that Sasuke is the most overrated character in Naruto, Simply due to the fact that THERE IS NO SINGLE EPISODE BESIDES FILLERS THAT MENTIONS HIM! Besides him, Shikamaru, would be second. How many times can they place this guy in a fight with a woman and call him a Ninja Genius? I mean, it works in Hentai, but not in the anime.

Shikamaru is called a genius because he uses his brain to fight people much stronger than he is.

Okay, maybe that's stating the obvious, but is it really so bad to put emphasis on a character who uses a bit of intelligence? When this whole story started there were a lot of tactical battles. Now it's Kyuubi this and Rasengen that with plenty of bloodlines and Dojutsu thrown in.

I didn't mean to come off as Sexist, I simply meant that it seems to me that Shikamaru has been hyped up over fighting less calibre fighters in comparison to those that are also dubbed "Genius" aka-Neji or Garaa. BTW, that line was a typo. I meant to say that there is no single episode besides fillers that Doesn't mention Sasuke in some fashion. I mean, Akatsuki and Orochimaru are the main villains and yet they are mentioned Less than Sasuke. Does that make sense?

And, said girl was said to have been at least Chuunin level during the Chuunin Exams, when Shikamaru fought her.

He is overrated amongst fans, not in the show, just as Shino is, but I still consider him a genius.

Although, with a show of mostly morons and idiots, I suppose it does not take much to merit such a title.

he is called a genius because he is a genius. Most of the time when the term "genius" is used in naruto it refers to someone with a lot of natural, inborn power and ninja talent. When they call skikamaru a genius they mean it literally, he has an exeptionally high IQ which makes him a genius, there are no if ands or buts about it with shikamaru, he is the dicionary definition of a genius.

Underrated: majority of taijutsu users. They should be the strongest type of ninjas in the show. Think about it. They're able to land punches and kicks and such to their opponents at times. Why can't they just have a kunai or something in their hand so that they can deliver a deathblow? This is just against ninjas who they have to kill though. This would also ruin the idea of having jutsus too, but this is just in another perspective.

Who is the most underrated character in Naruto? Simple Sasuke.... Yes Sasuke. After reading all the posts, I just cannot believe how you can say that he is overrated. He has the Sharingan, the ability to know predict the opponent's moves, something that makes him dangerous. The other one is the smart guy that can cast shadows, Shika-something. That guy haven't fight anoyone other than girls but I think he can beat almost anybody if he really is that smart.

Overrated: I think new Hokage, Tsunade. She is suppodesly so strong but couldn't beat Oro when they fought, something that just don't make sense to me....

Tsunade had Shizune. Jiraiya was far more handicapped than Tsunade, and he held Orochimaru off just fine. I've already said it in this thread: Tsunade just doesn't have the jutsu necessary to take on baddies like Orochimaru and Akatsuki.

One should never compare Shizune to Kabuto...The skill difference is immense. As for leadership vs 'strength', I think Tsunade has more strength than leadership capability, but not by much. Tsunade's main talent is in her driving force to do something, and her relation to the First. She was holding her own quite well, I thought, despite her injuries. Besides, most of that fight was Godzilla esque...

In the Kakashi Gaiden, it looked to me as if the 4th moved that fast because of his own speed, unless I'm missing something. Once when he rescued Kakashi from the Rock guy, and again when he appeared behind the same guy and killed him. I didn't notice any kunai being flung about in either of those situations.

Well, if you see fanart of the 4th holding Hinata's hand, that's probably just adult Naruto (roll-eyes). I find one of the 4th's techniques overrated, his lighting flash jutsu where he could transport instantly to anywhere one of his kunai are. I mean, isn't that just an advanced form of Kawamiri? I know he could travel vast distances in an instant, but the fact that his kunai HAS to be there for it to work seems kind of lame. The only way I could see that useful is if you're stuck somewhere.

The kunai has nothing to do with 4th's technique. The kunai that he gave Kakashi was specially made. So when it was used 4th would know that its taken out of its place and propably being used in a attack so he could reach Kakashi. It was just like an alarm.
