When I was growing up, my mom liked to tell me stories of her girl scout camping days. In woods that had bears in them, they'd go on hikes, and make sure to be singing most of the time.
Out of curiosity, was it a black or a brown bear?

You should have brought some pepper spray or bear mace. I friend got sprayed by bear mace once. It was potent.

If a black bear attacks you, it's because you've either startled it or you look like a potentially tasty meal. Making yourself big and noisy and trying to scare it off or fight it off is the only way to go.
If a brown bear attacks you, she's not planning on eating you, but you may have invaded her space. In which case, playing dead may be the safest route.
In either case, bear mace/pepper spray may work against humans, but it's pretty unreliable against actual bears...

According to snopes.com (not sure of their reliability but I think it's a website dedicated to exposing internet rumors), the dude ad campaign was ended as all such campaigns must come to an end, not because the actor had been busted for drugs. I learned that men's ties are expensive. It's the first time I've gone out and bought a tie. I'm going to a friend's party, and the dress code demanded a tie. To my surprise, skinny ties aren't that common around the place. Most still stock a heap of the broad-ended types.
So I picked out one that I thought was quite decent, and had to cough up $60. It's probably no big deal when ties are concerned, but it's the first time I've paid so much for something smaller than a jacket.

Of all the things you can drink, canned ice tea (like Lipton Brisk or Arizona) is the worst thing for your teeth. It's not so much the sugar as the variety of additives. It's around twice as bad as any type of cola (Pepsi, Coke, etc), and something on the order of 30 times as bad as coffee or brewed tea.
What was more surprising is the best thing you can drink aside from milk? Root Beer. Coffee and brewed tea are about the same.

Carbonated drinks are quite bad because the high acid contents soften the outer layer of your teeth. Thus, the worst thing of all you can ever do is to drink carbonated soft drink and then go brush your teeth right away. It means you will wash off the outer layer of your teeth before it can harden again.
At least if you believe what you learn at the dentist...

To keep their muscles warm. The temperature difference between the water and the air is enough to cause muscle tightness.
Also, I learned that reheating a pizza+box in a 200 Celcius oven results in a very burnt, and nearly combusting box. Good pizza though.

I guess the moral isn't to stop experimenting, it's to take the necessary precautions and foresee the possible consequence of your actions. It isn't, of course, always foreseeable.
So what happened to the guy in the end? Is he in it for manslaughter or murder?

You would think it would have occurred to her to ask if he had any psychological problems before she started experimenting on him, and I wonder if she had a roommate, boyfriend or someone else living with her just in case, because no matter how I look at it experimenting with a stranger that you live with, especially if you're alone, is just stupid.

Nagging is a quite a powerful tool that ought not be underestimated. I'm pretty sure that given enough information on just about anyone, I can nag them until they either kill me, or kill themselves. It may change the jury's idea if they find out that a psychologist was trying to do an experiment ( with a person aho lives right next door, who comes home from a stressful day at work), where she made him feel horrible.
Depending on what's happened to the guy or how long she had been doing it.. well, it really can change things. But, everyone's supposed to be logical at all times, unless there's too much stress or temporary insanity.

The Star Spangled Banner is a bad national anthem. I know I'm not the first to say it. We've got a lot of easier songs.
- It is a very technically demanding song. Not any drunkard can sing it and feel all patriotic about it (looking at you with envy La Marseillaise). An octave and a half!
- Embarrassingly enough, I don't know with confidence all the words to the part usually sung, and it's pretty obvious a lot of "professional" singers at sporting events and the like don't either. I doubt much of anyone knows that there are three more verses, much less the words to them (I didn't until I checked Wikipedia to make sure).

Fainting can be a weird experience. You start off by losing your vision slowly, then your hearing becomes "muffled," then you lose your balance and strength in both your arms and legs, and finally, your breathing becomes heavier. As time passes, you regain your vision, but your hearing becomes "amplified" for a while (it returns to normal), and the after effects still remains, like your weakened state.

That's not at all how fainting went for me. It was more like waking up from a nap.
I was sitting in a chair waiting for a nurse to stick an IV in my arm, but she kept missing the vein. Soon there was blood everywhere, and the next thing I knew I had forgotten where I was and was dreaming of falling through a gray abyss. Then I felt hands underneath me as I jolted awake, and as my vision became clearer I saw several nurses lifting me back onto my chair.
Felt like I had been asleep for hours, but really it was just the 2 and a half seconds it took for me to slump forward out of my chair and fall towards the floor.

Yeah, most of my passing out is needle-related too. Generally, I'm ok if I don't watch, but if I see the needle, it's over. Last year, I had to get an IV for the first time, and I knew before they started that it was going to be troublesome. I knew I'd be fine if I just ignored it and didn't think about it. So they put in the IV, and left my by myself in a little room saying they'd be in soon to get me. I could feel that IV in my arm, but there was no way I was going to look down at it to confirm its existence. My inner monologue went something along the lines of...
Don't think about the IV....don't think about it....think about something else....like knitting...what am I going to knit next? Maybe I'll design a hat with- there's an IV in my arm crap CRAP you thought about it, don't think about it....what are these grey spots in front of my eyes? Noooooo, don't think about the IV....something else, think about- my ears are ringing....losing consciousness....maybe I'll be ok if I lie down, I think this chair reclines- crap, don't look down! Don't look at the arm...ok, breathe, think about kittens
...and so on. I managed to flag down a nurse to get the recliney mechanism on my chair figured out. I'm usually fine with blood and injuries, as long as they're not my own.

How to eat Nigiri-Sushi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushi#Nigiri-zushi) & sashimi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi):
Nigiri-Sushi: Dipping the topping only into your soy sauce, then place it in your mouth upside-down. ie, fish down.
Sashimi: similar method, place your preferred amount of wasabi on one side, dip the other into your soy sauce and place it on your tongue, wasabi side down. Order of taste should be wasabi->fish->soy sauce
Soaking in soy sauce with the rice, and forming a mix of wasabi-soyu paste is supposed to be incorrect. Many people do it that way, myself included.

Silence tends to make extroverted people uncomfortable the same way the that introverted people can get uncomfortable or even tired by extended conversations.
My friends and I still enjoy annoying the hell out of one of our friends by abruptly cutting off the conversation simultaneously. After about two-three minutes he'd completely flip out and start babbling nonsense to kick start a conversation again. It works best in a car.

Never, EVER, think that there's only one path to life. I had to learn that the hard way when I decided that this path might be just for me, and me only. Being stubborn isn't a good thing, as you'll eventually lead yourself down a spiralling path of shame and hardship, represented by your ignorant self and wallow in your own pity. Take other paths and express yourself in the future, as you'll be gratefully embraced by those that can look up to you.

That's a life lesson that a lot of people I've known over the years took entirely too long to learn... minus the sappiness.
I don't know how many people I know who stuck with the wrong major in college for 3, 4 years longer than they should have, until they eventually failed out of the program entirely. But at least 5 come to mind, and they all ended up walking away from college for a while with tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt and nothing to show for it.

Some of us just really screw ourselves over with the majors we choose. I have been going to college for 5 years, I tried to get my journalism degree but that was just personally a bad year, and I realized I hated journalism. When I flunked out 2 years after I moved to the state university, I took a couple years off and came back to major in CIT in January, having to pay out of pocket so I can get financial aid again next time around. I am enjoying it though; for a while I thought I just wasn't a college "type" but that's simply unacceptable when you have no skillset or job connections.. I'm not going to make a couple hundred a week slaving for the man like I did in my time off.

Although, he has got a pretty clear plan ahead of him after he graduates, so it seems he's fully aware of the lesson Nadouku described. Sometimes you just gotta do things to get them done.

So far, I've only felt about a fraction of these symptoms, like increased appetite and hyperactivity. The doctor tells me to take these to help against my inflammatory disease, or the severe allergy that I'm going through right now. It's kind of helping, since they are slowly clearing away.

Today i learned how to change strings in Floyd Rose bridge hard way, damn i had guitar tuned perfectly and now surprise - i have to lower the springs of the bridge because tremolo would not work. Once again tuning, and surprise i have to move bridge a bit higher because strings when strummed would hit frets. Once again tuning.
With experimenting to find correct way to do this it took only 3h.
Next time I'm going to use the same strings so i will change them one by one and i won't have to rise/lower bridge and change springs tension.
If you want to do it and not waste much time just:
-remove and attach strings
-set up springs in such way that bridge is parallel to the body when there is tension on the strings
-move bridge up to prevent strings from hitting frets and make buzzing noise
-tune(EADGBe for standard tuning - and make sure to fine tune the bridge so on 12th fret you get same notes but octave higher)
- repeat tune until all strings are tuned perfectly
and remember to tune by ear and only then correct using tuner.

So far, I've only felt about a fraction of these symptoms, like increased appetite and hyperactivity. The doctor tells me to take these to help against my inflammatory disease, or the severe allergy that I'm going through right now. It's kind of helping, since they are slowly clearing away.
Yeah, those work slowly but surely. I've had that one before to get rid of my full body rash I got from a drink once.
Drugs list LOTS of side effects, but it tells you nothing about how likely you are to get them. Before they're let onto the market they go through stringent testing, involving perhaps a thousand guinea pigs subjects or more in some cases. If any side effect is even evident, sometimes even if just reported, such as increased appetite, it goes on the list.
What you've got there are some of the more common ones. (I think common being 5% or more subjects reported that side effect?). There are scarier (but much rarer) ones too they didn't tell you about. :p
But I was on it, and I'm fine......sort of

Today i learned how to change strings in Floyd Rose bridge hard way, damn i had guitar tuned perfectly and now surprise - i have to lower the springs of the bridge because tremolo would not work. Once again tuning, and surprise i have to move bridge a bit higher because strings when strummed would hit frets. Once again tuning.
With experimenting to find correct way to do this it took only 3h.
I'm so glad I don't ever have to change my bass strings. The more I play, the rounder and thumpier the sound gets. It's beautiful because what you described sounds like such a hassle.
Also, I just learned a new Stones bass line. I put it on my youtube. Check it, y'all.

This was actually a while back, but it's good to keep an extra copy or two of anything. I tried to print my paper off, but the bloody thing didn't print at all. It just sat there, chilling, and constantly spamming error messages. So then I make changes to my paper, save it, and... my file disappears. I gacked, but remembered that I kept another one elsewhere and rushed back to retrieve. Would have been bad if I didn't turn that paper in on time.

Shopping never became so educational before. I would always just throw anything that seems good into my cart and buy it all out. Now, I have to shop conservatively, and I've taken note of things that happen to be interesting:
A celery in the fresh isle section has more calories than say a packaged celery in the same section. However, this might be due to the nutritional values that it gets instead of the packaged one, where it just gets treated with... God knows what. Comparing alike things is the best way to save your money too because the packaged celery versus individual celery is not marginally big, but it's good enough to save about three dollars. (I.E. the 12-packed celery costs $5.99 while the individual celery costs $0.25). Not that it matters to me much since I buy the individual celery, but it makes me wonder why they would sell it at a higer price.

Is the packaged version washed? That's probably why. Otherwise I have no idea why it'd sell for 100% higher.
Food in general has costed quite a lot. We get frozen broccoli now rather than fresh. It's washed, and tastes the same - maybe slightly softer, which isn't at all bad.

Yea, I guess that could be the reason. But, you could get the same results if you manually washed it before doing something to it, unless it was some form of mechanical washing that couldn't be done with human hands and hot water. :o

Haha, Bill. I doubt the version number of MSN was even half of what it is today when I used it for the first time, and already back then that function existed.
Since I don't really use Windows Media Player, I don't know much about it. I did find it funny, though, that a few days ago when I tried to use it, it wanted to upgrade itself to version 11, and downloaded some 30MB of stuff and seemingly went through installation - and finished it by listing one item that couldn't be installed: Windows Media Player 11...
Still, when I launched it again yesterday, it seemed to be version 11 alright. MS is at it again, for sure.

Wow. Better late than never, I guess is how things go. You know how them Mummies and Daddies always tell kids not to rub their eyes and stuff?
It's not that bad, but it's got its roots. Supposedly the eyes aren't very permeable to antibodies and all that other immune system thingies. That's why you won't need anti-rejection drugs after a cornea transplant. On the downside, infections are nasty.
/things I learned today.

XD My worst habit is rubbing my eyes. It's annoying and smudges my make-up. =/
Hmmm cornea transplant...just thinking that makes go all 'Ooooooooh' at our technology. *is a nerd* But yes, infections are crazy nasty. And you can get them just randomly. (and apparently, you WILL get them if you share contact lenses)
And thanks. ^^ Well...let's see...firstly, there's the fact that your vision is 100%. I read somewhere that glasses don't give you the correct, realistic vision. That things appear...smaller? Or something. (it's been a long time since I wore glasses...)
Secondly, the look on people's faces when they hear you wear contacts. YOU? WEAR GLASSES? WOW NO WAI!!!!1111 :p
The downside of contacts, is you gotta change them according to what type they are( monthly, daily, etc) And it's expensive.
Also, they're very very delicate. My cousin bought her grey contacts, and on the day she bought them, she was handling them(and she has LONG nails) and it just broke in half. It's like...250 a lens. A LENS. ONE LENS. That's 250 GONE! I shed tears for that wasted money!! D:
Also, it causes Dry Eyes. Which seriously, is a pain. Constant irritation in your eyes even when you're not wearing your contacts. (I'm getting this fixed tomorrow...finally) and you'll end up using artificial tears for awhile. (depends on you)
Then there's...the whole...natural elements. Wind is terrible. If it blows stuff into your lens, your lens will continue to irritate your eye until removed. =/ So going into the wilderness is a major pain. (unless you're prepared)
Uncleansed water, when exposed to your lens, will be absorbed and then the lens is PAINFUL. PAIN. PAIN. Same applies to dirt, except for absorbed...it'll just cause irritation continously. AND...no going underwater with lenses. They absorb water...so...in fact, it's recommend you don't swim with them but whatever. I do.
On a side note, when I first began using contacts, I could never insert them quickly or properly, so I'd put them in, and never ever take them out. I slept with them, etc. Which was a very bad thing. =/ And I'd over-use them and not change them when I'm supposed to. At some point, one contact broke and I had proper vision in only one eye. LEARN FROM MY STUPIDITY. (Looking back on it now...such a dunce)
Lens can be great. =) And since you only need them sometimes, I'd recommend them if you want. All the horrible things normally happen to people who wear them constantly.
But recently...I've been missing glasses...just for the weekend maybe...or Jr time...=/
I think Junior would look freakin' adorable in glasses.
People are too careless with contact lens care. Basically you're putting your vision at risk by not cleaning them and wearing them properly.
Tch, oh thanks Ani. <3
And yes, I was too careless and now it's biting me in the ass. Contacts Lenses are serious business.
Vision at risk...heh, in fact, if not treated, Dry Eyes can lead to loss of vision*apparently*. (however, Dry Eyes can even be caught by non-lens wearers)
/end of long long post. man, it's good to be back.

Haha, I get that too.
My friend used to brag about how he never needed to buy new lenses. "I've been wearing them for half a year now". I don't doubt that it was true. Then he got an infection and had to use glasses for over two months I think.
They are indeed really expensive.. I use them all the time(month lenses), and only take them out once a week or so. A couple of weeks ago I had forgotten to do it for about a month though, and he showed me that my eyes were at "stage 1" of 4-5 stages of irritation or something. I used to have -1,5( I think), but within the last couple of months it has gotten worse.. now it is -2,5 on one eye and -2 on the other.. I sure hope it doesn't get even worse.
Anyway, on topic.
Today I learned that you will get spammed with speedhacker comments constantly if you beat someone in darkfall that considers himself skilled. Then I hid behind a tree and he claimed I had teleported away..... I don't even lag bad, I feel for the ones who do.

So let's say you wanted a picture of a sunset with a particular color scheme, you search "sunset" and then filter by pink or teal or whatever. It's pretty neat, especially if you're searching for an image that's "just so".
Although obviously it comes with its own set of moral implications (http://images.google.com/images?q=people&gbv=2&hl=en&sa=G&imgcolor=white), so use it responsibly.

Its not really like me to share anything about myself with anyone but since I mentioned the situation with my mother before I think I'm obligated to mention this in case any of you actually cared. Besides it might actually help me clear my head. Awhile back I mentioned that my mom had an aneurysm. She has been going to various doctors every week since then, she has something like 2-3 appointments per week. Anyway she recently did some ct scans and had yet another MRI done, this time with contrast time which as it turns out she is severely allergic to.
Today she was supposed to go in for her results and after spending the last few days arguing about whether she wants me to come with her or not or whether she would even go today instead of waiting till her appointment next week, because they never find anything anyway. She decided that she would indeed go today and managed to convince me that I didn't need to come with her (that is the last time that happens).
Her appointment was about noon today and I was just sitting around waiting to hear from her. I noticed it was getting late much later than she usually returns home and I opted out of calling her like I usually would because she hates when people check up on her. Anyway about 5:30 she calls me and says she is on her way home and every thing went well so I go about my usual business and figure I'll ask her the details when she gets home. So she comes home and she tries to act like everything is fine but I can immediately tell something is different and I ask her how it went and she shrugs it off and says she is tired and she'll talk to me about it later. I understand no biggie, so I asked her if she ate anything and offered her some food, water, etc being my usual self.
Naturally she says she can take of herself and goes about getting her self some food so I just watch her and smile like I usually do. Right in the middle of eating she freaking says to me she has a brain tumor. Seriously she is chewing food and telling me about her day as if nothing happened and then she just says I have a brain tumor. So yeah today I learned my mom has a brain tumor, one that apparently has been there for years and is probably responsible for the most unexplainable of the unexplainable symptoms she has had for the last ten years or so and for some reason until now has been missed.
So yeah it looks like 2009 is going to be another one of those years. Already it resembles 2008. A year in which my girlfriend nearly died and was hospitalized for quite some time and then unable to get out of bed for a great deal more time after that. My dad actually got sick enough to go to a doctor, which is a first ever because that man never gets sick, my grandfather nearly died, my mom's best friend who happens to be my sister's god mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and my dad's best friend discovered a large possibly cancerous mass growing in his intestines. So uh yeah.

Kraco
Mon, 05-04-2009, 03:04 AM
They do seem to have removed protein surprisingly much from that new one. Well, it's not like a normal human would need huge amounts of protein at all meals unless you are still a growing kid, a bodybuilder, or regenerating a new arm to replace a lost one, but it's still a bit surprising, though it does correlate with the reduction of meat and dairy products, since those are major protein sources.
And no, Xelbair, they don't create these to try to affect the sales of specific products, though I can guarantee they would be very happy if the general sales of vegetables actually did rise...

When you take a look at the pyramid, you understand it's influenced by studies made on the mediteranean meals.
The first one would be only slightly influenced by the Okinawaïn meals.
Thing is, all of this is almost bullshit.
No one know for sure how a population will react to a change in the ways of eating, in the long term.
It's not because we study what the eldest of today eat, and try to apply that to younger generations, we'll reduce health problems.
There are too many variables to take into account, those of the past: those elders were probably gifted in their genes, they evaded most of the threats of their time etc...
And there are variables in the future:
What is the impact of pesticides, pollution etc?
The problem with those pyramids is that they create a profile and if there's a major flaw in that profile, you're screwed!
Also, even a very small error becomes a huge threat in 20-40 or 60 years.
What should we do then?
Well be more open with what we eat and try many things.
Lots of variety
We have also on a personal level to try to understand what is good for us and what isn't.
For example I can't have lots of olive oil I do not digest well... I can't have milk based products, peppers etc, things other people will eat with no problems at all.
The other aspect is pleasure.
I don't care if my way of eating is to kill me in the end, if it's a quick and painless death that is.
But since I eat 3 times a day, I want it to be an enjoyable experience. So I try to educate my tastes by trying lots of things, colors etc.
Opening a box, press a button and eat isn't my way of doing things.
Sauces, salt, etc?
When you learn using less of them, at first it's strange, then you start to be more demanding in the quality of the products you buy, even if it means less... and you start enjoying their real taste.
Also, there are countless combinations of herbs and products that do not even need "artificial" elements to be added to be good.
It's a long process, but a nice one. Also it helps if the one sharing your life is good at cooking :D

I'm thinking about buying this book. It's a collaboration effort between Dr. John Berardi (a famous nutritionist and bodybuilder) and some gourmet chef. I read enough about nutrition, so I trust their opinion over a pyramid's any day.
I am happy that the new pyramid got rid of the 6-11 servings of carbohydrates a day though. Oh yeahhh, lots of pasta and rice for dinner. So healthy.

I've been cutting down on my rice intake too. It's sort of weird though, working against the traditional (and historically poorer) Asian diet where rice is the staple food. Everything else is an extra. Not weird for me personally, but for the more traditionally minded. Like I'm "cheating" by eating less rice in proportion to my capacity so I can eat more meats&veges instead. We're not poor, but the more economical the better of course.
Eating less rice/noodles/pasta while keeping the same level of vege/meat intake usually results in my snacking at 11pm though...

Basically any vegetables, casein proteins (like milk or even lean beef), or the right kinds of fats are good for you up to at least hour before bed. To my knowledge, at least.

You're actually pretty close. It's recommended that people eat 6 meals a day, or 1 meal every 2 to 3 hours. I did that last summer and fall, eating about 600 calories at each meal and I went from 145 pounds to 185. Substances called "free radicals" are produced when your body functions normally, as a result of metabolism of compounds. Free radicals are unstable, and so like to go around attacking things to form something more stable. Sometimes, this can lead to a chain reaction where radicals attack to make more radicals etc, while sometimes two radicals can combine and form a stable product. Either way, they do nothing constructive, to my knowledge. The damage on your system by these radicals is called Oxidative Stress - because Oxygen itself can commonly form this highly reactive product.
Anti-oxidants are things that can mop up these free radicals, reducing cellular damage and oxidative stress.
Reducing cellular damage = feeling better makes sense to me. ;)

Ahh yes, that makes sense, thx :D
and Xan, I would need more then 600cals per meal, that would only land me a total of 3600 a day, that's not enough to make me gain weight, I would need at least double.

Well I was just estimating that, but you never want to eat more than about 300 calories over what you usually would on a regular basis. If you want to gain lean mass, a gain of more than at most 2 pounds per week would have you looking like this poor kid (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=3980303) in no time. That is, unless you're Michael Phelps and exercise for a living.

Lol that's pretty bad, but yeah I do exercise but not a lot, only like 4 hours a week, but combine that with my really high metabolism and I would really need a lot of calories to gain any sort of significant weight.

I've been having difficulty losing any excess Fat. MY scale (although surely inaccurate it is consistent) always has my body fat % between 19-20.5%
Try as I might I can't seem to get this number lower. I've quit drinking except for a few beers on the weekend. Cook all my own food, (ie no more fast food). Have pretty much cut fat out of my diet, and ride my bike around at least 3 hours/day M-F.
But I'll be damned if I can get my body fat down. Since Feb 17th I've ridden 1600 miles. Though I was eating a lot of crap when I started, I don't anymore. I don't mind gaining some weight, in fact it's probably inevitable if I can keep up my commute. But does anyone have suggestions for slimming down?
Why you ask? Why do I care? I can increase my power/weight ratio my getting stronger or losing weight. However just straight weight loss will probably also mean smaller muscles. I'm guestimating (completely unfounded guess) that the scale is 3-4% off so I'm really around 16-17% body fat percentage. I want to get down to around 8% (possibly lower) so that would be going from 32 lbs of fat on me to 15 pounds of fat. If I could lose 15 pounds of fat, and maintain all other fitness I could become much much faster.

I have a friend who says this when I asked him why he didn't defend himself at work (people were accusing him of something):
"Don't ever fight back. Always assume that everyone's right and you're wrong. You can try to defend yourself, but you'll probably end up getting fired. This is real life, not some imaginary wonderworld. Just go in and get out."

That actually happened to me at work the other day. The manager kept tell me that this and that happened and to do it right next time, when obviously by colleague was the one who's completely out of it that night. Well, it was obvious to me anyway, since I was working with him, and I actually corrected a few mistakes myself.
Meh, you just listen. What I do do is relay the manager's words back to him. Like "Oh, Jason told us to watch out for X, cuz WE stuff X up." I leave it up to him if he wants to own up or not.

Since I was young, probably around 7, I've noticed that breathing through my left nostril takes significantly more effort than breathing through my right. If breathing through my right is normal, then taking a breath through the left is akin to taking a breath through the cusps of your hand -> noisy and restricting, requiring effort.
I never knew why, nor did I really bother to find out. All I know is that it hasn't always been this way, though the exact time of occurrence has long been forgotten. If I put my finger up my nose, I can put it no higher than the first joint of any finger. I assumed my left nostril was somehow narrower.
It results in, not loud, but heavy breathing when I sleep. On a day to day basis, it doesn't bother me though, so I've always lived with this fact.
Today, I got in front of a mirror and shined a flashlight up my nose for no other reason than to satisfy my curiosity of how much nasal hair I have. I looked up my right, and found, contrary to my expectations, that nasal hair isn't that dense at all. The nasal canal is actually rather spacious, taking the shape of a slit. The sides are lined with moist tissue, and the occasional boogie.
Interesting. So I take a look up my left.
And was I surprised.
As I've said, my left nostril's status is rarely, if ever, on my mind. So taking a peek up there, it was quite the WTF-moment when I see, about 2.3cm (~1inch) up this slit of a canal was this red...thing.
The first thing that came to mind was something off Starcraft. Sitting 2cm up my nose was the reason for my heavy breathing for the last ten years. A red, fleshy outgrowth attached to the top-left left nasal canal, taking up 65-85% of the airway.
Putting my finger up as far as it'll go, I give it a gentle push. Moist and soft. From past experience, I self-diagnosed it as a cyst. (I had one in my mouth before).
I'll probably mention it to the doctor if I ever see him for some other reason. I could try a nasal spray, but surgery is out of the question. It's stable in size, it's not bothering me, it can stay.
So yeah, today I learned I've got a cyst up my nose, the reason for my heavy(ier) breathing.

Why is surgery out of the question? You are too big a Starcraft fan?

No, it just hurts :o A needle's still required for local anesthetics. Plus, the chances of getting rid of it is (only) ~90%.
There's no pain or inconvenience, so weighing it up with all that, I can't see why I'd bother. I'll probably still see him just to rule out cancer or something :p.

Hmm, that must be scary to see a red, moist cyst in your left nostril. Hope it gets fixed!

Dear God, that is absolutely disgusting. Your description of it makes me imagine it worse than it really is. I would have freaked the hell out if I found that up my nose and probably would have tried to get it out myself.
I hope it's not too much of a bother for you. I wouldn't be able to sit still knowing that was inside my face.

That Total Recall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100802/), while an awesome action movie, is actually much deeper than I thought the first several times I saw it.
If you view the entire film after Quaid goes to Rekall Corp. assuming that it takes place as one huge delusion, the movie takes a much darker turn. The director and Schwarzenegger confirm it several times during the audio commentary from the 2001 DVD. The characters mention huge parts of the plot mid-film no less than three times. It adds a huge amount of depth to the film that wasn't there if you simply view it as a good adventure flick. The end of the movie even fades to white as opposed to the normal black in support of this darker vision.
Not to mention the pretty amazing animatronics and miniature effects used for a film produced in 1989 (released in '90-91). There is actually quite a bit of Mise en scène (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinematic_techniques#Mise_en_sc.C3.A8ne) in the cinematography as well.
It's nice to return to things you once viewed just one way and look at them in another light.

Today I learned that the famous squeal from Cypress Hill's Insane in the Brain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwxbsVd15-I) was sampled from a horse.
About 3 seconds into this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8_0c4PmKdw

I always assumed it was a record scratch or some other generated sound effect. Also you could guess the same thing for House of Pain's Jump Around (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwQbPgouUYo), but you'd be wrong. That one apparently comes from a Prince song.
