People would rep me if they like what I post not because I ask them.
That's the idea, see? Now you're getting it! You have learned something from all of this :).
Oh yeah, and to get back on topic, I've learned that ... umm ... there's a job posting for a fulltime sysadmin that almost exactly matches my qualifications and is like 2 miles away, but since I don't have a car, that 2 miles is a bit too far.
I never really expected to feel trapped by my lack of transportation... but here I am, and that's what I've got.

Hmm.....I wonder if Gunei pigs and Rabbits work like that.....Lets try it out. =)
Oh, and Today I learned that if I put alot of dust together in a pile and put it in front of my younger brothers computer while hes sleeping that teh dust gets caught in all his fans and makes his graphics card overheat to 91 degrees and made green spots in Battlefield 2 appear on his monitor. =D

You should at least have a bicycle. Nothing wrong with biking to work.

Mon, 03-13-2006, 02:11 PM
^ That is, unless you live someplace where there is a lot of snow in winter. Because as fun as it may seem, riding your bike on a sheet of ice with cars around you is really not.
complich8
Mon, 03-13-2006, 04:14 PM
yeah, that's the problem.
The place with the job posting is only 2 miles away, but it's 2 miles of bike-unfriendly highway... and beyond that, it's north central Indiana (an hour north of Indy)... snow is definitely hit-or-miss in winter. Winters are typically very cold, and in the 6 of them I've spent here I've seen 3 have more than 2 feet of snow/ice on the ground for a substantial part of the winter. Summers are typically hot and humid, and I'd be hesitant to say that riding a bike a couple miles on the highway when it's 95 with a heat index of 110 is a "good idea"...
But yeah, I don't have a bike anyway. I've been wanting one for a while, but I'm huge, and it's hard to find a bike that claims to be heavy-duty enough to support the sort of giant beast that I am :p.

s'true.
But even if I weren't, I'm also 6'8 and pretty heavily muscled. If I lost every ounce of fat on my body, I'd still weigh around 275.
Actually, I'm a fair bit below my peak weight these days, and I would probably not horribly crush a mountain bike, as long as I didn't try to do anything too stupid (like ... jumping, or hitting curbs hard). But those things are kinda expensive, and campus is more pedestrian-friendly than bike-friendly. I'd probably end up leaving the bike home more often than not anyway...

Never get on a full suspension bike. A 300 lb guy once sat on mine and it was never the same afterwards.

my freshman year, I borrowed my roommate's $1500 bike ... it was one of those suspension-type bikes. It survived fine...
But yeah, I wouldn't bank on it in general ... seems like a bad idea.
For today's lesson, I learned that when you're in Indiana, it can be sunny and 70 at 1 pm and cloudy and 40 at 4:30 pm the same day... so never trust the weather in Indiana by looks alone. This supports the well-known local saying, "Don't like the weather here? Just wait a few minutes, and it'll change".
I also learned that I'm in better shape than I was a couple months ago, and can run the distance from my job to my apartment (about a quarter mile), given proper motivation (such having to get home in a very windy 40-degree afternoon in a t-shirt and sandals).
These two things are ... somehow related.

Today I learned that the reason British and Canadians use the 'our' ending in words like 'colour' and 'honour' is that Samuel Johnson arbitrarily decided this would be the standard when he wrote his dictionary. And I learned the reason the Americans use 'or' endings is because Webster wrote the dictionary that served as the basis for standardizing the language there and he hated the British.

Not that I'm complaining, I'm just curious where the accounts went. I also learned that if I print out Terra's pic and post it on my cubicle wall, people stop popping in so often. ;)

Step two: Type
Step three: Immediately after the last ] Type the NAME you want the link to appear as
Step four: Type [/url Close it with a ]
[URL="http://forums.gotwoot.net/misc.php?do=bbcode#url"]LIST OF ALL THE FORUM CODES! ( and then paste the link here. Close it with a )
Edit: Ero, I did see that you know how to make links, but I hope this will teach others how to (it took me awhile to learn myself)

Yep, the migration itself didn't lose members. I decided that I would prune accounts, to get a more accurate representation of the forum environment as we have it right now.
I pruned accounts as follows: accounts with zero posts that hadn't logged in in greater than 180 days (1/2 year), and accounts with only one post that hadn't logged in in greater than 2 years (because of the great gotwoot forum crash that would have lost all of their posts). If you happen to run into any posts by "Guest" or "Anonymous" ... well, my "single-post" heuristic was probably not perfect. Such is life.
I'm debating rebuilding the post stats to reflect the actual number of posts in the database, but I'm sure with the whole mut/krb account deletion drama a while back, it would really dramatically impact people's post counts. The purist in me says "fuck post counts, I want database integrity". The realist in me says "nobody's going to be happy to lose 15-20% of their post count, and the integrity thing doesn't mean much anyway". I'm probably not going to do it, but it's still up in the air.
Oh, and today I learned that since activedirectory uses ldap-based dns as its sole name resolution method (where nt domains used wins+dns), it's necessary to make either your activedirectory server, or a domain member server, or a friendly server in your domain forest into the dns server for any hosts you intend to join to the domain. And that I'm slowly going insane, from cramming too much incredibly geeky information into my head.

Oh man, this has always been a huge problem for me. I'm a pretty forgiving guy, especially to my friends. "Water under the bridge" I'll always say, and I hardly ever get pissed if they do something which negatively affects me and I realize it was an accident or something. But I can never really "forget" the incident, if it was big enough. It's possible to carry a grudge because of the memory of what a person has done to me, even though I've forgiven them completely.

It is said that to forgive is devine, to forget is just plain fucking dumb. Mistakes happen in life, that is a fact written in stone with blood, but we should learn from them. Yours and others. Its not about carrying grudges, but you expect that it won't happen again, or atleast an effort be made not too. I too am pretty forgiving, but i remember everything. Not just the bad but also the good. The fact the you remember, means that person holds some value in your eyes. Also friendships should grow, for that to happen the people involved have to grow too... nothing stays the same forever.
Kraco
Sat, 03-25-2006, 04:45 PM
To carry a grudge is a basic instinct. Animals do it also: Hit a dog, and it will remember for the rest of its life that you did it, and will never trust you as much again. The roots between that and carrying a grudge are the same. It's important to easily recall if a person has betrayed you before, to be able to avoid danger in the future.
Forgiving is just common, practical sense. And as such it can be established and disestablished at whim, whenever it serves a purpose. It has nothing to do with remembering or carrying a grudge as such.

Yeah. A real genius who first chased away or killed some of the most gifted people in the country, and then started a war against pretty much the rest of the (industrialized) world, leading his country inevitably to ruins. Quite a genius indeed.

He was a brilliant speaker. I'm wondering Xollence, what class/grade was this in? I recall my sociology teacher in one of my college classes had a discussion about the brilliance of Hitler's speeches. Not a single person was offended by this. Now, if the kid said that Hitler had brilliant ideas, or just said he was a genius in general, without mentioning that he meant is speaking skills, then I could see people getting upset.
Today, el_boss taught me that if you lose a ball, you can have a super-testicle. :p
Edit: @ Kraco- Manipulation of the masses to get what he wanted. He was a gifted speaker for his time. Not that what he did was right, but he was able to use what was available to get his way. Wow, I can't believe he got in trouble for that. Well what do you expect from a catholic university that hires a teacher that grew up in St. Petersburg for most of his life to teach about world connections. I'm sure there's no suspension involved or anything but I don't think the professor likes him too much.

*sigh*
Hitler was a genius at some things. But, like most geniuses, he was also very lacking in other (and important) departments.
Offensive military leader: Genius (one of the best ever)
Defensive/Retreat military leader: Idiot (Washington was the man at this)
Raising Morale/Support through speeches: Genius (i don't understand German and hearing some of his speeches give me goosebumps)
Cunning/Diplomatic Speaker: Idiot (see the text of his conversations with Stalin... Way to get yourself an enemy....)
Indepedent Decision Maker: Genius (Riestag incident, among others)
Cooperative Decision Maker: Idiot (see his reaction to recommendations from German generals on submitting to Allies)
but if you say really broad shit like 'Hitler was a genius' or 'Al Qaeda did a great job on 9/11', of course people are going to look at you like you should burn in hell. You need to be aware of the environment you're in when you touch on delicate subjects, and also take special care not to possibly imply something you don't agree too.

Well what do you expect from a catholic university that hires a teacher that grew up in St. Petersburg for most of his life to teach about world connections. I'm sure there's no suspension involved or anything but I don't think the professor likes him too much.
Just so no one generalizes about "uptight religious schools", I went to a Catholic Highschool. Both Sophomore and Freshman year someone did a speech/report on the subject of Hitler's military genious - despite his other questionable qualities. Both were pretty well accepted, with the Freshman teacher commending the student on picking such a seemingly controversial topic.
Today I learned there are loads of people who complain about "uptight" religious folk. But then again they do exist, so I'll refrain from getting too defensive. Fundamentalists, Mormons, and some of the people on my campus...just...yikes.

tic-tac-toe is a solved problem. There's no way to prevent two attentive players will always end in a draw.
Games that rely on the weakness of your opponent are not fun for very long -- Especially when your opponent is yourself.
I've destroyed many a piece of cheap panelboard furniture in my younger days... much of it the victim of an X-acto knife that tended to find its way into my hands when I was bored. Sometimes you just gotta slice another layer of particleboard off, just to see if the blade's still as sharp as it was ten minutes ago, right? :p

Well it's that last couple of days but here is my summery i had to write for my first 2 days of my course
During the last couple days of this course I have learned a fair bit of skills. The first being the personality styles of that a person can possess. The second being some communication skills. Now of course, I didn’t just learn the names of the sections of the course I’m taken. I’ve also learned a fair amount about both, and using the rest of this page I will briefly summarize that information.
On day 1 we started with the subject of personality skills. I had been intrigued to know that there are 4 different types of personality that are based off 2 pairs of values. The pair of self-contained and open was the first. Basically this pair involves how a person reacts to an event or action. Do they get guarded or open when you ask them about their feelings on a matter? Do they want to cut straight to the task at hand or want to work at their own pace? These questions help you see which of the pairings they are. As a self-contained person would react in being guarded with their opinion and want to get to the task as fast as possible. The open person would do the opposite; they would be open in matters and work at their own pace. The other pair involves how a person will act, in either a direct way or an in-direct way. The direct person would be faster paced and assertive, while an in-direct person would be less so and more methodical. These pairs then make the four styles. Relaters who are feelings people that have fear sudden changes, come from the open and non-direct pairing. Stimulators at those with the open and direct values, which are ideas people who fear a loss of prestige. I’m part of the third group as I’m a self-contained-non-direct person or an analyzer, I’m more into the process and fear that darn criticism. The last style is a driver who comes from the self-contained-direct pairing, this person are the goals people who fear being taken advantage of.
On day 2 we had the class devoted to communication skills. The process in which information is outputted and inputted, with the focus being a conversion between two people. This process has two parts a sender and a receiver both of who have a part to play in it. The sender is the person speaking hopefully about the idea and encodes it to the receiver by using words and actions. The receiver then decodes it by reading it or listening, and hopefully sees the intent of the sender. This process has a lot of things that go in to it and these different things can add positive or negative effects to it. For example tone of voice, which affects the process in the way of how words are said. Picking the wrong tone or adding stress to words that aren’t needed to be cause the receiver to maybe get the wrong message during the process. Other things can cause the same thing like eye contact, showing respect and manners. Also the listener can cause this process to go amiss by having filters to the message. These can disrupt the message with non-verbal things like their cultural backgrounds, sets of values and biases. Your brain can even be a vice as you can think faster then you read and hear causing it to get bored. To help yourself as the listener it’s best if you try to be quiet, listen with the answer running, maintaining eye contact and not being judgmental.
That’s about it I’d say, I would go more in to what I’ve learned but this is a summery. Although I think I may have over done it, it’s fine for now. I’m looking forward to the next classes, even if they make me wake up at 5:30 in the morning

The sender/receiver bit interested me the most. It reminded me of this English hypnotist named Darren Brown. He's so pro it's amazing. I saw a tv show done by him a while ago in which he displayed the subconcious aspects of communication. He basically gathered all these well-to-do businessmen/women and by giving them subconcious cues through his actions and words, got 3 out of 4 of them to rob an armored car by the end of the show. I say "hypnotist" but the guy just really understands human behavior and communication.

Anyways right now I'm taking a Professional Skills course that i have to do before i get to my real courses. It's basicly made to get you back in to the college and professional settings easier. I argee with you it is interesting stuff, and it really helps when your interacting with others with seeing though the mist per say to really to what a person means. It works on alot of levels, and can to the point that you can know someone you've never met before just by their speach and actions in reacting to questions and answers. With this knowledge you can easly convey your ideas to them for them to understand quickly with little understanding. As a leader you can use this knowlegde to see how to make them do something for you.

I'm pretty sure that in common English, both "mel-lay" and "may-lay" are considered acceptable.
In French (where the word comes from), that would never stand, and "may-lay" would be correct. But hell, 90% of the English language is bastardized versions of other languages ... we can twist french like any other language just fine. Besides, who wants to be like the French, right? =D

The way I see it, no matter what we say, if we're speaking ANY modern language we're horribly mutilating some other language for a substantial part of our vocabulary.
I have to admit, I think you're right about the whole circumflex thing ... but there's something to realize: in English, we don't HAVE that. At all. No circumflex. No accent grave. No accent aigu. No trema. Certainly no cedilla, and letters with tildes on top may just get you shot in some parts of the country (not really) :p.
Did we steal the French word? Yep, surely did, and brutalized it too. Did they steal it from latin and brutalize it in the process? Absolutely! Do I have to worry about it? Absolutely not!
As I said, I'm pretty sure there's two acceptable pronunciations in English. I should say in American English ... I don't know about the English they speak in Canada or Great Britain or anywhere else in the world. But in my part of the country, and in the company of gamers, if you say anything other than "may-lay" ... they'll either be confused or think your odd accent is hilarious :D
KitKat
Wed, 03-29-2006, 11:23 PM
Just to give you the linguistic view....
The minute a word enters common usage in a language, it becomes part of that language's vocabulary. No matter where they got it from, whether created, stolen, or modified from somewhere else, it is officially part of the language as soon as native speakers start using it regularly. Differences in pronunciation merely reflect dialect differences. One is not more correct than another. There can be one that is used by speakers who speak the accepted 'standard' variety of a language, but that doesn't mean that the other is less correct for being non-standard. Of course, people often don't recognize this because of social stigmas attached to speaking non-standard dialects.
So, the bottom line is, pronounce it whichever way you want. As long as there are a significant number of people in addition to yourself that pronounce it that way, you will be pronouncing it correctly according to your dialect.

I have to say I absolutely love your expression in that scene, KitKat! You kill a bandit and a vicious goblin without a single blinking of an eye, with a totally uncaring and blank expression. To be honest, most bandits and all goblins would have never dared to even confront you, after seeing that expression. They must have been a couple of very brave, or stupid, specimen that chose to be sent to their maker by your mace.
Edit: Oh... I must correct myself. It's not a blank expression at all. It's the same that your avatar has, only with the eyes open! It's just horrible. It's as if you almost but not quite smiled to the enemy, just before killing him, with no hesitation or remorse.

I saw them in 2002 as well. It was funny, the stage set up had these 2 large balloon clusters, meant to look like molecules, floating over some fans on the stage, and one kept hitting Maynard in the head. Anyway, it was fuckin awesome, though I wish I didn't have shitty seats.

They played here in 2001 after the release of lateralus. It was truly a mind blowing experience, words can't describe it. They didn't have the ballons, but they had two huge screens set up where they showed various weird clips. I don't know if it was controlled by someone, but the music actually synced with the videos. They are probably the most amazing live band ever.
The new single "Vicarious" will be aired april 17 on radio and from what I've read they are working on the video. The album will be released may 2 in america and may 1 in some places depending on where in the world you live.

Did you know that the earth is filled with background radiation too? Bananas are slighly more radioactive than other types of fruit, incidentally, because potassium is a radioactive element. And to go along with your astronomy-related theme, I learned last week from Wikipedia that most of space is filled with a sparse plasma, and all stars are made of plasma, which makes plasma the most common form of matter in the universe, more than solid, liquid and gas combined!
Carnage
Wed, 04-05-2006, 06:07 AM
Wow, I didnt know about how common plasma was. And to add to the astronomical topic, if you combine two black holes then you get a worm hole! and did you know our galaxy is 3,000 light years thick at the point of where our solar system is, but at the nuclear center of the Milky way it is 10,000 light years thick!

Today I learned some more biological mating stuff, as I so often do. A man will produce three times as much sperm when he is away from his woman. I'm not talking about a couple of hours, more like over two days or something like that. This is connected to another fact I brought up earlier. The added amount of sperm is there so it will have a better chance of batteling out the sperm of another man in the case that the woman has been unfaithful.

I learned so much from my contemporary world professor today about his life behind Soviet Russia. It was so much more interesting than when I heard Gorbachev speak at my school.
He told us that rock music was banned so they would hold rock concerts in apartments or underground. The police always knew about these concerts so they would always arrest everyone there, but my professor would go anyway and always expect not to come back home for 24 hours. He told us that he got picked up so often that he was never able to hear the band actually play.
Russian women did most of the manual work like construction and stuff because men were unreliable since they drank themselves to death.
You could get a arrested for wearing American jeans or wearing ripped jeans.
If you grew your hair too long the police would cut it.
You would have to wait in line for 2-3 hours just to get into the grocery store. My professor told me that people would just wait in line sometimes without even knowing what they were in line for because if people were waiting in line it had to be something good.
He grew up in a communal apartment, where each family took a room. One woman got into a fight with another woman in the next room in 1938 and when he moved into that apartment in 1976 they were still fighting. They ended up living right next to each other in Boston in 2002, and never spoke one word to each other since 1938 even though they've been living next to each other their whole lives.
A lot of the older Russian generation are annoyed with what Americans call "friend" since in Russia you're friends for life no matter what.
My professor is friends with Professor Khrushchev who teaches at Brown University. His father was Nikita Khrushchev, and he once told him that he was only 40 minutes away from ordering the nuke strike against America during the Cuba Missile Crisis, which would have ended the world. Pretty scary.
All Russians had to join the army when they turned 18. My professor got into a fight and was stabbed so he was able to avoid military service that year. He got lucky because that year the Soviet went to war with Afganistan.
----
Right when I was writing this an Arab couple was fighting next to me. The guy was engaged to her and then he ended up cheating on her. She's slapping him and yelling at him in the library right now. Freaking scary I need to move now.

That's pretty honorable. I wish America did have a better sense of what a friend was. Too many "friendships" end with some BS reason, or start because of something equally superficial. Same goes for couples. Everyone's just in it for themselves.

If that happens, sue them for sexual harassment! That'll teach em.

1. I do not write like a fucking retard (most of the time) which people who are younger than me, even americans, often do. Which is why I might come off as older.
Heh ... even people who're quite a bit older than you write like retards :p.
Speaking of writing, today I learned that despite being a poorly written hack-job (bad structure, no flow at all -- still better than standard fare on the forums), my first philosophy paper this semester swung a B+ on the quality of reasoning and an interesting and creative premise.
I think my time on forums and irc and fansubbing has actually served to make my writing style quite a bit worse. I used to be able to take a crap premise and string it together into an interesting paper just on structure and narrative flow. Now I can't take an interesting premise and string it together into a decent paper.
Further support of the premise "The Internet Makes You Stupid".

lol. I dont think they will cancel it though. They got in the news for the past few years a lot of time for bad stuff about them. But, they did it once about 3 years ago. But who knows...

It is a long story, but to make it short.
There are four classes in my grade. Each three classes has about 25, 27 and 29 students and my class has 33 students (that is a lot). 24 of them are guys and 9 girls. And all of the guys are troublemakers. They hit the floors with their feets, and hit the walls to bother the other classes. They do anything to drive the teachers crazy. That made our physic, chemistry and math teacher to quit. Now, they are even driving our new physic/chemistry/math teacher crazy even though he is already mad. Even the high school new principal is unable to control them. So the only way to make us behave is to threaten to cancel the graduation.
But the thing, they dont care about the graduation. They only care about the prom and the school cant cancel the prom.

Wow, they wouldn't hesitate to cancel prom here in the states, especially over graduation. From what you've stated though, the guys in your class don't sound as if they are ready to graduate. They sound pretty immature... I hope they don't end up screwing you over. I'd be pissed, if the actions of other students caused the rest to lose certain priviledges and such.

Sounds a bit like the majority of my graduating class...
Complich8's comment about his writing style made me think. I feel the opposite has happened to me. Being exposed to a lot of interesting topics, spending time writing thought-out posts (for the most part, I hope :p), and being exposed to others' writing styles and opinions has made me a better writer in my opinion. I feel I'm able to more clearly express myself in writing and comprehend other arguments better than I could before. I think it's good practice for writing essays and research papers and teh like.
@Xan: Yeah, the introduction thread, or my profile where my age has been written out since I joined back in 2003...

That is what all the teachers told our class. They say that we will be considered morons when we enter CEGEP.

At the beginning, the class didnt really bother me. It was entertainning. But when my science teachers left and got an asshole to replace them. Me and the whole class went down.

There's a certain value to that, to a limited extent. I think it's a question of where you're coming from and what you're exposed to. I used to be a really, really good writer -- good at structuring thoughts, good at turning interesting phrases, good at generating narrative flow.
But then, I used to read a lot more in general, and a lot more stuff with very good writing styles, in consistent, large quantities. I've got a whole room lined with books that influenced my writing style in the past, but that collection of books hasn't really grown lately.
I think a couple years of translating Engrish to English for various fansub groups, and the replacement of books with the internet as my primary source of reading material is the culprit.
Well, that and blogging. All of this informal, short, unresearched and somewhat unstructured writing is definitely taking its toll on my style and form.
It's so easy to just slap down a raw messy thought and leave it -- particularly if the thought stands on its own as a decently interesting insight. It's a lot harder to take the same raw messy thought, turn it over, fight for and against it, and shape it into something complete, and that process is what I've gotten worse at. I can still puke out random flashes of insight that look good to the casual observer, or as an observation in passing, but as literary contributions go, they're not worth the kilobytes of disk they take up in the database.

Today I learned that apparently I have black, not dark brown, hair!
So we're sitting in a bar and I'm talking with these two girls (and a gay guy) about, well what else, men. Wer'e talking about real blondes, fake blondes etc etc. And eventually the guy says to me, 'You don't dye your hair black do you?'
And I'm like "No. And my hair is dark brown by the way."
And the three of them are like, "No, it's black."
Back and forth, back and forth we argue. Finally the guy is like "What color is your shirt?" My shirt was black. "Look in that mirror, isn't it the same color as your hair?"
And he was fucking right. Maybe it was the lighting in there, cuz I was sure my hair looks more brownish in the daylight, but my hair looked just as black as my shirt. Goddamn I learned something new about myself!

Today I learned that pictures of flowers in the springtime practically take themselves. They're easy to take, they almost always look great ... in short, there's no challenge at all to it.
It's sort of unfulfilling, to be honest. I took like 90 pictures today, and like 80 of them were somewhere between decent and good. With other subject matter, it's hard to hit a 30% ratio of good pictures to pictures taken ... with flowers, it's like automatic 70-80% or more. All you need is decent sunlight and the ability to use "macro" mode on your camera.
I need to find more challenging, but still interesting subject matter.

count yourself luck, it could have been alot worst. As for getting your rating up, put out quality post and following the rules help. But generally it mean you have to stop being lazy. For one you have to start posting in the right section. Learn to do a basic search before creating a thread. Read the damn rules, and follow them (that helps a whole lot). Just be yourself and well if people see what they like........
Welcome to the forums. I have read all your post so far. You seem ok, just alittle too damn lazy, change that and you will be ok.. Enjoy Gotwoot and be kind to those mods. cause they hold your fate in there hands, unless they are being pricks which seldom to never happens.
