THIS SHOW ROCKS!!! Much different from the normal action/battle oriented anime!

http://animesuki.com/group.php/209.html

A group called C1 is subbing it. I've never heard of them and will put in my two cents on the quality and all that when I get around to watching it. The following is their synposis ripped from their website.

http://www.c1anime.net/
------They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as "Mushi". Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a "Mushi-shi" who travels around to investigate and find out more about the "Mushi". In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the "Mushi".---------

EDIT: C1's quality is actually pretty good. I don't know much Japanese but they seem to do a good (and detailed) job of translating and subtitling. Other groups have started to sub this show as well, including ANBU and AnimeForever.

Just when I thought I have already seen the most far-fetched anime idea something like this pops up...

Opening track is all in English and has no real action or characters depicted. Song is called "The Sore Feet Song".
The ending track is just a soft piano piece without any words. The background animation is similair to the intro. I believe the name of this ending is 'Green'.

Episode 1 Impressions

The main character, Ginko, is a rather ugly, pale looking guy who has white hair and smokes. He is quite in touch with the invisible elements of the world. He is referred to as a Mushishi, one who specializes in the field of supernatural (or, as the anime portrays it, quite natural) phenomenon that humans are oblivious of.

There is also a strange child, Ioroi Shinra, who seems to posess the powers to bring to life the things he writes with his left hand. His right does not have any such power.

This show is quite interesting because it seems to harp on many themes that are not quite religious but have alot to do with the structure of reality. Humans are seen as being the final, most physical form of life and therefore have the least insight into what truly constitues life. Then there are animals, plants, more basic life forms, and even simpler are bacteria and microorganisms which are quite close to what life is. Finally, at the center of 'life' are the Mushi, that can be thought of as the essence of life itself. Philosophers will eat their hearts out.

This show is not an action show. It has elements of mystery but it is not a 'thriller' either. This show is meant to provoke thought. The animation is quite beautiful and I found C1's sub to be quite accurate and thorough, even writing names on scrolls in English. The quality was good also.

I'm definetley looking forward to the next episode. I'm especially curious to see if all the Mushi are 'good' or...

GET THIS FUCKING SHOW NOW!!!!

2nd Episode Analysis, don't worry, I won't spoil

Title: Light in the Eyelid.

Close your eyes. What can you see? Nothing? Really? Keep them shut... There. You can see something, almost... Now try closing your second set of eyelids...

A girl from a noble family has been stricken by a strange illness. No optometrist can figure out why she feels such pain in her eyes when exposed to light. It worsens until even the slightest light becomes unbearable. A young boy named Biki lives with his mother. They own a warehouse that shuts out all light completley. The young noble girl is sent to live with them by the nobles, perhaps because they fear that the girl's disease may be contagious...

IMO: Sweet episode. The concepts here are still very airy, but you can relate to the idea behind them. This episode was more exciting than the first, as the threat is quite frightening... This show is beautiful. The animation is great and the music fits it perfectly. I have got to get my hands on the ending theme... This show is about something totally different from the typical slash-em-up or mecha-romp animes that are so common nowadays. This show really makes you feel like you're watching something more important than just some TV show. Shows human emotions and interactions honestly.

GET THIS FUCKING SHOW NOW!!!!

This seems like an interesting series so far, and I need something low-key now that Tsubasa is over. Although after the second ep it looks like this could have some nice horror elements too...

Bumping this shit to get a question answered...

By drinking the Luminosity, do you think that Shinra became a Mushi like his grandmother?

Also, do you think that the Mushishi Ginko is infact some sort of Higher-up Mushi?

masamuneehs
Sat, 11-05-2005, 12:24 PM
I was wondering whether Shinra became a mushi... it really wasn't very clear was it? I couldn't tell whether Shinra's finishing the ceremony was in order to solve the dilemma with his grandmother's lingering spirit or to make him a Mushi as well (or both?) To me it seems like they both became Mushi.

As for Ginko... I don't think he's a Mushi... His explanation of how humans are the furthest lifeforms away from Mushi and his knowledge about human medicine and Mushi interaction with humans really lead me to believe he is human as well, but somehow very attuned to the Mushi.

Mae
Sat, 11-05-2005, 03:26 PM
I'm pretty sure he became a mushi too. At the end of the ep the Mushishi commented that there were no more stories about the boy with god's hand. To me this said he became a mushi and left humankind behind, and that is what drinking from the cup was supposed to do.

The mushishi guy definately has some kind of backstory, and I wouldn't be that surprised if he turns out not to be human.

I liked the mountain village setting and the snow. I guess ears would be after eyes, and they are still establishing the main chatacter and how he works with the mushi, so I wouldn't expect any major plot yet. And who else tried the covering your ears to hear a sound like lava?

Ah, i love this show...

It is just really relaxing to watch this show and enjoy the beautiful animation and not need to get all tense about fighting and who is stronger than who and all that typical anime stuff. After each episode I just feel nice and happy about life, it's like my weekly meditation ala anime.
Episode 3 was pretty cool, and I'm getting to like Ginko more and more. The little kids in this show are so polite and smart.

@Mae- I've heard the sound before (when you cover both your ears), but I thought it was the sound of the blood rushing through your veins.

I watch this anime, but I reserve it for when I need to take a break from work, since it really seems to calm me and give me a good feeling.

I just watched episode 6 and thought it was one of my favorite concepts yet. Anyone who has ever hallucinated on magical mushrooms might be able to relate to the feeling the girl was describing, unable to focus, content, marveling at the smallest things... They say that close proximity to death is when a person can best experience life. (magic mushrooms are basically trying to kill you via poision, but you don't take enough to die)

It is a real shame that it seems like only you (Kaos), Bud, Mae, myself and a few people that don't post often are the only ones that watch this show...

I really love it. Probably one of the most undervalued animes out there... I think I'm going to take some steps to advertising this show (maybe add a link to this topic in my signature)

Yeah. No one watches it except us. Making ads is a great move. I just love this show. I watch it just before sleep, thats the time of the day Im most relaxed and can calm down to think things a little.

About the mushrooms, never tried them, but Ive heard they can make miracles. Many, many kinds of them that make you feel weird. Im going to Amsterdam next year so I think ill go and have a try at them. New experiences are always refreshing.

I believe these are the two songs from the intro and Ending, haven't DLed them yet. I'm really hoping the one called 'Mushi Utage' is the end track (which I thought was called 'Green', as its one of the few english words to appear in the end credits), that one is really relaxing.

Holy fricking christmas tree that Mushi in episode 11 was out of control! The twist in this episode wasn't incredible, but as usual the story was excellent and some of the artwork beautiful. I also liked the apprentice kid, seems like he'll do well in the future.

So that's why Ginko is constantly smoking... Might have explained it earlier but I forgot about that.

I like ep 12 a lot where it explains Ginko's missing eye and his name. It's one of the most touching by far.And his sensei's got a cool voice.
Here's a bit of trivia on the series.
For every 12 secs of the Mushishi anime you watch, 15,000 frames are drawn.
Every min it's 15,000 x 5 = 75,000 frames
One episode that is about 20 mins long, it's 75,000 x 20= 165,000 frames !

That's either a lot of manpower or a lot of talent.

Mushishi episode 12 was incredibly awesome. I still can't get over how beautiful and striking this anime is. The animation is absolutely gorgeous and I am in love with the end theme.

The Ginko and Toroyami Mushis were some of the coolest. I am so making a sig with those two in them. This was one of the best episodes. It explained alot of questions about Ginko.

Edit: Nui's VA also does the narration! She was also Queen Serenity in Sailor Moon and Megumi Takani in Kenshin. She seems to have done alot of minor roles in zillions of anime (and was in the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts).
Ginko's VA is almost the opposite. Mushishi is only the second thing he's ever been in, and the only one where he has a large role.

Since Ginko and the Mushishi in episode 11 had to introduce themselves to one another, and because 12 is set in a different place than 11, no.

Three things:

ANBU has released three episodes! I like that more and more groups are doing this anime. But I'm sticking to C1 because their releases have been fine for me and they were the first to pick up this anime.
ANBU - Mushishi episode 8 (http://a.scarywater.net/anbu/%5BANBU%5D_Mushi-shi_08_%5BAF0C7FE9%5D.avi.torrent)
ANBU - Mushishi episode 9 (http://a.scarywater.net/anbu/%5BANBU%5D_Mushi-shi_09_%5BABA68A98%5D.avi.torrent)
ANBU - Mushishi episode 10 (http://a.scarywater.net/anbu/%5BANBU%5D_Mushi-shi_10_%5B457CC5C3%5D.avi.torrent)

The second reason is that I redid the sig (now the blend isn't static, but its pretty ugly...)

And 3... because I love bumping this anime to the top of the General Anime section!

hey there new guys! You all must have excellent tastes in anime to be watching this show

I just saw episode 16, and its probably one of my favorites now. The Mushi in it was really interesting and every single one of the characters was fantastic. Definitely the best 'mother-son' combo we've seen yet in this show (there do seem to be alot of them, huh?).

Although it was sort of sad at the end... still it had a hopeful glimmer to it, that and the 'go out and learn something new everyday' motto.

I've wondered this ever since I started watching Mushishi, and the issue is brought up again in ep 20. Is Ginko immortal? Immortality is definitely possible as shown in one of the earlier episodes where a guy eats the tooth growing on the roof of his mouth and becomes immortal. At the end of ep 20, Tanyu keeps saying how Ginko will still be alive even by the time she becomes an old woman. It seems like everything indicates that Ginko had some incident with a mushi and became immortal.

double posting, yes I know, but I can also justify this action by linking to episodes not yet seen in this thread.

However, a more important issue has come to my attention. Various sources I've found claim that not only is this show 26 episodes long but that 3 of the un-subbed 6 remaining have already aired in Japan. This info is on AniDB as well as Mahou and some other places.

So look forward to some new Mushishi, i know I am!

I've only caught up to Ep20 so far. But it's really nice to finally see Ginko show some fondness for a girl. Go travelling together, eh? Sounds kinda romantic. =) Can't really imagine the kinda life that Ginko has to lead, what with him not being able to stay in one place for too long without causing it to be overrun by Mushis. I guess that's a pretty depressing life huh. Not being able to settle down.

This series is amazing so far. I believe I'm on episode 5 or 6. It took a few minutes for me to comprehend the concepts of Mushishi. Fri, 10-20-2006, 07:43 PM
This anime has a very melancholy and bittersweet tone to it. Some of the episodes are real tearjerkers. It's very realistic and easy to comprehend. (The first episode for me was like, "WHOA WHAT?! -- I believe I ignorantly said that it is more down trodden than Fruits Basket and more confusing than Lain..) It's been so long since I got my hands on a good "non-ninjaish" podering, thinking anime). There are heavy themes of death, but also life, in this anime. I hope they do another season or 5.

The characters have very realistic temperments. You don't really see any characters who are overly flamboyant or have that "I'm going to save the world! Believe it!" kind of attitude. They are just normal people who live normal lives just like us. Ginko reminded me of Kakashi because of his laid back dispositoin. (And more obvious physical characteristics.)

I can't say that I have a favorite or least favorite episode. I think they're all amazing. If someone were to draw a picture of a main character from episode, let's say, 7, I probably wouldn't be able to identify him. I can recall their stories well, but I couldn't name all of them by their faces or clothing like I could a few other anime. The characters in this anime are slightly similar in looks, but when you look at their history, themeselves, they are quite unique. I guess kind of what an outsider would say when coming to a foreign country,

This is the type of anime where nothing and no one is truly evil. We are all just creatures who live our own way, and survive in which way we can. I think I hated the Mushi for the first 15 episodes or so until I realized this myself.

The animation and soundtrack are beautiful. Every time I hear the ending theme I could swear it's a little bit different. Hell, maybe it is. If you haven't seen this anime, go get it while Anbu is still distributing it! I'm rather surprised that they decided to finish this anime, but I can definately see why. This anime is amazing. A must see for any avid anime watcher.

Anyone have any info on this anime, other than a potential live action? I demand another season! XD According to this site (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=9625) and Wikipedia, Funimation sent Cease and Desist letters to various subbing services such as animesuki, but they haven't even officially annonced that it's been licensed yet. A picture from the movie I randomly found? I don't know if it's already in this thread. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ginko-Movie.jpg) The guy from Shinobi. More screenies. Not to beat a dead horse, but I just wanted to share that as I watched it I came to the conclusion each episode is more depressing than the last yet I still had to watch the next episode. And whats funny is that that is the general consensus amongst my friends, every one of them, whom I've introduced Mushishi to. Also, I can't wait for the live action film to come out.

On ep 25 so far and gonna complete the series tonight. I gotta say that this is one of the most beautiful anime i've seen so far. The soundtrack was just plain amazing (i love that type of music) and its frequented on my music list. As for the character designs, I thought they could have been a little more creative on that aspect. Most of the people look like each other or at least have the same body.

The concept for this anime is what is truly astounding. It is comparable to nothing i've watched except maybe the universe of Princess Mononoke. The drawings of the mushi as well as their purpose are incredibly unique.

Every episode pulls you into its beautiful universe where you are surrounded by things that are just plain essences. They are not as real as you and I, yet they affect the world much the same. They are not to be worshiped and they are not to be terrified of (just be a little wary). They simply exist and its awesome that Ginko, unlike most of the Mushi-shi strives to keep it that way rather than just preemptively killing them.

It is definitely worked its way up on my favorite anime list for its originality, beauty, and harmony. I just hope the ending is awesome.

**edit. Just saw the final episode. I honestly thought (before i watched the ep) that he was going to die (from a human) and that he would say something philosophical at the end which would be amazingly profound.
However, that wasn't what happened...although i liked it nevertheless. It was definitely a good way to close the series. Having something in the series come around full circle and show us a little bit of what happened to him as a child after he left that lady. It's kinda funny that the whole show was about Ginko, but the ending included him for all of 1 minute.

I liked the message at the end of the show "the world is full of life unknown to man." Its absolutely true and its profound. It makes you realize that man truly doesn't know everything there is to know in the world. In fact we probably aren't even close to knowing half of everything there is. It give you the same feeling as when you look up at the stars and you realize how small and insignificant you are compared to the universe (i like that feeling...it makes me want to learn). I think this was a damn good anime and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is sick of the same old anime style.

I just finished this anime yesterday, and similarly to most people here, I've found that the best word that describes this anime is beautiful. I loved all the different types of Mushi, and how each was so very distinct. As I watched this show however, I found that this isn't really about Mushi; it's about people. More than any anime I've seen so far, this one showed an accurate portrayal of people as the really are, how they really live, and how they really react when disaster strikes.

In nearly every episode, the Mushi merely provide the situation. The stories are about the people who have to live with the Mushi. It shows people stretched to their limits, confronted with something they never wanted, never expected, and sometimes suffering quite a bit. But every person has a choice. They can choose to wallow in despair, to be caught up by fear or guilt, or they can choose to move on and live their lives as best they can. Sometimes they are 'cured', sometimes not. There isn't any correlation to a person being 'cured' to a 'happy ending'. Rather, the ones that make a conscious choice to make the best of their situation find ways to cope, and the episodes with sad endings only serve to underscore the beautiful courage and perseverance of those that choose to adopt a positive attitude and make their lives as best as they can be. I think that is what I love best about this anime. It has a message of "Sh*t happens, but only you determine what your life will be like." So opposite to stratos, I found this wasn't a depressing anime at all, but rather one filled with hope.

I admit I was pretty surprised by the last episode. I was expecting Ginko to wander back to the area where he was found, and discover the house he lived in before he lost his memory. As I think about it though, it seems very fitting. They still managed to conclude things by bringing them full circle (as most good storytellers do) but without bringing much attention to Ginko at all. It was like the writers hitting me over the head with a 2x4 saying, "Don't you get it yet? This story isn't about Ginko. He's just an ordinary person, without special powers, no more important than any one else. This story is about YOU, the ordinary person, and all the ordinary people around you."

Christ. This was a weird, strange, depressing, unique, beautiful series. Just had a two day cram session. Enjoyed every minute.:D

Whats up with that ending? There has to be more right.....?:(

Damn you english majors! >.> Puts my description of this extremly awesome series to shame. It has a unique level equivalent of One Piece. The ending kinda felt more to me like I what I imagine dropping the soap feels like though, not a 2x4. Definatly got the point across. Beautiful series all the same. If you havn't seen it, watch as soon as possible.:D

it's not a typical anime at all. i can't imagine people who only enjoy the action or comedy of a show would like this one. however, this is going to be one of those shows I ensure I keep, I can see myself enjoying this one even when i'm much older.

The Mushishi live action movie. I think it's a subbed version as well, but am DLing now to check. I loved the series, but I wonder if a live-action can create the same feeling that the beautiful animation did?

edit - it's a chinese fansub... :(

Anyway, I read a rumor somewhere about another season. Is there any credibility to er? Or shall it remain a rumor?

Great starter episode. My hopes for this second, and afaik final, season is that we learn more details about the Mushishi themselves, aka Ginko.

And?

Some wicked personality guy could tell you it goes well with the values of the show... like going with the slow flow of life and tolerate the way life springs here and there, how you musn't scare/anger the mushi and so on :D

I've just finished watching everything from S1 up till S2 Episode 03, and the new ones don't have the same punch as the old ones. They're more shallow in the themes they're exploring.

Disagreed. Im enjoying season 2 much more than the first one. There´s less filler, the pacing isnt as slow, where S1 was almost Tolkien-esque in its narration, which at times could be too much. S2 makes sure that every moment of an episode is interesting to watch. Moreover, I feel like we´re seen much more about Ginko and his life and motivation, which is an insta-plus in my book.

That scene in the latest episode where he showed genuine fear on his face, when that mushi-infected hunter appeared before him in the dark woods was great. Ginko always gives off this disconnect from all worldly matters and other people, seeing him act this personally affected was a nice change-

I guess I liked the approach S1 had then, but I'll wait till this season finishes before I make a final judgement. I liked the slow pacing as well as seeing Ginko accept requests from people. Ginko really does give off a feeling of disconnect in a sense, and I found that doing otherwise (aside from some romance/friendly-interactions) feels a little contradictory. His comment here to the guy about feeling all "king of the mountain" did come off as slightly confronting.

well, didnt expect mushishi to dedicate an entire episode to a "dumb girls hitting puberty"-topic. lol

I didn't expect them to follow it up with outright murder either. I got the vibes that something was wrong when he asked for the girl's health right from the start, but I didn't expect him to actually need her life.

Yeah, boring episode.

I´d really like to have at least one episode once, where Ginko is forced to actively fight a more vicious, truly dangerous mushi. I´m not expecting this regularly, but we´re always told that mushi come in all kinds of forms, so while a lot of them are small or thin or hardly visible, there should be the opposite as well. Just want to see if a Mushishi is more than just a wandering library.

HS - Episode 10 (http://www.nyaa.se/?page=download&tid=566527)

---------------------------------

Well that's it for now. I didn't really like this series as much as I liked the first one. As I said before, I enjoy seeing Ginko being summoned to solve a problem rather than simply running into them on his travels. The former has more impact since summoning implies that the problem is significant, while the latter can make Ginko come off as nosy (even though he's actually pretty good at keeping boundaries).

As for episode 9, I'm not so sure about how to interpret the ending. Was the father able to moderate his workload so that he only tended the one field to keep his family fed while keeping his lifespan long? If so, the Mushi that affected him really wasn't that big a deal then.

MFauli

I actually preferred this season. It was more personal towards Ginko. Instead of him being summoned to solve problems, he ran into problems himself several times. I would have loved even more danger for himself. The episode with the hunter-guy where Ginko made a facial expression as if he´s about to be murdered by some gruesome monster was fantastic.

Similarily, my favorite episode of season was the one where he gave the blind girl one of his eyes.

Oh, that was probably my favourite episode this season as well.

As for the first season, it would probably be that winter episode where this kid slept through an entire year (and Ginko joined him partway) because a cocoon didn't hatch. Or it might be that episode about the girl who writes stories into scrolls as a way to remove the mushi that makes her crippled.

What both episodes have in common is that they gloss over potential romantic relationships for Ginko.

Tanyuu!!!!

I have been rooting for TanyuuXGinko but it never happened...

I still love the pair, and in my head, Ginko eventually went back to her and fulfilled his promise.

------------------------

oh wow, i almost started crying at the end. dunno why. just not knowing what happens to the nice old guy makes me so sad. :( His wife dies, then he sacrifices himself to bring back Akane-chan. And now what? He´s unlikely to step on anybody´s shadow, too, so he´ll live forever, forever alone, as somebody who´s wife already died. This is just too sad.

David75
Sun, 11-02-2014, 02:38 AM
I guess, as a man who lived a wholesome life, he will try to forever keep the same Akane/Mikage/Previous-Shadow tragedy cycle to ever hapen again.
The only thing is, even at his old age, with his accumulated wisdom, how many years/decades can he really resist the loneliness and darkness? Akane had to wait 70 years or so... pretty good for a 10 year old I'd say, and she was willing to resist some more years.
But there's probably a limit to that. At some point, the old man will probably want to end his life. Thing is, it's only possible if he starts the cycle again.
