Today, one of my friends was teasing me and said, "I bet you were out drinking all weekend."
Me: "Haha, actually I was playing DDR for most of the weekend."
Friend: "Wow, I'd rather admit to being an alcoholic."
My first introduction to DDR was last Christmas when my brother brought his game and dance mats home at Christmas. I was instantly hooked. What other game combines video games, music, coordination, and cheesy graphics in such a fun, social, and active way? We even managed to get a lot of the older relatives to try it out. Even my grandma tried a song. So, even though I was separated from DDR for such a long time, it never ceased to be one of my favourite games.
Fast forward to last week. Some of my friends all pitched in and got me DDR for my birthday! Yay!! So, as you can imagine, I've been playing like nonstop. DDR is on par with Guild Wars in terms of my addiction to it. We've already unlocked like 20 songs, and my housemates keep dragging me away from my homework to play. .....ok, so maybe they don't drag me.....but they tell me to come play and how can I not!
So, come talk about this fabulous game!

It took you this long to get hooked onto DDR? Haha, well, at least you finally started i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif I've been in love with DDR ever since it first came out here in North America. Regardless of that, I'm still an alright player (can do 7 - 8 feet in Heavy mode).

I also laugh incredibly at this game, just because people look so damn silly when they do it!
See that South Park episode with the You Got Served contest and the Asian DDR kid? My point, exactly.

I feel the same way most of the time. Especially when they're not that good.
But I have about 2 friends who RULE at it, just naturally, and they're not super-nerds or anything. So it's fun to watch them for about 1 or 2 songs. Then the game is boring again.

Ugh, I think my midterm this week killed my foot-eye coordination. On the weekend I was up to 6 feet on standard, and tonight when I played I couldn't even clear songs that I was getting through consistently before. I think I've reached the end of the easy part of the learning curve, and it may take me a bit more time to improve from here.
Also, I understand all the comments about how people playing it look silly. That's why I play in my house, never at arcades. And it just makes it more fun to be able to laugh at your housemates trying to dance. One of them thinks it will help him improve his actual dancing skills, but I'm pretty skeptical about that.

Oh yeah, this game rocks alright. I got up to doing just about any song on six feet and some on 7. This was all the way back in the fifth edition of the game though, I really haven't played since. All this worrying about looking silly playing the game, well, if it bothers you then you won't be having fun. I'm not about to let that kind of crap get in my way of a good time though.

I've tried DDR on the PS with a dance mat a couple of years back (it was my sister's). I looked as if my feet was on fire rather than dancing. Haven't been to arcades too often but I saw some of the new dance machines which used sensors and required hand movements as well. Most of the young people were doing synchronised dancing behind the machines and the people who were dancing got almost full scores, everytime. It was insane.....

A friend of mine had an interesting idea:
We were going to have 2 of us go up to the ddr machine, put in some quarters, and choose the song Tsuguru, and then when the music starts playing, a dozen other people dressed up as ninjas would come out from behind counters, upstairs, outside, and from the bathroom and all dance synchronized behind the ddr machine.
That never happened though i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif

DDR is more fun at an arcade where they have the machine, i dont really like the pads becuase you gotta ducttape to the floor so they stop slipping...

not if you have a good one(like the one you have to put the tiles in)
but why workout your feet when you can workout your fingers.

just sign up and you can break your fingers playing this game ;) (you reminded me about it Chaos so yeah...)

is that a bad thing? also i remember watching my brother play that when DDR first came out, i was watching it like it was the most amazing thing i had ever seen since it had lots of cool flashing lights...:p
And acctually playing on the mat really isnt a problem anymore seeing as how i usually roll out an old carpet and ducttape the mat to it. When its done, roll it back up :D (for those of you who play at home you might want to try)
and speaking of workout, playing an endurance run of DDR (or even their diet mode or whatever its called) can acctually be a great workout. I went to a DDR tourney at my friends (just a few of us went there for fun) and after like five hours of dancing for a week straight we were all dead but everyone lost like 10-20lbs. We were shocked, but couldnt get the energy to do it again...

My aunt got this so that she can work out with her kids, to promote them not turning in to mindless kids sitting in front of the T.V all day. Now they are mindless kids getting fit watching the T.V all day. My sister (younger I only have one she is about 8, which is a very big time apart as I'm 21) she wanted it to so I got it for her birthday. I've played with her many times although it's really hard on any setting above easy :p

I don't go to arcades these days, but don't people play with the new dancing machines with light sensors these days? The one which require hand movements. It's called Para Para Paradise I think. I've seen people who get perfect scores, and usually attract a crowd to watch behind them.

i love butteryfly but to tell you the truth, i prefered the DDR on the PSX. i cant believe i forgot the name of this one song but if anyone remembers it was on one of the disks for the PSX it had non-stop levels and it was 4 songs strung together. I remember it was boom-boom-doller, the song i loved, butterfly, and something else but whenever i was bored i'd just break it out and start going non-stop. Unfortunately i dont have a PSX now and have forgotten the name of that song :(

I got my fiancee DDR Ultramix 3 for Valentine's day.
I'm at her house playing it right now and i'm currently failing every time on LIGHT difficulty...

@ciber: Ah, don't worry about failing in the Light difficulty, almost everybody goes through that tough beginning (I know I did). Keep practicing and you'll be doing Standard or even Heavy songs :)
As for the Butterfly song.... I FREAKING HATE IT. It's one of the most annoying songs I have ever heard, making me wonder why it's so damn popular (a reason would be appreciated). The only good thing about the song is the difficulty of the upbeat version. It's fun to play.... would be even better if it was another song.

DDR is great. For exercising, having fun and making a fool of yourself.....its simple amazing.
I am not the best at it but i know i am not the worst. The only problem i have is that i step to hard( for a skinny guy), broke a dance pad and heard an ear full from my friends. Definitely one of my favorite game, getting a little tired of some of the songs other are just too funny to pass up.

I'm currenlty at the point where I can do most standards getting A's and B's. I only have DDR Ultramix 2, but my friend has 3 and I keep trying to do that Sakura song on standard but keep failing at the same spot :( . It's anoying cuz i have a nice combo up until that spot, then I get like 12 boos in a row and it fails me...
@kooshi: I think the only reason the Butterfly song is popular is because it's so easy :p
