Uninstall all of your current video and audio codecs.
Install the CCCP (http://kaa.animeconnection.net/torrentpage/download/Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2005-07-26.exe).

I recommend using Media Player Classic to watch all your .ogm and .mkv files...
ssa is just the subtitle file, you don't need to play it... you just need to make sure that it's named the same as the .ogm... when you play the .ogm it will automatically look for the .ssa and display the subtitles (sometimes you need to activate the subs by right-clicking on the video screen and going to filters...)
For example:
YtheAlien.ogm
YtheAlien.ssa
You play YtheAlien.ogm on Media Player Classic, and the subtitles should pop-up...
Another thing you need to know about .ogm, is that the usually have multiple audio sources, usually English and Japanese... you can change the audio track by right-clicking the video screen and going to filters...

VLC is the least i would recommend...
It's a catch-all when people can't make things play...
It has problems playing back releases properly...

Subtitles aren't shown as they were meant to be for one...
Second, the scroll bar sucks...
Thirdly, It sucks i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

I happen to like the scroll bar on VLC as I can use the little wheel thing in the middle of my mouse and forward it using it. Subtitles are another story, for some reason VLC doesnt like to read them for me, so I use media player classic. I think classic overall does put out a better pic and I can run it while Im incodeing or running other programs just fine where as VLC doesnt like it when I run other memory intensive programs.

Hence, why this is an inappropiate player to play ogm and ssa...
