[DO]

Warning: If you come into the channel to @find or !list you will be banned on sight.

First thing you need to do before you can get on an IRC server is download an IRC client. This can be found here:
mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/)

Now after you've installed it, you need to configure. This may seem confusing at first, but actually its very easy.

Run the program and you'll be asked to fill in some details in the "mIRC options" dialog box. Given that this is the internet you dont have to use your real details if you wish.

After you have finshed that, you can now connect to an IRC server. Type this in your mIRC chat box near the bottom of the screen. /server irc.gotwoot.net

Now that your connected to the server; type /join #gotwoot into the status window (as shown above) and your into our little slice of paradise. Welcome! =)


When your on a network, the first thing you need to do is register your nickname. When you do this, it ensures that nobody can steal your nickame when your not online. This is the command for registering:

/msg NickServ REGISTER password email

*fill in a password and a valid email*

After you register your nickname. You need to tell the server that your online and your nickname is registered. To do this type:

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password

You're good to go!


Other helpful commands to know

/nick Nickname Use this command to change your nickname
/me text Displays action
!list Gives you a list of every file server in the channel
@find Searches file servers
/join Allows you to join another channel
/part Exits channel
/hop This command is used to quickly exit a channel and rejoin it
/whois Check your status window after this. It will produce some information about the nickname chosen such as IP address (though this is masked on the server to non IRC ops), and which channels the user is in.
/query nickname message It will make a window popup for the private message.
/msg nickname message When you use this command only the person you sent it to can read what you said.

What are the symbols next to people's names?
~ is the channel founder the highest rank in a channel
@ means channel operator (OP). These users can kick, ban, and set modes and settings.
% is half-operator (hOP). Half ops can kick and ban users and set some modes.
+ means a voice. Voiced users can still type even when the channel is moderated (which may be done to stop flooders).


Channel Modes
+s Secret Is a mode used to hide the channel from appearing when someone uses a whois command.
+p Private means the channel is in private and it wont appear in the channel list of the server.
+l Limit This limits the channels users to a number of a OP/hOP's choosing.
+k Keyword Also known as "key" you can't enter a channel unless you know the keyword.
+n When this is set no one outside the channel can notice or message a whole channel.
+r means the channel is already registered.
+t Only channel operators can set topics.
+m "moderated", only people with a voice and higher can talk.

Note that only Ops and hOps can set modes.

I tried it out and It seemed pretty cool but the themes suck greatly. I also didnt like the set up of the whole program.

Does IRC use a certain port? I recently configured my ports so I could do numerous activities with optimal performance, but I only get about 20 kb/s from K-F's fastest bot (IMO) where as I would be getting 200 kb/s. I also tried a few of the other bots and they were much slower.

When you want to connect to IRC, you use a port range of 6660 - 6670 but some servers might go up to port 7000.

As for you're problem with the K-F bot. It may be your connection or theres.

Our services now allow a user to set protection on for any nickname that they've registered:

/msg nickserv help set kill
Syntax: SET KILL {ON | QUICK | IMMED | OFF}

NickServ Turns the automatic protection option for your nick on or off. With protection on, if another user tries to take your nick, they will be given one minute to change to another nick, after which NickServ will forcibly change their nick. If you select QUICK, the user will be given only 20 seconds to change nicks instead of the usual 60.

We now allow user interaction with botserv two new options we've added to services are
Fantasy mode and Symbosis mode.

/msg botserv HELP SET FANTASY

Syntax: SET channel FANTASY {ON|OFF}

Enables or disables fantasy mode on a channel. When it is enabled, users will be able to use commands !op, !deop, !voice, !devoice,
!kick, !kb, !unban, !seen on a channel (find how to use them; try with or without nick for each, and with a reason for some?).

/msg botserv help set symbiosis

Syntax: SET channel SYMBIOSIS {ON|OFF}

Enables or disables symbiosis mode on a channel. When it is enabled, the bot will do everything normally done by ChanServ on channels, such as MODEs, KICKs, and even the entry message.

Users can now access SSL through port 6668

I tried out IRC about a year ago and didn't really understand it, so I stopped. Anyway, I'm trying again and I'm finding it easier than the last time, I have one problem though. I tried to get Konoha Sports Festival, but apparently my DCC settings were not tuned to what is needed for download. Could someone tell me what I need to do to it?

You'll need to make sure a couple things are in place. I'm going to assume you're behind a router, and know how to forward ports. If you're directly connected, just make sure you don't have firewall issues. Also assuming you're using mirc.

Open up tools->options.

Under "Connect" pick "Options", and click the "Advanced" button. Enter a port range over 1024. I'd recommend keeping the range fairly narrow. I use 2048-2054. Make sure that "DCC" is checked. Forward the port range you chose in your router (if applicable).

If you're connected to an irc server already, make sure that under "Connect" -> "Local Info" you see your external ip address listed and correct.

Pick "DCC" next. Under "On Send request", make sure to pick "Auto-get file".

Pick "DCC" -> "Folders" and adjust the download folders however you please.

Pick "DCC" -> "Ignore". Make sure you're not on method "Accept only", or if you are that your "File type" list includes the file extensions you want to get. I generally leave this disabled.

Pick "DCC" -> "Server". Make sure it's enabled. Default port if 59, and it's generally good to leave it there if possible, but you can change it if you have to. Forward that port, too, if applicable. Make sure to listen for at least "Send" to get files. "Chat" and "Fserve" are useful, too.

Once you've done all that and got your ports forwarded as necessary or firewall otherwise opened up, you should be good to go.

Your School is blocking that port one way around it is www.ircatwork.com.

the ircd listens on 6667 and 7000 for regular connections, 6668 and 6697 for ssl connections.

Try connecting on 6667. If that doesn't work, try connecting on 7000. If that doesn't work, check out http://www.mirc.co.uk/ssl.html and try to grab openssl and drop the required dll's into mirc's directory. When connecting on ssl, prefix the port number with a "+" ... so you'd say "/server irc.gotwoot.net +6697" instead of "/server irc.gotwoot.net 6667".

My mother (yes, my mother) would kill me if I used my cell for something like that. It's so expensive it's not even worth it. Besides, on what grounds would my school be able to expell or suspend me on? I don't intend to download at school. Just check in. Unless you guys could tell me how to get past the HardDisk lock.:rolleyes:

Well, I also go to a tightwad private Catholic school, so they can pretty well do anything they want with the students. And it would be on grounds of trying to undermine the schools security.

About the phone thing, I have a windows mobile smart phone with an unlimited data transfer plan, so I can do it as long as I want for one price. That of course includes any internet related things with my phone which include, but not limited to, Internet browsing, Any chat client, Radio streams, Google maps (which I love), and more.

My advice is to check into any policies your school would have that cover internet usage and make sure what you are doing will not be breaking any rules. If you don't see anything, then I would say go for it and see what they do (To be honest I did use ircatwork one day. They found out by the end of the class period, but because I know the tech guys, instead of reporting me to the office, they just told me not to do it again and blocked the site).

Try irc-8.gotwoot.net instead of irc.gotwoot.net

So yeah, my old irc server totally died in a power outage... never came back. I made a new one to replace it and hooked it back into services, but now it's just irc.gotwoot.net. Listens to 6661-6667 and 6669 non-ssl, and 6668 and 6697 ssl. It's officially at irc.gotwoot.net again... so update your autojoins or whatever ...

Jolly good work, Complich. In order to listen to the silence that is #gotwoot, one has to be able to join the channel, after all. Kind of like the old question of does a tree falling in a forest make any sound if there's nobody present to hear it.
