View Full Version : Im in Japan

So I was planning on making a nice topic which said "OMG Im going to Japan" but then the forums went down and the idea got fucked up. Sooo, Im Japan now. The land of J-pop, anime and the weidest porn ever made.

What the hell am I doing here? Im not completely sure but I think it has something to do with learning the language and losing weight - Im like 115 pounds but Id like be thinner and yes I do realize you dont care about that.

Anyway, Im staying here for three months.
Three fucking months away from my home, my family, my language and tortillas. I dont like to reinforce stereotypes but what the hell am I going to do without tortillas and salsa?? Well, youll all be able to judge how crazy am I going according to whatever posts I make - which aint going to be a lot cause I dont have internet access at my homestay, which sucks.

115 is ideal weight for a woman of medium build who stands at 5 feet 3 inches (160cm).

Watch out for tentacles, WD, I don't trust those japanamese.

i recommend osaka and kobi, those were my favourite places outside of tokyo.

in tokyo make sure you go to akihabara cos its just anime heaven! plus everything is quite cheap like posters and stuff like that. DVDs are expensive for anime

Whoa, a day and this thread grows some. I guess the word "Japan" was enough.

1. Im not taking pics of girls, so sorry. Im not lesbian enough.

2. Everything is fucking expensive here, but Im living through...

3. God fucking dammit, when they say "rainy season" they aint joking. Its been raining for two days straight now!! Im coming down with a cold and I hate it and since I cant wear shoes around the house I get even worse.

Other than that, everythings really fine... lotsa cute guys and even more weird guys to laugh (discretely) at and the japanese dont have the guts to stand up to anything you do, it seems. Ill watch Naruto tonight because my host family likes to have the TV on all day long even though they dont watch it...

What sucks the most is the metro. Its expensive as hell and you dont really get another option. I make 40 minutes (or more) everyday from my house to the school, earning funny looks from the japanese who pretend not to be looking at you but really suck at doing so.

I think Ill open a "journal" type of topic if the mods dont mind, cause I cant seem to be able to enter community from this place...

Ill miss mIRC, to talk with you guys and insult people... and I cant download shit in these computers. I have to go to Akihabara and Shibuya to buy stuff but Jesus my throat hurts.... ah well, see you guys in my next update.

BTW, Im not so thin. Im around 57/58 kilos, you figure how much thats in pounds, and my height is 168 cm or so...

2:25
Wed, 04-20-2005, 05:01 AM
That's actually pretty good for your height.
I want to be as tall as 168 cm too :<<<<<

So how are you getting along with the language?

joker-kun
Wed, 04-20-2005, 06:02 AM
That would mean you're about 127 pounds (1 kilo = 2.2 pounds), and you're about 5'5 (Centimeters to inches: cm x 0.39 then divide by 12).

Anyway, enjoy your time, stay safe.

I just came back from Japan last week with my wife as well. We visited Mount Fuji, Hakone, Yokohama, Tokyo and Shinjuku. Bought lotsa Gundam/Ultraman/Naruto stuff there. They have the most polite sales people there, and also the best anime related stores. All anime/manga lovers have got to visit Japan at least once.

Well, my biggest complain are my hips you see, I think they are too big and my brother then went and said something like "Hey, dont complain!! Youll have an easy time with childbirth!!" and thats not what a girl wants to hear and HEY WAIT A MINUTE THAT WASNT THE ORIGINAL TOPIC!

Anyway, yeah, I hope Ill get to visit lots of places. For the moment Ive visited Shibuya already and my schools in Ginza, and tomorrow a friends taking me to Akihabara.

Ive found two adult stores already!! I might get to buy porn if I want to.

Ill go ahead and open a blog topic when I get free time... I have to go back to class right now.

BTW, last Naruto episode was hilarious, but I think my Okaasan thought it was weird I laughed so much. I dont know you guys, but theres nothing more fun than (SPOILERS!!!!!) Sasuke running around screaming "Dont kill me!!".

BTW2, does someone here "collect" the raw Naruto manga& If so, could you pass them to me once I get back home& I cant download here and I want the "collection" complete, and Shounen Jump is fucking big and so I cant buy them all.

The lateral margins of your pelvis aren't determining factors in the ease of childbirth. Your weight is fine for your height and figure.

Weekend

I ended up not fainting but I lost my voice anyway. Whee. Spent the weekend with my family, going to museums and stuff...

Watched One Piece on the TV. Didnt understand much but I get the impression I havent been missing much... I didnt like the voice actors at all.

Akihabara was sweet!! I mean, really. Its full of videogames, anime and flat-screen TVs that cost around 1,300 dollars. I accidenatly walked into a sex shop - I swear it was accidental, it looked like a cosplay shop on the outside!! I guess it was a cosplay shop, all in all - plenty of school girl and anime outfits, all in the style of "Let us live our most perverted hentain fantasies". There wasnt much of interest though, too S&M for my tastes. The only other clients were a pair of highschool girls, looking at the whips.

There were a lot of hentai games shop out in the open, too, showing their games to whomever wanted to look at them... does anybody here knows whether I can buy a Nintendo DS here and still use it back in Mexico? As in, will the "american" games work with a japanese system? If they do Im buying it as soon as I get my birthday money, which will be in around a month.

On other topic, I can post pictures here. I have no way to. No scanner, no USB port, no nothing. So sorry, youll have to wait till I go back to Mexico and I can scan stuff...

This weeks Shounen Jump had Naruto on its cover, along with everyone else, making weird faces. I wonder if its because of Kodomo no Hi.... anyway, its a really big magazine for 2.40 dollars. Im buying it later.

Need to eat something before class now... hope it wont rain.

I was about to buy a PSP back in Japan, as it was much cheaper than where I lived. But just when I was about to get it I read a big signboard near the entrance: PSP + DS are to be used in JAPAN only. Any problems used in other country maybe cause problems and is not under the warranty. I immediately aborted the idea, as it was always better to buy electronic stuff back home where I can always go make a change. No need for any step down/up transformer too.

samsonlonghair
Mon, 04-25-2005, 07:21 PM
In the case of DS, it's not the game cartridge that will give you problems; it's the voltage. You can buy a DS in Japan and play a cartridge bought in North America, but do not ever, for any reason plug the DS into a DC power converter from Japan and plug that power converter into a North American outlet at the same time. It will fry your electronics. I had the same problem many years ago with the original GameBoy, and I'm ninety-nine percent sure that Nintendo has done nothing to counter this problem.

I still have that GameBoy by the way, and it still works (miraculously).

Winged Dancer
Mon, 04-25-2005, 10:43 PM
I think Japan and Mexico have the same voltages, though - I bought a multiple-transformer once and the one for Japan was the same for Mexico... and I dont care about the warranty, I (sadly) use my consoles so little (time!! goddamnit, time!!) that they survive on their own -.-

Well, even if I didnt buy the DS Id buy one of the Naruto games. Theyre not so expensive and I feel its like my duty to buy them, you know, as a fan. Which is what I am. Kind of.

Anyway, bought the Shounen Jump yesterday and could read it pretty well, which made me really really happY. There was a new series starting, called "Be A Hero!", a sports manga about Judo. It was pretty fun and the art was good... anyone knows any place that translates other Shounen Jump series besides Naruto, One Piece or Bleach (which was pretty good too)?

Im stuck as to what to do during the Golden Week, which is coming right up - thats why theres no manga next week. My host family is doing nothing but I didnt came all the way here to do nothing, so... I dunno. I guess Ill head to Kyoto and see the shrines and most probably end up begging the mikos to let me join them cause civilization sucks...

Other than that, I dont think there are many things I can afford to do. Except going to the Asian Kung Fu Generation concert in Shibuya! Tickets are around 30-50 dollars... I guess Ill think about it.

kAi
Mon, 04-25-2005, 10:49 PM

I could have sworn that all the countries in North American use 110 voltage. Remember, the voltage, wattage, amperage, and polarity all need to be the same. You have some leeway on the amperage. anywhere between 1.7 and 3.2 milliamps should pose no problems in my opinion. Polarity shouldn't be a big concern. I think you'll find negative polarity is the case for DC power adapters almost everywhere when using a small electronic device like the DS. Voltage and wattage are all you need to worry about. I'm still fairly certain that voltage, not wattage is the issue. Maybe the multiple transformer you bought was a high-quality piece with good capacity. That could explain why you had no problem.

Ugh, yeah. I misspoke. I meant to say 110, not 220. 220 is the voltage in Japan and most of Europe. Once again, I've said everything bass akwards.

Winged Dancer
Wed, 04-27-2005, 09:32 PM
Mmh, I'll make sure to check the voltage then. Its just that its so much cheaper here... in Mexico, after much searching, bargaining and making pretty faces at the vendors I managed to get it down to 170 dollars (and not buy it), here its only 14,000 yen... roughly 145 dollars or so.

I liked takoyaki, which is weird cause I hate octupus. Its so... squishy inside your mouth. But takoyaki was really nice though! Actually, ever since I got here Ive gotten around to eating things I wouldnt ever eat in my country, like uh... vegetables. I hate them. But here, well, I dont know how they do it but they taste nice. I think I'll have to ask my okaasan to teach me how to cook japanese/chinese style (she does both) and then buy one of those machines to make gohan and send it to Mexico via boat or something so it wont be very expensive.

And I have to agree with Death Boo Z - Toriyama's World has great translators and great editors and its be the best site ever for scanlations if they only worked more than once every three months. Last I visited, they were translating the Bleach anime at a rather slow pace...

Missed the Naruto anime yesterday 'cause I was too busy buying stuff at Harajuku and laughing like an idiot when the Kyou Kara Maou! opening started playing on the radio. All of Japan is expensive as hell (food specially) but clothes at Harajuku are really cheap and pretty cool... I found skirts at $10, and blouses at $9, all good quality. There were also loooong japanese socks (very manga) but those were about 20 each pair... if any of you ever visit Japan, just do your best not to eat. It'll save you a lot of money.

And dont get sick!! I caught a flu and had to pay around 100 dollars for the

Sleep. listen to music. and stare at the women.
Had to wait in Miami for 3 hours once. My friends and I just sat on a bench starring at people to make them uncomfortable and took turns sleeping.

Oh man.. A friend of mine is in japan right now too. It seems all the boys in her school that are not dating has a crush on her. Do japanese really like blond hair and long legs that much? Hope you have a wonderful time there WD, and hopefully a miracle will occur and all the prizes go down! ^_^ oh yeah, be a pal and tease all the bishies for me! *giggle*

She dazzles them with her spanish speaking skills. btw, on average how many over in japan actually speak english? I dont know wether you try to converse with them in english or not but I was just curious. weird that food is more expensive than clothes over there. Hope your time goes great! Tenga cuidado con el trafico. =P

Er, I dunno whats happened over the last I dunno how many days since I wrote, but anyways...

......man, Sasuke is a fucking drag queen. Did you see his lipstick on TV? Its shinier than my lipstick. Its shinier than Terra's lipstick.

Anyway, Golden Week came and went and I used it all exploring Tokyo. I can safely say now that I've visited almost all of the important places except Ueno and Ginza (which my school isn't at, as I had though) and will visit them later anyway. Shibuya is a nice place but I've spent more time at Harajuku, buying clothes and staring at cute men (yes, men. sorry to break anyone's bubble, but I'm still not lesbian) and at Shinjuku, at karaoke bars either with latino girls or a Swede and a German that are way too hot for me not to hang out with them.

Man, I gotta move to Europe one day.

Anyway, getting anime stuff here is harder than I would've thought. Even anime soundtracks are hard to find in commonplace stores, but then again I haven't visited one of those big-ass Virgin or Sony stores, nor have I returned to Akibahara (lo, hentai paradiese, lo!), where I could most probably find them with more ease.

Things are not as expensive as they make it sound. In fact I think Europe is way more expensive - at least France, England, Spain and possibly Germany, which are the only places I know anyway. But I dunno, when I was there it was sometimes hard to find ANY place to eat for less than 10 euros (which is a lot of mexican money), while here in Japan I can eat rather fine for about 500 yen, which is about half of the above quantity.
Electronic stuff isnt bad either, and most CDs are in a range of about 950 yen (about 10 dollars) to 4500 (45 dollars).

The cheapest most pretty thing Ive found is manga. ALL of the Shounen Jump publications are 390 yen, a wonderful 4 dollars. Most shoujo manga is the same, and in fact I have yet to see ANY manga above 600 yen... for the moment I got the last two Naruto volumes and the first of Gintama, a Jump series that I dont think is being translated which is a shame 'cause its rather good up till now. Think Alternate Universe Kenshin with some comedy as well and quite decent art and you've got Gintama.

I went to see Miyazaki's last movie, too. Its called "Howl's Moving Castle" and is suppossed to come out in the States sometime this year. As usual with Miyazaki, its really really good and different from most cartoons/animations you have seen, but if you have seen all/most of his movies, there are some things you can guess or expect... other than that, its the most anime-ish movie he's done and has quite more action than the others along with a more definite plot (think Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. No straight plot there, right? Howl's has that one.)

Anyway, I don't know what else to write at the moment so I'll leave it there...

yeah i really dont think the prices are so bad i had to do a project for a class where we planned out a month long trip and with about 4000$ U.S. you can go to japan, live there for a month and then leave, dont get me wrong the room i "booked" sucked ass and didnt have a bathroom but oh well and besides it came with a free bathrobe :0

ChaosK

did you acctually LIVE there? i mean, planning what you do and acctually doing it is WAY different. Trust me, staying in a cruddy room would've gotten me insane. But a friend hooked us up with a nice suite in a hotel. Even so, u cant go to japan and not try all their kinds of foods. B4 i went to japan i was a fan of fast-food (well i still am but not as much) they have so many other things to eat there, and they end up being expensive, but you just HAVE to try it. The sushi, is WAY different from it is here from my point of view. Then again it is more expensive AND in order to find entertainment in japan you end up spending quite a lot. the night life is incredible which is probably why WD hasnt gotten on, too busy.

bathrobe...? O_o

Thu, 05-19-2005, 03:32 AM
Bathrobe? Who mentioned anything about bathrobes? I certainly didn't. I use towels only. Towels are fun. Getting drunk during afternoon lessons is also fuuuun!!! Whopee for leechee liquor!! hehehehehehe.

Aaaaanyways, yeah, night life's pretty good but it'd be better if the goddamned trains didn't stop at 12:30 and if the capsule hotels accepted women. But noooo, I have to get to the station by 12:30 and its full of scary japanese drunk screaming stuff and the fact that I'm a scary gaijin doesn't work on them.... gah. Fingers are dizzy!!

Oooooh, the new Zelda is fantastic. It made my fangirl brain implode! I have bought so many shounen jump!! i'll have to buyrn them once I get back to Mexico. Which is in just a month!! I wish I could stay longeeerrrr.

Hehehh, i never thought I'd write a gotwoot post half-drunk. i never thought i'd get drunk duriung lessons either! thats life for you.

My bedroom is not so small, actually. There's enough space for a bed and a closet and a bookshelf!! which is enough for me. And it has a window! And the door has a lock, so I can lock myself in when my four year old "brother" tires me!! Which is often.

Whoa, head starting to clear.

Anyway, life in Japan may or may not be SO expensive, it kind of depends on where you come from and whether you know how to... live here. If you come from France or England and stay here food will end up being just slightly more expensive than in your country... if you come from Latin America or China, then it'll be expensive. If you eat at restaurants every day, you'll end up poor but if you buy vegetables and rice instead and prepare your food at home then there's no problem.

If you only eat onigiri and leechee liquor you'll save money too!!

Actually, all in all I'm a very er... boring person. I like to sleep and I value not throwing up so I don't drink much and truth to be told it takes more than a night club to keep me entretained, so I frequent coffee shops and libraries much more.

An old woman here called it "having an old soul", I call it "being way too boring for my age" but since I'm happy anyways I don't care one way or the other. I dunno what else to write, really... if anyone wants to know anything then tell me, 'cause once life becomes life then there's not much to write about it even if you are living in Japan and all.

Even though you might be a lil bored, you still got an opportunity that not many people can get these days. I'm still a lil jealous since I've always wanted to go to Japan, haha.

Actually, ramen is pretty expensive - 400 yen a bowl at least, which is about 4 dollars and of course thats not really SO expensive but when you are here and want to buy almost everything you see 400 yen are better spent in other things besides food. Like er, candy (OMG Pocky) and stupid Naruto and Gundam Seed toys and manga! Manga is worth 390 yen only, making it a better inversion than ramen.

Anyway, visited Ueno park yesterday. Seems all the forgein men decided I looked forgein-easy enough to invite me over to God knows where they were living and so I received five invitations and one of them kept following me around. Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy, and I wasn't even wearing anything skimpy!!
I have a corean friend who was asked "How much?" at Shinjuku. Poor girl, to be mistaken for a whore... good thing was she slapped the guy and then I arrived and started yelling at him and she yelled at him too so the guy kinda threw 5000 yen to the floor and went off running, leaving us angry but with lots of money to buy ice cream and become happy again.

Now I'll proceed to inform you all that almost all teens and young adults I've met stopped watching anime at 14, and Gundam Seed is, seemingly, watched mostly by 4 year old boys who don't understand what the fuck is going on but thing that Mechas are OMG so cool. I watch Gundam Seed every sunday (if I'm home, at least) because my host brother forces me to, almost... meanwhile, I introduced him to Naruto (which he hadn't seen before) and he liked it to the point of forgetting about his dinner.

Then he cried because the dinner was cold. I hate little kids.

Same here. Either I didn't get the joke (nor am I interested in getting it anyway) or that was just stupid. And instant ramen tastes horrible everywhere, even here.

when i went to this prep school some Japanese teachers came to our school to observe it or something, im not really sure (i was in 5th grade at the time,) and i asked one of them if he collected pokemon cards and he said he had every set. this guy was 40+.

*HUGS* As soon as I get a scanner I'm sending you images of chibi-Yondaime. 'Cause there's a lot of chibi Yondaime around here.

Anyway, not all of them watch anime - there are some who consider it too kiddy, some others watch it every now and then and some have one series which they follow - thats pretty normal, all in all, but they don't speak about it as we do... I have yet to see two japanese arguing whether Itachi could own Jiraiya or Jiraiya could close his eyes and fight and whatever. And it's not really because they think that doing so its OMG loser LOL!!1, its just that they don't bring it up in their conversation a lot.

Anyway, on friday I was walking around Tokyo Dome and in the horizon I saw three big white panels - one had one One Piece page printed on it, another had a mix of all of Jump's series and the last one was all Naruto. So my brain almost imploded and said "OMG you have to go!! Legs, walk, now! Wait, don't look too excited. But go. Fast."

So I went there and there it was hanging, in pretty neon blue, "JUMP SHOP". My brain imploded and I entered and started buying stuff. Spent around 70 dollars in a sitting and I have to go back soon.
I bought...
One Naruto cushion with almost all charcters in chibi,
Naruto pencil case,
Konoha's leaf symbol (a pin)
A D. Gray-Man mirror,
A Gintama tea-cup
Gintama "Yorosuya Gin-chan" pin
Gintama make-up bag

And some other stuff
Its a great great store, really. It has everything you could wish of your favorite series for a perhaps little high price but hey, its worth it. Posters, manga volumes, mirrors, pins, figurines, DVDs, lunch boxes, book markers, pencil cases, CD cases, stationary, celular straps, pins... and you don't feel out of place because there you find highschool girls squealing at a Goku pin and college boys buying Bleach posters and salary men buying Hikaru no Go's "Let's 5!" t-shirts and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo's "You are my hat!" sweat shirts. Its the kind of store in which if you don' recognize Bleach's shinigami's symbols you are kinda out of place.

Yeah.

And on sunday I went to work the rice fields!! Not kidding here. I got knee-deep into mud and sowed rice all of the morning, then I collected potatoes, carrots and daikon from the ground and finally I prepared mochi (rice-paste cakes) in the traditional way - which is hammering the rice with big wooden hammers. Had so much fun....!

Anyway, yeah, that's that. I'm getting tired and I want to go buy today's Shounen Jump, so bye!
